It's not a matter of supporting NFC. The whole design philosophy of Microsoft is to prevent any file transfer which bypass Zune. Unless this design philosophy change NFC or bluetooth is not going to help.
*
NFC is meant to solve easy sharing of pics without needing to go online. They are going to cut out Zune after Tango. The main reason why they don't allow you to access file system directly is simple, prevent piracy.

Wifi hotspot works very well, I use it a lot. Just that it's only Ad-hoc, not infrastructure. But at least it doesn't drain battery badly.

Is this official from Microsoft or some blogger's wishful hope? MS cutting out Zune will be a radical change in WP design. I don't see MS doing this unless they are really desperate.

All companies want to prevent piracy. But doing it in such a way that it greatly inconvenience ordinary users is worse and has contributed to consumer rejection of WP. Don't ask why Apple can do it and MS can't. Some can and some can't.
*
It's being put under consideration. I think if they allow external mass storage to be usable then it's pretty much means u dun need Zune liau right?

Your definition of ordinary users really have to see geolocation also. For ordinary users here maybe but just our neighbor, SG, it's completely different.

QUOTE(Andy214 @ Mar 9 2012, 09:20 AM)
File System yes;
I don't find any reasonable nor logical explanation for sending photo over bluetooth.

But then, MS should know better about preventing piracy; If so, they would've done the same to their Desktop Windows. It's just so not MS.
What they did to the phone, it makes it like a those specific controlled media player device which only allows you to do something, such as going to their proprietary software. This doesn't make it a smartphone anymore, perhaps these type of device needs a new category.
If a mobile computer with added phone functionality is called a smartphone.
Then they should give a new name for multimedia device (like iPod, Zune) with added phone functionality a new name/categor, like mediaphone or something.
*
Well bro, unfortunately the 'smartphone' category is now being defined by Apple, like it or not. Everything else is compared to it. Quite honestly I agree with u, it's a multimedia device. Unfortunately the rest of the western world dun see it that way.

Anyway, back to N9, we can do text selection in web browser now but we can't in email, correct? Or did I miss something? hmm.gif

What use is a phone if you can't hear properly the phone calls, no matter how good are the other stuff. May be I should just stick with N8.

Compared to my N8, yes the N9 is soft. The speaker output is actually capable of more loud sounds when ringing set to max, it's really loud but sound not good, start breaking. Unfortunately, when playing back vids, music or doing map navigation, it's max is soft making it hard to hear if have any environmental noise. The earpiece volume is soft but so far still can hear even in coffee shop. Maybe it's coz when I answer call I plug my other ear so I can hear better. laugh.gif

808? Hehe...

Actually got, N9 got the N9 Ninjas ma, you didn't go hunt them? I like the Shuriken, and you can also get a chance to win the Nokia N9, and upon collecting your Shuriken, you will be greeted by a hot chick in sexy outfit. Ooops... I mean, she is holding a beautiful N9 and ask you to try it.

The Lumia may receive even harder marketing because Windows Phone will be their primary OS now, so they need to get attention and people to experience and like it.
N9 they only need it when they launch to get it sell up to at least their target I suppose.
It's a business after all, but N9 is a good device; Personally, I don't simply recommend to anyone blindly, it depends on what they need and want and will they be satisfied and enjoy the device.

Right now, Windows Phone is inevitable, Nokia already go down this path. Only thing is, can Nokia change MS mind to make their OS less restrictive, more flexible and customizable? With current restrictions and limitations, my personal opinion, I believe it will greatly impact many Nokia loyal customers, although they may gain new along the way. Is it worth the risk?
Why not maintain the old as much as possible while gaining new (not to mention more)?
*
I totally agree. thumbup.gif

Anyway, I think the reason why target for new one more than try to retain old ones is simple, the new young ppl are louder & easier to influence. Remember, these are the ppl who more or less only know either Apple or Android these past 2 years & don't know Symbian/Windows Mobile. These are the ppl who clasify Symbian as old, slow & a dinosaur, no matter what polish you try to put on Symbian.

