Why pick Metteor-Link antenna?
======================

Premium grade antenna made by tier 1 antenna pro factory. Not made by 2nd or 3rd class small factory in china.
Most local dealers sourcing overseas antenna stock by online purchasing without really been to the exact factory to do site survey:
a) quality of factory: small factory or large factory?
b) do they really have wireless engineers? how many workers there?
c) do they really equipped with advanced antenna making and testing pro machinery?
d) what are their standard Quality Control process?
d) do they ever manage to get western countries orders which require stringent antenna quality?

### Testing of external 3G antenna on 3G modem. ###
This reviews will be covering:
i) is it really more effective & helpful by using external 3G antenna?
ii) performance testing among different type/manufacturer's antenna product.

This reviews starts with:

Testing (1) - Modem alone (with internal antenna)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Conditions:
Wheather: sunny, no rain.
Location: indoor, in a room.
user posted image
Results of Testing (1):
Signal Level: RSSI: -99dBm
Bar chart: 1 bar
Tips for U: RSSI number is signal level, it is accurate signal level measurement against bar chart indicator. RSSI with lower number means higher signal level, RSSI with higher number means lower signal level. User should always refers to this information when available.
Conclusion of Testing (1):
Weak signal reception level at this spot with modem alone.
Testing (2) - Modem with fancy design non-tradisional external directional antenna
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Antenna tested: brand W directional panel antenna - self-claimed High Gain 35dbi AT all frequency band from 700MHz to 2700MHz.
Antenna is positioned in a slope way as seen in picture, as that is the best direction I tested to get outdoor 3G signal.
Tips for U: Why pick this antenna for testing? Because this is the TOP MODEL among those china fancy design non-tradisional antenna flooded into market that self-claiming superb high gain XXdbi AT all frequency band...

user posted image

Results of Testing (2) (Part A):
Signal Level: RSSI: -95dBm
Bar chart: 3 bar

Conclusion of Testing (2) (Part A):
Signal reception level (-95dbm) is slightly better than modem original internal antenna (-99dbm), but not in great extend, so this definitely NOT A 35dbi antenna as it claim!
It a fake dbi antenna.
Tips for U: If you want to know more about how to identify fake dbi antenna, please refers more tips at end of this review.

Testing (3) - Modem with tradisional directional 3G yagi antenna Metteor-Link
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Antenna tested: Metteor-Link 3G yagi directional antenna 18dbi
Antenna is positioned in similar slope way as seen in picture.
user posted image
Results of Testing (3)
Signal Level: RSSI: -85dBm
Bar chart: 5 bar
Conclusion of Testing (3)
Now you can see true capability of tradisional 3G yagi antenna by Metteor-Link, improving from -99dbm to -85dbm! A true 18dbi yagi works far better than those good looking fake 25dbi, 35dbi, 48dbi...antenna in market.
Testing (4) - Modem with omni-directional external wide band antenna
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Antenna tested: an omni-directional type, wide band 800MHZ-2700MHZ, 3dbi to 5dbi antenna.
Now I do a test on another type of antenna ~ omni-directional antenna to see its effectiveness.
Antenna is positioned in vertical standing way like in picture as it is not a directional type antenna.
Tips for U: omni-directional antenna's coverage area is like a donut shape, not a ball shape as many misunderstand it.

user posted image

Results of Testing (4):
Signal Level: RSSI: -97dBm
Bar chart: 2 bar

Conclusion of Testing (3):
Omni-directional antenna is not as effective as directional type antenna in the case of getting outdoor signal from remote base station such as 3g, 4g LTE or Wimax.
It is because omni-directional antenna is providing a 360 degree donut shape reception/coverage area, it is suitable for getting signal at SAME FLOOR.
But 3G/4G LTE/Wimax and commercial WiFi base station is not at same floor with user, they are built on building roof.
On other hand, directional antenna is focusing on one direction, far range reception capability, therefore ideal for getting remote signal from a particular direction.

Testing (5) - Modem with omni-directional external dedicated 3G antenna
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Antenna tested: an omni-directional type, dedicated 3G band 2100MHz, 5dbi antenna.
Now we look at another omni-directional antenna, but this time is a dedicated 3G 2100MHz omni-directional dipole antenna, it focus on 2100MHz, instead of previous generic wide band antenna.
Antenna is positioned in vertical standing way like in picture as it is not a directional type antenna.
user posted image
Results of Testing (4):
Signal Level: RSSI: -97dBm
Bar chart: 2 bar
Conclusion of Testing (3):
Again, it conclude that omni-directional type antenna is not ideal for 3G/4G/Wimax scenario, even it is dedicated 3G omni antenna.
SUMMARY OF THIS REVIEWS:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1. Directional type antenna performs far better than omni-directional type antenna in 3G/4G/Wimax reception matter.
2. If you want performance antenna, stick with TRADISIONAL panel, yagi, parabolic or dish antenna, PROVEN RESULT! They are no good looking, but serious antenna! Don't waste money on others.
3. Basics knowledge for end user to identiy fake antenna product:
a) Antenna gain (dbi) is commensurate with SIZE OF ANTENNA COMPONENT. Bigger/longer size = higher dbi, smaller/shorter size = lower dbi. (It is physics)
(# an aluminium parabolic with giant 40inch TV size ~ 100cm x 60cm only can achieve 25dbi, how can a toy size antenna 15cm x 15cm claim itself 35dbi, it is shameful and with obvious intention of cheating end user)
b) Antenna gain (dbi) is also commensurate with COVERAGE ANGLE (HOW MANY DEGREE) of antenna. Wide angle = lower dbi, Narrow angle = higher dbi. (same theory of torch light)
c) Focus-band/Dedicated antenna (for a certain frequency band only) can achieve high dbi. Wide band antenna (supporting from xxxMHz until xxxxMHz) are not able to make it high dbi.

