I find your notion that there are quite a number of these cases to be unbelievable.  My two decades of experience in working with Singapore individuals and companies certainly is in direct contrast to your allegation.

Contrast that with Malaysia where the "number of cases" is the NORM rather than the exception.

I suppose you just havent met the "other" side of singapore. Any who, my former colleague just tended in his resignation and is looking for a new job since he's not tied down to a work permit system.

A few months back i posted pictures of a work shop in singapore which proves otherwise, in terms of safety and even environmental protocols its hard to believe the NEA never investigated the place and banned that workshop from operating, from what i heard, the proprietor paid a substantial sum to escape being shutdown and was let off with a warning and so far there hasnt been any follow up and he's still operating.

Yes and no.
HDB has a minimum occupancy period.
However, some owners already have a roof over their head.
The reason they bought the HDB was for investment and rental.
So according to the law, they cannot rent the whole unit, hence the master room locked part.
Need to keep a room in case of spot checks.
There are some cases that the owner does use it as their personal storeroom.  laugh.gif  laugh.gif
*
Thats odd since i am currently renting the whole HDB unit and with no "locked" rooms with a tenancy agreement and stamp duty as well. If it were illegal, i doubt i could get the HDB to stamp the tenancy agreement.

Hi guys,

I heard there is a website to test that whether you are eligible for PR application or not..

it's a traffic light thingy.. green means you have bout 80% chance to succeed, yellow light means 50% suceed and so forth.

But I couldn't googled it, anyone has the web site address? Thanks.
*
I think its a feel good website since the criteria for PR applicants are not black and white, unless you have money and the connections, then thats a different story altogether.

Erm...minimum occupancy period has passed hence can rent the whole unit?
*
Not sure about that, from day one of renting the whold HDB we never had a "vacant" room for the landlord. Since all of this ruling is just for HDB to have their paws into homeowners cookie jars.

if u are the 1st generation PR, you don't have to serve NS if u came here after the age of 16. if u were a PR and your son is getting a PR, even he live in Malaysia for 18 years before coming to Singapore, he needs to serve NS when he gets his PR because he is considered the 2nd generation PR. smile.gif

Looks like someones afraid of NS duty.

i am staying at ang mo kio and using starhub maxonline now. to my surprise, i am experiencing FREQUENT disconnection. it is a CABLED broadband which i thought this should not happen. the speed is quite ok though. my package is 16mbps and max download rate i got is 600kbps...  smile.gif
*
It depends on the speed on the other end.

I usually download my internet shows and i get around 1.2mbps consistently. Torrents varies around 300-600kbps.

my torrent can only run for like 15 mins and my line will be cut off, disconnected. i suspect they are controlling torrent downloads. have u ever face the same problem?
*
Nope, so far on starbhub maxonline 16mbps, i do not experience any cut off period so far.

Thats cable. Mobile broadband is a different story. I used to have a M1 line and iniatially they didnt restrict torrents but after 16 months into my contract they started throttling the hell out of torrenting whereby you cant download anything at all. Talk about an over exaggeration but all ISP nowadays have a clause which state they can basically do anything they want which contradicts their them giving you the speed which you pay for but control what you do with it which is actually part and parcel of the internet. Its like saying "you can have your cake but you cant eat it".

But i dont so much torrenting nowadays since you can watch netflix with a paid subscription and their tv and movie library are fantastic. Since its streaming video, most ISP's dont block the protocols so its smooth sailing.

yeah, i'm from KL too.
i guess Sg is nearer to the sea, hence the country is more windy.
having aircond everywer and alot of buildings are connected might also contribute to the cooler feeling.
*
Actually having alot of airconds within near proximity to each other in an area which is building dense would have an increase in ambient temperature.

Hmm I probably will take M1 since many friends I know are using starhub cable broadband, so I would assume majority users at my HDB unit are using Starhub... by choosing M1 most probably I wont share the same bandwidth with them... Or M1 and Starhub is sharing the same bandwidth per HDB?
*
If im not mistaken all of the 3 major telcos use the same cable infrastructure except for singtel which runs on dsl.

