QUOTE(radkliler @ Feb 20 2012, 02:46 PM) Neither did Gabe promise that they won't screw you over when he suddenly has a change of heart. At the very least, we can see Gabe's standing very well with PC Gamers now, unlike EA.Personally, I'd be more safe using Origin since I know they'll screw me at some point. Because as it is now, I have a shitload of games on Steam and if Gabe decides to do a Kotick, I've just lost nearly 600 USD in games. |

Origin Store lack of big sales like steam, however, amazon has a lot of EA games on sales there that could be activated on origin - no complain.
however, the origin client lacks a clean backup/restore function like steam, that i no rike. and yea, when starting origin, the pc will freeze for a sec there, but no login issue. |

I also do this with steam but for steam i need to install the client, exit, copy back backup and run steam again. If i reinstall steam to the same folder with the backup already there it will delete it for some reason, something that origin won't do thankfully.however, the origin client lacks a clean backup/restore function like steam, that i no rike. and yea, when starting origin, the pc will freeze for a sec there, but no login issue. Also Origin has sales but mostly region specific. I got NFS Shift II for 5 euro 2 weeks ago |

Origin don't have proper backup system. That copy paste folder isn't proper, unlike Steam.
I still find no problem with using Steam backup to restore my games back. In one way, it's a clean install than copy paste the entire files and folders to a fresh hard disk. |

Actually what STEAM is doing is the same as you copying the whole folder and pasting it back, so "proper" is not really an apt way to describe it. And usually I don't even have to do copy and paste with Origin as I always install the game in a seperate disk, and just redirect Origin there whenever I reinstall Windows. Can't do that with Steam since it will delete all the files inside there.I still find no problem with using Steam backup to restore my games back. So your definition of "backup" is "copy paste"?The reason why there's a backup is to do another copy, and what Steam have done is implementing the backup system in their platform, encrypting the files and reducing the file size. For example, reducing the file size of 4GB to 2GB backup files. Tell me if that was exactly the same as copy paste. Anyway, it's up to personal preferences. Some people just prefer to copy paste, but for me. If it's a clean window reinstall. I would prefer the game I install can be as clean as possible as well. |

QUOTE(temptation1314 @ Feb 21 2012, 02:13 AM) So your definition of "backup" is "copy paste"? The only way to get a full clean installation is to redownload the whole game and reinstall again without using the backup you make. Whatever it is, the backup is still the files that are originally in your computer, although the only stuffs that get "dirty" are your config files, which usually are situated elsewhere like in My Documents or Users folder. Unless you manage to muck up the installations with addons or mods, but IIRC whenever STEAM backups your file it will retain whatever you have changed (my so called STEAM "backup" of my F1 2010 folder still has a file that I modded) thus it's kinda mootThe reason why there's a backup is to do another copy, and what Steam have done is implementing the backup system in their platform, encrypting the files and reducing the file size. And yes, in computer term, backup and restore is copying your original file to another location and repasting it back when you need it, wether or not you are encrypting/compressing/splitting. Altho what I am doing is just telling Steam and Origin that "hey, I already have those files in my PC, just use them". Considering that STEAM is nearing 200GB and Origin is nearly 40GB I hardly want to install them in the same HDD as my Windows (a puny 60GB). But the fact still remains that you can still backup Origin, which is the point of my earlier post. This post has been edited by DrBlueBox: Feb 21 2012, 02:34 AM |

QUOTE(temptation1314 @ Feb 20 2012, 06:03 PM) it is not exactly freeze.. how shud i describe it....try: after i click on the origin.exe, within that short time if i try to do sth else, like resizing a windows, etc, it is not responsive. but for a split second only. all other program don't have this problem. but for 1 sec, i can wait. Also Origin has sales but mostly region specific. I got NFS Shift II for 5 euro 2 weeks ago and yup, i know i can just copy pasta, doing that now actually. and i have no problem the way origin handle new game (put them all inside a single folder), but for older game, they appear in other folder. and what if i forgot where the game folder shud go in the future when i wan to restore the game and play? for steam, each time i download a game, i know where it goes to, each time i use the backup function, i know where the backup files go to, etc. with origin, i cant be sure. i am not debating or bashing origin, in fact i believe 1 was one of the first ppl to use it and try to promote it in steam thread >< PS: there's an old game that i downloaded but din found the 'installer folder' in either location.. nid to think back what game is that... Finding a full team on Mass Effect 3 multiplayer is a major pain.
If one guy drops out when you set up a game, you have to exit and start over |
