QUOTE(Kitsune_Yuiyean @ Nov 5 2012, 03:19 AM)
Does anyone know how to take care of  a hamster infected with skin fungal?

I went to the vet and she's on antibiotics now. I change her bedding regularly too.

Anyone know how I can use povidone-iodine to clean her skin? Must it be washed after putting it on or can I leave it on my hamster?

And how on earth do I cut her fur? I can't make her sit at one place and shes getting annoyed with my constant handling. When the vet tried to do it, her eyes almost popped out from being squeezed.

Thanks!

Thanks kitsune.. i managed to find it at PLC @ Bangsar shopping center after i have called all the pets shop at KL. Yesterday managed to grab straight 2 bottles of it rclxms.gif

Anyway hope any expert here can advice me on this :-

QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 7 2012, 03:57 PM)
nah, i not expert .. i just read from those ppl who are really passionate about hamsters. those people actually research a lot. this is what i got from the experts :-

Vitakraft Menu Hamster

Guaranteed Analysis:
Crude Protein (min) 13%
Crude Fat (min) 4%
Crude Fibre (max) 12%

Starting off by looking at the guaranteed analysis we can see that this mix is not good to start with due to the low protein percentage. Then looking to the ingredients we see that there are various ingredients that are not suitable for diabetic hamsters (the corns, carrots and peas). So this mix is not recommended for any species of hamster.

but here in malaysia we have so little food choice, i know we can't follow exactly 100% on research.  cry.gif

But he been fine except for the fatty lump but its under control now.. didnt become bigger nor smaller now.. i been watching his diet lately. Hopefully his fatty lump will become smaller. And, starrynight would be very much appreciate if you could help me ask them as well lately my hammie been develope a lump look kinda like this

user posted image

When i slightly press it. It feel like watery soft lump. My hammie doesnt show any pain or struggles when i touch his lump. It been nearly 1-2 weeks now. He been acting complete normal with his normal routine. No sign of any illness or abnormal. The lump doesnt seem to bother him at all. Been google about it & seem like a fatty lump to me that my hammie are having but i really not sure. Now i been watching his diet.. not too much treat & sunflower seed for him. His lump are under control. No sign of getting bigger nor smaller. Thank you smile.gif

Hi there, is the lump extremely soft? My robo has that too for months I guess. I didn't bother cuz it didn't disturb him nor does it look/feel harmful. Plus, he's one obese hamster so I somehow resort to the thought of the lump being extra fats hahaha.
*
Hi jeremy, Yes it's exactly like what you have said. The lump is extremely soft like liquid watery feel. It doesnt bother him at all & continue with his daily rountine. My hammie was one of a obese hammie too so i google about it & i assume it was a fatty lump. So now i been watching his diet very carefully.. Not too much sunflower seeds & treat for him & the lump are under control too. Havent got bigger nor smaller.

QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 7 2012, 11:30 PM)
Not sure they have that brand on list but you can check here. http://hamsterhideout.com/forum/index.php?...opic=71864&st=0

I personally cannot find anything good enough in our stores so I usually pick through his food to get rid of sunflower seed, corn and fruits which are supposed to be given sparingly and not as staple food as they are fattening and sweet especially for dwarves.

one question I'd ask is if there are other hamsters in the same room
as this hamster? meticulous grooming can happen when hamsters
smell or sense another of the opposite sex... it triggers their "mating"
rituals!

there are other skin issues such as allergies, parasites and as you
know, the fungal diseases, that can cause irritated skin. has this
person checked the hamster's skin under the fur to see if there are
raw areas, flakiness or visible parasites?

what kind of bedding are they using?

note : pine and cedar beddings are very dangerous and should not be used as this can cause skin irritation and respiratory problems.

and the other lump scenario :-

the most important thing is the speed at which this lump is growing.
if it's growing fairly quickly, like visibly growing over the course of
the past couple of weeks, a vet needs to be involved now to remove
it. otherwise, it will continue to grow and, depending on its location,
interfere with internal organs.
*
Hi starrynight.. Actually his elder brother are just living beside him. My hammie was a male too. Previous brought another male thought to accompany my hammie but then they fight so i have separated them & put them in a separated cage so basically there are just living to beside each other side only. Currently i didn't use any bedding but i got put some shredded tissue for them. Tissue is it okay for them? Previous i have use vitakraft bedding for small animal but lately been out of stock so i'm waiting for the stock to arrive but actually i'm thinking of switching his bedding to wood pallet. Wondering will be better than woodflake bedding?