These tips help you stay away from china made fake antenna in market.

* In network market, some 3G yagi 18dbi are now being mark up to fake 25dbi selling at higher price duping users! Why fake markup? It is because easy cheat and easy money!
That factory product quality not competitive with other factory, so resort to fake marking dbi to make easy money.

So don't be fooled got 3G yagi antenna over 18dbi in market now. To make 20dbi and above, it will always be available in type of parabolic or dish antenna only (bulky and heavy).

Tested the antenna today. RSSI strenghten by >18dB. DL speed improved 10~15%...E/I (BER) <-11dB where previously without antenna EBR is almost -20dB. Signal is stable with better EBR means less distortion and less CRC check. If you are using wireless BB at home, directional antenna should be considered...

Generic wide band panel antenna
*************************

Generic antenna: which means it is not made specifically for any wireless standard
Wide band: because it is generic, not dedicated antenna, it can cover from low xxx MHz up to xxxx MHz. Whereby dedicated antenna always just focus on a particular frequency so can offer high gain dbi.
Dbi gain: generic wide band antenna usually not capable of providing high gain > 10dbi in practise.

===============
Product Specifications:
===============

Frequency support: 806-960MHz and 1710 to 2500MHz
Dbi gain: 7dbi for within 806-960MHz, 10dbi for within 1710-2500MHz
V.S.W.R: <1.5

Physical antenna size (outer): ~18cm x 21cm
Physical antenna weight: ~ 450 gram

** As long as you see an antenna which says support multi frequencies and in physical size around of ~18cm x 21cm, it is a 10dbi generic wide band antenna, no such so-called 15dbi, 25dbi, 35dbi bla bla bla, those are false dbi mark up made by some china antenna manufacturer who can't compete in real performance but only able resort to duping techniques to survive in market. **

====
Note:
====

Since MCMC (SKMM) already condemned 3G telcos of running 3G service at 900MHz which jeopardizing 3G quality and overall service, it might no need for getting any antenna to support 3G 900MHz any longer.

This product fate to be determined later.

so celcom & maxis start tap in 900MHz for 3G at rural area...

luckily there are antenna capable to cover these frequency range, however, not 16dbi high gain bcoz that not possible for that specification.

cable for that dual band antenna is come with 1 meter 50-3 rp-sma connector, you need the connector converter to use with usb 3g modem or zte mf600, but for huawei B932 no need converter.

PM you the details.

will illustrate more in coming days as yesterday just opening up this thread, not enough time to prepare.

for huawei B932, it is equiped with external rp-sma connector, just get 3g antenna with rp-sma connector for it. (the pic above 10dbi 3g omni is in rp-sma connector).

For 3G omni antenna where their signal gain not over 10dbi, it is NOT recommended to use any base + cable, somemore 2.5 meter, because using cable means dbi loss happens (sums up per meter). cry.gif

E.g. 10dbi is gain value BEFORE take into calculation of dbi loss happens in the cable transmission within the base & the 3g device.

And those cable used with base are normally RG174/RG178 cable which yield more signal loss compared to RG58 cable. Both type are normal grade cable, but RG174/178 loss more dbi per meter. Normally RG174/178 for short distance.

That's why in the wifi omni antenna iSigal 9dbi thread (in the Q&A secton) already suggesting avoid using antenna base. Looking good, but performance not wise.

So you should get 3G omni antenna with rp-sma connector direct connect to your B932, omni antenna are light weight, no worry.

I have successfully modify huawei E1550 to use with external antenna. Huawei E1552/ E173 probably the same way.

in fact, not suitable to call that 'modify' as no soldering wire needed. Open modem plastic case, put a special cable with one end connect E1550 internal connector and another end in rp-sma connector to connect to yagi antenna.

So the above is the way to 'modify' any usb 3g modem which without come in openly seen antenna connector. In fact all usb 3g modem got a connector, whether inside or showing outside. The later is much convenient to add antenna, such as huawei E1762, E169 these type.

For your Dlink 3g modem, if you got internal pcb picture let me view then can tell which connector it use. There are 2-3 types internal connectors in use.

