u know what?
I actually draw eyelashes strand by strand, its just that I decrease my pencil's pressure slowly to the tip,
so that it is thick at the root and slim at the hair tip.Another one is I try to make them cross each other so that it looks natural.
What OH- did was drawing them too little and there are big gaps between strands.
try to observe human eyelashes more, and find out why yours look utterly awkward.
oh the new one,and again,I can see the improvement, dont be too rush,it took me 2 days(not the whole 2 days la) just to get the face right.

That works, yes. If you have the time and patience, it creates a nicely detailed result, as long as you don't overdo it.

My method is more towards speed/workflow optimization smile.gif also known as "cheating" tongue.gif wink.gif Again, in the end no one is going to actually see it, so hinting is more useful to me when doing commercial work, where I have time limits.

yeah I want them to be if not 80%,90% alike.
my only problem in drawing portraits is the paper is not white enough,so Im having trouble on brighter parts,I cant achieve the contrast I wanted.

also,lacking in pencils variation...I only got 2B...

If that's the case you may have to compensate for the lack of white by using dark tones (?). Will need softer pencils for that, though, and frankly graphite is just not suitable to create dark tones.

I was thinking the same thing too,but then Im full of hesitation, because I cant maintain the fairness of the skin.
actually my 2B pencils are soft enough to take the task,I deliberately letting it dull.

it is true graphite is not suitable for ultra dark tone, but for the area of the face,I think its enough.
its just Im having problem rendering dark hairs, thinking of using black coloured pencils, but then the tones will not be synced.
u know right?the colour of graphite is not the same with coloured pencils.

I quite like the idea of a sleeping, half-complete cyborg girl. It'll make quite an interesting image, if completed.

i find doing strand by strand for the eyelashes might make the artwork looked artificial.. i suggest using dragonreine's method with will have a more natural outcome.. can add more details by highlighting the strands of eyelashes with a darker pencil like 8b (i often use burn tool if its photoshop) and a sharpened eraser for the lighter tones. this works with hairs and furs

less artificial if it's done right.
but Im just wondering, how to get it done without doing it strand by strand?I mean, the whole concept of drawing are lines and shadings,so yeah, basically eyelashes are lines,so ???????

btw great share pf-l33,wide range of arts.

I like the sketch of your friend, the fact that it was done on the spot and instantly is just great.

and that zangetsu too.

It depends entirely on the resolution of the painting. If the eyes are going to be the focus, then it's fine to draw them in strand by strand

BUT, even then, the results may still look unrealistic, especially if you are not careful with the placement and direction of each eyelash.

And simply by making the edge of the upper eyelid a thick, dark line, you can already give the illusion of thicker lashes.

An example, from here: http://www.pocketmole.com/tutorials/eye/

You can see that even without drawing in all the lashes strand by strand, the eye looks pretty good, and at a distance (aka if the portrait is a bust/waist-up or full body work), the lack of exact rendering doesn't matter.

Which is a long winded way of saying that, in the end, sometimes it's better to keep things simple, and to hint at details rather than fuss over them. Sometimes, time and practical constraints prevent you from painting every pore, or drawing every single strand of hair, or every leaf in a tree. The image as a WHOLE needs to work, and if it doesn't, working on the nitty gritty details will never make it any better.

what i do is roughly shade the area where the eyelash will cover, then add some strands over for additional details. even with high reso it will still look fine.
why i said doing strand by strand will look unrealistic is because of our strokes. it will look like wires stuck to the eyelid unless you can shade every single strand and place them like nature did.

use the mixer and mix the colour a little to produce more tones for colouring. helps smoothing out your shades
