As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Hi alien, I uploaded the Scholes Centurion video (a compilation of all 100 goals he scored throughout his career in Man United).

If it's allowed, I thought why not share with other forummers by posting the link in the first few posts. The link is : http://rapidshare.com/files/367460321/PS_Cntrn1x0.rar =)

Edit (08 Nov 2010): Looks like the link is no longer working (thx to sinoffire for notifying) so I reuploaded the video to a new link:

rain always favours barcelona....because water makes the ball roll faster on the ground, pour some sand at wembley then they will have problem playing their free flow football...

If you recall when mourinho managed Inter, he purposely made the pitch on San Siro not be cut prior to Barca's visit.

He claimed that the longer grass will disrupt their passing game, cannot roll nicely to pinpoint passes, and will require more energy to play the pass. so in that sense, the smoother the pitch, the easier for barca to keep the ball rolling

i think that only happens on malaysian fields. our amazing "water pond", the ball can float on that puddle and all of us will just be whacking water around it.

lol thats if the water accumulate and become mud. but if that happens, referee wont allow the game to continue, as the ball will stuck in the mud.

King VDS, Fabio, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Giggs, Park, Rooney, Hernandez.

Fabio could be swapped for Rafael, and Giggs for Fletcher.

or Sir Alex could play,

King VDS, Fabio/Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Giggs/Fletcher, Carrick, Nani, Park, Rooney

and here is where Park would be AM/SS behind Roonsta.

Or because of the misses against Blackpool. We can't afford that against Barca.
*
let's hope it's bcuz of the injury rather than sidelined for form-related reasons.

i mean, to be not even featured on the bench..is rather cruel to me

park was left out in moscow too.and not forgetting he was absolutely superb in the 2nd leg against barca back then.form, stats, luck, charm, formation and even players a b c d ..x y z...all goes out of the window in a final.

90 min+++ for our team on AND off the field to get us to the finish line. flex.gif

Rafael sure very sad... His brother is preferred over him.... But looks like a strong team there smile.gif

Anyway regarding the absent of Berba.. I thin Park's left out on 2008 final was even more shocking...

hmm if we go by the of park's case in moscow then i guess berba's is virtually a non-issue

nvrtheless, i'm pretty damn sure whoever gets on the pitch will give his 110% to make everyone proud!

thats the spirit.yeah we all feel for the ones left out but think of the gaffer whom actually have to make the decision, thats the as big as it gets compared to anything else.im more then sure berbs, rafael and the others will be supporting and going trough it all as if they are the ones on the pitch.

SAF said on leaving out Berba,"Thats the worst part. There should be 11 subs on the bench for the final. It's heartache, a terrible decision to have to make."

Smaling ahead of Evans already it seems. ohmy.gif Seems to me like Alex Ferguson is more afraid of his midfield's capability rather to off striking attributes. When we seems dead , i think a massive change will occur in midfield rather to off Owen coming off bench. Quite frankly dont see Owen coming off the bench

That's Chicarito secret for scoring so many goals. He stay betwen the last defenders? That remind me the king of offside, Filippo Inzaghi. Similar style of play, only Inzaghi got bigger physical built.

I notice Evra has been a little off this season. That's why i think SAF regularly play both Rafael and Fabio. Maybe one of them will replace Evra in near future.

First half:

Valencia really not his day...probably too nervous for final
Evra really off today...just now towards the end he missed again...
Giggs really nowhere to see...
Carrick at least has few nice thru balls....

Park is the man, covering Evra...then run over right wing to cover Valencia then in the middle cover Giggs...he is everywhere

Valencia is doing OK but 2 players guiding him. They know he is one of Hernandez's source to score. thats why they give him no space at all.

MU being taught how to pass around? The wall let Pedro through with a simple 1touch passing and NOBODY tracked him!!! Wakeup or can kiss the cup goodbye.

yeah. Enforcer to clean the messes! Park is just running to mark Messi, Xavi, Iniesta etc....he alone cannot do all job and if he keep on like that, he will be running out of gas very soon... he needs more frog juices... sweat.gif

That's the advantage of possession / passing style. They can torn and caught your opponent out of position. I think the defense did fairly well contained all the Barcelona bombardment.

PJS powered by kimchi should be okay but rest must buck up abit.
i think carrick is doing okay but he is the creative he usually does better with fletch/ando being the enforcer.

There is a BBQ party inside United penalty box. Too many guarding Messi... Once they switch over to the other flank, really no eye see.

Not try to be professor or so here. But here is my opinion:

The way Barca play it demand very much stamina from their players. No matter how good they're, there will be some of them tired at later part of the game >65 - 70 minutes. Their tempo might slow down a bit that moment (from what i saw from Emirates match).
If my theory correct (actually Mourinho original gameplan at Bernabeu semi-final 1st leg), MU can nick it if they can keep Barca at bay. That is the perfect time for MU to score.

Edit: oh no. That's Messi for you. He can create magic.

midfield is 101% overrun, defence is left all alone to defend.\

barca like having xtra player...we are like playing with 10/9/8?

as a neutral, its Man Utd midfield that has been the problem..Giggs obviously can play that central role but not against a team as great as Barca..thats the main problem..over run..