** The drawback is that the converter cable i source is too thick, not flexible, so I don't bring in that first, wait for better cable type, then would show to all how you can easily diy to convert your existing 3g modem with external antenna connectivity. I just to present the picture that every 3g modem actually can use external antenna. ***

answered in pm already.

just show it here again for others to read.

the antenna connector of E1762 just sit besides the sd card slot, open the SD card slot, can view the connector already.

the name for that connector is crc9. with a converter crc9>rpsma, you can in future add in any rp-sma connector 3g antenna for your huawei modem, no need buy specific huawei 3g antenna.

so open the slot + plug in one side of the connector converter + and connect the 3G yagi antenna to the another side of converter.

Advanced suggested working combinations:
==================================
While use in home, best working modes can be:
a) 16dbi yagi + usb 3g modem + 3g router with wifi = so that the 3g connectivity is stable (good for downloading), use wifi for in house coverage & sharing if any.

b) 16dbi yagi + ZTE MF600 + router with wifi = same as above.

c) 16dbi yagi + Huawei B932 = done, as B932 is modem cum router with wifi.

Asking how i using now?
I use 16dbi yagi + ZTE MF600 + Lan cable = superb stability.

Yes, I need one set of 16dbi antenna as shown for my E1762 modem. PM me price details.

of course it can use with e1762. in fact those 3g modem with ready external connector like e1762/ e169 etc is the most convenient way to add in 3g antenna. plug and play.

usb cable length got to test out yourself how long is still stable for the 3g modem working condition.

of course it can use with e1762. in fact those 3g modem with ready external connector like e1762/ e169 etc is the most convenient way to add in 3g antenna. plug and play.

usb cable length got to test out yourself how long is still stable for the 3g modem working condition.

cable to the internal connector? do you mean those for E1550 Dlink etc w/o external connector. This is separate cable, and the cable not mature yet as i sourcing more suitable one, as current i test on hand is too thick, not flexible to put inside the modem.

16dbi AMY 3G come with its own coaxial cable ...

so which one you mean exactly?

Yup, received mine. Works fine in low signal areas like office and home. More importantly can share access using 3G router. tq.

yup, 3g usb modem with ready external connector is the best companion to work with external 3g antenna. Simply attach it while use indoor/ in room and to be on the go, just detach the antenna bring the usb modem out conveniently.

Due to the reason to cut cost, manufacturer started coming out 3g modem model w/o ready connector. This is a step back design but the market prefer low starting cost and telco also welcome low cost modem as *free modem to subscibers.

3g antenna + 3g modem + 3g router is really a stable cum performance wise combination for indoor multiple users usage.

lately also found out that in alley area between houses where the 3g signal also really not acceptable quality, use the 3g yagi shoot up / out from the alley area and regain the stability and performance. Pariticularly useful for ppl stay in room behind the house, near the alley area where more blocking sit around.

I ordered 2 sets and got the items before CNY. Great service and fast delivery. Unfortunately, I didn't get any free time to test it out yet. Gonna use these two antennas to point to 2 different towers with two modems and two routers for failover/redundant connections. Will try load balancing as well if Maxis connection is stable. tongue.gif

3G load balancing ... shocking.gif

btw, u know the location of cell towers around?... telco staff can access such info, some senior promoter also can access to that, just don't willing tell much. i think subriber better sign up with permanent booth where one can refers back the promoter to ask him/her access to that info. if sign up at roadshow, they won't help any.

Hehe.. Unfortunately, I don't have such connections with Maxis employees. I'm just gonna point towards two different directions that give me the best signal. Hopefully my house is in between two towers. biggrin.gif

most of them won't tell this any.

this is quite logic, just imagine what if you know the cell tower is not far from your house but you still experience slow speed due to heavy users loads in that area and we know telco won't keep dump in money to expand towers, some more now they are fighting for low subscription price... so they won't let user catch this point ...

last time i met a yes promoter, he said he used to be wimax dealer, he can accessed to wimax tower distributions info, of course for now he know the yes towers locations. so if user subscribe to this kind dealer will be best back to this 'insider' and ask.

Hi...
I use huawei E173 Celcom broadband. In its packaging it say something like this:

USB modem supports:
GSM/GPRS/EDGE - 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G/HSDPA (7.2Mbps) - 900/2100 MHz

My internet connection is always GPRS sometime HSDPA and rarely 3G (0-1 bar strength, 3-5 second only)
I've tested the connection outdoor just outside of my room and the signal for 3G becomes slightly better, around 3 bars and appears longer.
I've checked with the Celcom center for the location of the tower and the tower location maybe around 1.5km from my room/house.
I read at some replies before that celcom is using 900 MHz at rural area. How do i now my tower use 900 MHz or 2100 Mhz?
So i want to ask ur advice for using the 3G antenna to boost my 3G signal reception. Which is the best? Omni or Yagi?
I would like to know the total price for the Yagi package for Huawei 3G modem.
Can you show me some pics of how to install these Yagi to my Huawei E173 USB 3G modem?

I'm afraid E173 can't attach ext antenna easily for now because it lack a ready external connector. There is a internal connector inside, and must add in a cable onto it to enable external antenna connectivity, but this sort cable not mature yet, still seeking for better cable quality. And the internal connector of E173 unknown yet, unless u open up all the housing to view the pcb, but this will void the warranty.

it is better to use 3G directional yagi to shoot far away as outside your room also no good 3G coverage.

