Hi guys! Please give me some suggestions on where to buy as well. Where can I get better deals? Penang or Lowyat? I heard that Lowyat has plenty of scammers, is it true? And for the lack of built-in motor for Nikon, is it going to be very inconvenient? As I'm planning to get the 50mm f/1.8 as well. This is my first DSLR.

Thanks!

i understand that D5100 doesnt have motor and cannot AF. So what lens should i get to have AF?

Hi guys, I'm going to get a new camera soon but kind of don't know which type to decide.

I used to have a SLR about 15 years ago (was into photography but then later give up due to lack of time, and if pass to random ppl who don't know how to take photo, it'll be a mess).
Then later I get myself a Lumix FZ10 super zoom, which I am very happy about it as come compare to the SLR I used to have.

Now, with the budget of RM2k, should I stick to the super zoom or DSLR?

Obviously, Super zoom is like a compact camera with so many fancy standard functions yet we don't use it all the time in photography, GOOD side, "Now everyone know how to take photo."

Having a DSLR gives me a chance to take good photos and flexibility of customizing the camera for specific functions. Bad side, "Not everyone know how to take good photo with it."

End of my doubts, which decision would be worth the money for me to put in.
Super Zoom (less than 2k) or DSLR (Slightly over 2K)?

Thinking between Sony Alpha NEX-5N vs Panasonic Lumix FZ150.

1080i and 1080p is different. 1080p is of higher quality.

But I really didn't know there are still handycams out there with 1080i? hmm.gif

Those are not DSLRs. They're EVIL cameras.. aka Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens camearas

Sensor wise, not as big as DSLRs and thus, won't have an image quality as good as a DSLR like the Nikon D7000 or Canon 7D for example, and ISO performance(aka low light) would not be as good as a dedicated DSLR smile.gif

But EVIL cameras are smaller lah, more compact. Variety of lenses are a lot less but you can get those adapters to mount Canon/Nikon/Sony lenses but you lose Auto Focus as a result

Lack of built in Motor for Nikon bodies means you cannot get Auto Focus with the 50 f/1.8. Bodies such as D3100 or D5100. D90 or D7000 which has built in motor are way off your current budget.

I'd suggest a 550D kit lens set. Full Auto focus with any current Canon lens. You can grab a 50 f/1.8 for around RM250 or so.

If you plan on shopping in Lowyat or BB area, look out for Foto Shangrila in LYP, Boeing in Sg Wang, Bintang Electronics in BB Plaza and one more shop (I like) near the entrance of BB plaza. Hope this helps.

Try to top up to around RM800 to get the 35 f/1.8G which has a built in motor smile.gif

Or you could go with a 550D kit lens set at @RM2.2k and grab a 50 f/1.8 @RM250. Canon bodies have built in motor so no worries here.

Difference between 550D and 600D is minimal. Only main difference is the swivel screen and the electronic wireless flash transmitter (for strobing)

What's this prostar? Name of a camera shop?

It's a good lens. Quite popular among the Nikon users. Good stuff smile.gif

If you're comfortable and satisfied with a super zoom, why would you want to get back to the DSLR system?

As you already know and experienced, a DSLR system is not cheap. All you're getting with roughly 2.5k to 3k budget is a very very basic set and kit lens. Anything with a longer zoom, you have to come out with $$$. Accessories are also expensive. But the quality you get would be a lot better than what a superzoom can do

I'd go for the NEX series tongue.gif

And be prepared to fork out more $$ for lenses lahhh. Interchangeable system is like that. You'll end up spending more $$ than you would ever anticipated.

Or you can get G1X which has a fixed lens. Nothing to upgrade so you're stuck with what you have. But it's good lah. All in one camera biggrin.gif

Corrections: The common term now is MILC (Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera) or CSC (Compact System Camera).

Not all sensors on MILC systems are smaller than DSLR/SLTs. For instance, the Sony NEX series, Samsung NX series, and Fujifilm X-PRO are APS-C sized sensors, and thus deliver image quality and low light capability at the same level, in a more compact body.

The trade off is larger lenses as compared to the Micro Four Thirds and equivalent camp (Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax, Nikon 1 Series).

I'm looking thoroughly at Nikon d5100 & Canon 600D to replace my Pentax Kr which was lost by a friend of mine. With the budget set I think I could get these cameras with 2 lenses. But I also thinking whether if I should go for something like Canon 60D because I think I will only be able to afford kit lenses (2 zoom lens & a prime) so I'm not sure whether the more expensive body is necessary.

Here's what actually I'm trying to decide based on the budget.

Nikon D5100 with kitlens+ either 55-300mm or 35mm f1.8G whichever first.
Canon 600D with kitlens+either 55-250mm or 50mm f1.8 whichever first
Canon 60D with 18-55 lens.
