That what i'm afraid for... because the latest trend between telco show it point that way... (DiGi lock the IS, Maxis lock the DZ)...

Care to give some rough review for the phone, the build-quality and all, smooth or not...and after using it for few days, maybe can give us a detailed one smile.gif

can anyone with stock non-rooted desire with latest updates check the radio version number?

also need a recommendation guys - i miss the HTC calendar widget - the one which fills the whole page and you can click any date directly on the widget to add appointments and such. Im on CM7 and cant find a suitable calendar widget replacement.

DS price from Maxis quite ridiculous compared to IS price by DiGi... On 12 month contract both also RM1499 but on 24 month IS much cheaper...

But on telco point... Maxis got larger coverage compare to DiGi... (Or i am wrong...)

Well, finally had time to play with the phone.

Build is rigid and solid, Rubberized back on the top and bottom section is quite nice on the touch. the small lil bend on the bottom of the phone ( as compared to the Hero/Legend ) is much subtle and doesn't seem so intrusive this time around.

Open up the rubberized battery cover is not a feat but putting it back could be tricky at times, other wise everything is fine.

1ghz Snap dragon seems to be doing it's work well, everything seems to be very smooth.

in the apps page, while scrolling, app icons are seen to move from page to page in rows of 4 instead of random rows. Guess that's one ui updates of Gingerbread.

The rest are pretty good. So far I have no complains. I've used both Desire and SGS and I would say it's comparable in terms of performances with a slightly smaller size.

Well, on one look it's black but if you look at it from different angle it has shades of dark grey

Well, I've both a Maxis and Digi line. Let's just say no matter how cheap digi could offer a phone, I shall not go near it. What's the point of having a good phone but lousy coverage ?

+1 on that one... that why i mention Maxis has larger coverage if compare to DiGi... but then again... Maxis could make it a bit cheaper...

Should be cheaper, as IS plan is the same with DS plan, i guess in terms of performance & spec-wise, people will go for IS instead of DS..if Maxis lowered down the price for DS plan, that would be thumbup.gif

They already clarified that they will bring some of the 3.0 features. Probably no 3D effects for single core phones? Beats me.

So anyway we can only buy the phone from Maxis? So if i want to buy without any strings attached i have to pay 1799? Sorry i have no experience in this telco exlcusivity thingy since i'm still using a Nokia. tongue.gif What about warranty? icon_question.gif Other choice would be AP set right?

i don't think we can buy outright from maxis at the moment. If im not mistaken, we need to wait for a month or so until SIS release the phone exclusivity from Telco.

Im currently on hotlink for more than 10yrs. Heavily thinking whether it is the wise choice to jump into maxis postpaid for this phone...

Maxis postpaid is not worth it. Especially if you use the internet a lot. Bill shocks will cause heart attacks. Go for the Incredible S instead.

But maxis FAQ say this.

Can I purchase the Androidā„¢ device without a contract?
Yes. You may purchase the Androidā„¢ device outright based on its RRP.

Upgraded from a Nokia 5800, and quite pleased but not all that excited. 7/10 for me.

Can the owners shared if you are facing the below issue with Wifi as per gsm arena review?

"Wi-Fi signal degrades when you cover the top part of the back panel"\

The Desire S has some Wi-Fi issues though. You will lose nearly 80% of your signal strength if you hold the phone around the camera lens. We did experience this ā€œdeath gripā€ issue only in landscape mode with a hand over the camera lens plating, but this is not much of an excuse. So you need to be careful if your Wi-Fi signal is weak and you are using the Desire S in landscape mode.

Via his tweet, Cyanogen may give up developing its MOD with loadboader signed.
Normally with signed / encrypted, it is hard to break 100%.

Let's hope HTC will re-think like SE.

Guys, i bought mine HTC Desire S 4 days ago, in a shopping complex in my place ( Bukit Rahman Putra. Sungai Buloh) Suprisingly only this guys has it. he said he took 4 units, and 3 of them sold, only left 1 last unit which i've bought it. 1 yr local warranty, so i believe its AP Set. Free gift given, is the casing(normal RM10 casing), GPS Car holder, and he owe the rubber casing which still dont have in the market now.... sad.gif ....

