Hi everyone.
I'm new to mac and just bought the latest 15" 2.0 mbp.
Every time i on the computer, the superdrive will make some sort of sound.
I thought that is normal until I find out that my friend's 13" mbp does not make that sound.
Do you guys superdrive make that sound too? hmm.gif

Other than that, the superdrive wont grad the cd. Nothing happens when I put a cd in.
I'll need to go System Preferences and click "CDs and DVDs" to make the drive grab a cd.
I thought the superdrive have some sort of sensor that will detect a cd and automatically grab it?
Please enlighten me. Thanks guys. smile.gif
*
hm shouldn't be like that. the sound not that loud la. n yea if u insert a dvd it should automatically detect it. try open the Apple menu and do a Software Update. download and install all updates and see if the problem persist or not

Once they launch lion, it'll be included in all their macs.
*
should be accurate eh. they should pre-install Lion on all new macs leaving from the factory

but these lion macs wont be sold at resellers yet bcuz they need to clear the snow leopard macs out 1st. so u cant buy the lion macs right after the lion launch tongue.gif

guys, can someone give brief overview of the advantages of macbook pro. any unique features compare to other normal notebook.  notworthy.gif

note: my knowledge in mac os x = 0%
*
apart from the OS...

pros: nice screen, damn good trackpad, sturdy built quality, thunderbolt, long lasting battery. lots of cases / films if u want extra protection, can swap the dvd drive for another hard drive smile.gif (mod lah)

cons: only 2 usb ports (very close to each other summore), no bluray (if that matters to u lah), no HDMI and VGA port (can support but need to buy adapters)

Just bought my MBP 13" i5 yesterday. I did charge last night about 8-10 hours. For now, at the top bar, the battery duration vary from 4-7 hours in 10 minutes.

Is this normal for new MBP? Maybe need several charge cycle to make it accurate?
*
it heavily depends on what task are u doing. if not doing anything, wifi off, bluetooth off, low brightness n such, it'll display ~7 hrs. once u start to play a HD movie (example), then it'll go down

Save the money, buy AppleCare please. RAM and SSD price will go down over time. You can add that later.

I still disagree (seems like a trend) to max out new Mac during purchases. Enjoy your Mac and when you felt the needs only upgrade, that will give you more millage. Unless you are those person who change your Mac every few months.
*
i agree! if got extra budget, spend on ACPP 1st. next is physical protection stuff, including a good padded notebook bag. an extra charger might be useful for some people.

Hey hey people. Macbook Pro 2010 15' i5 2.4ghz user here. Wondering if it's worth upgrading to 8gb RAM. My questions are 1. Will it affect my battery performance? 2. Do i get major performance boost?

Added on June 20, 2011, 3:02 pmEdit: Made my choice to upgrade the memory. =P
*
major performance boost is a definite no tongue.gif maybe u wont even get any improvement at all. launch Activity Monitor, open the Memory tab and monitor ur RAM usage when u're using ur mac. if Page Out is very small (<1mb?) then adding RAM wont do anything...simply bcuz u dont need more ram.

u will only see an improvement only when u need more than ur current 4gb RAM. that's it. RAM doesnt make a computer faster, it just lets u do more stuff at the same time

look into SSD for a performance boost

DP does not carry audio signal.
*
the newer ones do. that's why we have the confusion.... some newer miniDP-HDMI adapters can pipe audio but some cannot since they were built for the old no-audio spec.

i guess it is due to the thunderbolt port have non-standard DP specification..
*
er no lah, it's before that. DP can support audio since the 2010 macbook pros. 2009 n 2008 ones dont support audio

but isnt 8 weeks on the counter something weird? or is it normal? got it from machines klcc btw . i thought all new products should have 0 or 1 week at most?
*
the counter shows the age of ur battery, as in how long since it was manufactured. obviously it wasnt manufactured the day u bought ur macbook, that explains why it is 8 weeks

so yes it is normal. dont worry about it smile.gif

also for 95% health, or 98% health...actually it's not a big deal. as long as u take care of ur battery, it'll serve u well

i dont know anything abt battery manufacturing but this is what i think about those <100% health reading

the health reading is just how much is ur current capacity compared to the original capacity. the original capacity is a theoretical fixed number (not the actual, real life capacity), showing what is the theoretical maximum charge the battery can store based on the battery design. e.g. my battery's original capacity is 4600 mAh...i dont think there's a way to manufacture a battery that can hold EXACTLY 4600 mAh.

due to real world errors, probably material imperfection or small manufacturing inconsistensices, the final real life battery capacity, even maximum, wont be near the theoretical maximum. probably 99%, 98%. even if ur health shows 100% it's probably actually 99.7% or something. OSX or coconutbattery would compare the this real life capacity to the theoretical capacity and we get 99%, 98% etc

just my opinion lah tongue.gif

i saw ppl selling palmguard in garage sales. but the price quite expensive. RM 120

is it worth it?
*
lol i bought mine at rm140, about 2 years ago

nonetheless i think it's a fantastic piece of protection for ur mbp. looks great too. mine's a bit dirty now, but if i were to get a new macbook/pro/air i'm sure gonna get another palmguard for it smile.gif

that palmguard looks like a kind of metal thingy  laugh.gif
*
yeah about that.. based on my previous experience, let me warn u early to not bend the palmguard too much when u're applying it. make sure u align properly and slowwwwwwly stick. the adhesive is quite strong, so if u stick wrong n u need to peel it off, the bend might end up as a permanent whitish crease. it's not obvious under fluorescent light but under sunlight it's very ugly

i got those creases on my 1st palmguard (this was for my 2006 1st gen MBP). i took extra extra extra care when applying the palmguard for my 2008 mbp and it looks perfect smile.gif
