QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 21 2012, 06:17 PM) I have came across a spore hamster forum & it stated by the forumer that they fed their hammie flaxseed for the extra nutrition & omega-3 that help with the fur loss. I dont know about that but i have search for few days & its safe to consume by hamster & it's very healthy too. Just dont over fed them. Lately my hammie been losing some furs & there a bald patch too. He been grooming and scratching alot lately which i suspect was mites but then i check there are no mites jumping around at my hammie body. Or he just enjoy the scratching? I really have no ideal. Sometime really wish my hammie could talk to me so that i know what's wrong with him If there really mites, would it be ok if i apply this? ![]() This post has been edited by babybb: Nov 22 2012, 01:13 AM |

QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 22 2012, 07:34 AM) Personally I wouldn't use any product on my hamster without professional consultation. Dunno what kind of chemical is in the bottle. I was thinking the same way too. How if my hammie lick it? Anyway i'm planning to bring my hammie to vet. Will he be stress out? Roughly how much a trip to vet? I never been to vet before & this is the 1st time i owe a pet & a hamster Seeing my hammie suffer it's not a good things. He been scratching always & seeing him my heart pain |

QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 22 2012, 10:44 AM) i'm not quite sure about vet trips though. i think better bring him along in his cage and give him treats to let him know he's okay. Thanks starrynight. Beside mind to share what brand of hamster mix that you feeding him right now? At the moment i was feeding vitakraft menu. He been having that since he was a baby i might afraid if i suddenly change, he might not get used to it.some mites might be naked to the eyes so cannot totally rule out possibility of mites. my hamster also lost fur - almost bald near his "elbow" but after switching food, his fur grew back. the RM 10 delikate mix is not good for him. i'll post a few photos of my hamster and set up soon. Actually i been checking him. There are no sign of mites (tink black speck). But his been scratching & scratching & shake his furs (Like when a dog shake his fur after bath) that kind. Then he was like scratching & only stop when he sleep. This post has been edited by babybb: Nov 22 2012, 11:17 AM |

QUOTE(Kitsune_Yuiyean @ Nov 22 2012, 04:45 PM) If there's no mites, I certainly hope there's no fungas....black spots. Just make sure the cage is not damp or dusty in any way. I'm not sure bout the mites. I just google about it & some said it look like tiny black specks around their furs but as far as i know i been checking on my hammie & if not mistaken no sign of mites. Kitsune, mind telling me how a fungus look like? I just know my hammie been scratching more tha usual & there a bald patch with some furr loss. There a spot where i see abit of white flakes sticking at his furs. It's dry and flaky. I've taken two hamsters to vet before. Mine are syrians so they're easier to handle. I place my hammy in a shoe box (my hammy was quite active) or in a small cage (this one was in critical situation). Both did get quite stressed at first but I let them smell my hands and stroked them so they knew I was next to them. Make sure your vet is the type that knows how to handle hamsters. Putting pressure to check them seems kinda scary as one of my hammy eyes were about to pop out from trying to get away. A trip to the vet will probably cost around RM20 (check up only), and RM40 for med like antibiotic. I was lucky my vet was a hamster keeper before so she consulted me on the extra care. If you're interested, the clinic I went to was in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Damansara. The vet was Melissa. Glad that you meet a very nice vet. TTDI seem a little bit far. Mine nearest location would be genting klang. I have though of changing the cage. Currently i'm using cardboard box as their cage & its been a period of time i have not change it. I think probably its this reason. I might will buy plastic storage box like starrynight as their cage. I hope its just allergies. Anyway kitsune i got 2 robo hamster who seem to have the same problem also. Will the vet double charge me on the consultation fees if i bring 2 as well? QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 22 2012, 05:17 PM) I'm feeding him Bonanza Hartz but I remove everything that is not good for a dwarf hammie. He get those as treats only, not staple food. Yea been thinking of change your type of cage. As you said easy to clean. Might possible also.. all the well just change bedding & also the magazine which i used it to cover the bottom. Previous use newspaper but search abt it & its not good as newapaper inks are toxin to hammie so change to magazine which cleaner. The cardboard box been 1yr plus havent been change. Might already dusty just i dont know only. Added on November 22, 2012, 5:21 pm oh yey .. ur buying a storage box as well? i find that works best as a hamster cage. easy to clean also. Is there a possibility that they're in a cardboard box and then they sleep on where they pee thus the scratching? Maybe give it a change and see. |