Vitakraft bedding (Previous Use) :-

Wood Pallet Bedding (Thought of changing) :-

I notice vitakraft bedding are too rough might afraid my hammie will not comfortable. It's kinda hard to find a good bedding at kl here. Too less choices =(

Bout the lump:-

It's like visibly growing over the course of the past couple of weeks & then when we notice about it we quickly google it to find out. Now we been watching over his diet. Previously give him too much treat & sunflower seeds so now we have reduce it & the lump havent gotten bigger too. When we slightly press it to examine he doesnt show any pain nor discomfort or pain. Beside the lump are soft & covered in furs. No red vessels or pink in colors.

Thanks alot starrynight. You really provide more usefull information than i can search at google. My hammie & i are so thankful. Thank you so so much nod.gif

i exchanged the vitakraft guinea pig to hamster food.there is no other choice at the shop. the owner gv me the one she said sold the most - Marukan brand. so i took it, 450g for rm20. wow a bit expensive but we knw marukan is frm japan rite. is it gud? the aroma nice n my hamster likes it. starrynight, is it ok for the hamster?
*
Hi tjaime, marukan is from japan but watch out for the sugar content (especially if your hamster are dwarf hamster). I once buy a biscuit treat from marukan. Smell so nice & my hammie love it but the few minutes of putting the biscuits into their plate, ants are marching into my hammie cage surrounding the biscuits. Seeing it can roughly know how sweet its the biscuits was so i quickly remove it & never give my hammie eat anymore.

QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 8 2012, 10:16 AM)
Hi babybb,

I would suggest changing his bedding to paper based bedding. Since that vitakraft bedding is in german, not sure about the wood they use so better stay away. Pine and cedar are harmful and since we don't have aspen here, that I know of - best to get paper based bedding.

I've been using Homefriends and Ultrapet both bought from PLC. I'm not sure whether it's the best brand in the market here but it should be much safer than wood shavings. The bedding might have something to do with it. Yes, it cost more too but for the sake of his health, I think die die also take out money to buy.

Tissue paper as temporary is fine but check regularly as they could get moldy when wet - pee, water etc. Unscented and uncolored tissue ya. I'll get back to you on the lump
*
Homefriends & Ultrapet.. okay got it. I think i'll switch whatever is good. Like you said it's for their health i dont mind fork out extra money as well. They are my baby smile.gif

Thanks starrynight, I'll take note of that. I always change their tissue whenever i see it's dirty. Normally 1-2days i'll change it & i used unscented and uncolored tissue too. Just the normal type of soft tissue is being used laugh.gif

wow .. ants ah? scary nye.

homefriends i think about RM 38 and ultrapet RM 41. I do a mix of both but homefriends more la. Cheaper ma tongue.gif

you can also give them toilet tissue to nest. my silly hammie used it to make a nest for himself and sleep inside it. when you try to find him, he's somewhere inside. you can also give the toilet roll (the core of the tissue after the tissue is used) for them to play and chew. it's safe. highly unlikely they will eat it though - if they do, remove it but paper not too bad as it's digestable.

another thing to note, not sure if it's sold here but DO NOT use COTTON bedding. It could get tangled in their limbs ( cut circulation of blood, break their legs etc) and if swallowed, it could cause lots of problem. Read once someone's experience, the hamster constipated - few days no poo, bring to vet , try to flush out .. a long string of cotton came out .. the poor hammie swallowed the cotton .. luckily he's ok de. so please stay away from cotton bedding as well.
*
Yups it's ants & i darn hate ants cause its attack my hammie. Even i didnt put any treat still will come 1-2 ants. So disturbing & i hate it very much. Then i take my hammie cage to clean it very very extra clean & switch place still the ants come also. Arghhh.. mad.gif

Toilet roll.. Yea y i wouldnt think of it. Thanks for sharing.. rclxms.gif

anyone can tell me wic brand less sugar? wic brand high protein? i reli headache on choosing food.
*
Hi tjaime, may i know what type of hamster you are having? I'm currently feeding my hammie vitakraft menu which are sugar-free recipe. This is the only brand so far i know that is sugar-free. Beside you might wanna add some oat flakes into their foods mix to give them a better digestion. I kinda admits it's very very hard to find a good quality of hamster foods at malaysia especially on vitakraft brand. Too less pets shop are carrying this brand. Even singapore have better choice than us.