I came from SE K800i, and i know that its a big 'jump' to Android platform. and i dunno anything about 2.3 Ginger Bread or High5 bread...lolz.. well, internet is there to learn anything that we want, interesting phone indeed.. and its not a phone, its a super computer + phone i must say !!! biggrin.gif

I just bought one from Maxis TTDI without contract. I remember reading somewhere in these forums that the phone needs to be registered online within 7 days of purchase to qualify for 2 years warranty. Do any of you know whether this is true, and if it is, the address of the website? Thanks.

Well according to Maxis... You already got 2 years warranty from the time you purchase... Because i believe register online only for SiS sets not BrightStar sets...

Yes, there are two types of Screen Protector, One Anti-Glare Matte Screen Protector and also Clear Screen Protector
Anti-Glare Matte - Anti-fingerprint but you couldn't see clearly, most likely you can see rainbows on the screen
Crystal Clear - You'll see your phone clearly. Without any interruption to your eyes.

Desire S more budget ma compared to Incredible S, biggrin.gif

Tough Case isn't out yet. We only have Barely There at the moment.
Not sure bout they having full back/front protector for Desire S.

The screen is very easy to clean it seems and i'm quite confident of gorilla glass. I don't quite like the added bulkiness of casings. ._.

Desire S is not that much cheaper than Incredible S but i'm just looking for something with 3.7" screen. I considered Xperia Neo as well but the lack of RAM & ROM kept me away from it even though it might have a better camera. Plus i don't quite dig that weird rubbery hump at the back of the Incredible S.

Yup, tried it on my Desire S. Death grip exists. But like you said.... only when you touch certain areas around the camera lens.

Battery wise.... I think it drains slower if compared to an iPhone smile.gif

I thought Desire S should have slightly sharper image because although both have the same SLCD, the Incredible S has a larger screen. Same resolution but when packed on to a larger screen(IS) should be less sharp when compared to a smaller screen(DS). No?

Mostly in standby mode, with some sms, youtube for 5 minutes, music on loudpspeaker for around 30 minutes, 20 minutes of light gaming, and 30 minutes of call, by the end of the day(from 10.30am to 12am), I'll get around 65% of battery power left.

I'm not using a dataplan, so I only switch on the wifi when I'm using the internet. And no, no synching.

Charged till it's full the first time I got my phone. Waited for about 3 hours till the notification light turned from orange(charging) to green(full). Then I took it off the charger and started playing with it. Of course, I knew about the whole charge your new hp for 8 hours thingy. But couldn't resist the temptation drool.gif

On the 2nd charge, I purposely used the battery until around 8% was left, then recharged it overnight. So far, the battery's been holding up pretty well. I think it performs better when you drain it low and then recharge it. Read it somewhere online. But I'm using advanced task killer and android manager too. Don't know how much these two apps affect the whole process though laugh.gif

When the battery bar goes red i charged it. Then i played a bit that night and the next day. Lasted almost a day with lots of playing around.

Li-Ion battery no need to charge like old Ni-Cd batteries. You can charge whenever you want. But for the peace of mind you can still follow the old rules. I personally does use the phone until the battery bar goes red and then charge. Usually takes about 2 hours from around 15% (when the warning comes on) until full.

Yup. That's with pretty heavy use. No need to charge the whole night. It's a myth that people still hold strongly.

Also, although most tech blogs suggest installing some sort of advanced task manager, people in the comments usually says otherwise since Android manages multitasking pretty well. So i don't install any sort of task manager. Just do the tweaks like only use GSM, airplane mode when you're sleeping, no haptic feedback etc to save battery life.

Pick up my Desire S today from Brighstar distributor here in Kuching. Desire S should be available in Kch by this week. If not, you still can ask the distributor to bring in the stock for you.

So how to register the waraanty?

Hi, I just got my desire s on Sunday from subway pyramid. Singapore set for RM1540 with credit card. Just the phone and no freebies. Coming from e71. Such a dilemma... I like desire s since its launch at MWC but I was already on digi smart plan, and incredible s was such on such a good deal with digi, bigger screen etc.. However, everytime I ask a digi centre, they only offer the set for new subscribers. Then maxis launch desire s...but at a ridiculous price, somemore everytime I ask a maxis center, they only offer the set for contract only.