QUOTE(tonberry_ax @ Mar 12 2012, 02:24 PM)
I remember the N9 ninja got me excited a bit. U have no idea how much shuriken i've been collect.. lolz

I've seen many SGS2 / iphone user is originally from angry & disappointing Nokia user, no doubt Nokia has better build quality & camera stuff. But the OS i can tell is a piece of shit. I remember N97 era is the worst strategy that Nokia did, lousy symbian OS ever done, full of lag & everything. That time apple came out with the iphone, the OS icon attracts a lots of attraction, ppl start to jump ship, few years back android doing good too, & ppl jump ship again. And yet Nokia doesn't understand what user wants, perhaps the company is too big, a lots of decision have to approve by many layers.

Not long ago we've see MeeGo, it brings new hope to the mobile industry in terms of usability, then came out with this worthless elop come & kill it. Implement the WP7 drop the phone usability to almost zero. So are they forcing the remaining loyal Nokia customer to jump ship as well?
*
Haha yeah, N97 is really darn disappointing. But are you sure WP7 drop phone usability to almost zero? Have you tried one? Yes you are right in that Nokia became too big & decisions have to go through multiple layers which almost always means it reacts too slowly or the management can't see there's a prob at all. Just 2 years back all upper management in Nokia can't see shit one, all say everything is good. doh.gif

To be honest, i have tried WP7 for some time & trying to build some supporting apps, WP7 really only nice to look at it, but in terms of usability & connectivity that's really bad. So far if u ask me, I never seen any other OS with good usability come close to Meamo & MeeGo. sigh...
*
Wow cool that you trying to build apps for it. Anyway just curious, what are the usability & connectivity stuff that are bad in WP7?

Don't compare with Maemo/Meego, hehe. Different market to be honest.

Young ppl, that is, teens and 18-24 age bracket very hard to win over. To them, its Iphone or Samsung. Nokia is for their mums and dads, use Nokia dont look cool. Use WP7 Nokia with so much limitations, even less cool. Microsoft need to face the fact that they cannot do what Apple did, that phase is over. Iphone have loyal fans who will stick to iphone no matter what, other brands who want to use simplicity as a selling need to be different.
*
If this is the case then doesn't matter what Nokia do also loh. Once the batch of moms & dads gone, no one will use Nokia even if they sticked to Symbian/MeeGo.

Actually your point of being simple but different to compete with Apple, isn't that exactly what WP7 is? hmm.gif

QUOTE(tonberry_ax @ Mar 12 2012, 03:56 PM)
In short, with Windows Phone requirements, restrictions and limitations, it will give current smartphone users (iPhone exlcuded) many problem, mainly file transfer, reliance on Zune and the customization/flexibility.

Many loyal Nokia users who not use the computer, not to mention internet or even email, how to make them transferring files (photos/videos/music and PodCast ONLY) to PC which requires Zune? Zune requires Windows XP SP3 or newer.

Also, windows Phone requires a WIndows Live ID.

First, these loyal users need to get through this; Then, they need to get through the fact that it cannot send files through Bluetooth. Try and tell people these and see what's their reaction. It's pretty obvious. What's more, there's no BACKUP feature so far.

So, do i need to compare these "features" with any other OS now?
*
Ok, put it this way. Why can loyal Nokia user switch to iPhone & have no probs bout all these same restrictions? I see even uncles & aunties much older than me use iPhones. And I'm 30+ liau.

You can actually skip Windows Live ID registration at the start, as Andy has said. I didn't get a chance to try that.

Anyway, why don't you use WP7 as it's intended, without thinking so much about how the old ways worked? Honestly if WP7 doesn't suit u, there's still other Nokia phones available, right? Especially those you keep saying ppl do not use internet or email. Why do you want them to use an obvious internet heavy phone then?

