keep your old sim active till you get smses confirming the switchover happening... don't use the new sim till the old one goes deactive

changeover only take a few minutes so you shouldn't loose anything...

It may be an activation sms sent by your iPhone upon detecting a new sim. However, such an sms is silent - you wouldn't find it in the messaging app.

Yes, they use sms to confirm your number. Apparently there is a silent reply sms from Apple server too.

In my experience some times settings change themselves due to app or OS updates, even SIM card change. Need to carefully check back everything is still set as expected.