My point is, the Telco staff just wanna earn comissions. They don care about company policies that we can buy the phone as we like...with or without contract. I hate this mentality and culture.

Bought a Singapore set, the shop says there's one year warranty. Haha...ya right.

When can we be like other developed. Country where consumer's right is well protected?

Anyway, I think desire s better than incredible s bcoz my thumb can reach every corner when I'm holding it in one hand.

No. That's not a shortcut. doh.gif

Press the volume down and hold it. It will go to mute, and then to silent (vibrate). There will be an icon showing.

What I'm more worried about is, there is no bluetooth voice dialing. Really sucks for drivers. I don't even need voice actions, I just want to call by using bluetooth headset. Which you can't...

How much for the case? I just don't like the added bulk, that's all.

Anyway, i stumbled upon an app called Wifi Analyzer. So i did a small test to see whether the Wifi death grip is true or not. Just happened that my neighbour also had his Wifi on just now.

If you do that, you'll need to adjust the ringer volume back again everytime you set your phone to silent or vibrate.

You don't have to do all that with the widget. Just one press for silent.

Warranty from Brightstar, Desire S distributor in Malaysia. It is more expensive though since it's close to the RRP. sweat.gif That SG price is around our AP price.

buy m'sia sure a lot problem.. i stay near sg so no problem to me.. usually stuff buy from sg more safer cos there not so easy find ap like at m'sia.. i not sure m'sia selling is real or fake but mostly fake... w/o pay tax they ship to here cos can get it cheap then they sell much higher compare to sg.. sg government got control market price.. if u stay kl better but m'sia.. but i staying south side so.. u feel me? nod.gif

Well it's normal to be a bit paranoid with online seller. I have doubts myself even though i already spent thousands on this forum tradezone already and never got conned yet. Not really by luck. Just have to survey that the seller is really genuine. In this case, he is. I can tell the phone is definitely original and i have no problem at all with it so far. Just that you have to send the warranty card to Brightstar yourself to claim the 2 years warranty.

Hm. I tried your way and my conclusions are:

Profile shortcut icon
1. It adds a icon on the screen. I don't like it but you might not mind it.
2. You need to press twice to silent it. Once mutes it, once silents it. But once silent, press once to go back to normal.
3. If the icon is not on your home screen, need to scroll etc.

Volume rocker way
1. Press and hold, one step.
2. But if your profile volume is not max/min, then you have to adjust manually to your desired volume. Requires more steps and attention.
3. No icon on screen. No scrolling required.

Choose your favorite way! thumbup.gif

On a normal working day, i use it as a normal phone. It's at home playing it around that eats a lot of battery. So can last at least a day. tongue.gif Really depends on what you're doing.

I find it weird that the battery usage stats doesn't include CPU/GPU usage. Mostly it's just the display eating the battery.

You seem so paranoid about buying AP sets. I have been buying AP sets for the past 15 years and have yet to have any serious issues. Just buy AP from regular sellers - check their posting and record . ASk members here if you are not sure. I buy my AP sets even from Penang , Perak, KL, JB ( most of time online and do not meet the sellers ). The important thing the AP sellers must be a Msian company ( ask for the company name supporting the set). There are some sellers who parttime or bringing in through grey importers - avoid such if you have doubts. Actually just ask members in this forum if you have any doubts about the sellers

There is a new shop at the centre selling mainly HTC sets - I remember just behind Charlie. Last month I saw all the latest HTC Android, windows mobiles were being sold.

I am very familiar with buying AP and original - has been buying such stuffs for past 15 years. Buying AP as I say buy from a reputable shop ; even in KL eg LowYat there are many shops selling AP - my advise is always first ask the company supporting it. If the seller is honest they will show you the AP warranty card, which for all good purposes be a Msian registered company.