900/2100 this matter must ask your local representative.

if 900MHz only got up to 10dbi directional, but the matter still your 3g modem not easy enough. if can, get huawei e1762/e160 that kind which got external connector ready to add in antenna.

omni antenna and omni-directional antenna is same thing, just usually ppl ignore to speak the long "omni-directional" technical wording.

directional antenna is what you use now, different from omni or omni-directional.

RSSI improved from -85dbm to -67dbm !!! biggrin.gif
Speed increased from 2.76Mbps to 3.36Mbps !!! rclxm9.gif
Ping latency improved from 168ms to 137ms !!! thumbup.gif

if you got plenty casual time ,u can try adjusting the direction, while u manage make it close to cell tower, your speed / signal level would improve more.

I need a 3G Yagi antenna & special connector to Huwei modem E1762 of MAXIS. What should I do? Will you quote for these to me?

I usually use GPS to go somewhere like your place that means you should give me the exact your address to conform to any GPS device.

Give me your address and business hour and I will come over you!

please don't, Wifi is 2.4GHz frequency, 3G is 2.1GHz frequency (some said celcom in rural area use 900MHz), so cannot mix using....

however there is special type Dual-band antenna which support frequency range 800-900MHz and 1700-2500MHz, this special type antenna you can use for both applications and even wimax 2.3GHz, but the gain value (dbi) only 7dbi to 10dbi.

i already got one tested last saturday, not positng the picture yet.

My self-built wifi cantenna which conforms to 2450MHZ lose the Yagi sold here, found after today's purchase. Because the frequency design of mine is inefficient to 3G bandwidth. As having expected, this Yagi produces what should do. But I can understand why we can not easily buy signal collector in Malaysia while the market need is so high.....

At first Coolstore looked suspicious but today everything settled. Malaysian merchants should be more clear and open to users if they want to collect more money online.

Added on February 25, 2011, 12:18 amMore efficient and automated solution will be Wilson's Mobilepro which is very popular in USA but most of Malaysian sellers don't know this. This solve 3G and cell phone signal both automatically only with USD$18.

haha, introducing lucca our korean friend to all lym malaysian ....

this is the first time i met foreigner through selling in lowyat.net...

there are lots reasons some malaysian merchants becoming so conservative/cautious about using international payment gateway because last time when the ebay.my launched back to years ago, many malaysian become victims of international buyers scam. long story too tired to tell further. so just let ly seller know if lucca ask for international payment gateway method such as paypal although he in malaysia, u are free of worry, he's not those well-known african online scammers.

malaysia 3G is using 2100MHz now, and in rural area just started in 900MHz range. That's y your cantenna 2450MHz not work out for 3G here. Browse Wilson's Mobilepro , this signal booster support 824-894 MHz / 1850-1990 MHz, not suitable for malaysia 3G as well, ideal for US AT&T. Yup, malaysian really rarely use signal booster for cellular, maybe for health concern, haha.

### korean broadband achieving minimum 100Mbps, when malaysia can catch up? sweat.gif ###

Hi, I have got Huawei E173, can pm me the price for the antenna + the required cable to connect to E173. If possible pls pm me the connection also, thanks.
*
sorry to tell for usb modem w/o external connector , like e1550/1552/173, the cable solution still not mature yet for now.

if urgent i suggest change your 3g modem to e1762 or other modem with ready external connector. you can sell off e173 to subsidies getting e1762.

this yagi antenna use rp-sma connector cable as usually seen.

then look at which brand/models 3g modem in use by users, plug in connector converter or pigtail cable to the 3g modem to connect to yagi antenna's rp-sma cable.

E220 don't have any external connector right? then cann't use external 3g antenna yet as the cable solution for 3g modem w/o external connector not mature yet.

urm, were u just sign up with latest maxis plan which offer E1762 to users..

from march onwards, maxis change the bundled modem favour to E1762 (4 plan giving out E1762), only the only 1 cheapest plan still giving E1552 only.

So E1762 may back to hot pick modem in the market again. Also a good news to bb users.

wimax is using 2.3GHz in malaysia.

there is panel type antenna support 2.3GHz. Already 1 lowyat member ordered and tested that 14dbi panel 2.3GHz with his P1 DX-230 modem earilier this month, it works well to improve signal and stability (then no need potong again lah).

But user need to open the modem case and put in a cable first (very easy to plug in) to attach to the external panel antenna, so this would void the warranty of modem (if any).

havn't come across yagi type for 2.3GHz. 2.3GHz is not common frequency, so very few type antenna do cover this frequency. majority are for wifi 2.4GHz.

for wimax discussion, i may open another thread for it as here focused on 3G.

it is not always neccessary think about putting on top, if current position already get you good result then that mission already achieved. (need not always think about tv antenna position).

it already come in 2.5 meter. I chose 2.5m becoz i tested before to confirm its performance vs signal loss tolerance to 3G cell tower broadcasting capabilites. So extending over 2.5 meter sure will deteriote the signal level, putting on roof seems get you better position but with longer cable cause more signal loss too, may then seeing no improvement gain or unluckily signal drop ...

