This thread is for those who are looking for recommendation in a particular category of software (antivirus, download manager, IM, whatever) and other forumers are allowed to give recommendation based on the question.

For example, if you think the download manager you are using now sucks and you're looking for a better alternative, and you're unsure about the choices in the Common Software Links thread, here is the place for you to ask.

The reason for this thread is obvious - to reduce the amount of threads like:
- Please recommend me a good web browser
- Which bittorrent client is the best?
- Recommendation required for a good registry cleaner
- What compression software I should use?

etc...

And for those who want to give recommendation, please give reasons for your recommendation instead of merely stating the software name itself.

So I seek co-operation from all of you to participate in this thread instead of opening threads like that to mess up the forum.

Happy asking and recommending! smile.gif

personally im using registry mechanic (a specific registry cleaner) n the system mechanic pro 6 registry cleaner. the reason being, its fast , efficient n i never had to undo previous cleanup (meaning no hangs/BSOD) after cleaning.

Used tune-up utilities before and it's a good system management software overall, not just registry cleaner

CCleaner is not bad, and I'm using it now because it's free

I recommend Foxit reader for opening PDF files.
Really fast in term of installation time and loading time. Doesn't use much memory either.

I'm not sure what particular kind of optimizing are you looking for, but TuneUp utilities is good enough for general purpose. It includes registry cleaner, sys optimizations, registry defragmenter, system cleanup etc....

As mentioned, CCleaner is not bad for freeware
Don't bother asking for crack or even talking about it here

I'm not sure if graphic card is the factor, but definitely PC spec matters.

My FoxIt reader problem is not serious as yours...at most can't display certain lines only

Reposting here as per moderator's suggestion.

Please recommend a software bootable on floppy similar to fdisk to check if my Hd still working or not. If working, Id also like to know if the hd got bad sector or not and possibly repair it?

Guai Guai Zai, recommended HDD Regenerator v1.51(Thx Guai Guai Zai smile.gif) on my original thread.

Any others to add fellas? Thx in advance.

Gimli, you may use back the HDD manufacturer own utilities. Download the tools from its respective webstie. Bootable from floppy or CD.

1) Not quite sure what u mean, but when you use the "On resume, password protect" option, I think the background processes are still running just that you can't get back to the screen if you don't know the password.

2) Have you tried using netlimiter to cap browsing speed in IE ?

To add on to what samurai1337 has said, just use Windows logo key + L to lock your Windows session. Just set a password for your user account.

Don't think you need any third party software for it
Windows Task Manager should be able to do the job

I guess that would be MS Outlook. Alternatively, you could try Mozilla Calendar/Sunbird + Mozilla Thunderbird or the Mozilla Suite.

Since GoogleTalk is using Jabber protocol, you can use GAIM, which also supports MSN messenger

Refer to this
http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/ans...py?answer=24073

But you can't use audio in GAIM, that's the thing smile.gif

Hmmm... I am a previous user of ACDSee 7. Now I want to change to adobe products. What I'm looking for is a software that can view numerous type of pics and do some editting/touchup. I checked adobe product line and I saw so many types of software. I don't know which to buy and I don't want to waste money for something I didn't wish for.

Products in mind:
1) Photoshop Elements 4.0 for Windows
2) Photoshop Album 2.0
3) Photoshop CS2

Which should I get?

From ACDSee to Photoshop CS or Elements is quite overkill I think.
If simple retouching/editing means rotating/sharpen/blurring/red eye removal/resize etc then you can always use FastStone Image Viewer.

From ACDSee to Photoshop CS or Elements is quite overkill I think.
If simple retouching/editing means rotating/sharpen/blurring/red eye removal/resize etc then you can always use FastStone Image Viewer.

Haha... I want to upgrade myself in the aspect of photography mah... Lol... What's the difference between Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Photoshop Album 2.0? I don't see great difference in them. Which is better? Or should I just dig some money for CS2?

I guess if you really are good at it, just get Photoshop Element then.

Photoshop Album is for people who wants to reorganize, retouch or edit their pictures.

Photoshop Elements is basically Photoshop CS without PANTONE. Element doesn't help you organize though.

I think I won't need Pantone. What can I do with it at home? hehe... What kind of organization does the Photoshop Album can do? Is it like grouping photos according to date etc?

