You can use it for testing out other OS ie Ubuntu etc. The key thing is to monitor the SMART values on a regular or daily basis. If the 2 values pending sector count & uncorrectable sector count increases, it's a sign the HDD is going to fail real soon.

Sounds like a connection or cable issue. Try replacing the SATA cable of the problem drive. If still have problem, try connecting to another SATA port. You should be able to see all connected HDDs in BIOS under SATA Configuration sub-menu so you don't really need to boot into Winz just to check whether the HDD is working or not.

Cable can be damaged as well if it's over bend or bend and stressed at a fixed position for long time, which is why there's 90 degree connector available to solve such issue, some mainboard even has side ports to minimize cable bending. Copper wire has its bending limits as well.

Haven't had any experience with the newer Slim Passports. Generally I think WD external drives are pretty reliable. Popular Low Yat vendors like Viewnet and Jayacom should have them.

Here are the Low Yat price lists.

NOTE: Sorry all, I had found the correct Topic: NETWORK ATTACHED STORAGE (NAS) V2
@ https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...&#entry64543498

Hello all,

My next question may consider Out of Topic but it is related to Storage.
I really wish you all Sifu or non-Sifu would care to comment constructively.

My Laptop is running of out of space again though I got myself a 1TB External Storage last year for backup for non-quickie access such as Media and Photos.

I already got a HDD Caddy to replace my Optical Drive and I intend to purchase WD 2.5" Blue 1TB together with Caddy. It is an inexpensive way to solve Storage issue for the mean time. However, another part of me hesitated and hope to get a full-capable NAS such as Synology for solving Storage for the next 5 years, at least. NAS is expensive, but its capability with Pool Storage and RAID Backup for my important Photos are worth it. But the cost is what put me Wait & See.

You may ask Why not just use any old-desktop as NAS.
Honestly, I do not have an old desktop free to be as NAS now.

Thanks you all for your time, reading or/and comment.

That's another good study to add to Google's old harddisk failure trend study released in 2007. Let's hope Google will release an updated study on the failure trends.

While storage technologies are not as fast changing as video and processor technologies, 2 new technologies - Helium and HAMR promise to multiply HDD capacity greatly.

Only used it once awhile back so can't comment on reliability. The version that I used was a resource hogger.
