ahpingko, take this setting for a start, then adjust from there..

f42, u made a bounce card for it right? use a small part of it only, not too big piece. flash head point up to ceiling, dont put the camera too near to your face.

shutter priority 1/30s iso400, flash on TTL (auto).. see what happens..

ahpingko : When you are using bounce flash, keep this in mind - it's like bouncing a ball. The aim is to make the ball hit your subject. The ball (light) comes out of your flash and then hits the ceiling. When it hits the ceiling, it bounces. So watch your angle. If your angle is not right, the ball will bounce behind you so you might not get the result you want.

Try putting the flash into TTL mode. Don't bother with the manual flash power setting for now.

When you put everything to manual - you have too many variables to work with and will get easily confused.

its not that much the matter of what focal length you're using, your flash with respect to your face is not in line, you get dark because no light is reaching you. we've already told u, to use AUTO on your flash. forget about manual flash for the mean time..

i laughed at the lumiquest and omnidome sample la.... it should enough to show the marketing ppl(and ignorance photographer) that, it does not soften your shadow! and it proves that bounce is even better (indoor)... thinking back how i laughed at those wedding shooter that uses all sort of modify from whale tail to ojibala thing that make their flash head heavier and stress on the hotshoe!

and the diagram for shoot throught umbrella is a little wrong.

ahpinko: forgot to tell u, which was told to me by albnok long ago, manual allows 1/32 min power, but in Auto mode, it has hidden 1/64 power.

Maybe ahpingko's flash has the same problem as mine before I sent my camera to service.

Inconsistent firing. Sometimes very low power sometimes full power. @@

if the contact point is dirty it will go crazy...usually the contact point on camera will get dirty because of oxidation..i just use abit of perfume on a cotton bud and wipe it...if after cleaning still got problem,maybe need to check your flash or your camera body...

u used sand paper on the contacts? Plz dun tell me its the rough type... Ink eraser enough edi la bro..