Since your location at kuantan why not search some online pet shop to have it deliver to your doorstep?

http://petshack.com.my/

http://www.chubbypetsgarden.com/

http://www.facebook.com/petzone2u

Those are the online shop so far i have know. Have a look =)

Just wondering how the homefriend bedding look like? Is it this 1?

This is made of recycled paper I think. newspaper and magazine. I'm currently using it. I gotta say this is amazing, no odour, it's very clean for them and usually after a few hours it's not really dusty. However, when you put in new bedding, basically the thing is a dust-bomb.  sad.gif

I tried wood pellet too. It's good too, but I feel that hamsters loooove to dig, and with those pellets they cannot really dig. So yeah, i guess I'll stick with the recycled paper until a better one comes by? :/

p.s: You can check page 54, the photo I posted of my hamster, you can see the bedding how it looks like.
*
Thanks alot jeremy for sharing. If that case i might head to PLC to have a look when i got free time might change to this as well. Now my hammie cage doesnt have bedding at all just shredded soft tissue paper which they very like to make as a nest & slept on it. Last time use vitakraft bedding but they always kick the bedding to another side & slept on the places that doesnt have bedding. I guess the bedding too rough so they doesnt like it.

Ya btw jeremy regard your hammie lump is it covered by furs also? doesnt it get any bigger nor smaller?

QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 9 2012, 09:20 AM)
Babybb, I'm not sure about testing for diabetes though. Try googling and I'll see what I can find out too.

I use homefriends since the beginning and yes, it's a little dusty. However I think my hammie like to mark his smell - busuk. Not pee smell, his smell.

Food wise, I'm even considering to ship in from spore - harry hamster but for now, I'm feeding him Bonanza Hartz - take out the corn, sunflower seed, fruit pieces .. left oni seeds ..

My hamster has a habit of eating only half of the seed, the other half keep later to throw at me or throw away
*
Thanks starrynight, i'm googling it too. Hopefully its not diabetes =(

Yes, i'm considering about that too. Even singapore have better range than us. I have sent some enquiry on the shipping info cause i needed to buy sum treats & foods which couldnt be find at here but they never bother to reply me also. My hammie are the most picky 1. He doesnt really like to eat the alfafa pallet & also green green color thingy.. everytime it get me throw alot of it. rclxub.gif

Yes, that is homefriend. I use it since i have hamster and i juz brought another 3 bags coz promo going to end 31 dec. So far i use it very good, no odour and clean.it is made of recycled paper. So very environment free.
*
Thanks tjaime, i'm considering to change my bedding to homefriend too since so many good review that i got here. Gotta get the best for my hammie. Yea.. here msia really not many choice for hammie tho sad.gif

http://www.kohepets.com/product-all.php?cid=7&scid=63

This pets shop at spore offer wide variety hammie products & brand. I have decided to buy some stuffs that couldnt be find at KL here. I have sent enquiry to them but they never bother to reply also rclxub.gif

Hey no problem.
As for them kicking the bedding aside, I'm not too sure. I guess they like sleeping on the plastic surface? Cuz sometimes it's cold, probably they like it tongue.gif
My 2 winters don't do that, but my 2 Robos they kick the bedding until half the cage (where the house is) is full of bedding and the other half has no bedding haha.
My hammy lump has very little fur. I think it got smaller after he was terribly attacked by my winter. I assume it's fats la because after the incident, he became a lot "slimmer", so the lump also became smaller.
*
I see.. hopefully my hammie lump are fatty lump also. Haha.. yea mine too. My robo hammie like to kick all the bedding to 1 side & sleep only which doesnt have bedding. As for the homefriend bedding i wonder how big is the pack is? Is it much? How long can it be use? =)

The pack is huge actually, and inside there's 10L of bedding. It all depends on your cage size and whether your hamster pee and poop a lot or not.
All my cages are the fish tank kind, and I'm currently using a small, medium, and large (2ft x 1ft) tank.
With the 10L I changed the small one twice, the medium one once, and the large one twice. I don't change very often too because it doesn't look dirty nor smell bad, so I'd say about 2 weeks?
Currently I think it's at RM36.90, not sure when promotion will end.

