jurong shipyard is better eh? coz i from malaysia and i never been to Sg b4 in my entire life.
PPE? sorry bro, i dunno. maybe can elaborate a bit and I can google wat is it?
Thanks
Jason Ng interviewed me. jurong shipyard hr department. Mr Asmawi is the HSE manager eh? I see...
Err... Tanjung Kling site. aiks... no pretty girls then. haha!
Oic, yeah, thats what i heard. to oversea the workers and make sure they follow the safety rules. wow, u really know bout jurong.
u work inside eh bro? thanks bro. if yes, would like to chat with u more b4 i go interview so that i dont look as if i know nuts. haha
*
PPE means personal protective equipment and you'll be trained to catch those who flout the rules when it comes to PPE. If you could earn a commission from fining those who violate safety rules within the shipyard, you will be a VERY rich guy since at least 1/2 of them flout the rules, one way or another and a typical yard has thousands of workers.

Best place to catch these buggers are at scaffolding areas since everybody who goes up one are fed up with using the body harness and even if they do use it, they dont anchor themselves to at least to separate safety points.

QUOTE(bellion @ May 9 2011, 11:35 AM)
India Indians have flooded the IT and banking operations sectors  in Singapore and have depressed wages.  Also, they have a reputation of exaggerating their resumes and capabilities and typically do not meet job expectations.  Hence, the intense backlash against them.
*
This also tells alot of singaporean employers in the SME department, their main concern isnt looking for the best but for the cheapest overhead cost.

I don't know about india indians in singapore, but in my experience working with the indians in india in my MNC, their concept of exaggeration is way beyond what malaysians are capable of. They've got this ability to talk as if they have superhuman powers but in reality can't deliver. And in concalls if you let them dictate the meeting, it'll be hours of talking and end up with nothing at the end of it.

Of course I'm generalizing from my personal viewpoints, your mileage may vary.
*
I too find that this is a very good generalization of them since i too more often then not encounter this kind of situation. Talk till your ears fall off but the result are basically diddly squat.

Dont worry, alot of employers are now moving towards hiring more PRC's and burmese since the indians are getting more expensive and bangla may not have certain prerequisite skills.

yeah bro, 99% working for them already. now waiting to get my transcript and they gonna file my application to MOM.
yeah, true... the weather is so damn bad. even in malaysia it is so bad. guess, i got no choice but to endure 2 years.
the pay wise, it is really good for me as i wont get anywhere near that in malaysia with my qualification.
so i guess, while i am young, just try first.
i actually havent talk to them bout benefits and etc.
should i ask them through email?
*
So you confirmed with them verbally on your salary but not your benefits?

Thats rather dangerous since nothing is final until you get the black and white. When i was first venturing out as a freelance guy, the No.1 tip that was given by all my peers were, "It aint final till its in black and white" since they "cheat" you on your benefits or even your salary since "talk is talk". Saipem is know for doing this about u-turn funny business, the HR guy may say your getting this and this, but when you see your contract, your getting less then what was agreed upon during the interview.

What about chinese from China? What opinions do you have ?
*
I usually interact with china chinese engineers, surveyors or superintendents. It depends whether their on mainland china or working overseas since most overseas china people would pick up english since its a necessity in order to do their job properly. The mainland fellas on the other hand are tough to work with since their not very proficient in english and they like to "skip" the rules and regulations more often then not.

Even in singapore with the local chinese or malaysian chinese people, if they can get away with it, they will.

QUOTE(bellion @ May 11 2011, 12:33 AM)
India Indians in Singapore purportedly impose their caste practices and look down upon Indian Singaporeans who are mostly of Tamil stock.  e.g. making snide remarks at them in Hindu temples and Little India shops -> naturally, Indian Singaporeans are rightly pissed off at such blatant discrimination, more so by foreigners in their own country. Moreover, India Indians look upon themselves as being of higher class than Singaporeans as they believe that the Singapore govt invited them into the country.  In reality, it is because India Indians almost always hire their own village/town brethren for job vacancies in their departments which is why one sees a sea of them in bank back office operations (e.g. Citibank, Stanchart, Credit Suisse, etc) and in IT divisions of many MNCs.
*
But if you noticed, there seems to be a trend whereby indian restaurants are now hiring china workers to do work normall allocated to their own indian brethren such as making roti canai or being the waiter.

I've seen 4 people stay in a single common room. I've heard you can fit around 6 to 7 in a room since i know a guy who sub let a condo with 4 rooms to 22 china labourers.

QUOTE(bellion @ May 11 2011, 03:39 PM)
That's because it's pure economics due to employment pass/ work permit rulings.

