GUIDELINES TO MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL ETIQUETTE

FROM VARIOUS SOURCES IN RELATION TO SHARED TRAILS AND NON BIKE SPECIFIC TRAILS

PERSONAL SAFETY
-Wear a brain bucket(yes..that's a helmet) whenever you ride
-Do not travel into remote areas without informing others
-Ride within your capabilities.Ensure that if you want to push your limits, you buddies are around to support you.
-Know your bike and bring the necessary/essential spares.

RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHERS(NON RIDERS)
-Give way to non motorised trail users, i.e. hikers, horse riders, because people judge all cyclist by my actions
-Give way to motorised trail users, ie. motor cross bikes etc, because generally we will end up worse off in an accident.
-Alert others when approaching.Get a bell, or "Excuse me" works quite well

RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHER RIDERS
-Riders have the right of way.If you are pushing your bike, leave the riding line open for others to go past.
-Rider up hill has the right of way.
-Allow faster riders to past

SPEED
-Approach turns and bends in aniticipation that there's someone there
-Make your presence known when approaching someone or any turns

IMPACT ON THE TRAIL
-Leave the wildlife and fauna alone.Magic mushrooms are bad for you.
-Stay on designated trails and avoid destroying vegetation if possible.
-Dont't take short cuts over /around technical sections. If you can't ride it,walk it.
-Learn how to use your front brakes so that you minimise skidding your rear wheel. If you refuse to learn, then ride only in bike parks where people are afraid to maintain the trails.
-Do not litter.Take out whatever you take in.
Practise minimal impact riding, take only photos and memories with you

FUN
-You are to have loads of fun, talk lots of cogs, and make good friends on your ride.
-Develop sense of humor. Some people say it's good for the soul.

Sinbad as for ur Q...
until now i dunno the actual function/usage of LSC and HSC...
but this is wat someone told me...

LSC = controls how plush ur ride is. the lower the setting, the plusher the ride. but u have brake dive and all.
HSC = controls the fork not to bottom out. the higher the setting, the more difficult to bottom out. but once ur fork is in the mid travel, u'll lose plushness.

so the trick here is to set LSC to be plush enough but no brake dive. but not too high until u lose small bump compliance.

as for HSC...2-3 clicks out from fully open will do. bcoz we wouldnt be doing much that involves high speed fork movement...what more bottoming out the fork.

rclxms.gif

anyway this is what i know about LSC and HSC. do correct me if i m wrong. biggrin.gif

If you hensem like me, wear what also hensem. nuffsaid.

LSC is the first half of travel. HSC is 2nd half of travel- to bottom.
LSC if slow, u brake dive coz plush, fast not so plush so not much brake dive.
HSC if slow, u hentam big landing, bottom fast, if fast, not so easy bottom up
normally i play LSC neutral, HSC fast, so bottom slower. textbook said it's good when you drop on rock garden.

But non of the above are really important except the hensem like me part. as long you arent a racer, those settings doesnt really matters.

the most important bit about LSC and HSC is that, the correct setup will determine how fast you can get out off a corner, if you take a sharp corner leaning tight into the berm and your LSC too plush, you'd gonna dive and you cant get out off the corner fast enough. if its too stiff cornering will be a b**** and your rear tyre boleh drift. its all about getting the right setup with your style off riding.

Ouch, my bad. X0 is now carbon, hehe. For performance (weight), X0 seems like a good choice but for fancy (eye-candy), Saint seems like a good one but the design is getting pretty old. yawn.gif

Penang bike shops are so biased, I asked for parts for single-speed cogs and rings. They told me to go BMX shops to find.

What we know is, they already old enough not to ask stupid question and assume we owe them our lives.

they are still here trolling. They got the palm off from us as well.

Heck... if we need to love everyone... we will be the best of best friends in the world.

Superlight is actually not bad.
Becoz my uncle has one and i have ridden it.
just like the name, even with crappy components it is light.
and according to some old timers....it's one of the best single pivot frame...
if u can get it cheap....go ahead...
but when doing kiara...u'll want to go slow...since it's meant for XC...
other than that it's alright...

crankset can make alot of difference in terms of weight. and using 9 speed crankset with 10speed drivetrain might cause shifting problems.

dont ask about frames from brands like XDS/Exitway/raleigh/lerun/RMB.
not being brand snobs, but we havent tried most of these brands and cannot really recommend these.

although my first bike was a lerun solaris, and the frame was as stiff as noodles. changed to tbolt but pedaling was shit too, so changed to merida HFS. 1.4kg frame, triple butted, 6066 aluminium, stiff as hell. press on pedal bike shott forward. and not to mention the geometry was good for xc and climbing.

we stick to mostly popular brands, cos it is easier to find reviews, and if any1 asks about these brands/frames there is a higher chance that we would be able to give our opinions on it.

again not to not look u no up....
but if u thinking to change from an exitway to other exitway...
i say...just forget it and just ride what u have...

