I thought the distortion refers to those pincushion type? but a cheaper alternative is the sigma 12-24 DG (for FX oso can lah) that one distortion control quite nice but sharpness not so nice |

From Nikon website,
0.29m at a focal length of 16mm or 35mm, 0.28m at a focal length between 20mm and 28mm I think its measured distance from sensor. |

Slight differences only, its probably due to new firmware or variations between sensors.