QUOTE(eaglehelang @ Mar 12 2012, 03:59 PM)
WP7 is trying to follow Apple, not differentiate the market. They need to come with sthing Iphone dont have.
Symbian/Meego still can, due to Sd card slot, usb n the go/mass storage, bluetooth, with reasonable pricing. Nokia still hv following in Asia, these aspects must have. This way, wouldn't drive away the loyal users, who in turn may decide to buy Nokia phones for their kids. Nokia may be uncool but its the parents who have the buying power.
The best marketing is satisfied user - if parents like Nokia, they will buy or pass on their Nokia phones to the kids. Kids, being still in school, what parents buy, just use lor. Then, if they like it, start of new loyal customer.....
Thats the purpose of those lower priced phones.

Now they try attract youngsters, if in Asia, can say fail. Then worse, piss off the loyal customers, lose lose situation. Microsoft not effected so much, they can cut losses and move on just like that
*
Well, times have changed liau from what I see. Instead of parents pass phone to kids, I see the other way around now. Kids tell parents what phones they want, then when they change they pass their old phone to their parents.

You have to remember one thing, what Nokia is trying to get back now is the USA market, which unfortunately holds the biggest 'mindshare' of phone ecosystem now. Like it or not, they have to make it work there, or they will fail. It doesn't really matter if they have strong following in Asia coz of their cheap phones. Once Android phones go cheap enuff, there's nowhere for Nokia to go. Nokia was king in Europe & Asia for a long time. Now they only have Asia left to defend & they r getting cornered by Android makers like ZTE who makes dirt cheap Android phones.

Anyway, where's that whatsapp port? Any news?

Depends on ppl yes iPhone have hell a lot limitation but they slowly improving it step by step but if u ask me to get newer iOS it's just plain boring from iPod touch 1st gen till now everything looks the same. I just a iPhone 4s but at thend I still prefer a wp7. I upload to Flickr or skydrive within seconds.
*
Haha yeah, iOS UI wise has been same so long. I also bored of it since my iPod touch 2nd gen. Yap, that's where the good points of WP7 lies, u can do things like upload pics to net way faster, much less steps. Most of the time just 2 steps. Basically do the same thing but faster. Another eg, take a pic, select editor, do something, share. All without needing to go out to home screen, look for pic editor, load pic in pic editor, then edit.

I love my N9 but at the same time a bit annoyed at it's bugs. Something that isn't fixed till now, my favourite contacts keep making themselves un-favourite. Anyone have solution to this?

Easy to answer your question, ppl jumping ship is because ppl rather have restriction on their phone than Symbian lag, apps crash all the way, they cannot tahan with the restarting / waiting stuff. That's y iphone smoothness attracts them, they trade off with their usability & freedom with the OS smoothness.

Of coz further more, as the time goes by android & iphone already develop a strong market, with so much application & games supported, who will remember iphone sux in camera, sux in durability and sux with Bluetooth transfer? Nokia, still meeting with all the layers wondering what to do next, but they don't realize whats is their strongest part. In fact, they canot market their strong part to the world but hire some Microsoft idiot to make their situation worst.

By the time they come out with MeeGo, iOS & Android market already in mature state, most of the ppl who jump ship never bother to come back to Nokia. And elop kills MeeGo too, so any reason to come back Nokia? ofc no...

Situation 1: You have a iPhone? wow cool~~~
Situation 2: You have Nokia? wow, what century are you living? lol

To be honest, these brainwashed marketing strategy makes Nokia have no place to stand in the market.
*
laugh.gif That situation 2 made me laugh. It's sadly the truth. Anyway, let time tell lah if WP will make or break Nokia. We can always move on to other OS biggrin.gif

Yeah, the issue with Symbian has always been insufficient memory, be it RAM or working C drive. Only now they learn but it's so darn late.

Actually I agree the 3 button setup on WP7 is confusing. But there are good points to them, especially the search button. Just too bad it was never properly explained how to use it. Then again, it needs net connection also so most won't bother.