Actually what I know most horror stories of AP sets are mainly on the Nokia phones which is being stripped off its original accessories and plenty of Nokia FAKES ( look alikes ) especially at Malacca. But nowadays with the prices of batteries, cables, chargers dropping so drastically - most AP sellers ( even unethical has ceased replacing these accessories with generic )

I'm using Case-Mate for Desire S. Fits my phone perfectly. It comes with a semi-matt screen protector too.

I have a few extra sets. PM me if interested.

On a side note, I used most of the Android phones in the Market. And I realise I like the 3.7" more than any other sizes. My Desire HD is lying at home and I sold my Incredible S. 4" and above is good for surfing and gaming I suppose. But as a normal phone I'd say 3.7" is more than enough.

So far my phone hanged once and sense crashed a couple of times, but probably as a result of poking too much. Now it seems ok. Haven't rebooted almost 6 days.

I have a small pocket inside my pocket where i put my phone. And then i put my handkerchief in the pocket for extra padding. I put my car keys with wallet in the other pocket. My C6-01 screen is still scratchless, but the plastic button at the bottom is basically full of scratches.

You can look for DS reviews. Some of them does review the apps including mail. PDF and Office attachments displays just fine. smile.gif

Can't do 3G video call unlike Nokia, but you can do it over Wifi. Lots of apps for that like Tango.

POP will get a copy of the mail and it is a one way communication. What ever takes affect in your phone only appears on the phone, it is never updated to the mail server.
For example, you read an email in your device (it will be marked read in your device). However, when you log into your mail server through browser, you will see the email is still marked unread.

IMAP is a 2 way communication. Whatever action is performed on the device takes effect immediately to the server.

Don't use POP... better use IMAP... i use both Yahoo and Google Apps mail with IMAP...

Cool thanks for the clarification. Just set up the email to use IMAP. smile.gif

Smaller screen consume less battery.. Install task killers so when ur phone is idle it will auto kill apps in background (saves battery) hehe.. Adjusting brightness and screen time out also can help conserve battery power..

Won't the task killing eat battery if it's doing it all the time? hmm.gif I'm skeptic with task killers since lots of people are saying bad things about it including battery saving apps.

I posted in that XDA thread, mine seems to do 20mA idle. They said it might be something to do with Sense because Arc seems to idle around 5mA. Same CPU with DS but we have more RAM. Gonna see how it does tonight in airplane mode.

I'm somewhat divided on the issue regarding task killers hmm.gif

When I first got my DS, one of the first few apps that I installed was an advanced task killer. I used it for about a week. Battery would normally last for about a day.

Then I read about how task killers were unnecessary, especially on new phones like ours, with Android 2.3 with a higher amount of RAM.

So I uninstalled it. After that, I've been able to squeeze an extra half a day or a full day's use of battery from my DS icon_rolleyes.gif

So now, I get an average 2 days worth of battery time on my DS without a task killer as opposed to a 1 day worth of battery time on my DS when I had a task killer installed thumbup.gif

Conclusion? You tell me laugh.gif

I havent get the IS as currently digi at my area is running out of stock then i come across lots of user complaining the auto reboot issue and some claim while change the network to WCDMA and it helps. Now thinking whether should go for Desire S instead of IS since both spec more or less the same except the screen size and camera.

I also tried it then 2 days later phone reboot. Uninstalled. notworthy.gif

Some battery tips.

http://www.htcinspireforum.com/htc-inspire...ttery-faq-9795/
QUOTE
1) Do I need to prime or condition my battery?
A) No, Li-ion batteries do not need to be primed or conditioned like old nickle based batteries. ONE full drain and recharge is sufficient. (See also #2 below.)

2) Is it better to let the battery drain a lot before recharging it, or can I recharge it when the battery is only a little low.
A) Smaller recharges are better for battery longeviity than larger or full drains.

3) Is it ok to leave my battery plugged in, even if it is fully charged?
A) Yes, it won't hurt it as long as the battery doesn't overheat.

You should get a data plan at least. Without data plan, you'll be charge standard rate which is insanely expensive. 8mb of usage will easily cost you rm70-80.

Yeah, its my mistake i guess ! cry.gif

Pls guys all of you be careful... anything that says Data plan turn it off..