Did you noticed that MU has no passing through the center of the field? Like targeting long pass and wing only. No wonder so easy to close down. They avoid going 1to1 with Barca in the midfield.

Barca deserved it entirely,no arguments here.

Have to admit though, its really difficult watching the team play like this. Its not the Manchester United i know.

Not often u play in match where u get no time n no outlet ball everytime u receive the ball. just forget the match. heal the wound during the summer n pray next season we can improve our overall play.

Because Barca got into gear and moved around like interchangeable chess pieces. United don't know who check who, so people are drawn in and strung out all over the place.

It's good football from Barca. Unfortunately it really does seem whenever they play a match it looks like only one team has the ball while the other is helpless most of the time. It's fun to watch if you're a supporter, but for a neutral it really does make for boring football.

i dun think buying a midfielder or two this summer will provide a quick fix to enable us to match barca anyway. this whole barca team is molded to press /attack/def as one unit. Their tactical awareness n positioning is unbelievable.

Btw,i don't think anyone should comment, let alone blame Fergies team selection. We all knew that the line-up we started with was our best, and had performed very well in the big games leading up to the final. The only thing that was surprising was the absence of Berba from the bench. But we gotta be honest to ourselves,he wouldn't have had much of a chance considering our horrible possession anyway.

I doubt it. I think United did as well as they could without the ball without playing like Jose Mourinho's Inter. Barca's fluid and interchangeable style kills the traditional way of formation football and nobody has come up with a solid and consistent way of beating it.

unlucky for united.. some decision were biased by the ref :/ .. and talk about how poor valencia was..

SAF really made a mistake on the first-11.. but between this and the CL Final in 2009.. United showed a lot of determination in this one and very good defending nod.gif..

the one in 2009 was poorer imo.. defence and midfield wise hmm.gif

Hats off to Barca, for playing great football on the biggest stage of European club football. I like both teams, but still, my blood is RED. Can't blame the

lads for trying very, very hard to try to stop Barca playing, which was effective for the first 10 minutes tongue.gif . I won't be too harsh to criticize the team

as even Real couldn't stop them in the two legs. For 2010/2011, Barca is the best team in Europe. If anything, we weren't fast enough to counter

attacking Barca. We could see them deploying Masch and Pique deep to stop Hernandez. Anyway, on the sentimental side, we couldn't win the CL for

our great Dutch. cry.gif

they will have their time in the sun then fade away.
it seemed a few seasons ago that chelsea and mourinho will rule english football for the next decade but it didn't happen.
it seemed a in the 90's that nothing can stop juve from winning everything.....but after 1999 they also fade away.

i kinda felt we did our best. other than valencia, most of our player didn;t really performed badly. Its just that barca made us look ordinary, as they do to most team. Other dan VDS, my vote for MOTD in unted team would go for rooney. Worked his S off. Maybe we need to train our players to be more comfortable on the ball n not hoof it over the top at every opportunity.

Well, seem like this time lost, Ferguson is far more happier if compared to 09 Rome. At least still can see his smile on his face.

Salute Iniesta trade shirt with our Scholes! biggrin.gif

And feel pathetic for those ABU who create account just to troll here after we lose, ask us sleep in shame? The whole world more shame on you as you all don't have the guts to use real ID to troll. I dare you to use your real ID to troll here, if don't dare just go watch celebration or go sleep. rolleyes.gif

Lastly, thanks VDS for so many years service. You always will be remembered cry.gif

Anyway, on the sentimental side, we couldn't win the CL for

our great Dutch.  cry.gif

yeah, u r right, Pique and Masch always on Hernandez @ss.. not much chance..

No chance of heading.. no chance of doing much @_@

unlucky for united.. some decision were biased by the ref :/ .. and talk about how poor valencia was..

SAF really made a mistake on the first-11.. but between this and the CL Final in 2009.. United showed a lot of determination in this one and very good defending nod.gif..

the one in 2009 was poorer imo.. defence and midfield wise hmm.gif
*
what mistake? i kinda thought everyone here advocated for an attacking line-up be4 the match start n we got it. It was the same team from schalke. Do tell me ur original first-11 be4 the match start

Compared this to the 2009 final, this year is definitely better, even though we don't have a superstar like CR7. That year, it was just quite pathetic to

watch. tongue.gif This year, we played more as a team. Next season should be interesting. I want to see Rooney bossing our team. From tonite's match, he

is quite well above the rest of the team mates in terms performance.

Well done Barcelona, 2 brilliant goals that no one can stop even VDS is one of the best goalkeeper. Feel sad but I think this as a lesson that Man Utd lacks of competent midfielder just like Xavi, Sneijder and Iniesta.

we lack mental strength and the hunger to find goals. look at how tirelessly xavi and iniesta work.

We need a central midfielder with strong presence on both defending and attacking. We seriously lack of that figure to compose for attack, whereas they have 3-4 midfielder just queue-ing up to shoot for fun. Haih...

we didnt have fletcher the last time, we can pick him this time, but he left out.. his energy sorely missed. IMO, nani's involvement cutting in from right and shoot was something that should be deployed earlier?

real heart broken.

Sorry VDS, no grand sending off..
