This thread is for those who are looking for recommendation in a particular category of software (antivirus, download manager, IM, whatever) and other forumers are allowed to give recommendation based on the question.

For example, if you think the download manager you are using now sucks and you're looking for a better alternative, and you're unsure about the choices in the Common Software Links thread, here is the place for you to ask.

The reason for this thread is obvious - to reduce the amount of threads like:
- Please recommend me a good web browser
- Which bittorrent client is the best?
- Recommendation required for a good registry cleaner
- What compression software I should use?

etc...

And for those who want to give recommendation, please give reasons for your recommendation instead of merely stating the software name itself.

So I seek co-operation from all of you to participate in this thread instead of opening threads like that to mess up the forum.

Happy asking and recommending! smile.gif

Please recommend me a good registry cleaner

Used tune-up utilities before and it's a good system management software overall, not just registry cleaner

CCleaner is not bad, and I'm using it now because it's free

I recommend Foxit reader for opening PDF files.
Really fast in term of installation time and loading time. Doesn't use much memory either.

What's the best software to optimize the winXP and other system tools stuff?
*
I'm not sure what particular kind of optimizing are you looking for, but TuneUp utilities is good enough for general purpose. It includes registry cleaner, sys optimizations, registry defragmenter, system cleanup etc....

I'm not sure if graphic card is the factor, but definitely PC spec matters.

My FoxIt reader problem is not serious as yours...at most can't display certain lines only

Err.. guys... I don't know its suitable here.. but can anyone recommend some screensaver which can lock using password? ie, I lock up my screen but my comp still running..
and 2) anyway to lock internet explorer? without disconnecting my LAN connection? (ie I want my bitcomet run but don't want my stupid sister to use my comp and surf net and eat up my bandwidth?) Thanks alot
*
1) Not quite sure what u mean, but when you use the "On resume, password protect" option, I think the background processes are still running just that you can't get back to the screen if you don't know the password.

2) Have you tried using netlimiter to cap browsing speed in IE ?

Don't think you need any third party software for it
Windows Task Manager should be able to do the job

anyone can recommend me the best antivirus for this year. I found that mcafee viruscan9.0 was a good virus searcher but then it was resource hunger and quite.

hoping to find one with speedy scan and good database in searching those junky worms and viruses.
*
Antivir seems to be light and effective enough to me, though the user interface is a bit...erm..mediaval

Any IM software that combines GoogleTalk and MSNmessenger?
*
Since GoogleTalk is using Jabber protocol, you can use GAIM, which also supports MSN messenger

Refer to this
http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/ans...py?answer=24073

But you can't use audio in GAIM, that's the thing smile.gif

All these while I've been using ACDSee 3.1 as image viewer, and it served me quite well. However I would like to try IrfanView since it's a freeware and was told to be quite 'lite'. Besides, I'm using an old version of ACDSee because the newer ones are bloated with unnecessary things. I use ACDSee just for image viewing and some quick image conversions.

- how much resource does IrfanView take? the acdsee 3.1 takes only around 600-700KB.
- how big is the total application size? the acdsee 3.1 takes only around 2.6MB.

or is there any other image viewer to recommend?

Other than that, before this I came across and image editor which is almost similar to Adobe Photoshop. The layout wasn't that identical, but the functions and tools are just about the same. It's a freeware.... but I forgot the name. Does any of you know this program? Somehow I was thinking of giving it a try.
*
Memory consumption of Irfan View is from 5MB to 14MB...
THe installation file is 884KB (IrfanView 3.98)

For the image editor, did you mean GIMP? Or it is Paint.NET?
QUOTE(ikan_semilang @ Jan 10 2006, 03:06 PM)
Which one good either Opera or Firefox? Thanks.
*
It really depends

To me, I choose Firefox because it is really customizable and flexible (tons of extensions, themes, tweaks, guide etc)

But for machines with low resource Opera might be better because it consumes less resource and it would run smoother on those machines.

Either way, Firefox and Opera offer much better functionalities than the current IE version (IE 6).

Try CCleaner, not only it's a freeware, it also provides other cleaning such as temporary file removing, application removing etc.