most feedback i got from previous buyers were that they just put at window area only already very good result. Their key success usage is point the 3G yagi closer to the cell tower direction will see improved signal (left/right/up adjust test a bit lah), so facing direction of antenna is more important then position of antenna.

there is one simple way "putting 3G antenna on roof" + "without extending the cable any longer" = use 3G router.

put 3G router within the cable length, you can wall hanging the 3G router easily as those router already provide hanging hole beneath the case.

so when you going out, just take out the 3G modem.
when you back to home, put the 3G modem to the router and attach in the antenna cable, simply like that. there are already a few members doing this way now.

that kind "universal adapter" is NO DIRECT CONNECT TO the 3g modem, it use some kind of signal relaying method, no better / efficient than any direct connector connecting setup, otherwise no value for 3G modem manufacturers come in nature design of an external connector for some of their 3g modem. You can perceive that kind Universal is a compromising alternative setup usage, but only direct connecting via hardware connector is the best for signal gain. When you got chance to connect via physical connector, definitely no need bother about that kind "universal" relaying.

There is another N converter variants version which causing some problem with 3g set up so i don't get those stock, would post some VS pictures illustrating the usage problem as I have both rp-sma and N connector version in hand.

Thanks dude.... I got the item and i test immediately... Test streaming RadioTime while driving from Jalan Ipoh back to Shah Alam using my Car PC was great.... no lag and the signal stays at 3G all the time.... signal drop total 4 times due to change station, before that was 31 times signal drop. It was a significant improvement.

Thumbs up for our bro bring us such a product into Malaysia Market. I know that some of the people might say this is china/taiwan product and can buy very cheap etc etc... but our fren here is selling at very resonable price... Pls support him...

that's the main point that should always have buyers attention.

It is so important for sellers to be able to source and differentiate A class product among so many A-B-C class products out there from CN/TW (must self-test it out before promoting any), rather than just aimed at getting substandard C class product to be able sell at C pricing to fight market (very tempting $$ and buyers like this). But under-performance stuffs equivalent to wasting money although cheaper, RM1 is still RM1.

hi, E1550 don't have a ready external connector outthere, it got an internal connector, but the cable solution for that kind not mature yet, so i don't recommend any.

no, that is not dual-band panel.

dual band 3G in malaysia here means support 2100MHz and latest 900MHz 3G. dual band antenna means there are 2 antennas built inside, each antenna support a high gain for a range of frequency.

mine is 9dbi for 900MHz, 10dbi for 2100MHz - dual antenna inside.

mxsteven was the first purchaser of this dual band 3g antenna in lowyat forum.

ohhh mine is dual band hahahahaha i did not notice lolssss....

The reception is great....

This is how i test. Run Radiotime and stream watever radio u wan. I drive from Shah Alam sek28 to Jalan Ipoh.
Total disconnection 36 times.

After receiving the antenna, i use it immediately and put inside my car boot. I run again the Radiotime streaming back to Shah Alam Sec28.
Total Disconnection 5 times.

I am using Maxis Huawei E1762.

what antenna socket is ? the huawei converter? if broken either you know diy soldering or get a new replacement. if still connected with signal means still working/contacted, the pin inside no broken then is fine.

if i got extra converter stock, then can sell it separately.

and remember to use 3g antenna only (2.1GHz), not wifi antenna (2.4GHz). from past experience i noticed many users thinking of antenna (omni/directional) outer looking quite similarily then can use interchangebly, actually no gain. just as 3g antenna also useless for wimax 2.3GHz.

brief info for u:
a true dual band antenna means there are 2 antenna built-in, each antenna responsible to provide a gain value (dbi) for a specific range of frequency (MHz). so it is IMPOSSIBLE for 1 antenna alone can provide 1 same high gain dbi figure for 2 or more aparted frequency range (xxxMHz vs xxxxMHz) or even say can cover from low to high frequency with a same high gain value, that is misleading tech trick/biz trick that many of such info seen in ebay site.

this dual band antenna is panel type which consisted of 2 panel antenna insides - one for 10dbi @ 2100MHz and another 9dbi @ 900MHz.

since its size slightly bigger than 14dbi wifi panel (but still a book size), so it can't accomodate 2 higher dbi panel inside, impossible to do so because of space (panel antenna size correlation with dbi effect, higher dbi must be using bigger panel size).. unless extend the antenna diameter to as big as sth like 19" tv viewing screen size than only got room to put in 2 units of higher dbi panel inside... then it no more portable and too heavy loh ... then ppl complain not portable/easy handling then ... end user expectation(s) make manufacturer headache...

although lower dbi but it offer wider coverage angle compare to yagi antenna, means wider area to catch signal from diverse direction. yagi 16dbi is 30degree (horizontal/vertical). this dual band: gain: 9dbi @ 900MHz
coverage: (vertical) 55 degree; (horizontal) 77 degree; gain: 10dbi @ 2100MHz
coverage: (vertical) 47 degree; (horizontal) 58 degree

more importantly it is really provide 2 high gain value for 2 frequency range with 2 antenna inside. And we don't know very clear yet if maxis/celcom will run dual band on parallel or just use 900MHz in city area by discarding 2100MHz, in any case this dual band antenna won't be a waste of money in future.

