hi sifu sekian,

is this water heater problem easy to DIY repair with basic skill(pump and heater light off, ELCB working)?

or just purchase a new one?

Never DIY repairs for high-risk / high-powered appliances like water heaters, unless you are qualified to do so. Either get the brand's certified technician to service it, or if you are not willing to pay for the servicing fee / spare part replacement fee, then I suggest you to just get a new one.

Anybody can recommend a good water heat with pump that is reliable? Not into fancy tech, just basic and last long

I went to several electrical stores, all of them recommend this model. https://joven-electric.com/my/product-categ.../sl30-series-my

It's Joven latest model, I did not get this model because the design looks dated. But if you don't care about the design, you can consider it.

U can just go on Shopee / Lazada to check the product reviews and ratings from previous buyers, and make an educated decision using those data.

By far I see that CENTON EcoSerene has the best ratings and reviews, this one. Price looks very economical as well, and its 4.2kW, so it'll generate hotter water compared to other brands (other brands r usually only 3.6kW to 3.8kW).

Your house no central pump but still got good water pressure on 1st floor? You can probably just get the non-pump version.

My old house used. Changed to storage dy.
Solar is convenient, but your electricity bill skyrockets during rainy season. For example, my area non-stop rain recently so anyone using solar would have to run electricity to heat the huge water tank (180L-300L is standard).
Also need to clean once a year to maintain efficiency and prevent moss. Either you clean yourself or hire people for a few hundred to come and clean. My old house was clay tile roof and they cracked when the workers climbed onto the roof to clean.
Basically solar is a nice option, but overall expensive and got some long-term concern. Would personally use gas/heat pump if I needed the capacity since I don't need to climb onto the roof then.

Thank you so much for the inputs! Seems like I would give it a pass, might as well install the normal solar panel in that case.

So, I was thinking of getting a storage heater installed, but the plumber told me it's not durable and the copper pipe inside the wall might break easily.

Instead, he recommended getting an instant water heater and pairing it with a waterfall shower.

What do you think?

Never heard of such a thing before. I'd get a second opinion from another plumber, there should be zero problem if installed correctly.
Problem with instant water heater is that the heating capacity is generally not enough for rain shower.

If u have a bathtub, definitely need to use storage water heater, as instant water heater won't be hot enough.

If u are using rainshower, warm water travelling up from the instant water heater to the rainshower head will pass thru the rainshower metal pipings, which cause quite a bit of heat loss. So better to get instant water heaters with higher power ratings (higher power rating generates hotter output water), eg. above 4kW range like CENTON models. I'm using CENTON Serene 4.2kW with rainshower, output water temperature is satisfactory, but do not expect storage water heater kind of hot water temperature.

for 4.2kW, make sure you have 25A breaker for the incoming supply, don't use those 15A round pin plug and socket.

wanna ask about the built-in safety device. i see some models is using those electrnic type (like EELS by Joven) where you press a button to reset. some is using those mechanical ELCB (panasonic and some Joven models) where you need to push up the level to reset.

would like to know, which technology is better in term of safety? since both are rated at 10mA. personally i would prefer the mechanical type as it's similar to those used in the main DB, but would like to hear if the electronic type is better now due to the recent tech etc.

thanks

All instant water heaters between 3.57kW to 4.462kW (which is the power rating range of majority of the water heaters sold in the Malaysian market) have the same requirements according to Suruhanjaya Tenaga's guideline, as shown above. So it is not just 4.2kW, but 3.6kW and 3.8kW too. Definitely recommended to follow, but some people unfortunately chose to save cost and use underspec cables, RCDs, or switches, risking their own lives.

And yes agree with u that plug + socket connection is a big NO for bathroom, also as mentioned in Suruhanjaya Tenaga's guideline, as shown below.

I am using this CENTON Splashproof Connector to replace my existing 3-pin socket (using the same junction box, just replace the front cover), bought from Shopee here.

ELCB is dinosaur
Only 10mA RCD can save you

ya actually i already got the 10mA RCD at the DB

but since the water heater itself comes with extra protection, just wanna see which one is better