The least u could look at is Scott Scale, Merida HFS/TFS or Giant XTC.
Or maybe Trek 8500.

even our sifu here is using XTC. so it shud be good.

99% of the bikes at that price are about the same. we can't really help you. which is why the 1st page is up there.

what we would expect you to do if you want to ask a proper question is to go to a few shops, shortlist a few models from a few brands/shops that you are interested in, let us know the specs, then maybe we can help.

sorry if we cant help you, but if you cant ask a proper question then we cant give a proper answer. smile.gif

I think a few people (IINM, Tim, Xand and Raju) here are using Maxxis High Roller. I used High Roller before, don't really like it. But then maybe the size was small. I used 2.1 inch. Yang lain is using 2.5 kot. Or was it 2.3 hmm.gif

Yesterday I also notice quite a number of people using bigger tyre in front and smaller ones for the rear...wonder how it feels...is it because the front is where traction is more important?

but I experienced wheel spin on my rear tyre during steep technical climbs...is because of the tyre..or too much weight was shifted in front?

If rear slips:
1. Maybe too much weight shifted to the front
2. Tayar memang no grip
3. Too much air in tire
Was it wet yesterday?

I didn't like High Roller back then is because of sketchy feeling when cornering. But then, maybe because tire was too small. The HR 2.1 actually feels like a 1.8/1.9 tire. Smaller casing IINM.

my two cents....apart from checking the pressure, weight positioning, i would look at the rate the crank is spun when climbing these technical and wet sections. if one is spinning too much on low gear, traction will be lost and that will cause wheel spin. a good rythmic pedalling pattern will ensure that you get maximum traction during these climbs.

As Snapshot mentioned ...better consider Specialized, Giant etc...Mongoose is ok la...at the end of the day..it depends on your budget and your commitment to the sport...if you re really commited ...then get a good frame...cause its the main foundation of the bike...the others u can upgrade later...just my 2sen...

with that, it come with free monthly bash, free Jc and free epic hash.
last year they also give each member a water proof bag.

once u join, and if u follow each bash, u see very little 'need' to join jamboree especially the bash trail have certain lvl of std.

Giant for cheapest n value.

mau boutique bike then
yeti asr5 - 5 inc
yeti 575 -5.75 inch
sc LT - 5.5 inch
sc TRC - ~5inch but carbon.

For SC, pls get one with VPP link else i dont think they worth the $..
Wan to differential VPP and none, just look at the SC web price if u malas.
VPP is about 2.5 times more exp for same travel due to the royalty for copyright.

By the way. How does the frame travel being measured? 4", 5", or 7"
Take example at my bike. Scott Spark 2012. SCOTT
As I see. The rear shock only has 4" stroke. But Scott mentioned the rear travel 120mm. rclxub.gif

where got rear shock stroke until 4"!!!
the longest rear shock stroke is only 3.5".

The frame travel is actually the amount of the rear wheel movement along its path.

I ride both? LOL, i cant seem to decide. The thing is that i dont like the glory colour and looks abit weird to me. Are these bike both around the same value judging from the specs?

.my take solely based on kiara terrain. If you ride only DH route in kiara then 7 above. If wanna enjoy most of kiara 5-6 just about perfect. 6-7 needs some MTB.7 above is MTB for sure before downhill. Longer travel for pure downhill kaki.

Obviously I hope to get a FS cause I really like riding at Kiara...

Taking into account the following:

1. Kiara Trail
2. I want something thats not that heavy, helps me climb (with my body weight I dont think I can afford to carry additional weight)
3. But with enough travel for me to enjoy Kiara
4. Though I love going downhill...I dont think Ill be making jumps and bombing it like the downhillers

My logic is ...if you wanna bomb it going downhill..you ll need more travel..which requires a stronger frame therefore the frame will be heavier (carbon out of the question)...I ve researched an notice...XC(lightest)-->Trail(Light)-->AM(Heavy)-->DH(Heaviest)

And I dont want a bike thats too heavy...so I think a 5 inch Trail Bike is just nice

Trance X would be the lightest IINM.

The components claimed to be taken new from Session 8 2011.

My question is, is it worth to swap?  hmm.gif

If u ask me...
Skip the offer.