It can organize just like ACDSee can do I think. Only playing with it for a while.

Photoshop Element is good enough for 99% of us. In fact, in our office, we had a graphic designer who preferred Photoshop Elements. We had purchased Photoshop CS because of the extra things like healing tool, curve, paths, etc. But she says she prefers Elements.

Adobe Premiere may have what you want.
Although PowerEncoder is still a good program IMHO.

All these while I've been using ACDSee 3.1 as image viewer, and it served me quite well. However I would like to try IrfanView since it's a freeware and was told to be quite 'lite'. Besides, I'm using an old version of ACDSee because the newer ones are bloated with unnecessary things. I use ACDSee just for image viewing and some quick image conversions.

- how much resource does IrfanView take? the acdsee 3.1 takes only around 600-700KB.
- how big is the total application size? the acdsee 3.1 takes only around 2.6MB.

or is there any other image viewer to recommend?

Other than that, before this I came across and image editor which is almost similar to Adobe Photoshop. The layout wasn't that identical, but the functions and tools are just about the same. It's a freeware.... but I forgot the name. Does any of you know this program? Somehow I was thinking of giving it a try.

Memory consumption of Irfan View is from 5MB to 14MB...
THe installation file is 884KB (IrfanView 3.98)

For the image editor, did you mean GIMP? Or it is Paint.NET?

It really depends

To me, I choose Firefox because it is really customizable and flexible (tons of extensions, themes, tweaks, guide etc)

But for machines with low resource Opera might be better because it consumes less resource and it would run smoother on those machines.

Either way, Firefox and Opera offer much better functionalities than the current IE version (IE 6).

Try CCleaner, not only it's a freeware, it also provides other cleaning such as temporary file removing, application removing etc.

go for Pinnacle Studio 9.. If u r doin a Home Videos.
(Limitation is Only allow two Video layers)

It is just a piece of cake to master in a day or less.

Install n see how comes it is so famous.
If u one to haf more Video layers try ULEAD.

Btw, Sony Vegas is a good Video Effects u might need to check it out too.
It is flexible to control tos Special effects.
Another good option if u r afraid of Adobe After Effects.

Use Zone Alarm of course but please don't use two firewall softwares ok? It will hang ur pc up by lot of conflicts. I have used numbers of firewall before and zone alarm's the best for me. At lease it satisfies what i want it to be. Just my 2 cents. wink.gif

Audacity came to my mind...http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ But actually, removing the vocal in mp3 will cause loss of quality. If you want to retain it's quality, I suggest that you do not remove the vocals in mp3.

If you've Microsoft Outlook, it's very nice
Alternatively you can try Mozilla Sunbird too (though I haven't tried it before)

If you want something simple but beautiful, Rainlendar can do you the job.

Hope it will help.

Adobe Audition (was known as Cool Edit)
Sony SoundForge
Audacity
WavePad

I personally like Audacity because it's free and it satisfies my basic needs in audio editing. If cost is not a problem to you you might want to try Audition and SoundForge too.

For integrating service packs, updates, some settings, tweaks, customizing windows component - nlite meets your requirement. After customizing you can create a bootable ISO to be burned to your CD/DVD

But I don't think it can integrate those third party software like Mozilla Firefox

Either you look for standalone calendar software like Mozilla Sunbird or desktop calendar software like Rainlendar

Rainlendar is integrated to your desktop and it does have reminder functions intergrated into it.
http://ipi.fi/~rainy/index.php?pn=projects...ject=rainlendar

If you're looking for more features, go ahead with Mozilla Sunbird or Microsoft Outlook.

If you have broadband internet connection you can use online dictionaries and translators

For dictionary I always use http://www.m-w.com (Merriam Webster)
For translator, I use Babelfish - http://babelfish.altavista.com

If you don't mind to pay you can buy professional dictionary/translation software from Kingsoft

WordWeb is a good offline dictionary. You can download WordWeb from www.download.com for free.

As for the free reminder software, I think Miniminder is quite good. The download size is less than 5 Mb. You also can get it off www.download.com

Sure. Just stick up a huge radar dish on top of your house. You can probably watch all the free channels in the world.

Just don't cry if police tangkap u and send you to jail. I guess the risk is worth taking.... LOL.