So either way, your bandwidth is being utilized by all 3 major telcos. Its more prominent with fiber since opennet leases the fiber lines to all 3 major telcos for data services.

not really...some areas have district cooling thus they dont emit any hot air they buy chilled water from a centralize service provider. buildings in marina bay, suntec area area using this other buildings which do not use district cooling use centralized chilled water system where by cooling towers are used which are normally located at high areas for the heat to disperse

sg seems cooler becos of the density of buildings and of cos the no of trees. density of buildings provide coverage trees cool down the areas too..... all of these are actually a whole lot of planning by the URA......
*
But as you have mentioned, this applies to central business or commercial districts. Residential areas such as ang mo kio or toa payoh are more building density to the number of foliage, say like yishun, sembawang, tampines or pasir ris which isnt so hdb dense.

At above $2 per sq ft on paper I also would say it is pricey cos around the area I also looked at a few places that were like $1.70-$1.80 per sq ft (rental per month). But after seeing like a dozen places over the last week+ ... it's the best value (to me). don't mind paying extra for very close to mrt + (relatively) big 4NG + full furnished + nice ceiling fixtures & etc after renovation ... don't care lah ha ha.
wahlau i am small fry junior manager level only leh. see my rental place also need to find hdb and not condo.
*
Its not so bad with some HDB's, especially the excutive HDB's which have bigger floor space and at a reasonable price. Unless living in a HDB is not your style.

If your image conscious with people whom you dont know and have never met, then it would be a problem. I rarely visit the site and so do most of my colleagues and frens since it just amplifies how petty singaporeans can get.

I usually go there just to have a laugh and ridicule a large majority of the stories brought up.

Closing your eyes and catching forty winks isnt so bad in the mrt, just dont hog the priority seat and dont be an idiot and use a sleep mask since it makes you looks like a douche.

Actually speaking of MRT/Bus ... how do you guys define "elderly?" sometimes i sit i see some auntie or uncle and I can't decide whether they qualify for 'elderly' ... so dunno should get up or not haha.
*
Then there are those elderly who are physically more fit then some fat middle aged guys. A good guideline is if they look like your grandparents, then give them the seat.

Looks like someone here has a prejudice to banglas. In the morning, i usually find a seat next to a china guy since everybody will avoid them as if their the plague.

Only time i wont seat next to them is after 5pm since i know that their sweaty.

*
Nah, most singaporeans are to shallow to be not be insulted if you think their pregnant since they get a seat in return.

thanks. this morning alone (~30 mins) i have experienced 2 times of disconnection. this is what i am thinking as well, a cabled connection should not experience so frequent disconnection. i will drop by their outlet at vivo city later. see what's their comment on this issue.  vmad.gif
*
Of course you have to expect that you may get disconnected on a mobile broadband plan. A cable connection is always the best for speed and reliability. The only reason you would want mobile broadband is mobility and not being tied to a house in singapore.

my starhub 16mb home broadband very sxxucks recently.. Everyday dc once i back from office. Call starhub they say current the signal at my area(Simei) is weak.. what the hxxl the explaination is.
One of the lesson i've learn. Say no to Starhub!!
*
im using starhub and everything is ok. Speed is quite good and i have yet to get experience DC that you guys have mentioned. One thing i dont like is starhub are the certain restrictions they like to place.

Fortunately i can resolve that matter by vpning to my companies fiber broadband DMZ zone network.

I wonder which 3G phone network is good for a smartphone, usually its between singtel and m1 but lately due to M1 disruption and the poor speeds from singtel. Looks like all three have really start to drop the ball.

Usually the general tip for home broadband is dont get anything higher 15mbps since thats the average max speed your gonna get on international lines.

For mobile its safer to be on 2mbps, i used to have an M1 4mbps mobile broadband line and only at certain areas and at certain times can i get full speed, the usual i get is around 1-2mbps.

My office fiber lines get the max 25mbps which translates to around 3.15 mb/s but i am disappointed at its upload rate of around 800kb/s since i was expecting around 1.5mb/s.

Anybody know of an establishment which sells beer at warehouse prices and in cases rather then 6 packs or individual cans?

Preferably asahi beer.