Well, management have made their decisions. Nothing much we can do about it. The ship has sailed. There's no turning back. I just wish they give us N9 users a bit more attention that they promised instead now put everything N9 also no priority, from their main team to the BetaLabs team. It's just so sad to hear them reply that an update for an app MAY come later this year. The MeeGo team seems to have been stripped bare liau.

Those loyal Nokia users switched to Iphone cos of smoothness, apps and its popular. Old uncles and aunties  dont use internet much, some dunno how set up emails in phone. IPhone is to make calls, sms, apps. Not say uncles and aunties, some younger ones also dunno(25 to 40 yr old)

True also that kids pass old phones to parents to use, thats y the parents abuy one that they themself know how to use, lol. Btw,all these based on actual study done. Of course I understand that KL youngsters more canggih than Melaka lah, keke

There are still loyal Nokia users who still stick to them, if they focus on WP only with its current restrictions,is like purposely driving away the  loyal customers. Super duper hard to get back customer in US, Iphone too deeoly entrenched there liao. Same time piss off old customers, lol, really funny. Later new customer tak dpt, old one run away.
*
Haha, so even if u dun know how to setup email or go online, I think as long as the phone works as a phone it's still OK lah. It applies to iPhone or WP7, just see which one catch ppl's eye. At least here Nokia dares to do something different in terms of design, not like the endless copy of same looking slab of phone. doh.gif

Anyway, I'm not from KL ah. laugh.gif

Yeah what to do, just wait & see lah. If Lumia tak ngam, guess they only have their Asha lines left. Hope Meltimi(Low end MeeGo) turns out to be true. Who knows, Nokia might still surprise. Just as long as they dun go kill the goose before it can lay some gold eggs lah. icon_rolleyes.gif

The main question, how many people actually use it or utilize it? It cannot be customize, so it's useless to many and it's annoying when you can easily accidentally pressed it on the Lumia 800 which is not a hardware button, you'll occasionaly meet Mr. Bing on and off, "Oh Hello Bing? You again?"
But not everyone uses the low end devices, many of them still using high end Symbians despite they don't utilizes it, mainly for the higher spec, display, design, camera, etc.
Example: My uncle uses the N8, but he doesn't surf net, he doesn't have data plan, he doesn't connect the phone to the PC. But he does take photo and transfer files to his friends or relatives. He's been an all time Nokia user.
If Windows Phone failed him and no more options, where to go? Now think about many other of these users.
Some may be able to adapt, but how many?
BUT, luckily and thankfully the 808 PureView will still be running the Symbian...
*
Is the Search key on Android customisable? Anyone wanna confirm? Yeah can hit wrong easilly but I have to ask, why would you change a search key to do something else? Isn't that even more confusing? Also I'm wondering a bit, do you know what you can do with the search key? This is a good article - Nokia Conversations

Even though for most of us here we see 808 PureView on Symbian as a good thing, anyone who is not a Nokia fan thinks overwise. I had to spend a lot of time explaining to them why 808 is on Symbian. shakehead.gif

QUOTE(KennyKB @ Mar 12 2012, 05:47 PM)
In fact a BBC report says researchers have determined that Apple products excite the same areas of the brain in their fans as religious imagery does in the faithful. Go figure.

After 1.5 years of existence WP7 achieved a 1.9% global market share. Bada was launched only a few months before WP7 and despite being a badly managed os produced by only one manufacturer it has beaten WP7 with 2.2%. So why did Nokia take on this loser and tie the fate of the whole company to it?
*
laugh.gif Hence why I call Apple fans zombies.

Anyway, have you guys even thought about Windows 8? How that ties PC, tablets & phones together? Maybe that's the reason Nokia took the risk? I'm just making a wild guess BTW.