Does anyone knows any good registry repair software? I don't know.. but recently i've received some sort of a warning about the critical errors in my registry.. so i've downloaded a Repair registry pro, and it found around 170 registry problems. But i can't fix it since the software needed to be activated if you buy it. So i download another registry fixer and it fixed most of the prob. So i checked back with the RRP, still got 155 left.

So help? Any got a suggestion of a good free software that'll fix it all?

Split what file? You want to split a video file into two or what? If yes, please refer to the pinned thread

If you want to split a normal file, you may use any of the compression utility like WinZip, WinRAR or 7zip

Those compression utilities split file slower because not only it splits the file it also does compress

You can try "File Splitter" for faster splitting experience
http://www.dekabyte.com/filesplitter/index.html

There are also tons of file splitting utilities can be found online, google for it

You could try out Agent Ransack (freeware)... has lots of features... And it supports regular expressions as well, so it has lots of potential.. Wish I could shift-delete the files it finds though...

I'm trying to look for a freeware to cut mp3s for ringtone.
I used to use Nero Wave Editor, which is quite user friendly to me.
So, From the above link, which one is more suitable for me for this purpose.

PerfectDisk
Diskeeper
O&O Defrag

If you want to PREVENT your pc from getting infected you should really try to get a non-IE browser like Firefox.

I assume you are asking about the tray icon.

If you use XP, Right Click Taskbar=>Preperties=>Customize...

a new window with title "Customize Notification" will pop up. Under behaviour, you can choose Hide when inactive, Always Hide, or Always Show for each of the tray icon. The drawback is, there is not global setting, you have to change the behaviour for all the icon independently.

Please recommend a software to: Make all the digital photos as slideshow, and add with songs as background. Make those and burn into DVD.

Sofware that is easy to use, reliable, fast, with a lot of functions.

Thanks.

Can ACDSEE do that ? Thanks.

Aurora Media Workshop can stitch all your pictures into a video slideshow with background music so after that u can burn the video onto a DVD & watch it..

Fax Services in Windows XP can do so. Need a fax modem though.
If it not installed already, go to Add or Remove Programs, then click Add/Remove Windows Components. Then tick Fax Services and click Next. Insert Windows XP CD when required.

Since I can't find any relating threads here, might as well post this question.

I'm looking for a good uninstaller program that tracks the registry, file locations, etc, to keep my HDD clean from clutter. Any suggestions for a good program that will meet my needs? Freeware if possible.

Streamyx can't be used to fax things, unless you want to use internet fax services.

You will need a fax modem, and you will pay fax service charges.

Why dun u use the WinXP build-in Chinese input? You just need to install in from Regional and Language setting. It's more compatible than CStar or NJStar IMHO. smile.gif

If u are new to burning DVD u'll be better off using it's bundled burning software, such as Nero Express or Burning ROM. Very easy and less error icon_idea.gif

You have to see wat version is it. It's better if u get lastest versions. Older version might not support DVD buring tat well. At least get version 6 or higher rolleyes.gif

I have been using K-lite mega codec pack.

It depends on how do you define "best", most format support? More functionalities? For Klite mega codec pack, I can view almost any format (but usually I only view Xvid and RMVB) and it has not given me any kind of annoying error yet.

k-lite mega codec pack is one of the best IMO,
cos at least u don't have to go hunt for each codec when u need one.,...

And what is the reason you don't want to use Print Screen? Lack of features or just because it is free?

If it's the former ones you can always try SnagIt.

aiyya aiyya....

the thing is i always have something to capture from my screen. eg. i capture my CS SOurce scores when Im the top killa, i also capture my screen when I have interface problems that can be solved by having a friend of mine look at it.

but sure, thanks a lot for the software recommendation.

edit:

i would also need a software that can send my current window to the taskbar on the right hand corner of the desktop

im pretty sure there is such software but I cant remember which one it was. ive googled.

I would greatly recommend ccleaner which has been mentioned by samurai 1337. I've been using it since a long time and I never encountered any problem with it. With regular use of ccleaner, your computer will be maintained in tip top condition.