There are a few :

1. Settings>Wireless&Networks>Mobile Network (Connect to the Internet) = DISABLE THAT
2. Settings>Wireless&Networks>Mobile Networks>Enable always-on mobile data = DISABLE THAT
3. Settings>Wireless&Networks>Mobile Networks>Data Roaming (uses data charges) = DISABLE THAT

Well, unless you are in unlimited data plan, than ignore the above.......

if u decide to buy data plan, please ensure ur data plan is already activated before u start enabling the above... did that mistake last time...

always disable data roaming, its damn expensive... charging between rm20-rm40 per day depend on carrier...

I put it in my pocket on a hot day while I'm driving under the hot sun. Take the DS out.... it's warm. Normal la.

I was in a call for more than an hour. Take the DS out..... it's warm. Also normal la.

Play games on DS for extended periods of time....... Well, you get the idea wink.gif

It's NORMAL. Unless you're telling me that you're charging your DS in an air-conditioned room and your DS is warm for no reason....

well, i think your right ! i just called maxis to un-bar my line, was talking to them.. most of the smartphones has this features ( likewise ours are new in the market, sure 'smart' enough). If the wifi signals weak/turned off, it 'might' use the data of the carriers(Max/cel/dig...etc). Scary enough, but lesson for me, turn off anything that says mobile data...

On the other hand, maxis's cheapest data plan package is RM18 for 100mb, if exceeds normal charges for data applies ( no notification/sms if exceeds)

The apps will either hibernate or terminate itself depending on situation. So the answer to your question should be NO smile.gif

*
You should disable Background Data in Account & Sync as well when not using wifi. nod.gif

As long as it's idling and using 0% CPU, won't be a problem.

Enable background data, but below that option, switch off the 'Automatically Sync' option.

my desire went crazy today... it automatically send out text messages to contacts of which I have been texting for the past several weeks. in 15 to 25 minutes hundreds of sms sent. crazy!!

it all happend when I pull out the battery n sin card for inspection.after rebooting all the auto sms sending madness started to happen.

I suspect the phone trying to resend those sms that I have transferred from my blackberry during the portover to this phone. so my advise is to not transfer your text msg from your old phone when migrating to this phone.

Market and some other things need the background data to be enabled. Basically, when you go online just enable it. When you go offline disable it. You can look for toggle switch widget in the market.

Also, i have found a really nice Sysinfo/Sysmonitor/Task Manager (not auto task killer!). Lots of info about the phone and nice graphics as well. Just ask uncle goog about System Panel. tongue.gif

You cant flash a custom rom, there is no root yet... S-Off = Security Off... Meaning the security on system partition that prevent any change on reboot... Without turning that off we can't change the system partition, can't have permanent root, can't have custom rom...

There's already 2 custom ROM on XDA but only if you're lucky enough to get S-OFF DS. Most retail DS is S-ON including mine. sad.gif

Can S-Off with XTC Clip which is a hardware solution. Most people are waiting for software solution since it's easier and reversible if want to claim warranty.

To check, disable fast boot under power settings first. Turn off your phone. And then power on while holding volume down. When done select reboot to boot the phone normally.

Hello all DS user, just to check with you, from your experience with Desire S, when you using wifi in landscape mode, does the signal drop? because then your left hand will hold / cover a bit of the top rear part area.

i'm planning to buy DS so bad but this wifi death symptom make me a bit scared lar, what about using case? does it solve the problem? (remember iPhone 4 death grip? will solve if use bumper) is the same action can be apply to DS?

Thanks everyone.

wait software solution
or
wait your warranty ends

whichever comes 1st...lol
the way i see it, DS and IS didn't have enough dev to work on it, 95% of the community is pure end user.
even DS dev depended on IS dev on rooting solu
it's kinda hard..but lets hope they will do something.. even right now we dont have much option on Custom stuff sad.gif

More tips from XDA!

QUOTE
Welcome to android!

As it's your first htc phone, there are a couple of default settings you should turn off to stretch that battery life out. 12 hours doesn't sound right. (You play a lot of games? Is 3G signal weak in your area?)

1. Turn off "Always on mobile data". Menu> Settings> Wireless & Networks> Mobile Networks. Turning this off stops your 3G being PERMANENTLY live when turned on. It'll just come on when necessary now.