With the nomad u can enjoy going DH albeit a bit slow...
But with the Glory...i dun think u can enjoy riding uphill....

been there, done that, hate it.

ive used an XC, Trail/AM, DH, FR...
trust me...
A trail/AM is the best way to enjoy your weekend ride...
unless u r joining the DH fellas....then u have no choice la...

but to tell u frankly...
Glory is very hard to sell off...well not just glory...DH stuff in general...
if u plan to change bike in the future...skip the Glory...

For most all purpose ride, max is 5.75 FS. You will not need more unless u go for purist DH; else you will having very challenge ride as it's PITA is climb. Generally there is no lifter in Msia except in Bkt Ramli, so what come down must go up 1st (by pedaling).

Now even to decide between 5, 5.5 and 5.75 is VERY dif. blush.gif

From all of your posts. Its better not to swap. If you wanna add another bike, its ok, but swap, nah. Don't go for it.
Ask yourself: Why would the Glory owner wants to swap in the first place?

the glory u need to change the rear shock. a fox van ok la for goin over roots, and gnarly stuff - taking drops sure habis la.

and the glory is ONLY for DH. pure DH kakis. u know with a DH bike pedal frm kiara park to KSH also mau nangis, apa lagi for leisure ride.

stick with the nomad. or lower the stem and belasah DH. jangan lupa full face yeah

5 inch light bike will be giant trance, blur or yeti and Scott. Hehehee! Their diff only like 100-200gr

LoL! This week I go window shopping.  brows.gif

I prefer ayam than that trance

Major... Don't talk about weight. Just early morning before ride, go for a dump.
Heavier bike will give u better control. Climbing is depending on the geometry rather than the weight.
Of course, at the end, whether u carry 111kg or 115kg does make a slight diff. All u need is a bit of diet and a dump.

Light bikes on kiara trails not as fun as heavier bikes in kiara.
This is true story.

I'd go for 5 incher not because of weight but geometry.
U can ask reza too. We both were on trance 5 incher. Both r on am/enduro bike now.
So... Dig deep and know what u want.

Well said. Expert is always Sifu whistling.gif

Got 1 noob question here sweat.gif : That is a lots of AM bike in the market.. For instance,
1) Yeti 575, AS-R, SB66
2) Giant Trance
3) Intense Tracer-2
4) Spec Enduro
5) SC Blur LT
6) Ibis Mojo
7) Trek Fuel EX, Trek Scratch
8) Commencal Meta AM
9) Others.... You name it....

I know that brand and setting are solely depends on personal preferences.
But is anyone here mind to comment on the bikes I listed above?
I just wants to know more on the personal review, experiences, price worthiness???

If we know or experienced all... There r few things about us.

Either we r a bike reviewer or we have nothing else better to do.

All brands have their own pros and cons. No brand dares to say their bike is the best as at the end, it is always falls back to the rider.

As mentioned... Design, look and color always play the biggest criteria to me.

Keep in mind, some makers make sole purpose bike and some try to make multi purpose bike.
At the end, u gain some, u lose some.

Just make sure you get a bike which is future proof. Like get one with 142 rear thru axle. Don't go with models which use too much propriety stuffs. Will make you cry when you need to change that one propriety thing. For example, Giant Over Drive 2. And for the rear suspension, make sure Fox or RockShox has the length (eye-to-eye * stroke length) of that shock just in case you want to change or replace it later.

142x12 is being adapted by most brands. Trek, Specialized, Intense, Giant, to name a few. It seems like 142 is going to be the future, but dunno lah, 135 people still using oso. This is just my opinion. tongue.gif

Maybe my RS SID will be retired and subsitute with Musang Talas 120-150, 15QR Kak Shima.
Much cheaper than change bike. My wife wouldn't notice too.. If she happen to noticed it..
It will be much easier to handle than CHANGE Bike. Win-win solution brows.gif

For normal ride.. (Keep 120mm)
Downhill at Kiara (switch to 150mm) thumbup.gif

Go do some read up on bikes like scratch air, spec enduro... And know what they say about climbing and downhilling.
Regardless, with 150mm, ur bike will do better but if your current RS already able to change to 160, having a fox talas will not show any major diff.

I'd say... Check the geometry. And color... whistling.gif

LoL~ Seems like many TREK fans in this forum.
Perhaps most of the Sifu's here using it. notworthy.gif

By the way, can I know how much is the estimated price for:-

1) Trek Slash
2) Spec Enduro
3) Yeti SB66, just a full bike price (Roughly) icon_question.gif

Too bad I only have idea on Giant and Scott's price. rclxub.gif
