it's a huge step down lor. 6 years exp you should be already aiming for management-level post on $5k and above imo.
I don't know about that. My company's a stickler for degrees... in that if you don't have a degree, you're a tech/admin no matter what your experience is. That means lower payscale, fewer benefits and absolutely no chance of becoming a manager (pay scale wise), although we have lots of tech/admin people leaders. In fact these guys lead the biggest teams ie. production workers, secretarial pool, CSRs, help desks etc.

I kinda agree with sean here.
Sg focus a lot of the papers before experience.
Not exactly papers before experience lah. If you have a degree but no experience, you still will not become highly paid, nor a manager.

But rather, the belief is that degrees are so common nowadays. If there's a non-degree holder with this experience, there is surely a degree holder with the same experience. Why not simply hire the guy with both?

QUOTE(kinwing @ Aug 26 2011, 12:56 PM)
I can't agree to them, as if I am getting the same pay scale of KL in Sg, I might save less in Sg due to high living standard in Sg, but after currency conversion I still save more (example save SGD1.5K > RM2.5K). Not to mention that Sg might have lower food and transportation cost than KL, so I might be able to save the similar dollar that I can save in KL and this will at least double my saving. As long as I don't own a car (I don't drive in KL either) and have no intention to be permanently settle down in Sg and buy a high-end condo, the so-called high living standard is not a big deal to me.
They forgot about opportunities. When I left KL, I already had nowhere to go ie. there was no finance job in my company in KL with a higher salary level than the one I was at. When I came to our SG office (with promotion some more), I was merely one of the many at this salary level. The biggest finance guy in SG was 6 levels above me. So the opportunities abound.

QUOTE(kinwing)
Then they turn to the topic that Singaporeans are kiasu so working environment will be daunting. Fair enough, it is working life and every work got its nature of pressure. It is not different from what I am doing in an IB at KL now, I worked more than 16 hours everyday (24/7) for few weeks just to catch the deadline for the submission of an IPO project, and words from bosses will be hard to swallow if works not up to their requirements. Getting double pay with the same pressure, good cool2.gif ? Indeed, I could have more fincial job related exposure in Sg for my future career advancement.
It's the same. You earn this money, you give back this amount of work.

QUOTE(kinwing)
Then we also discussed about the distance from hometown. For me it is also no difference if I work in KL or Sg since I am from Ipoh. Maybe Sg is a little further south than KL, if take bus will take another 3 hours longer only, or I should just take budget flight then. Anyway, I have asked my friend to arrange a meeting with his friend who is now working in UOB out to yamcha on this Sunday (he back to KL for long puasa holiday), hope can find out more from him and pass him my CV.
I take Firefly back to Ipoh once or twice each month. I leave office for the airport at 1pm for the 2:50pm flight and am sucking down an iced white coffee at Sin Hing Loong in old town by 5:00pm.

May I know how much the flight cost you each trip? If below RM200 should be fine. Btw, I thought white coffee of Nam Heong taste better laugh.gif ? It some more list its "Old Town" recently.
When it started a couple of years ago, it was about RM380 return. When it became daily flights, it went up to RM440 or so. Now after becoming 2 flights per day, it's RM500-550. I usually book about 3-6 weeks in advance. I have paid RM800 for CNY flight.

QUOTE(Mackiddo @ Aug 27 2011, 03:26 PM)
mine quite simple actually. I saw job opening from the New Straits Times, send resume, they come to KL interview a few of us. They then get an agent to look for HDB apartment for us who are successful in the interview. we move to Sg a couple of weeks later, our maiden trip there is fully reimbursed, either you take flight, bus or train, they pay us back in full. Then do our medical there, get approval-in-principal letter and start work. I guess Sg companies no longer do that, do they?
Depends on the company. MNCs will do that depending on the candidates/urgency etc. Local companies will rarely do it, unless it's a pretty high level position that needs to be filled urgently.

We recently hired a tech service guy from East Malaysia... more than matched his salary in S$1 vs RM1; paid flight, hotel, expenses for a househunting trip to SG; then paid for the flight, expenses to officially move him and his stuff to SG; then put him up in Mandarin Orchard for a month while he finalised his accomodation. Even gave him 2 months signing bonus to help him set up in SG (to pay rental deposit, phone deposit, open bank account, buy white goods etc). But then, we specifically wanted someone who can service our customers in Indonesia, but who is either local Singaporean or Malaysian... not an Indonesian.

What exactly should we ask for in BM?

Encik, saya perul satu slip Catatan lesen trafik saya.
So, it's called "slip catatan lesen trafik"? I had asked for a "surat" to give to Sg traffic police to get Sg licence. And they came back (both times) saying that they needed to blacklist my licence.

I would say that 90% of the people who migrated from M'sia are mainly "forced" to do so due to the "lack of rights and opportunities." as citizens. But that's not to say that you should not be doing anything other than watching and moaning what happens in Malaysia. We should all excercise our rights as citizens at the voting post.