Thank you jeremy.. i'm gonna go to PLC later on to buy it.. my hammie will gonna have a nice & good bedding soon =)

Yeah it's pretty dusty when you first put it in.
What you can do is shake shake the cage like ummmm ... you know like how those "pro uncles" use big wok to cook char quey tiao? When they take up the wok and start pushing it back and forth to stir the quey tiao vigorously. Did you get what I mean? Hahahaha laugh.gif
After that it'll be fine already, but of course you may have a different judgement.
*
Hahahahha.. i started to get the image in my brain already. I think i knew what you mean biggrin.gif

At 1st i was so worried i got the wrong one cos i saw it was quite dusty & my hammie will not like it as he was kept grooming himself minutes after i put the bedding, but i guess it's normal cause he been grooming quite alot lately. It's kinda weird actually.. he never been grooming such frequently at previous. Now it like groom eat, groom sleep.. wake up groom again & it like takes 10 min long. Any hammie owner experience the same situation as mine? unsure.gif

Will do what according you teach me when i change their bedding the 2nd time. Thanks alot ya tongue.gif

Wow 2 years. My hamsters never reached that age before (due to many tragic reasons, and I also suspect it's the wood shaving bedding) sad.gif
Once I changed to the Ultra-fresh bedding, the white fluffy recycled paper, they kept scratching and stuff like that, apparently they got used to it soon after that.
So yeah, probably just wait a little while more and enjoy tomorrow's celebration first! smile.gif

Yea my hammie too.. He kept grooming himself & a little bit of scratching lately so i thought it was normal until i saw the bald patches sad.gif

I guess he was old so all the health issue problem come out. Really hate to see my hammie unwell cry.gif

Anyways thanks jeremy. I think i will stick back to vitakraft bedding & see how is the result after that.

Thanks starrynight for all the useful information. My hammie bald patches are not big kinda small with black spot on it. It occurs since i changed to his new bedding "Homefriend" bedding within 1 week. Now i have cleaned his cage & put nothing but only soft tissue for him. Hopefully condition will be better without any bedding. I might afraid he allergy with his new bedding.

Seriously my hammie already 2 years old by tomolo. I know he left not much time although i'm kinda selfish to wish my hammie to have a longer life to accompany me. He been part my my life, part of my family. I really cant imagine how it feel when someone i really care & love are leaving me soon. I know his condition better than anyone else. He appeared become thinner since last week i saw him. He such a fighter & i know he always wanna be there for me. When i'm sad, when i'm cry, he always there for me. When i held him up & talk with him, he would stare & listen patiently. He would stare at me & sit quietly in my hand when i'm sad & cry. It's like he knew i was unhappy & he really there to cheer me up.

I love him more than i love myself. I provide him only the best & i dont mind travel few hours just to get it. I dont want him to suffer, i dont want him to get any sick. I want him to be a healthy little fella when i brought him home that moment. cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif

I totally understand what you mean. My ham is about 7 or 8 months old, if I'm not mistaken. Sometimes I wish I could turn back time and look at the little ham that I brought home. Whom I took  time to tame.

Sadly we can't fight against nature so the best we can did is ensure they have a loved life. My little ham too is always clutched in my hand and lets me stroke him to sleep. I also believe there's something so pure and innocent bout the way a ham eats. Really innocent.

Sometimes I do wonder if I'm such a hands on owner, spoiling him .. I think when I'm a mother, the baby will never be out of my sight lol.

Anyways the best compliments I got after I showed photos and tell stories about my hamster, 3 different friends told me they want to become my hamster and if they are hamsters, they want to follow me home.

For the sake of my little rodent, I research and read a lot from forum before and after I got him. Just to give him the best I could.

Happy birthday to your ham ham. Wish I knew when my ham was born XD

He just get few extra sunflower seeds as his bday treat as we are monitoring his diet cant let him hv more that's why he been losing weight but i think it's because of his old aging too. The biggest present for my hammie was our love toward him. Hope he feel it. biggrin.gif

Wah so "grand" your celebration haha.
I celebrated one of my past hamster's bday by making her a cake with bread, vege, cheese and jacobs biscuit hahaha. She took only a small portion ><
