Since your parents are successful, no reason why u cant be as well. Learn to stand on your own 2 feet. Being young is not an excuse. I started off earning just RM1,700 per month and i was also paying RM800 for my new Wira back then. Still i never took a cent from my parents not because they couldnt afford to give but because i didnt want to parade around in something which was not of my own hard work. If i couldnt afford something because of my lower earning capacity back then, i just didnt get it. Simple as that. Personally, i dont see why our parents should support us in any way once we start working.

If it was me in your shoes, i would rather drive a smaller Vios paid 100% by me rather than drive a much bigger car paid for by my parents.  You can see many young ppl in KL driving around in big cars. What do you think when u see them? Usually we say 'ya la he can drive that cuz his parents are rich' right? Most will feel envious but how many will have respect? And even if they did have respect, how much is it for you? I would rather drive something which ppl will say 'ya le he can drive that because he is successful in his career' cuz then the credit is mine alone. I know many wont agree but its a matter of philosophy.

I drove a Vios since 2003 and despite moving into the 5 figure bracket in 2006, i still chose to continue using my Vios till now. Yes i could have afforded a much bigger car. Even now i can easily afford to move into the big league of BMW, Audi, etc but i decided against it as cars are a losing commodity and i didnt think i am at that level yet.

Anyway, the choices you make are yours alone. All i hope is for you to make the correct ones. Cheers!

But when it comes to calculation... I can giv a dp of 43888, then loan for 5-6yrs or may b 7, it'll come to around 1300-1700/mnth... think tats well within my salary limit.. I dont hav a family to support, to me I think this is ok smile.gif (the example I gave is, if I firmly reject my parent's offer, or use the 70k for investment purpose)

So ya, think all these comes to personal preferences smile.gif

5 figure from <30yrs? well... it sounds successful... but to be honest, its quite rare in m'sia I guess...
As for property... hmm... my parents hav already planned it up properly (the one good thing when ur parents are still around  tongue.gif )... I dont know much la... so far I know for penang, the house price had been dropping for at least the past 3-4 yrs already (am saying generally), dunno about KL... So instead my parents have been investing in NZ housing properties (they had made >NZD 1 mil in 6yrs in the appre., prices still raising plus the rents), and apart from few houses in m'sia they hav been invested a lot in palm oil (>100Acres) in m'sia... I think the most stable income in m'sia is the Palm oil land... Housing properties, m not so confident in it so far (may be because m hardly in m'sia)...

Its not like I can behave like a spoiled brat... I'll def try my best to earn my own money and my own investment, but in the meantime, I think I can also make use of some fun as well  tongue.gif

Appreciated for ur advices smile.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

Not sure if you are in mainland or island but, property price dropping in penang? Lol, my dad invested in a few and never once did it drop or fluctuate. In fact the overall market shot up obscenely. Unless you are looking for small 1000sf apartments or condos, the rest are at least 600k and above. By the way, my family just started in the property line a few years back, so not anything big compared with the giants but take my word for it, investing in penang is never wrong. As for your car, if your dad has the ability to give you that, why not? Friends and people i know from the higher society does it. It might help in your career depending on what line of business you are in. Question is would you be able to maintain it?

I dont think any property in prime areas in Penang or KL has ever dropped. Its usually been up up up.

I meant in penang island... heard a few cases of full section house wit carpark and all.. last time saw was like 800k nego which when we saw similar house just down the street from these ones in 2005-6 was like 1-1.1mil.. My parents are never interested in condos...only a few cases we hav seen, cause my parents hardly hav time, just like thrice in a yr, and usually less than one week each visit to penang..

As for the car... I still hav time to think about it, as of now, m plannin to buy.. but lets see la, even proton is comin out wit the perve (not sure how is it).. and if in the end I really want to invest everythin my parents gave and all my money in properties, there is always city or civic.. lol

Added on April 4, 2012, 8:06 pmAs for maintenance... I dont think it'll be a problem for 5k/mnth.. so far, I know the only must change thing about optima is the tires... other than tat, just regular service, and everything is like 200- maximum 600 each service.... other than tat is just the petrol smile.gif Anythin else I should add?

Maintenance is not just restricted to regular servicing. Its also replacement of parts due to wear & tear. This is what car manufacturers do not show u. All of them have servicing schedules where they all claim its a few hundred bucks every time. But what they fail to tell you is the cost of spares.

In the case of Kia, if their parts are not durable (as in previous models), then ull end up replacing them more often and Kia isnt cheap. It will be worse for conti's.

Anybody can spend a few hundred bucks twice a year for servicing, but how many can afford changing other spare parts thru wear & tear?

Lol!! tats y m tryin to minimize this kind of problem by goin through all the forums regarding the quality, chances of breakdown, and if there is any manufacture faults of the car... well, I can say so far so good...
This is one of the reason I may not takin the 508, history is too short (I meant, this car is not available in US, and hardly any european reviews of this car as well) sad.gif

Relax, I may be new to society, but not tat new to cars.. smile.gif

Thx for ur advice though smile.gif

I have the same dilemma now. I am considering the Passat and 508. Tested both and in terms of spec and design, 508 is the choice. But build quality in the Passat is definitely better than 508. It feels much more solidly built. But Im not saying 508 build quality is bad or anything. It good actually, only Passat better. Driving wise, I have to say 508 is better than the Passat. Maybe because of the extra weight, the Passat is a little but less nimble as compared to the 508.

Anyway, so far my decision in on the 508 but I do have my concerns. Its the reliability of the 508. I know the car is new, so not much info but based on the issues I heard about the 308 and 206, 207. Im concerned. I dun want to have the fear of the engine not cranking each time I push the start button. You know what I mean?

So please, anyone (especially 508) owners, please provide some info

Thanks

Well you dont have to worry about the no-cranking part. If you can find my earlier posts, the engine issue has more to do with oil leaks, turbo leaks, premature timing chain wear and tear and the depollution system faulty. So far, I heard only 1 unit of 508 down with the DSF. Some 308's have their timing chain changed in 2-3 years, while some are still running till today without much issue.

Thanks for the info. However, the ones I heard about the 308 is the gearbox. That one is scary

Nasim has sent me the brochure for the 5 year warranty program. Seems the following is not included in the warranty:

1) body work & trim, seat belts, glass, sunroof, fuel tank & rims
2) exhaust system, brackets, hoses, water ingress, pipes, cables
3) in car entertainment, navigation system, audio system

Im not refering to wear and tear parts but i would have expected the items above to be included in the warranty. Can someone shed some light?

I travel to cyberjaya from ampang everyday. 50% of the time stuck in traffic in mrr2, and the other 50% cruising on mex hiway (110kmh-120kmh). 1 full tank can last me 2 weeks before the warning light goes off, around 700km (warning light goes off when there's 10L left in the tank). And the on-board computer shows around 7.9L/100km.

During CNY, I travelled to Perlis, 120kmh all the way (short burst of rempit spirit to 170kmh in couple occasion tongue.gif). Managed to get 800km, and there's still quite alot of fuel left before it reaches the low-fuel zone, I'd say probably enough for another 100km/150km? But then it was pretty hard to find gas station there so I refuel at around 800km. Consumption was around 6.7L/100km, if memory serve me right