GE is around the conner. Do the right thing and excercise your right as  a citizen. Register to vote and vote for a better Malaysia. I've done it, have you?
I'm from Ipoh. I have voted in Ipoh Timur in every election since I came of age. My Ipohite compatriots and I have sacrificed everything from a decent tertiary education facility / university (TARC went to Kampar, held by BN, which had no facilities and no talent pool) to a working public transport system to regular trash collection. We've been practically decimated to a community of pensioners and retirees. Where young Ipohites are like Filipino maids and Indonesian workers... forced to journey afar in order to continue studying after SPM and thereafter make a living. Why? To put critical opposition members of parliament into office and send a clear statement to UMNO that the Chinese will bow to nobody. Besides taking a day off every 4 years to go back to vote, what have you done in comparison?

indonesian oso can vote via their embassy...
Pretty simple to do postal votes. But there's a very significant population of Malaysians living overseas, who 100% will not vote for the govt. In addition, many of them will vote in constituencies where BN is the weakest... ie. areas with high % of Chinese votes. So, absolutely no incentive for BN to have postal votes for the public.

As for overseas/pendalaman armed forces, civil servants and their families postal votes... most of the eligible voters in this category don't even see their voting slips. It's filled in, submitted on their behalf and sent to any constituency where BN needs more votes to tilt the count to their side.

i really miss eating good sushis in japan
sigh
You can get pretty good airflown sushi in SG, places like Kuriya for instance. But it's going to be expensive.

For ramen on the other hand, somehow it doesn't translate as well overseas. The anywhere, off-the-street, no pre-planning ramen I had in Japan beats the expensive ramen at Ippudo in Mandarin Gallery.

Should i get the HTC Evo 3D in Comex or should I get it in Malaysia?
How much is it at Comex?

Malaysia is always cheaper off the shelf without plan, if you don't have a special deal/price in SG. I bought my SGSII in Ipoh for RM2099 when it was launched. SG was selling it for S$998.

QUOTE(Jurlique)
I wonder given HTC Evo 3D vs SGS2, which phone u guys prefer?
Dunno... I'm used to Samsung's implementation of Android. I haven't seen the Evo 3D's screen, but the SGSII's Super Amoled Plus is pretty hard to beat. My iphone fanboy colleagues turn their iP4s face down at the lunch table. iP3s get put back into their pockets.

s2 seems cool... although a little toyish due to the use of plastic for its enclosure..
It's super light though... very easy in the pocket despite the huge screen.

QUOTE(alaskanbunny)
was told it hangs at times as well... hmmm
With Android, it's typically an issue with the app rather than the firmware or hardware.

Is Kuriya located in Raffles CIty?
They have a few outlets. My colleagues usually go to the one at Great World City or Orchard Central.

Kuriya's Webpage

QUOTE(Aloong)
Btw, I did a search, there's one Kuriya at Bangsar Shopping Centre (KL). Is it the same one?
No idea.

This isn't sushi... but is what we never fail to order each time. Kinki or Japanese Rockfish. This kind of stuff I only eat if Ah Kung's paying.

QUOTE(Jurlique @ Sep 3 2011, 10:16 PM)
I have seen the screen display quality for EVO at COMEX, it is very good and bright enough due to using qHD technology vs super AMOLED + from Samsung, but i tend to lean to HTC more due to its HTC Sense offering.

and HTC also have larger resolution compare to the SGS2. But no doubt, both phones are high tech phones rite now in the market.
Compare the screens side by side, if possible using the same media. Brightness is useful under the sun, but you'll almost never use it indoors as the battery life is atrocious. I go more for clarity and how pleasing it is to the eye. Google yielded: E!Gadget and Super Amoled Plus vs qHD.

In any case, you sound partial to the HTC. So get it lor, cause apart from the hardware, it's also the user experience. Let me know how you like it... my Starhub contract is due for renewal by the end of this year. I'm itching to know how 3D photos taken by twin cameras turn out.

Wah, why so cheap wan? izit an AP set? I think it is warrantied by local shop instead of Samsung or HTC itself.
The FAQ says it's a local warranty. But to be a locally warrantied set, it has to be obtained from Samsung Singapore. However, there's no logic why Samsung would give a much lower cost price to them, competing with the 3 telcos and their own exclusive dealers. Reading their trade in policy where they pay more for trade in sets which are still within the warranty period... my guess is that they refurbish trade in sets that are <1 year old and buy a warranty extension up to 1 year from Samsung when they sell it.

For both my Galaxy Tab (from Samsung Vivo) and SII (from Samsung Ipoh), there was no warranty card, but an instruction card to sms or email Samsung to receive a sms warranty confirmation on the imei.

QUOTE(Dark NT @ Sep 5 2011, 09:56 AM)
I am really open to any mode of transportation. But preferbly something that can bring me directly to the office. (not like bus>MRT>bus..)
*
If you're the sweaty type and you don't like it... go with taxi or car. The only exception is if there's a bus route that takes you door to door, and the bus stops are very, very near your flat and workplace. Even then, it could be a loooong trip. For instance the bus from my block in AMK to Heeren at Orchard Road fits the exception perfectly, but it's a 55 minute journey with 30 stops. So I take it very, very rarely... for eg. when I have some thinking to do and in a bus is as good a place as any.

But if you don't mind public transport, then simply buy a city map + bus guide, check which buses go to your workplace or nearest MRT (plus feeder bus) and then work your way out from there. I would choose a place that's along the required bus/mrt route (less than 20 minutes travel time - 10 bus stops or 10 MRT stations) and preferably with a nearby shopping center / supermarket / HDB hub (within 5 bus stops).
