Hey, i need some help with my pre U thingy.. im very keen in studying medicine in the future.I know i got choices such as JPA and etc. But can I know the full procedure in fulfilling my dreams. For now, i cant hope on my trials as i know my result is not to what i expected. however, what are the options i have if i failed to get JPA. what can i do to get to be a medical doctor. and im very interested in doing it overseas. and financial wise im not capable of doing it without loans or scholarship.

in short, i just hope you guys will share with me some alternatives besides jpa to study medicine overseas with the help of loans or what so ever. =)

i will apreciate it.. thanks

First of all u hav decide what course to study edi. So, what i can advise is just use the result if hav 5credit above which MQA low qualification u can just in Fountation in Business Study. Dun waste ur time in A-Level cos expensive and this waste u 1 and half year than fountation only 1 year. Fountation in business make u easy to get in future in Business course either in diploma or degree. Anyway Diploma mean to those student who hav only 3 credit and below 5credit in SPM. If u hav 5 credit above just go in 1 year fountation + 3 year degree make u more faster gratuate and safe cost fees. This my consultant advise to u hopefully can help u smile.gif

You can enter STPM, ace in it and apply for local universities. That would save more compared with going to overseas, and it that does not work, with a very good STPM result, u can still go for local medicine programs in IMU, AIMST, PMC, Manipal, etc.

Bear in mind that JPA scholarship, u need to have straight As result and good co-curriculum achievement and places are limited.

Other source of funding would be corporate scholarship or scholarships offered by private institution. Heard that UTAR will be offering medicine programme in the future, so u would have more alternative and cost saving method to study medicine.

Regards~

i would like to ask, which private colleges do offer STPM?

i would like to take on STPM but not at a school; as i would like to set myself in a much condusive environment besides seeing uniforms and teachers whos reputation lies within low grade educational lectures

any ideas? hints?

and oh, i heard that taking stpm has longer schooling hours.. is it true? how do you compare it with others (or , is there any comparison at all?)

Yeah, STPM is a great help. I can apply JPA using my STPM can't I? And what is good about doing it in Manipal etc? Does it make any difference in studying in a local Uni?

UTAR is offering medicine? That's great! Anyway, I can always do my Masters and specialist in stuffs in overseas right?

Sorry for bombarding u with loads of questions. Thank you =)

TARC is an established tertiary education institution, so its good. But, IMO, engineering should always go for UNITEN. They specialize in engineering.

Hie there,

Sorry for late reply, haven't being into this section for some while. smile.gif Manipal Medical College is just like other private medical school in Malaysia, and it has twinning with universities in India, where that nation is one of the most famous destination for medical students. However as for all private institution, the fees are exorbitant. The good thing about public universities medical programme is undoubtedly the cost of doing it.

For UTAR medical degree, if it is recognised, which it will be when the pioneer batch graduated, you could either apply for master in medicine (specialization) in local univ, eg: UKM or take up fellowship exams in certain colleges of medicines worldwide.

In my opinion if youre a very focussed person and want to stick to only one type of course and you really want to excel in a specific career then go for foundations. But if you cannot do it then sorry la my fren have to start from scratch which of course no one wants to do...

if youre fickle minded and a loaded person then go for STPM/A-Levels. This is like a cushion for when you decide you cannot do a certain degree course. you can just change degree course if you dont want because you got teh qualification maa...

i've been on this forums for a while, but recently just registered. i'm a lecturing architect in UTM, been here for almost 5 years now. i've been involved in several accreditation processes especially on private institutions in malaysia, and i would like to share what i've come to know. topic owner/moderators, u guys can edit this post as u see fit, for the benefits of all. i might be repeating a few points already made, but i'm just putting it down to preserve a little structure to my post.

AFTER SPM

assuming u're going for tertiary education, here are ur options (applies for both public or private institutions):
    i. study for STPM
ii. study at A-level (or equivalent)
iii. study in a matriculation programme
    iv. study for a diploma
    v. study for certificate level (last choice, my fren)
remember, the objective here is to get ur degree as soon as possible, coz there's no point of settling for anything less. here are the details:

i. study for STPM

STPM is accepted as an A-level qualification. some places regard this paper as even higher than A-level, but lets not touch on that. STPM is cheap. it's quite broad, covers a variety of subjects, and open for all. u can study/sit for STPM almost everywhere in malaysia. and it's quite easy to get in (compared to my time...)

STPM is also internationally recognized, so if u passed ur STPM, u can apply anywhere u want. be advised that u might need an IELTS or TOEFL to prove ur english proficiency (costs around RM400-RM550)

ii. study at A-level

a lot of institutions now offer A-level papers. i cant really say which institution offers the best. A-level is easier to pass than STPM, covers a variety of subject. the only catch is it can be a little expensive (for those who cant afford to pay by themselves). rate varies to institutions.

iii. matriculation

this is one of the more popular choice these days. the reason being, once u're in the programme, u just need to pass all exams to be admitted to a degree programme. but this applies only to the university offering the programme. for example: u cant use ur matriculation results from UM to apply for UPM.

this programme is not recognized outside of malaysia. so only apply if u're really sure that's the degree u r after. they offer limited subjects, and mostly are tuned/focused to the area of ur degree course.

iv. diploma

most universities and institutions in malaysia still offer diploma programme. u can enrol using ur SPM results. this is one of the most common choice amongst those who couldnt get through to STPM or matriculation programmes. the overall costs would be higher too, but with SPM results slightly lower than everybody, this is the best bet.

after ur diploma, u can immediately enrol to 2nd year degree programme, and sometimes if u excell, they'll let u skip 2nd year altogether (very special case lah).

v. certificate

this is ur last choice. certificate usually offers very, very generic skill, and usually does not involve manipulation or implementation of knowledge. (which i forgot to mention: skill and knowledge is two very different things). but due to its short duration, some of u might opt to take a certificate to boost ur application.

these can be very basic certs, for example: "cert of basic PC assembly and repair"; "cert of ledger management"; or "cert of autoCAD" (just to name a few). usually the course range between 3 days to 6 months, depending on the depth. but this will seriously BOOST ur applications.
so that's about all the options u have after SPM in malaysia. i'd be happy to answer any questions or queries.

just additional info, check out the ib diploma programme, quite a good alternative to A-levels. and the UCAS tariffs are just... too good to be true xD
