Guys, i am also newbie to fishing. I am thinking of getting a rod + reel for myself. I have tried sea fishing at Pulau Ketam fish farm before but I still haven't try any pond or river fishing I feel like getting a rod that can do sea fishing as well as fresh water fishing. Any recommendations ? Well, I am not sure what is the minimum weight of freshwater fish but I think for saltwater fish is minimum 1kg because the first ever fish i caught was a grouper which weighted around 1.5kg. I have played around with this Ajiking Hyper Metal 4000 reel before and I found that it's 9+1 ball bearing is very smooth. It costs around RM120. Is it worth it ? suitable for saltwater and freshwater fishing ? does the weight of the fish matters when it comes to reel ? because the specs of this reel didn't say the max weight of the fish http://www.tcetackles.com.my/hypermetal.htmThanks in advance This post has been edited by kumanosuke: Oct 26 2011, 04:10 PM

Not a bad price Ajiking reels are okay. For a 4000 series reel you can fight fishes up to 6/7/8kgs.

It max out at 6-8kg fish, is it suitable for smaller fish like less than 1kg ?
Since there is maximum weight, is there a minimum weight ?
what is the average weight of freshwater fish in Malaysia ?

Its suitable for small fishes as well but you need to ensure the line you're using isnt too thick. There's no average weight of freshwater fishes.

How about the rod ? i think the type of rod is highly dependent on the weight and the type of the fish because of the flexing on the tip of the rod, right ?
I am thinking of using the same reel but different rod when i need to fish something smaller thanks Max for entertaining my noobie questions

If you're still new to graphite rods, get a medium action fibreglass+graphite one and when you have enough confidence then move on to full graphite rods. Im not a fan of graphites so im using a fibreglass rod. Heavy but super powerful.

My fighting set in Pandamaran/Sealion ponds costs less than RM100 and still reeling up 2.7kg jenahaks. Fishing is 10% equipment,20% skills and 70% luck.

I would a little percentage on knowledge/experience. Especially on fresh water fish.
Thinking about going to kelong fishing in kelong paradise next month. Anyone is a kelong kaki?

Poll added. Btw, kelong paradise is quite expensive and from what i see in the magazines, the catch rate is so-so only. Might as well go to Pulau Ketam's kelong to fish. RM10 only for whole day fishing.
