ALAM is more established and have been in existence longer than SMA. ALAM is also a maritime training centre owned by MiSC Berhad, so it's considered part of the Petronas group. SMA is owned by the Shin Yang shipping company from Sarawak if im not mistaken. Both can provide you the relevant certification to become a seafarer.

As a current STPM student, I intend to apply into cadetship the very next window applications to ALAM are open. Will my STPM results bear any weightage to the training programme seeing as how I have already been exposed to the THEORETICAL basics of physics/maths/chem if I were to apply into DME

SPM result is good enough to be used for application purpose. You can insert your STPM result as well but Im not sure if it gives any advantage in application process. But once you are accepted into the DME programme, whatever you have studied before does not give any sort of fast track/carry over credit so everybody have to follow the programme regardless of previous learning background.

After entering ALAM, you will have the chance to get sponsors from shipping company such as AET and MISC.

I have been selected for the ALAM interview. Can I know the process of the interview such as what type of questions they might ask me and also how long will it take for me to know the results. Guide me through the whole interview session and the selection session. My course is Diploma in Nautical Studies so let me know more about it. Thank you smile.gif

The sponsor will pay for your course fee and provide apprentice placement onboard their ship for your cadetship onboard training.

Hi, I am a graduate of EASA BTC Part 147 in Avionics and Dip in Eng Tech of Helicopter Maintenance and about to embark on a new journey for marine industry. I am highly interested in applying for a degree in marine with UNIKL MIMET after brief meeting and chat with MARDEP and some colleagues in American President Line (APL)(singapore). Thus here i am seeking some info on employment possibilities within malaysia and our neighbouring country. and also if you guys do have better idea on how i should proceed with getting COC because i was informed by APL that i needed at least an academic background in marine engineering to allow me going for cadetship with them.

Much thanks for any replies!! biggrin.gif

Greetings fellow seafarers,

I'm currently a final year student in marine engineering from unikl and I'm about to do my practical around february next year. Given the current economy and with the whole retrenchment going on, is it still possible to do my practical on board? Also most of us unikl grads are self sponsored so we'd have to look for these kind of stuffs ourselves 😅

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Good day mate,
U r from electrical background , why dont u become an electrician onboard a vessel?
Stcw 2010 have certificate of competency for electrician onboard the vessel , which require to take oral with marine department. You may check with mardep what is the requirement to take the oral examination .

For your information , onboard dp vessel electrian known as ETO . They r the person who taking care of dp system .
I ve work with eto earning up to 450 usd per day . Lastime eto did not have such high salary , bt with current new type of vessel operating dp system , they are high demand job with good salary. Some new vessel only operating using electrical power instead of main engine.

Do your research , you might find something interesting

Goodluck
