Need some advice on tuning floor tom.
Aiming for D 73 Hz (from the drum set tuning guide), find that the head is too floppy, not tight, and sounds weird. Anyone here has tuned the floor tom to 73 Hz and it sounds good? Got this idea from a video on tom tuning. May now tune it higher at 90-100 Hz. Hope then I can still get the low beefy bass I want. Appreciate your tips. P/S Using 16" Remo heads. Checked the labelings on the head but no indication of which should be the top and which should be the resonance. Do they indicate the top and bottom on the heads? Or do we just feel the head thickness? This post has been edited by plumberly: Oct 20 2022, 07:34 PM |

A. Know any place I can get cheaper tunebot and drumdial besides Shopee, Lazada and Amazon? Any second hand?
Or other methods or apps to do the same job? I am using pianotune apps but it cannot ignore the top 18% and bottom 18% frequency. No need to be that technical and precise, just use my ears to tune them? My ears and brain are not at that level yet. Ha. B. I thought the tom pitch is mainly from the top head and the bottom head is for resonance. Surprised to see a video where the bottom head governs the pitch (when the top and bottom heads are at the full octave). Thanks. |

Found this useful drumless tracks site. My apology if this site is as common as McDonald's for drummers! Ha. Any other similar sites? Thanks. |

I just realised this yesterday while trying to retune my floor tom, to get a deeper beefy bass. This may be old news to drummers here, found out that when I put a piece of A4 paper folded in half on the batter head, it gives me the lower bass I want when I hit on the paper. And with a lower volume which is what I want as well.
Tried that on my high and mid toms, and the same deeper bass! Bingo. Try that on your toms and see. |

Well there is an app called Moises.ai where you upload your favourite tracks and it will then separate the tracks for vocals, guitar, piano, bass, drums and others into a multi track. You can then mute either tracks so that you can turn it into a drumless or bassless, etc and you can play along with it. raminguitar liked this post

QUOTE(Aydee @ Jan 5 2023, 09:01 AM) Hi, any good tips to share for this beginner? What I have realised is, dont always follow what they say on the net. Try it out yourself and then adjust. Eg throne height (1/3 of my height results in leg and back pain, the beater on the kick drum an inch or so above the center gives me a better tone, 5A Promark sticks are bagus, etc). |

He is one of my favourite singers and drummers. His son is also a drummer. Saw a video about him and his son recently (in Drummeo?). |

QUOTE(plumberly @ Jan 5 2023, 01:11 PM) Hi, any good tips to share for this beginner? Generally when i play the typical matched grip, my setup is always symmetrically straight. I usually sit higher with my legs angled slightly downwards. As matched grip is kinda low position grip (around waist/belt height). Also my toms are angled just slightly towards me. This allows almost neutral position of my wrist as i move from snare to rack toms to floor toms. What I have realised is, dont always follow what they say on the net. Try it out yourself and then adjust. Eg throne height (1/3 of my height results in leg and back pain, the beater on the kick drum an inch or so above the center gives me a better tone, 5A Promark sticks are bagus, etc). For traditional grip, usually i follow the marching snare style where the snare is kinda angled more and then build the toms around that natural angled left hand going round the kit. These guidelines which i learned from many drummers especially Dave Weckl helps me to be almost water like fluidity in motion when playing. |

Too high, can feel ache in my right leg and back (I play heel down). Modified again and now slightly higher than the original. Not used to heel up which most people say is better for speed and power. Feel my front toms are further away than I want, constrained by Yamaha's toms' support on the kick drum, wish that the support is closer to the drummer. But their YESS design may dictate the tom support location. Dont plan to get tom stands to get the toms closer to me. Guess I will learn with the current tom locations. For traditional grip, usually i follow the marching snare style where the snare is kinda angled more and then build the toms around that natural angled left hand going round the kit. *** After many trials, think my mid tom orientation is now 90% OK for me. These guidelines which i learned from many drummers especially Dave Weckl helps me to be almost water like fluidity in motion when playing. *** Wah, a sifu here. Are you into rock, jazz, etc? The best drummer you can recommend for me to follow in the web? Thanks. |

QUOTE(plumberly @ Jan 7 2023, 06:46 PM) Well generally heel down, you would sit lower but once you start playing more intricate stuff on the bass drum, that's where heels up becomes more common. Heels down are usually more common in soft to mid level dynamics.I'm also using playing on Yamahas too. Stage Custom (8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 toms, 14 snare and 22 bass drum, basically full size) and just a basic tom holder on the BD itself. Sometimes it may feel too far, sometimes too close, so it's more of a getting used to your own comfort zone cuz after all it's finite in distance. Well i'm not a sifu at all, just a serious hobbyist only. There are some really amazing rock drummers out there but I'm mostly into the Jazz Fusion scene where musicality and technicality need to be extremely high. Hit me up in the PM and we can continue there as well cuz there's a lot to it. |

A quick one, can you recommend a good and simple jazz song I can try and see? Cheerio. |
