sorry to burst ur bubble, but not everyone is spinning prog  and with diff genre comes diff styles/methods

aren't all songs are played in key?
is it possible to compose a song without any key?
as far as i know even kick drums of different skin tension would produce different pitch/ key.
if all songs have keys so doesn't that qualify to be matched harmonically?
in regards the genre i guess any genre would at least have a synth bass or melody or in that case any instrument which might so happen to have a key? what do you think? i might be wrong...

i believe that in any genre they would have to adhere to certain rules of music when composing is being done. and i suppose that means instruments are sequenced in such a way that chords are supposed to match within their own range. and with that you can conclude that the whole song is played in maybe d maj or something hence we would have something known as canon in d by pachabell (that is actually what the d stands for)? what do you think? this is my own opinion after all? do you disagree?

yes i do agree that different genre come with different styles of mixing. i acknowledge that. and i didn't specify prog. maybe i did but i dont recall it...
the harmonics mixing is to help you pick your next song, its not a mixing technique or method by it self.
it does not dictate the next track that is going to be played. well you could use it and maybe you need not use it. it depends. but if you feel it enhances your performance why not use it?

not trying to argue here.i better say first nanti you marah i... just have different opinion.

the umbrella has a stalk right? that is the batang la...
in republic there is this giant umbrella and there is a platform above the ground attached to the stalk (think kl tower with a umbrella. the part where people go and see the scenery is where the dj mixes la.) icon_rolleyes.gif

all this is true when considering the genre ur playing is prog/house, meaning it emphasize of seamless mixing.. yes all songs/tracks have keys, so if ur saying harmonic mixing is a tool to choose the next track to play, basically u wanna have a nice transition from one track to another yeah? techno djs on the other hand tend to have an abrupt/rough style of mixing, playing with the energy of the dancefloor to make it as a 'roller coaster' feeling to the entire set, this is where i would say harmonics mixing it not being used, they'll scratch, cut and 'effectize' their way out/in to a mix just like that, and i wouldnt say its not effective cause the dancefloor still goes mad hehe..

Added on May 19, 2008, 2:06 ambtw anyone knows where i can get a small sampler? wanna incorporate it with my mix.. saw one the size of an ipod with 8 buttons, that looks like what i need

is it possible that a paticular techno dj does not drop songs but in fact rely on smooth transitions?

because on the matter of style of mixing i think it is really up to an individial on which styles to use...

i believe if some1 would to just copy styles then it would not be good one must obtain his own style so punters can identify it as his/her signature style... like carl cox i know he likes to use the method which you said just now.

maybe i dont really know techno/ hardstyle that much maybe cause i dont enjoy it... but i think not all techno dj has to conform with the particular style you mentioned.. what do you think?
is it possible for a techno dj to use harmonics to help sort his/her playlist?

you should play what the crowd wants..
if you are not familiar with hardstyle then i suggest you deline the gig. because a dj should have a good understanding of his/her music in order to work the crowd.. the music is your tool and by reading the crowd then you need adequate knowledge on your music to pick the song which is required.
but well that is if they only want hard style... if they are okay with other genre's then play the genre's which they are okay with la.

my 2 cents...

Just an opinion from one of the crowd; just play what they like, and don't need to be gay with mixing. They don't care tongue.gif biggrin.gif

they might, but from what ive heard its not viable. just imagine a particular dj uses harmonics for his set, or did a complete analysis of the tracks and what he is gonna play (set), if he's going for a tour, meaning all his sets for every place is going to be the same (considering only one of the tracks will follow nicely with one of the other), unless he is bring his whole collection of vinyls! (this does not apply if its a digital system hehe). from what i can tell, they'll bring a cart of the best tracks of his collection atm, irregardless of key, and having the same set of tracks played in a diff sequence for diff vanue, keeping the mix fresh and mixing on-the-fly, if i can put it that way.. i think the ability to mix tracks without 'pre-programming' the set is a sign of a truly talented dj

what style r u familiar with? just dl some hardstyle tracks and test out if u can mix it ler in that case.. or like procon said, just decline it, unless they have awesome gears which u can f*ck around with, then go for it! hehehe

i agree, as i said earlier song selection makes up for 70%

QUOTE
in my own opinion. having techniques in mixing accounts up to only 30% of your whole performance but picking the right songs or a good song selection will amount up to 70% of the performance.
i am sure you wouldn't want to hear a fantastic beatmixing dj whom plays rubbish songs aren't you? and most non-dj people dont give a nuts if you have great skills in beatmixing or not, if you realise they care more about the music that is being played. i have heard plenty of djs whom just slam songs in all night long but still get good crowd response. its because the music that dj chosed was good.

u are a bedroom dj ? wat u mean to bedroom 1st ? ur home katil ? or BedClub DJ which usually people call it bedroom ? as u say u lik hardstuff just play harddance music ,example Showtek , DJ Zany , The Prophet , Technoboy Donkey Rollers , Local Elite BassAgents u can download it at limewxre or if u wan high quality one just buy at beatport.com ,

when i start to dj-ing , i play hardstyle , but when the time pass u will feel that hardstyle got a bit sakit kepala if u face it everyday cause really the beat is very hard , until now i play commercial dance music like latest Leona Lewis Bleeding Love Clubmix those .... remember u must know what u like to play , u are the one who mixing the song , not the song mixing u =)

Im a bedroom DJ which into trance as my main genre but no restriction to other genre such as house, electro and techno. First of all is not what a big gig, it is just my friends uncle birthday so he asked me to play. Without doubt, i would love to play pure trance but because of the audience and some of my friends they kinda prefer those harder stuff. I understand that im the one who gonna select the tracks not the audience but if you dont play what the audience / the theme wants, the people wont get the mood its just plain dull. I agree with procontavia, study the crowd first then only the selection of tunes. So is it possible for me to play tech and hard trance and progress to techno or electro?

you said friend's uncle birthday? so u sure the group of unlces can tahan hardstyle? just because you friends do doesn't mean the uncles can u know? i really cannot picture uncles partying to hardstyle (cant imagine my dad would to anyway)...

as for what i would do i would start the night off with some barstyle house, chillout kind. insert some top 40 along the way. open the floor to dedications. put on some commercial rnb and hip-hop or commercial dance or pop or anything that will float your crowd's boat, you really need to read the floor. but i keep in mind i have another age group of audience here. the uncles. play something they like. for example they are in their mid thirties. so accordingly i would play some late eighties or early nineties which has a good beat. but all in all i would have a continuity of flow.

then from now i have roughly an idea of what the crowd need/ wants . as the night progresses you could play some old skool stuff disco or house or techno then you can progess genres towards hardstuff (if you feel thay want it)... as you get later into the night people are less sober than they are when they came so i guess that they will be more open to harder stuff....

i guess this qualifies more of a mobile gig instead of a full blown rave or something.