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Thanks for sharing Kitsune. I dont think it's fungus as my hammie doesnt look that serious. He just have the bald patch that's all. Hopefully it's not mites & it's just an allergies. I'll try to change his diet & cage for 1 week if the scratching still have then i might bring them to vet. Cute fella you have there but glad that your hammie are recovering. He seem so lazy & relaxing.. LOL |

He still ask me to see it myself thru the microscope there was a thingy with hands & legs. The vet told me it's quite a stubborn mites. Gosh.. but hamtari was a strong little fella. He was so quiet in all the process. He didn't struggles or running around. Just quietly when the vet are taking his fur & skin sample for test. I'm so proud of him!!! The doctor have give me a drug which i think was an antibiotic to be fed every 3days (1 week twice) oral with syringe.
Did anyone be kind to advice me how could i fed the medicine to my hammie with syringe? He was an active fella who cant sit still even for a second.. I might afraid he doesnt wanna drink it Pray hard for my hammie speedy recover =) This post has been edited by babybb: Nov 25 2012, 12:02 AM |

QUOTE(Kitsune_Yuiyean @ Nov 25 2012, 01:32 AM) That's good news now that we know what causes the skin condition. Thanks for the video Kitsune. Hope my hammy willing to drink the med without any any trouble. He was a robo so catching him really hard as his small body look so fragile I had to feed my hammy antibiotic everyday using a syringe too. Again, my hammy is a Syrian so she was large enough for me to hold comfortably. What I did was simply to cup her in my palm facing me, hold back her paws using my thumb and pinky, and push the point at the side of her mouth (front got her two teeth, ma). I had to be very careful as the whole syringe contained med for one whole week, so I marked it with marker. I did it in one go and she was nice enough to swallow it like water. YT video to help you out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cF52AFtVVg (My style, gentler) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGLrSuMc2q8 (for active ones) Good luck! Anyways do my hammie will experience drowsiness after consume the med? Do i have to change his diet while he on med period? QUOTE(jeremysoon93 @ Nov 25 2012, 11:55 AM) As for my past experience, the meds I got was sweet, so my hammie voluntarily drinks it haha. Haha.. lucky for you. Now me & my bf still headache dont know how to feed our hammie. He so small & seem so fragile. See his mood actually. Sometime he will good enuf to let us catch sometime when we catch him he try his best to let off Wish your hammie a fast recovery Thanks jeremy for your wishes This post has been edited by babybb: Nov 26 2012, 09:19 AM |

QUOTE(Kitsune_Yuiyean @ Nov 26 2012, 11:17 PM) Just an idea, why not drip on your hammy's fav food? It's gotta be small and something it'll gobble up immediately. My Pearl Dwarf has a good habit of finishing everything I hand to him on the spot, for example, soft bread. Thanks Kitsune for the idea! but after tons & tons of youtube & google finally we have success feeding our hammie his first med! Oh well surpising he just diam diam drink it.. doesnt struggles or anything. After that continue with his daily routine but didn't show any sign of drowsiness. We just worry his fatty lump only. Seem like a little bit just a tiny little bit bigger. But now been controlling his diet. No too much of treats..sunflower seeds & flax seeds. He been chubby a bit lately too. Stupid me shud have ask the vet as well regard the lump but that time i was so nervous til i have forget everything!!!Yea, Robo is a bit more tricky and bitey. I didn't change my hamster diet much. Didn't your vet tells you what you can do to help them? I did however try to feed my hammy nutritious food that might speed up her health ie yogurt ice-cream Not sure if it will induce drowsiness but then again, I fed my hammy sometime during her sleep time so she just went back and chilled like normal. Hmmm the vet was good, friendly & kind actually. He have explained to us very detail about my hammie skin condition. Because we seem quite blur & he was very kind to explain how the med works on our hammie body but he didnt mention of diet & i was so nervous i have forget to ask but i think nothing to have change if not he would have just tell me. Hopefully my hammie will be no itchy anymore & continue with his lazy routine. Hamtari wish you have a speedy recovery!!! QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 27 2012, 07:46 AM) Thank you kitsune. It's not for me, it's for someone else. Hi starrynight, we went to Klinik Haiwan Genting Klang. It's the nearest of my bf location. I didnt want to stress my hammie more so we took him to the nearest vet which are just walking distance. Thank god there are vet clinic which treat exotic animals at his area. The vet doctor was quite good, friendly & kind. He very gentle with our hammie which doesnt cause discomfort to our hammie & explained to us very detail.Btw, anyone know of a good hamster vet in Selangor area - just in case. Good as in they know what they're talking about and be able to care for the hamster. Babybb, which vet you went ? DR. QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 27 2012, 01:22 PM) hmm not really but he's been scratching a lot. no external wound or what so ever though. just to be cautious and to have an emergency number standby. I'm not sure scratching is his hobby or what but he scratches a lot - at least I feel it's a lot. Is he like keep on scratching & scratching whenever he is awake? & also do you notice any fur loss? Does he shake his fur? (Just like dog shake their fur after bath). Any sign of mites? Gosh i hope your hammy is fine. I know the feeling when our hammy are sick or not feeling well If you notice any fur loss or bald spot with white flasky thingy then you have to take your hammy to vet a.s.a.p beside you might wanna clean your hammy cage & his toy with hot water. I now clean my hammy toys with hot water & leave it for 30 min once a week to maintain its cleanliness & since their cage change to plastic storage type it make cleaning more easier This post has been edited by babybb: Nov 27 2012, 01:40 PM |

QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 27 2012, 02:42 PM) Yeah he scratch a lot but no fur loss or bald patch. I just don't like to see him scratch sometimes until the eyes looked like wanna pop out. Sometime when i clean their cage that time my bf will play with them or just let him walk around at the room but if he sleeping then i will clean their playground there 1st which is in another cage just beside it only. Try not to wake him up so that during the 15-30min he still sleeping doesnt realize anything. How you clean with hot water ? Mind giving me details ? Where does your hamster go for 30 mins. Those plastic toys, porcelain house or hideout need to be soak at the hot water for about 15-30min but i think 15min will do. Pour HOT and quater of cold water into a pail & put everything inside soak it for 15min. Wipe it with clean dry towel & you will notice how clean it is after that. The cage need to be clean as well but no nid hot water. Just clean it with water and clean sponge will do. But i think you really need to bring him to vet. At 1st hamtari was like your hammy too. He kept on scratching non stop whenever he was awake but then i mistaken he was grooming but then i start to realized some bald spot & furr loss. Again i assume he was experience that because he was old but then the scratching is getting annoying to my hammie & from there i sense sum thing was wrong & finally i bring him to vet. Edi ate his first med now have to wait til fri only can feed again. Hope your hammie is fine =) This post has been edited by babybb: Nov 27 2012, 03:17 PM |

QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 27 2012, 04:21 PM) thanks for the advice. I thought of the vet but wanna clean up his stuff first. maybe they are dirty thus causing the itching. I always use wet cloth nia. I also suspect the bedding - dunno dusty or (paranoid a bit!) got mites in between kah .. or something .. U're welcome =) Bout the bedding if you are worries you can temporary take out the bedding & put only tissue paper for 1 week to see how is the sctraching. At the moment i didnt put any bedding to hamtari. Just alot of tissue paper & change it when i see its dirty or damp. When i bring hamtari to vet i take all the bedding sample to show him. He said recent i brought that bedding are kinda dusty so better not. So i got 1 whole pack wasted but it's for hamtari health so i wouldnt mind =)I'll go get clean cheap towel to dry up his stuff after this .. don't want to mix with other wipe dirty cloth de. Next week thurs/ fri night only his clean cage routine. do update us on hamtari. Do update us on your hammie too ya. |

