ADA soil is new. I placed some substrate from established tank in a plastic bowl & put in the new tank, and already did water change yesterday. Added water from established tank into this tank too.

I don't have ammonia test kit but tested the nitrite level. Still 0 ppm today. Anyhow moved some minnows from my established tank into the new tank as 'sacrificial lamb'. They seemed to be enjoying themselves there.
*
Think should be cycled unless all your beneficial bacteria is useless/died, there must be nitrite detected if tank not cycled as new ADA soil leech tonne of ammonia.

if we use ADA bacter ball and purigen, will they reduce the cycling time?
*
Bacter Ball help but not purigen, the fastest way to cycle a tank is to use old filter/media and water from established tank, temp above 27'c and
good aeration.
It also depend on the soil , ADA soil you need a huge army of beneficial bacteria to counter the huge amount of ammonia it leech.
Only use purigen after tank is cycled to remove organic waste & polish the water.

Woohoo...got my cherry shrimps & are now in my tank. They seemed really active exploring their new home.

I tried feeding them a small crumb of algae wafers but they don't even want to touch it. What do you guys feed your shrimps?

Congrat! , i will be selling some sample size shrimp foods in a couple of days, you maybe interested.

Is that your shrimp tank picture ? the ADA soil color look greyish.

hahaha. you really2 funny, bro biggrin.gif .

so, actually, how much can a 2ft hold shrimp?300 pcs?
*
umm, that is challenging question, my 2ft hold around 200++ if include those newborn, need to move some out, too congested in there but
feeding them is easy, 1 pellet shrimp food normally can feed >30 shrimp but my army can took 4 to 8 pellet per days and no leftover to be see.

Wah my shrimps are having molting frenzy in my new shrimp tank. The molted shells are everywhere and they are hiding a lot.
*
Hiding after molting is normal cos their body are soft and easy fell prey to others, so they hide till their shell harden.

How long does it take for them to get their shell harden? Also is it normal that they don't eat during this time? Dropped a piece of shrimp pellet but they don't seem to be interested.
*
I don't have the exact answer, cos there is so many of them in my tank, can't locate the one that molt and observe him.
Mr.Google said few hrs till 72 hrs, but i buy the few hrs theory.
You mean not even one of them touch the food?
Shrimps are scavengers, they can't stop looking for and eating foods, if they do then there must be something wrong.

Most of them huddled behind my windelov plant. Only can see 4 or 5 going around the tank looking for food. Some shed shells around where they are hiding though. Those are also food to them right?
*
Yup , they eat back the old shell for calcium & nutrient. This is a shrimps only tank? if mix with fish , they normally hide alot cos
of feeling threaten by fish.

Mine is a shrimp only tank. Not sure why they keep hiding. Am using HOB filter, so there's some water current. Don't think that's an issue right?
pH reading is 5.5. Is that too low? Nitrite reading still 0 ppm.

I have a very strong urge to lift up my plant and shoo all of them out.. but I know it's a very bad idea. tongue.gif

i boiled around 2-3 minutes, until the leaf look like "layu"...let it rest for half and hour...then rinse a bit with tap water to make sure it really cold off..not all of em like it..have to search for other type of vege..saw at lfs they throw in chinese cabbage..will try that...LOL...
add more water same level as your outlet of ur HOB...i think current too strong..your p.h a bit low..what type of shrimp u keep? low pH is not good for your BB...
*
Mari mari marimo... that alot of them , each worth 20pcs of cherry.
Ya , agree PH 5.5 is a concern, notice that in my new shrimps tank as well, shrimps not that active when PH below 6.
my other tank PH stable at 6.4, they enjoy it.
more read here-> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_shrimp
Don't disturb the plant especially with ADA soil underneath, may lead to ammonia spike.
Top up more water like flipmode suggest or reduce the flow, i suggest you add in aeration(air pump) either on air stone or small sponge pump,
aeration help increase PH abit and shrimps really enjoy oxygen rich environment.

O that is a good way to stop them from breeding like rabbit.

flipmode , you use normal or organic cultivated spinach ? cos my shrimps like spinach so much and yours!!!

normal one...i think i want to plant myself organic spinach..still looking around for organic soil, organic fert & seed. any idea where to get this things? saw in mydin usj organic seed spinach..but no organic soil..
*
no wonder your shrimps don't eat it , they like organic spinach only, some more none organic may have pesticide residue and chemical fert residue, becareful may kill all your shrimps.
Think buy cheaper and easier , i brought organic spinach from Justlife outlet in mid-valley, RM4 a whole big bunch, can last > 2 mth if give one leaf a day.

So what do u guys think?
Is it ok? I read that the JBL Manado itself that keep water hardness..
icon_question.gif  icon_question.gif  icon_question.gif
*
JBL Manado if can provide high GH, maybe can be use for Sulawesi shrimps but need to test the TDS first.
if all seem all right for your shrimps then let it be. Only when you notice they dying or not breeding then make changes.