I should say - drive away those who dont use Iphone anyway. Loyal Nokia users who didnt jump ship to Iphone due to the restrictions would not jump to WP7. We hv stick with Nokia thru all the hu ha of iphone, one of the reason is less restrictions. Those who already jump to iphone most likely will stick to iphone, more apps. Those who already jump to Android most likely would not like the restrictons. From nokia to android then back to nokia symbian belle, they still can accept, symbian faster now.

As long time Nokia user, I cannot accept if they solely use WP7. Some more market it without considering customer needs of Asia region, like saying we all not important. Only western market,Us market important, Asia market only for cheapo S40 phones. This one is like driving away customer lor
like the n9 not sold in some countries, ppl there say like purposely want shove Lumia down their throats. So, as you know, they go buy online the n9,and very pissed with Elop
*
Don't worry, Symbian phones still around for another year or 2. Oh ya, the Asha lines r not some cheap useless phones especially the new ones. They have touch screen, have Twitter, FB, Whatsapp & *GASP, they have SWIPE? Go check out Asha 202 vids. (Well, not the super ultra cool SWIPE we have on N9 lah of course)

What search key on Android?
Android have "Back", "Home" and the third one is not search key, it's a Menu key, which I find it much more useful and wanted it on the Windows Phone.
On the Windows Phone, you have to press the "..." at the bottom right, if there is not "..." means no options and you're stuck, means there's nothing you can do there. I feel this many times, even my friend who review it, looking for the menu, then I said here no menu.
*
Dude, are you sure there's no search key on Android? It's a requirement for Android 1.6 till 2.3x, only recently dropped for Android 4.x. I guess it's so useless on Android that you didn't even realise it was there. laugh.gif

It was Back, Home, Menu & Search. Though the order can be mixed around which was dumb since every manufacturer seems to go with their own ordering, making it confusing if you switch.

UPDATE: I see why you didn't notice the search key, since Samsung & Sony dropped it from their phones. HTC the only ones that still giving all 4 buttons, until their latest One series of course. Most of the ppl I know were using HTC hence why I noticed the search key.

Well, if you trying to simplify things I don't see why u need options everywhere. That's the old Symbian mentality. We already went through this before so no point discussing again.

QUOTE(Andy214 @ Mar 12 2012, 08:43 PM)
Simple; People want the latest or new. Symbian is old. These people I would classify as "wants" not "need" or doesn't understand or know better, or simply, wants a reason to bash the 808 PureView.
They didn't exactly state reasons for using Windows Phone OS or why is it better, their comments is mostly plain and blant.
*
Well, would you agree that most ppl never KNOW what exactly they 'want' or 'need' in a phone? Only till after they use it then see what their frens can do then they realise, OH! I want my phone to be able to do that too!!! doh.gif

QUOTE(Andy214 @ Mar 12 2012, 08:43 PM)
No idea how it will look and how it will work; but I still doubt it because there's no reason to drop MeeGo or other OS, it seems more like there's something else going on.
Yunno, when Elop joins and there're already rumors, and when he kills off one by one and announce WP, the rumors become more accurate. Infiltrate and attack from the inside.. and then....
Who knows, just rumors.
*
Yeah I know about this angle. It's a very believable angle. But then think about this. Americans wouldn't even touch a Nokia before this year. This year, because of Nokia efforts in WP, Americans finally giving praise to Nokia, something they could never find themselves doing before this. They would rather die before giving high praise to Nokia. Yes I know our N9 is the 1st device to actually make them notice Nokia again & yes they could have gone on with MeeGo. I definitely wished it was so too, else why the heck I use N9?

Anyway, the story of MeeGo & it's mismanagement is for another day, if you guys didn't already know about it.

QUOTE(Andy214 @ Mar 13 2012, 09:25 AM)
If they drop it, I think it's proven it's pretty useless, LoL.
My friend using HTC, I checked with him, he also never use it.
It maybe personal preference, but I think majority may find it useless, thus it's better to allow user to customize.

