I feel that the reason of purchasing Phil Jones is not due to lack of Centreback, Phil Jones height is almost same as Johnny Evans, I feel that the reason that AF bought him is to replace Owen Hargreaves. I have watched few games for blackburn match before, it seems like the manager likes to place him in the defensive midfielder line instead of Centreback. But for England match, they place him as centreback. It seems like he can play both position quite well. A good player he is.

Agreed. I really think SAF will test him out to be Hargo's replacement during training, pre-season games and carling cups. If he doesn't fit. He can slot back into defense anytime.

this will be the key to his development....Evan's development had been halted because of this

i wont complain about too much CBs...coz i still rmb quite well the terrible period where we had to use de laet-fletcher-carrick-evra defence at one point

so in short - P Jones bought in to be a robust destroyer like Hargreaves, and not to play in CB, which is his natural best position?
I'm very interested to c how SAF will fit him in the current squad...does he slip straight into the S11, but by displacing who? Carrick? Ando? Fletch?
Or does he start from the bench, and use him when we need to wrestle back possessions, etc?

he may play a few odd games at DM when needed, especially if Fletch is not fit or injured..but imo he will not play there on a permanent basis this season...i even think he may get more starts at CB rather than DM...it goes down to SAF really, will be interesting to see how he utilises PJ

Rio isnt fit all the time like always, and he's not getting any younger too..so that leaves Vidic to partner either Smalling, Evans or Jones...I believe all of them will get sufficient games..We didnt do well in the league cup last year, maybe with the added quality among the youngsters we can do even better just like the season before..most important thing is that he is only 19, is English, is already known as a leader and is also a gem

Vidic is still looking good for another 1 year or 2, ( or maybe 3 ). Ferdinand I have to agree as well as his days are not long as first team. We do have 5 centreback right now ( if added phil jones will be 6 ). Right now we need someone who can tackle like Roy Keane and dominating in midfielder. The only player that able to do that is Fletcher, and currently there is no backup for his position. I think the days for carrick is kinda over to me. I myself believe that Phil jones will be awesome placing in defensive mid, which man united is struggling need this kind of player right now.

Alex Ferguson is still trying to give Evan chances to prove his worthy as First Team, he still got lots of work to do. Give him some month for him to train himself better and ever. I personally think that, a great centre back. Height is another major thing you need to think of. For example like Vidic and Ferdinand. I don't say Phil Jones would be bad in centreback because of height, he's great in CB, but if trying to win the heading, he might lose because of height.

Anyway, a creative midfielder I think is needed, provided that if the likes of Gibson is going out. Need an experienced player at least. Where's Defour

Carroll + Henderson + Jones...excess of 70m+ pounds, and how many int caps they have in total atm? 3? no wonder SAF said no value in the market but also have to spend la of coz

Pushing a CM into DM might not have the full effect SAF wanted, so maybe he's doing it the other way round- pushing a DC into CM. Not too sure how he performs against Spain U21 but from 1 source I heard he isn't that fast? Don't hold my words for that though

I thought Gibson is confirmed that he will be going to Sunderland at 5mil pounds? AF did take some selection into consideration such as Ashley Young, Sneijder or even Modric. I feel that our midfielder are really really really weak. I do hope that the like of Essien type of player would join us.

Essien had the option but chose Chelsea. No need for him.

maybe PJ was a surprise purchase since Liverpool are lurking around him, so that's still 1 more to go

maybe SAF has already set his sights on the midfield youngsters...introduce them into the first team, play a considerable amount of games whenever Ando/Carrick/Fletcher/Giggs are out...a bold move of coz, but we pulled it off with the class of 92 and we can do it again

Smalling IMHO progressed very very well when he joined us. Only his first season with us but his performance on field is very consistent and solid.

I believe Man Utd will have the resources and capability to do the same with PJ as well.

probably because Young's transfer news didn't generate as much butthurt as PJ's, thus result in less discussion lol

i dunno why but smalling reminds of rio and PJ reminds me of terry.. probably because of them wearing the england jersey.. only that we have both of them right now..

I feel very very weird. When we are already on the verge of completing ashley young's signing, the media hype so much about sanchez favouring us. I thought the 6+5 rule has been banned by the EU? Any discrimination based on nationality is illegal there.
