hhhmmmm that really depends about your taste

basically rule of thumb in basic purchase:

30% for your speakers
30% for your amp
30% for your source
10% for cables

with 3k......or slightly more......

let's just assume the first 3 items you have a budget of 1k each

speakers (not in any specific order, it just pop out of my mind)

1. Wharfedale Diamond 10.1
2. Kef Q series....can't really remember the model
3. local brand call E-Curve....which is surprisingly quite good
4. Mission
5. Mordount Short

Amps...
1. All time favourite Marantz
2. Rotel
3. Cambridge Audio

now...the source can be tricky....you can have a few options depends on your preference

1. USB DAC and have your mp3/flac/digital music go through your laptop/computer USB
2. Ipod......well honestly its one of the most flexible source where you can have music anywhere
3. Streaming source.....DLNA/UPnP players
4. of coz the all time audiophile CD player

there's a used PM7001 and CD7001 both Marantz KI Signature going for sale in the market...roughly 3k
not a bad start for such a budget.....
can look for a pair of used B&W or any british speakers to go with it......

GI Jie......yes...HK is cheaper due to tax.....
its just that I had bad experience buying XLO stuffs last time.....that's why i'm skeptical about HK

I know it's a very late reply. Just want to update the news for my stand. Decided to drill a bigger hole in my wallet and bought a pair of speaker stand from Sentinel92. Avoid deal with him because he will keep offering you no-nonsense deal, super helpful, and good pricing.

Anyway, reached my end game, and I don't see anything to upgrade yet. But if I was given a chance, I just want to buy vintage speakers to complete my vintage setup. For now, I'm happily listening to my modern-vintage hifi setup and it's been a very long time I stop listening from my head-fi.

Ah, that's the bad part. So buying used vinyl is better when can inspect the condition.

You can begin with XLS Encore plus any Maranatz and Yamaha AVRs or Integrated amp. You will be surprise how good they sound for 3K.

how does a 50watter fair in driving the bookshelves?

hushymushy... the tiny 50watter did fairly well for my living room at 11 o'clock. To be frankly, the sound comes really close to Marantz 5008 except the lower end, which was not that punchy. But for the price, you can't ask for more.

How big is your study room? XLS has a lot of lower end and and if your room has insufficient space, you might need to adjust your listening position. You may consider a pair of X-CS Encore for better bass roll-off, it is a sealed box.

fx20...i plan for near field listening...having the speaker on the same table

the room size is 14ft x 9ft
room ratio is ok....but my challenge is that I have 2 workstation tables in the middle of the room....facing each other

one for my wife and the other for me

the speaker rear will be about 6 to 7 feet from the rear wall
haven't fully decided how the room will be

i might be looking at wadia or audio research vsi55
saw a used vsi55....very yummy

hushymushy... the room size is good. Near field is great as XLS has really good off-axis response. But I do suggest to place them on speaker stands, standing before your table, to give enough sensation of the correct left and right source.

Your ear will bled with tube amp if paired with XLS encore. This ssi55 will be a nice match.

Perhaps... PC-->Emerald Physics DAC2 --->ssi55-->Encore.

I have seen a lot of the above setup... you can't complain the sound for the price, they are awesome for the price.

BTW, I got the Sur Fit, 8 of them to be precise. Walked past customs at KLIA. Still lying around at my place cos didn't have the time to fit it onto the speakers. Will perhaps fit it onto my amps instead cos don't wanna drill the Guarneris even though they are not on their stands (which is still with Alvin).

Having 2nd thoughts about the Passlabs. Too many break ins at my place (house) and at where I was hoping to move to (house). Might opt for a condo instead and the Passlabs take too much of the limited real estate.

Gi Jie.....your sort fut should be used primarily for your cd, amp and rack.

for your speakers....i highly recommend you use back the stands and use harmonix rf909x-mk2 or top end RF-999M

you need some vibration and synergy to bring the bass out for your speakers

Ya. I have in fact decided to use it for my amp and my CD player. The height separates the components quite a bit so better air circulation & hence more heat dissipation.