Not sure if it's Symbian, but even my friend's who's been using the Milestone since it first launch, when he use the Windows Phone, in some screen, he was asking how to get the menu/option. There's no such button, have to look for "..." at the bottom right of the screen.

Anyway, among all the phones I used, I never really have any problem; except this Windows Phone, because I really find the search key, not really useful and since it's not a physical hardware button, it's easily accidentally press. The Lumia 710 is physical button, so you may not experience it so often; on the Lumix 800, if your hand just slip or accidentally "molested" it, then "Hello Bing!"

For Windows Phone, probably the Menu button is useless in the Live Tiles screen (but actually it can be useful when they allow user to customize the Live Tiles more, user can hit the menu button and  access the menu options).
In many other screen, the menu/option is very useful, I've been using it on the Android, whether viewing photo, in FB app, or whatever. There's no "..." button hidden on the bottom right like Android. So I don't think it's a Symbian thing.
If you're viewing a photo in FB app, and you want to access option, in Windows Phone, you have to see whether there is this "..." sign on the bottom right. With most other phones, you use the menu/option button; There is usually nothing on the screen.

As I said, it's a personal preference, whether on screen on or hardware key, it's just a matter of getting used to, just like iPhone only have 1 button to rule them all, and N9 have button-less.
I have no problem with N9 anyway, but why Windows Phone? Because I find the Search button hardly use by many; If given choice, I rather customize it to another usage; I want search, I can add a shortcut in the Live Tiles, which I think many might prefer, but I doub't they wouldn't even bother to put in the Live Tiles.

Hahahaha! I can see you really hate Mr Bing. laugh.gif

I did my testing on a Lumia 710 so yeah, you're right I didn't accidently press that key. Funny how u term it as "molested", I guess you really pressed it too often. biggrin.gif

Yeah it's personal preference so we'll leave it at that.

Anyway, some good N9 news, DLNA on N9 is certified as a M-DMS device. From the dev himself

it actually has the DLNA support, but i dun have any subject to test on it. In fact it has the video support too.. I not sure about N9, but N950 has the video support already

Yap the DLNA support came with PR1.2. Works fine, tested it on my PS3 & Win7. Only issue is there's no way to select what folders to scan & it's strict sharing mode. Strict sharing means it will only show stuff u took with the camera. So stuff you downloaded won't show up. Can of course drop to console do some messing around as dev suggested. But I would rather the app give options like how Symbian Nokia Play To did on my N8.

Anyway, anyone else having issues playing vids after PR1.2? A video playing halfway can stop with error "This device can't play this kind of stream". Pressing play button a few times will play the vid again but it's getting very irritating.

Haha, I guess it's because the button is not physical, it's on the display itself, so you can easily accidentally "molested" it while using and Mr. Bing will come and find you "You call me again?"
Even my friend testing the phone, he also accidentally called Mr. Bing, lol.

It can take some time to get used to and when it happen less, it'll be less irritating; possibly starting to miss Mr. Bing also that time, hahaha

erm...let said i put a mp3 song for my sms tone, when there is a message, the ringtone will only play for a brief moment only after that it will auto fade to no sound at all even i did nothing on it......i wonder....and for the screen lock...erm...every time i left it for a moment...it will autolock the screen....need to double tap the screen or press the power button..found it quite annoying few times..haha

For sms tone, no idea since I've never changed that from the provided tones. Maybe it's set to fade that way.

For autolock, it's under Settings, Device, Display. There u can set it to max of 3 minutes before it time out the display.

Enjoy your phone! thumbup.gif

No prob!

Anyway if you wanna do some serious tweaking on your phone I recommend this tool --> N9 Quick Tweak

This is a very powerful tool & at the same time very dangerous. Make sure you read everything before you do any tweaking & create that backup first before trying anything. icon_rolleyes.gif

Oh ya, if there's any new firmware for our N9, you have reset all your changes then update. Just remember that.
