I'm interested to see the "in-progress" images for that. I wonder how you painted that based from this photo:
*
i just use blur brush and keep stacking them till i get the tone i want.. with multiple layers of course

... never had proper lessons on painting in photoshop but yea.. i just recently learn about using smudge, burn and dodge tool to paint

Dear sifus... is there any easier way to paint realistic hair?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

took me one hour+ for the hair alone and still got a long way to go cry.gif

@ Bonchi

No real way around plain ol' hard work if you want to get all those details in.

Although I must ask, are you painting them in strand by strand or something? blink.gif
*
am using the bristle brush but yea... still strand by strand sweat.gif ... some tutorial i find online using smudge to draw hair.. yes its faster but the edges are blury. guess there's no other way then sad.gif

QUOTE(Adamiquesce @ Oct 12 2011, 03:26 PM)
lol bonchi,I find the hair is the most fun part, but if you want it to be more detailed, then be patient.
I've saw a guy who stop his drawing because the hair makes him crazy.
*
haha.. im starting to lose my patients already..

@agito thnx ... the images you showed me made me confirmed that there's no easy way to do hair ><

for me.. i just like turning photos into those.... painted movie posters sweat.gif. I still cant really draw anime characters/concept characters on photoshop yet.. the brushes makes it look kinda awkward to me ..some what looks real but with weird anime eyes.. i intend to keep touching up till it ends up looking like a freak of nature. i guess i still need to learn more but ive got no one to guide me sad.gif ... never been through any art classes, all these while its all trial and error.

so for cartoon/anime i usually, ink, scan or sketch in photoshop and export to illustrator to vector trace and paint it there doh.gif which is much easier for me

i guess its the angle of the shot that makes it look a little distorted.. dont have a scanner for yuri sad.gif and no such thing as liquify to adjust on paper to make it perfect laugh.gif (whats drawn is drawn no ctrl+z)

yup... since my canvas is 2500X3500K pixels i used bursh size 25-50 and paint it strand by strand...then finish it up with burn(blur brush size 10) and dodge(blur brush size 80) for more contrast. (wondering if im doing it right)

face is blur and solid brush all the way with burn and dodge for shading adjustments.. used different layers for eyes, nose, mouth and face so can adjust and detail easily without worries of messing up other parts of the face (call it cheating thumbup.gif )

how you get the hair flow so curvy.. no matter how hard i try, my bamboo just cant register it cry.gif it ends up squarish/scratchy. it really looks out of control. so i resort to chunky with the solid brush first then straight to bristle to hide the edgy look. could it be my settings problem?

btw, saw some of your artwork here. they're awesome thumbup.gif how did you manage overall texture? its as if like its drawn on a cloth canvas. is it done with certain filters or pure brush strokes

hmm smoothing is turn on.. i guess its the resolution and the pressure sensitivity which is half of intuos might be the limitation.. ive tried my best and its just not smooth at all..

@dragonreine i tried using a cosmetic brush i found on deviant art for the powdery skin texture and used them on the face and neck..also applied the noisy overlay method you thought and came up with this unsure.gif ...also used solid brush to put some highlights on the hair

well.. i guess art is not something easily learnt XD.. tho with proper techniques one can be even better.. especially the transition to digital. not everyone knows how to use photoshop straight away. infact i myself only know how to use brush, change brush type, layers and eraser doh.gif thats about it untill i started using burn, dodge and smudge.

man.. after moving back to my rented house and found out there's alot of flaw in my artwork T.T ... monitor calibration is also very important.

lol chill dude, practice makes perfect ^^ altho i am not a digital-art-er, we will jz need more practices to improve ^^
*
you should try digital too smile.gif.. i kena poison by those youtube videos and deviant art and decided to try it myself and get caught up into it. cuz i like painting portraits and i can do it rather cheaply on digital (no need paint, canvas and most importantly odourless and not messy)

tho im a lil frustrated with the precision.. start to feel like its my wacom's fault (its the cheapest bamboo afterall).. must find someone's intuos and give it a try lol.

@dragonreine...great one!.. eventhough its a wip.. its already really awesome.

guess ive got a long way to go :| being too stuck up to follow 100% as the photo reference.. i have to change that habit.
also what i meant earlier was monitor colour calibration.. the one i worked with was somewhat over saturated.. so the shades i applied arent appearing on my current monitor. which is somewhat frustrating that i have to do all over (or i can just use the saturation settings XD)

Added on October 14, 2011, 3:42 amthis shall be my complete work after applying all the advises here notworthy.gif thank you sifus notworthy.gif especially dragonreine

what i did here was throw away the photo ive been referring all this while and do my final personal touch ups

amd apu 380? isnt that for laptops? i know bout llano 3850 tho... yes it has better built in graphic performance as compared to the intel 2500K. however in terms of processing and memory performance, it still quite far behind intel's lead. its better to use a dedicated pci-e GPU as well since there's hardware acceleration in photoshop cs4 onwards