Excerpt:

This means an employer seeking an Indian waiter might need to hire someone with relevant qualifications and a minimum wage of $1,800 under current regulations.

The owners told The Sunday Times that the Chinese workers are usually hired as cleaners rather than service staff because of the language barrier. Most are work permit holders, speak little English, work an average of 10 hours a day and earn about $1,000 a month.

http://www.soshiok.com/article/5952
*
Why cant they hire an indian worker on a work permit at the same salary range? Why does it have to be from china?

Most indian welders and fitters in shipyards and construction workers are indians and they basic pay is around 700-900. With OT their salary goes above 1000.

Plus employers can get around the high cost of minimum wage for an s-pass guy.

Say the s-pass gets $ 1800 a month according to mom law, the employer can state on their pay slip that they get that amount but in reality they may shortchanged them.

I know a couple of SME's which does this. I know one guy who's an S-Pass who's supposed to get $1800 and his pay slip states that same amount but every month is bank account is credited with $1500. No guesses where the balance $300 goes.

This usually happens to banglas, china, indians and burmese people since alot of singaporean employers know they can bully them since those people need the money and cant afford to job hop and to pay back the loan they took to get a job in singapore in the first place.

anyone can shed some light on the explosion at shipyard in benoi road today? heard it's a pretty big blast and the shock wave travel quite far, even to the extend of shattering some glasses at building far away.
*
I just passed by the area at around 3pm. One of the open air workshop at that yard was totally collapsed.

Looks like only a big explosion will warrant something news worthy. Just last week there were 2 deaths in keppel shipyard within one week but no news was reported about it. You can only sweep the dirt in your own carpet so to speak, a large explosion is harder to hide.

QUOTE(ch_teo @ May 11 2011, 09:44 PM)
some of the balance goes into here:
levies

lot of sg employers find ways to exploit them. their 1st job all salary is paying for their food, accommodation & manpower supplied agent for the 1-2 years. end up nothing after S-pass expired. get nothing back to their own country.
that is how smart most of the sg employers are. the locals are not willing to take such physical demanding & dusty job.
so if lot of people especially those academically low still think it is great to work at sg, think thrice, unless one is very highly pay.
*
You should change from "smart" to "modern day salvery". But i doubt singaporean employers will change their stance of this, its easy for them to exploit foreign workers for cheap labour since it would mean they would have to face a cut into their revenue which is unacceptable as is kaisu tradition.

I also found out that you can bribe your way during a commercial vehicle inspection for around 100 dollars. I know a sub-con whose vehicle i had the "pleasure" to ride in and they guy told me that the engines busted, the steering is whacked and the radiator needs topping up every few days and he told me that his company made a "special" request to their mechanic to help them pass through the annual vehicle inspection. He even saw the vehicle report which initially stated that the vehicle inpection failed, after his boss called his mechanic to sort it out, the vehicle passed so in that one day, that vehicle could have failed and then passed the inspection.

actually kinda think of it... they pay you higher because of the safety risk and harsh working environment... so if you take in acc of that,  the pya is just right... have to ask toughnut... he's in that industry
*
If you work for an employer, then the rate is average to above average in a shipyard working environment. If your in the private contractor situation, your usually paid according to your contract agreement which usually entails a daily rate. One of my former colleagues who left the company to do freelance work is now getting at least minimum 300 dollars a day as a WI, working on behalf of BP.

That rate is within the yard, it only goes higher if he works overseas which there are no shortages of available contracts.

The Filipinos, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Indian, chinese, and Burmese that are looking. For opportunities in Sg, have to factor in the cost of air travel unless they are paid for by potential employer (hardly the practice in Asia). It will be lower for you relatively.
*
The worse off would be the burmese since they have to pay tax to their government since their working overseas.

S Pass fellas have to pay 80 dollars a month in "income tax" to general than shwe.

At last PSN is backup, i can continue playing black ops.

Perhaps you have never met any highly skilled with knowledge on very niche field Malaysian working here in Singapore. Probably above your pay scale to get to know all these expatriates.
*
Oh ic. So its not so uncommon to get PR eventhough your on a work permit.

I recently had a chat with one of my former colleagues whos an indian national who has been trying very hard to get PR but has failed twice, so he got in contact with one guy who got him PR status within 3 months of filing his application for around 10K. Talk about being efficient.

Its actually none of my business. As they say, it takes 2 hands to clap. So one guy is giving the "under table Money" and another fella is the willing recipient of said money. It boils down to that individuals integrity or lack thereof.

There are quite a number of these cases, you just dont know about it since its kept in the down low so to speak.

At least now my former colleague can go freelance since he has his PR and isnt tied to his current company.
