im using iphone 4 and never jailbreak and having the same issues like you guys, no service or searching signal. i will try using manual rather than automatic search.
i believe is an iOS 5 bug. i have updated to iOS 5.0.1 and the problem is worse.

Try doing a fresh restore from itunes. I'd do that too but i need my messages to be intact, itunes doesn't allow me to only restore itunes and contact, which is stupid.

I restored to 5.0.1 yesterday, seems fine, call in call out everything working. shucks iphone.

I have been experiencing the same thing.
Using iPhone4 with iOS5, never JB before.

Keep on searching for network.
When finally found network, I couldn't send SMS, sms keep in "sending" mode.
I couldn't make call, when press Call icon, phone will hang at dialling mode.

freaking frustrated.
Any help?

Same problem that I experience after upgrading to IOS5. Thought my phone got problem. The phone will not reconnect back to carrier once you lose it. e.g. Entering the lift and exiting the lift. You need to restart the Iphone. A complete fresh restore will immediately solve this issue; however, same problem may recur. I have some gut feeling that IOS5 is limiting the reconnection timeout duration to carrier once you lose it. This is to preserve the battery life. I am totally fine before upgrading from IOS4.1. Another possible root cause will be IOS5 is conflicting with Malaysia Telco if all Telco user like DiGi and Maxis are having similar issue. Let's hope this is fixed asap!

thanks to pipedream and other users comments and suggestions to temporarily fixing the network signal issues dropping after updating to iOS 5.0.1
i search through the apple forums and lots and lots of ppl complaining about battery issues and the cellular network signal dropping faults. i really hope that apple will look into this seriously as is making users more annoyed and miserable.
Anyhow, i will try to restore back to iOS 5 first as the problem is getting worse with iOS 5.0.1 while waiting for apple to released the new firmware.

I think u can't downgrade to ios 5 as apple stop signing the firmware already.

That's something annoying, no turn back. I start to blame my itchy hand to upgrade to IOS5 to try out the iCloud features.

I have upgraded to IOS 5.0.1. Problem not recur yet. Signal deterioration is not prominent yet. Let's cross fingers and wait.

No worry too much.

IOS5 during initial restore, no service issue won't occur but it happens after a few days. Let's observe.

Trouble is, with the ios5. It's is no signal. But with the iOS 5.0.1, it's looks normal....but cannot use phone function! Yes Phone looks normal but with the signals and telco sign on . But cannot use phone function.

Previously I was using semi tethered. Now I take it out. Using normal tet version....which sucks if the phone hang. I really hope they cure this.

One way to check whether your phone could reconnect the carrier is to press *#06# to check your IMEI. If IMEI appears mean your phone is okay. If there is no response with this command means your iPhone is not connected to the carrier. People can call you but your phone will not ring. It's like your phone lose its identity to the carrier. That's what I observe. Some time a reboot helps. Some time it won't. A restore can immediately resolve this but possibility of recurrence is there.

What I do is call my own number....if it say 'currently busy at the moment' means ok...but if its completely quiet...like dead...means A LOT of trouble