ZTE MF190 is the one 7.2Mbps bundled by U-mobile, right?

but it is not having external antenna connector, so 'very hard' to use (for this type models, need to open up the casing and look inside what connector available inside, if same connector with huawei 1550 etc, the pigtail cable for that purpose is not mature yet, not recommending any)

hi,

yes, i do have wimax antenna now.

You are correct, it is not difficult to connect to wimax antenna to wimax devices.

For Redtone wimax (operate in east malaysia) devices will be simplest (good news to our sarawak/sabah friends).

For P1 wimax modem also not difficult, just open casing, 'attach' in a cable, not soldering required, so can be removed any time if one wanna sell off/return modem to P1.

For Yes modem , i havn't see its internal board before, so hopefully you already open the case, if so , pls take clear pictures of the circuit boards insides , hopefully it is also as easy as with P1 modem. I pm u my email add, so u can attach the pic to my email.

keneng79, this is a very good question.

Better replied from 2 angle : antenna technical and the 3g frequency pros/cons.

The so-called dual band 3G operation is going to use low frequency 900MHz and high frequency 2100MHz.

Antenna technical - got high gain for dual band 900MHz+2100MHz by 1 antenna alone?
===========

1) Since 900MHz and 2100MHz are 2 far away separated frequency range. Pro Antenna factory enginneer said it is not possible now to provide a super high gain value for that both 2 frequency range by an antenna alone.

It is now available at lower gain, ie around 10dbi to cover these dual bands 900MHz ~ 2100MHz.

High gain such as 16dbi or above available for specific frquency in order to provide powerful gain just for that specific spectrum, so we can see high gain for 900MHz range alone or high gain for 2100MHz range alone, but not combined in 1 yet.

p/s: ppl may has been misleaded by so many misleading product info listed in ebay or other sites, which most these antenna seller are from china/hk. They wrote 900MHz - 2100MHz (carefully look at the symbol - means To) with a high gain value in product description, that really a duping manner to sell! (last time i did chat with 1 seller, and asked tripple times for that confirmation, then the seller finally admitted the high gain is for 2100MHz only, claimed typo error in web site (really? typo error or duping technique?) i took the screenshot of that chat conversation, haha whistling.gif

If that kind antenna made out of US MIT or DoD, then i more believe that is a breakthrough invention antenna.
if i not mistaken, 1 of our local university is embarking on project to produce wide frequency high gain antenna, don't know how now.

3G dual band frequency - 900MHz and 2100MHz ?
===============================

1) 3G are run in 2100MHz high frequency in original design, because higher frequency can carry more data, then can provide faster speed.

2) But then they also started run in low frequency 900MHz since this year by maxis/celcom. (started already or not, i no sure). It seems Digi and U-Mobile not follow suit, they keep using single 2100MHz.

3) High / Low Frequency Pros & Cons:

Higher frequency can carry more data, so can provide faster speed, but they weak in terms of indoor signal penetration (indoor signal weak)

Lower frequency carry less data, so provide slower speed, but they good at indoor signal penetration (indoor signal stronger)

So it is understandable why U-Mobile still stick to 2100MHz and now provide latest 42Mbps plan.

Some querries/doubt i heard against the 900MHz 3G band were:
a) yes, 900MHz do provides better indoor signal, but carry slower speed, is that still called 3G or GSM plan instead? is that duping? (making ppl see "good 3G signal" in house but instead running at 900MHz?)
b) if 900MHz can provide 3G speed, why 3G was implemented in 2100MHz initially? if so, we should already can get 3G in GSM 900MHz era, why need third-generation 3G 2100MHz?
c) how do i avoid using 900MHz 3G spectrum and keep using 2100MHz?

For these questions, better find answer from 3G pro. to answer.

But for ©, i think either:
i) get 2100MHz 1 band only 3G modem.
ii) set manually in modem system program (if this option available)
ii) if dual band is an auto switching techniques, ie if modem sense 900MHz signal stronger will switch to it, then put on high gain 2100MHz antenna to make 2100MHz signal strong so that no swictching to 900MHz when come to indoor. but just my guessing only.

My house area, if i use 3G only for my phone. The system normally will choose 0-1 signal bar tower more than the 2 signal bars tower.
Do you think that possibly that the 0-1 signal is actually 900mhz and the 2 signals is the 2100mhz?
I am using maxis.

if your phone HSDPA/WCDMA supported - 900 and 2100MHz,

and can set manually 900 or 2100, then can know.

if no manual settings available , hard to know.

or borrow phone just support 2100MHz.

or maybe due to too many users packed at tower2, so it auto go to less users tower1. (same frequency)

Take note: hmm.gif
* 3G is using 2.1GHz frequency, WiFi is 2.4GHz, so WiFi antenna not for 3G, 3G antenna not for WiFi!
* Directional antenna = means 1 way straight line long range coverage!
* For (USB 3G modem) Huawei, Seirra, etc; (AC-powered 3G modem) ZTE MF-600, Huawei B932 etc
* Put it indoor or outdoor, no problem!