2. Turn "pocket mode" mode off! Menu> Settings> Sound. This is new to Sense 2.1 and makes it ring louder in your pocket our bag. It does this by keeping your light sensor and proximity sensor pinging away so it knows when it's in a pocket. Madness.

3. If you have Wifi, use it in place of 3G. It uses less power believe it or not. Plus leave sleep policy set to never. Having it wake and sleep all the time again takes it's toll.

4. I use a fantastic App called Tasker. Allows full automation of your phone, including things like turning phone into airplane mode between 1am and 7am, and automatically turning wifi on when I get home and turning it off when I leave.

6. Don't use task killers.

The battery cover does have an issue. Mine also make a clicking sound when pressed. Since the battery cover is also the antenna, do you have any reception issue? If not then it's not so bad.

Well, I had mine worse, then I took off the cover and refitted it a few times. After I 'think' I've done it properly, the squeaky sound seems to have reduced quite a lot smile.gif

my desire s has let met down today.

it won boot anymore.

firstly it the screen hang when i was browsing internet.

i try to wait for a while, later try to reset phone, but i pressed the power button and nothing happened.

then i removed the battery and restart. the boot was very slow and after it showed home screen, i can feel it was very laggy. and after a while it hang again.

i restart again, sometime the screen is just blank after restart.

now the battery already dried. i charge, but nothing happened. its not charging.

sigh~ my first android failed on me. will revert back to cokia fhone.haha

try hard reset your phone

1.Turn the power off. If your HTC Desire S is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
2.Hold the Volume Down button
3.Press and hold the Power button until the device turns on
4.You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
5.Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
6.Press and release the Power button
7.Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO

I'm not sure about charging the phone for 8 hours because once it's full, the battery just stop charging. ._. Also not sure about the on off thingy. sweat.gif

It's true that Li-Ion battery will be ruined if fully discharged, but also from what i read that it should still be safe to fully discharge because there should be a safety level or something. But definitely don't leave it fully discharged for too long as in a few days.

Need to fully discharge once a month for calibration purpose.

Also the batter indicator does stay at 100% for a really long time. Then it drops faster to catch up. whistling.gif

Ye got a few custom rom already. Have to wait for more good news from HTC about current device with signed bootloader then probably more people will join this ship. Otherwise, XTC Clip is the only way for now.

most review doin the scratch test with sharp things and they scratch it fast . try press in the glass hard and scratch it slowly . even diamond get scratch . get a screen protector for double protection . the screen protector not expensive also

fyi gorilla glass website faq didnt say the glass wont scratch . the glass still will scratch just wont scratch that easily .

Most people here probably not interested in 3.7" screen anymore. tongue.gif

Use SP if it puts your mind at ease. Go naked if you're a careful person. But accident still can happen.

i would say this phone is pretty above average considering the price we are paying for it.

i noticed the connection speed is way faster and more stable than iphone 4 and i do surf A LOT due to the entitlement of unlimited data usage drool.gif (i left apple cos of that)

i noticed this phone looks even better if the owner happens to be a girl due to the compact design with a 3.7 inches screen.

Haha not all guys like a huge slab of phone in their pocket and not all girls like small phones! Too bad they didn't offer it in pink, only in black and grey. But there's the Wildfire S for that. tongue.gif

Maybe depends on which country the set came from? Ori is 1750 or so i think.

My set is ori brightstar set. Got it for 1799, the RRP. Higher price due to being an early adopter.

im looking at ap set though. i think ori price is more stable since it has rrp. so i think its safer to buy it from sellers in lyn. i reallyy love the red version which u cant find here sad.gif

Red? I thought there's only black and grey. Even grey is not available here.

I can play it with the built in player just fine.

It's not that bad. Just don't cover the upper part wholly with your palm because that's where the wifi antenna is. The signal does drop but those with root can apply a fix already. Maybe a bit problematic when you're in landscape mode. Only wifi is affected not the phone signal.

Yup all S-ON. Unless you're really lucky to get S-Off out of the box. But don't worry, software S-Off should be soon. Or XTC-Clip if you can't wait.

I wonder where is TS. hmm.gif