QUOTE(jeremysoon93 @ Nov 30 2012, 01:47 AM) Hey guys, I'm kinda in an emergency now. My friend's going to Sabah for some study-related stuff so he asked me to take care of his winter pearl (permanently). The thing is, he gave it to me in a cage with a bowl full of worms which I immediately threw when I went home. My friend said the hammy's diet is the Vitakraft one, exactly what I'm giving my kids too. Omg. Is he alright now? How old is he? I think might probably stress because sudden change in new environment. Try not too disturb him for awhile but at the same time more observe him. If he still doesnt want to eat anything might sick already then you might need to get the little guy to vet a.s.a.pI just don't know why this little guy's not eating anything! He took a few bites of a vege leaf I found in the refrigerator, tried giving him sugar water but he didn't want, and he took a few licks of yoghurt. What can I do besides the vet visit? >< He looks like he's about to go very soon. :/ I wish he was alright by now. Anyways guys need to found out normally hammie in medicine will take how long to be actually see the recover? Not sure that i over-worried or what. I have see no improvement on my hammie skin after 1st medication & today will be his 2nd medication. Yesterday seem like normal he been sctraching non stop. Am i over worried? QUOTE(CleoLeon @ Nov 30 2012, 03:28 PM) Hey guys, I have a big ant problem regarding my hamster. Hi, may i know what type its your hammie is? & do you feed him any sugary treat? Notice the ants are normally on which spot? If you have given ur hammie any sugary treat remove it when your hammie are not eat it. The sugary treat will attract ants. I having the same problem as you too & it's damn annoying. I have stopped feeding my hammie treat & the ants have stopped too.I've always put my hamster cage on a tray and fill the tray with water so there is no way ants could've reached the cage. ..Unless ants know how to swim. So recently, I've been finding a couple of ants in the cage, around 5 or 6 ants every time I inspect and I keep on changing the bedding and cleaning the cage until I've almost used up the whole column of bedding in 2 weeks. I need serious help here ): |

QUOTE(CleoLeon @ Nov 30 2012, 03:40 PM) My hamster's a dwarf. Not sure what kind of dwarf though. And I rarely feed her sugary treats. The ants are normally found on the wall of the cage. I once had a syrian and I found her dead getting bitten by hundreds of big red ants.. So I'm very worry if the same will happen to this dwarf. OMG. I'm so sorry for your previous syrian. Okay now what you can do is.. is there possible to switch his cage to another places? Its the ants are attract to your hammie urine? Dwarf hamster are very prone to diabetes. But hopefully its not. Well what cage are you using now? try remove your hammie cage to another place & at the same time clean your room if you place your hammie on your room & possible to find where the ants come from.. There must be some ants breeding place. |

QUOTE(nkw1987 @ Dec 1 2012, 12:39 AM) hey thanks babybb~ all these while i put them inside a aquarium and the bedding and diet all these while are the same when i gv it to my friends. the different is juz tat i put it in a normal hamster cage as it is more easy for my friend to carry. the bedding and diet is all the same. so i wonder wat happen at her house tat time. i juz hope she can recover as soon as possible. is there any medicine can be bought at pets house ? U're welcome May i know how old is your robo? Aging might be the cause of the fur loss too. You can try feed her some flaxseed which content omega-3 that help with her fur but dont feed too much just a bit per day will do & also you can feed her some vege like broccoli & protein like plain tofu. Some fresh fruit like apple but all this you can feed too much also probably just 2-3 times a week in a very small amount. Regarding the medicine i advice not to do so as hammie skin are extra sensitive so before we know the cause of the baldness & we simply buy medinice to apply on it will make it even worse. 1 important question, do you notice any unsual sign of your robo? like scratching or grooming alot lately? & the bald that you talking about is it look like this? ![]() If she been scratching alot then you might need to bring her to vet. They wont charge you much on hamster. But always call to confirm if they accept hamster 1st. Not every vet are experience with hammie. Wish a speedy recovery to your hammie! |

Hmmm my hammie still on the medication & havent see any slightly improvement. The dose just enough for 2 times more i guess. What should i do? I been observe my hammie lately. I'm not sure he was grooming or scratching. He licks his paws & scratch & then lick again & scratch. What does this mean? grooming? Sometime time he tends to lick & scratch until his furs are wet just like ppl after applying gel And also he lick his back legs & scratch his ears. I check nothing wrong with his ears. No mites no redness. Just wet wet i think it's his saliva Any ideal guys? QUOTE(jeremysoon93 @ Dec 2 2012, 09:38 PM) Haha thanks. I bought him and 2 other robos on the very first day of this year. One already died in July. :/ Oh so sorry for your loss. But bonding with robo take alot of patient. We are very lucky that hamtari doesnt scare of us from the 1st day we brought him. That's why i will do whatever i could just to give him a good life. Oh 1 more problem jeremy, my hammie been peeing alot after every time he drank the medicine. Is it normal? & it's like brownish in color. Will your hammie like that too after take medicine?Yeah amazing eyes, but they're actually terrified of me. Spent months trying to "connect" with them, not much hope though. Hmmmm I'm not too sure of the meds. Usually hammie probs like that I tend to leave it for itself to go away. The wetness, my robos pee in the wheel then run on it, so they always have their spiky hair-do. |