Tested the antenna today. RSSI strenghten by >18dB. DL speed improved 10~15%...E/I (BER) <-11dB where previously without antenna EBR is almost -20dB. Signal is stable with better EBR means less distortion and less CRC check. If you are using wireless BB at home, directional antenna should be considered...

just check online, ya, zte latest mf680 42Mbps do support external antenna with ext antenna jack read there, what a surprise! drool.gif

it seems now huawei and zte reform their products back to the era with ext antenna jack built in instead of for cutting-cost and simply take that away .. cry.gif (maybe they also heard the voice of dongle users, not always use it on-the-road one ..)

huawei E353 42mbps support ext antenna.

then zte MF60 MiFi 21mbps support.
now zte MF680 MF680 42mbps also support, good ! (might consider getting this highest speed modem for myself too, then no need change modem again ...)

*
3G wifi router such as from TP-Link / Aztech are using usb 3G modem to receive 3g signal from 3g base station, therefore router itself do not receive any 3G signal. Then they turn 3g signal into wifi signal for local wireless access.

Thus the omni antenna you seen on 3G router are actually WIFI ANTENNA for wifi broadcasting, not 3G antenna. 3g antenna not work on that side.

To use 3G antenna to receie 3g signal, one must connect it to actual 3G receiver device, ie:
a) 3g modem (usb/pc card etc) - then u can plug in 3g modem with attached antenna to 3g router for sharing.
or
b) 3g gateway modem router such as Huawei B660

* 3g gateway modem router is all-in-one built-in 3g modem + router + wifi (if any). the external antenna socket seen on them are for 3g antenna, not wifi instead. they use internal wifi antenna.

it is omni antenna.

if u always on the move, the build-in omni antenna in ur modem already do the job very well. external 3g omni antenna may not yield any significant differences compared to the built-in antenna as signal polarization area by internal omni antenna is wider, external omni antenna is focused on horizontally coverage (like a donut shape, not a ball shape).

that one can order. it is a wide bands antenna, so the gain is lower: 9dbi for 900MHz ~800MHz. 10dbi for above 1700MHz.

i think better u keep stock than direct import from china.

This panel antenna have better signal reception than yagi type.
Tested with zte mf600 + digi 3g 2100mhz. Got tower 15km far away never get this tower cell id with yagi. 10dbi multiband panel antenna beat 16dbi yagi antenna.
cable is 1 meter RG58 with rp-sma connector.
Antenna mounting bracket not included.

fak skynet.

for wireless technology, it really depends to the particular point of place that subject to different environment factors.

so ur place warrants the use of panel type to get even better result than yagi type. but it can't be conclusion reference data.

let say in wifi, i have seen different ppl saying differently bcoz we all in different place. some said panel sak, yagi good, some said yagi sak, panel good, some even said parabolic sak, panel good, wahaha, really can hear a lot of stories. that's y there is no 'best' antenna in the world, only got 'most ideal' antenna to best suit an user's existing environment. never try never know which is better.

if raining & storm heavily, 3G wireless connection already get interrupted no line or very poor connection if still can connect, better take a break lah, dont' go against the nature force. disconnect the cable easily temporarily if u concerned. plus, if u want and know how, can always get extra ligtning arrestor too.

from what i understand about a yagi antenna building structure, the main beam and individual oscillator is having grounding effect that discharging static electric, so connected device which having grounding through wall AC sockets would lead this ok.

anyway, if those widely seen tv bigger size antenna with 'steel material' didn't bring out problem in ur neigborhood, then this aluminium smaller antenna would be just fine.

if u live in condominium at higher place such as above 15 floors, and still concerned about this, then u can use the panel multibands antenna instead of yagi.

no, different radio frequency, no high gain result.

3G frequency: 2100MHz or 2.1GHz

wifi frequency: 2400MHz or 2.4GHz

wimax malaysia frequency: 2300MHz or 2.3GHz

lte 2013 frequency:2600MHz or 2.6GHz

tv analog frequency: <1000MHz or <1GHz

all different radio frequency. high gain antenna are made towards specific frequency.

What's the new antenna price + connector converter + shipping via PosLaju to Kuching, Sarawak?

I want to place a booking, let me know when it's available.

I might as well get an E1762 with antenna port somewhere, still using E1552 now... ordered one from andrewdavid

At my place, the tower with 3G is >20km away. nearby towers all EDGE.
The 3G signal cannot be detected at all with handphone or modem. It is detected through Siretta SW3G023 cellular signal tester.

Can this antenna connect to amplifier? the antenna will be 30ft on top of roof, using 50ft RG6 cable to connect to amplifier, then direct from amplifier to modem (huawei E761)

3G 2100mhz or 3G 900mhz or both ?

google huawei E761 got nothing.
RG6 cable not suitable for wifi/3G. RG6 cable design for satelite with 75 ohm impedance.
50ft low loss coax is too much & expensive.

Aiyak, it is 900mhz only. Remote area all 900mhz.
2100 also got, another opposite direction towards town, also > 20km. This one immediately blocked by hill in front of my house.