Just tried it and I kinda like it.. I just need to know if it can capture multiple url and put them in the list (doesn't matter automatically or manually). For an example, I want to download from these links :

CODE
http://bla.com/fail.zip
http://yada.com/file.zip

As you can see, those links are not in LINK form, they are just text.. so, can Free Download Manager capture those links when I highlighted and press CTRL + C on them ?

BTW, I think it can be done using this function, but I can't open it manually. I open this window using Flashgot All in Firefox..

user posted image

Flashget got this function, just CTRL + C on lists of links and it can be detected automatically.

Alternative to Nokia PC Suite would be "Oxigen Phone Manager" but you need to pay for it.

Why don't you install the old version instead?

the previous flashget was a shareware and in the free version it used to have spyware (cydoor IIRC)

Pretty much I guess

For antivirus software what is there to use actually?
Update is done automatically, auto-protect is on and you can do a full scan whenever you want. Simple enough for me.

Maybe you should give NeoShooter a try. just a click then done..

QUOTE
Neoshooter is a screenshot application, designed for speed and simplicity.

You are able to capture the entire screen, the active window, or a selected area of the screen.

Files are captured directly to a folder of your choosing, in png, jpg or bmp format. Images can automatically be resized, and thumbnails can automatically be generated.

After taking a screenshot you can enter the build in image previewer to crop/rotate before saving.

For firefox users, instead of using download manager like Flashget/FDM/IDM together with Flashgot extension, I would say give DownloadThemAll! a try, it's an integrated download manager in FF and running pretty well as far as speed is concerned.

Crashed once but otherwise running pretty well.

THis is my situation. Everyday i have to rename plenty files into sequence. For Example:

You can try 1-4a Rename which fariz recommended to me quite some time back: http://www.1-4a.com/rename/

Most decent image viewers/editors such as ACDsee and others should be able to do it as well.

Nero is not only a CD burning software. It has a lot of other features in it. Free softwares don't come with so much features. If the XP in your old laptop is an OEM license, you cannot transfer. Likewise, if it is "retail" just get another installation CD and type in the old product key when installing.
Wonder if this suits you: http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

joshuatly, try Acdsee (ACDSee - OldVersion.com), dunno if it'll do unicode.

i dunno about other versions, but i used ver 3.0, just press Ctrl-G to generate file listing.

Xnview also can do, but not so good.

good luck!

Added on December 18, 2007, 8:35 pmskywys19, maybe it's better to get the diagnostic tools from the respective manufacturer of the hard disk that u're using.
i.e. if u have a WD hdd, use the WD diagnostics from their website.

You can try Irfanview.
http://www.irfanview.com/
The batch resize function is under "Batch Conversion" section.....I'm still using it now.
There is some filter you can choose to resize so to get the best result, you can try the
best filter before batch resize them.....

Can anyone here recommend me a avi converter that change the avi file so that I can play on MP4 player. Also plz note I'm not asking to convert avi file to another format, what I mean is to able play avi file on MP4 after convert.

FYI, I actually have the software when I buy MP4. But then I move the software from my mp4 to my computer and for some reason, I reformat my computer and I forgot to "move out" the software. So anyone can recommend me that "kind" of avi converter?

Hi, I am new here and i want to make my first post here.

What is a good Anti-Virus that also does not take up much CPU Usage and Commit?
I'm currently using Avira Premium (bought) and it makes my pc longer to boot and also makes me need to wait for quite a while before i can use it. But its really good.

So any recommendations?

I'm using Spybot seach and destroy. Its Teatimer (registry blocker) is a good addition too. I cant tell if this program is better than Ad-aware, at most the detection quality is on par with it.

Try Malwarebytes. It rid my pc of a spyware that many other anti-spyware couldnt. Also good reviews from others. It's freeware. It is a cleaner, the freeware version doesn't prevent, but cleans spyware.

Actually, if your considering heavily on a price to performance ratio. Your best bet is Kapersky. My reason is because if you can get KAV '09 for RM10 (Without disc for 1-year license) it's much more worth it compared to NAV '09 cause of the financial savings. Just my 2 cents.

Hi guys, I'm looking for a partition manager to resize 1 of my office's laptops. Thing is, there is a lot of sensitive data in there. I need a reliable partition manager.

Preferably something easy to use as well. I don't wanna mess up and screw up the laptop. That would get me fired tongue.gif