50ohm cable is better because the amplifier also 50ohm, but RG6 still can use. RG58 is 50ohm but high losses. LMR-400 veli expensive, want to buy also the shop donno what are u talking about.

fast reply from fat16.

use 50ohm cable, antenna 50ohm, device 50ohm, then all working fine. (different ohm has a risk of damaging transmission device, such as the case got ppl use RG59 tv cheap cable for wifi high power device, weeks later the device wireless unit spoiled)

i don't know ur amplifier is truely amplifier or repeater, how many Watt boosted and for what frequency (GSM amplifier?) So dont' know how much u can afford to 'loss' in the cable transmission.

RG58 50ohm 0.77dbi loss/meter: 4 meter already exceed 3db loss, transmission power drop half, every 4 meter drop half power again... 50 feet is around 16 meter? can't use.

LMR200 50ohm 0.55dbi loss /meter.
RG8 50ohm 0.22dbi loss/meter, 16meter 3.52db loss, ok lah drop half one time if ur amplifier really got power.
both can customise order. if ur amplifier is an outdoor type (sustain rain...), then no need waste the signal, use short cable.

this antenna is 2100MHz, not 900MHz. u sure ur place 3G available in 900MHz (WCDMA/HSDPA?) else i order the panel multiband antenna for u, 10dbi for 2100MHz range, 9dbi for 900MHz range. mutliband is no as high gain as dedicated frequency antenna lah.

Yes 3G here detected is broadcasted at 900Mhz. This only happens in hutan. Town all use 2100Mhz.

I have multiband antenna, 10dbi for 2100Mhz, 7dbi for 900Mhz, about 9dbi for 1800Mhz, 75 Ohm (...) . Look for >22dbi parabolic but cannot find in that frequency. Yagi is the 2nd best after parabolic.

The amplifier is Wilson 811901, 900/2100Mhz. direct connect, indoor. use in car also can. 50 Ohm.

The Huawei E761 modem got Celcom logo one, got router function. Got port for normal house telephone so can make call.

RG8 cable got people make mah? or LMR 400 even better. I get RG6 because the antenna is 75Ohm. Only after that i realize the amplifier only 50Ohm, calat..

all should use 50ohm, don't take chance of risk.

RG8 can order, LMR400 too expensive due to high US patent fees, ppl don't like its pricing. multiband panel antenna 50ohm also can order. order in one shipment.

it could have be loosen during international delivery (as i did checking before delivery), should be in the box somehidden corner or stick with the bubble wrap?... else, could have been opened by customs inspection to view got anything 'hidden' in the 'tube' then didn't put it back...

if really can't find them in the box, then just get any compatible rubber cap, regardless the shape...

e173 cannot use external antenna directly. you need solder a cable into the modem motherboard to enable external connectivity. of course either do u urown or ask someone solder for u. i can provide ipx cable for that purpose.

use connector converter.

for metropolitan wireless technology such as 3G, wimax that use base station at high rising building to broadcast signal downward to land, it is little effectiveness to use again external omni type antenna in this kind environment. Use directional type antenna to get best result bcoz it focus to one direction, and u freely adjust to any direction u want, especially able to face upwards. Omni type antenna just stick to horizontal line expansion only.

when i got time, i draw those gif animation demo graph, then no one would have doubt which type antenna best use in 3G or wimax wireless technolgy environment.

all should use 50ohm, don't take chance of risk.

RG8 can order, LMR400 too expensive due to high US patent fees, ppl don't like its pricing. multiband panel antenna 50ohm also can order. order in one shipment.

lol... after spending >10k for many experiments, finally manage to get 3G at my place. The 3G tower is about 30-40km away. Signal is too weak that not detactable by any handphone or modem.

Confirmed using 3G 900MHz. Huawei E961 Celcom 3G modem router is not able to capture the signal because it does not support WCDMA 900. Using USB modem like E1762, E160E can.

A good antenna will help significantly to get or improve the signal. Amplifier will further help but it is not a must.

I am not using the antenna in this post, but the antenna i use is only 8dbi and already able to give very satisfied result, so imagine the antenna in this post brows.gif . The amplifier boosts another 10dB.

LMR400 cable i ordered from US will come next week. It may help to improve the signal a little bit but not noticeable i think. I use 75/50 Ohm converter.

Signal strength reported in TP-Link MR3420 router is only 48% but the speed is satisfactory and the connection is stable. The antenna is 30ft on top of the roof.

lol not 3G alone, phone signal booster also (different amplifier). Do the same at home and office, so the cost is for 4 set equipment. Plus wastage because of experiment fail all together got 10k.

No choice, no internet life very difficult. Compared to driving 2 hours to the town to get 3G and then another 2 hours back, i think this worth the effort.

Eh bro, you need to mention in your post the antenna u are selling does NOT support 3G 900Mhz. Otherwise some orangutan like me after buy cannot use.

if can solder back, then just solder it back as i not really understand what u situation.

cable from the 0 part of the yagi to the end of rp-sma connector is made in a set, not having spare part.

pertama, sabar. terutamanya pengguna kali pertama guna directional antenna.

kedua: pastikan semua connector, converter pasang baik baik, tak longar.

ketiga: biar ia menhadapi ruang buka, seperti tingkap yang buka (kalau letak indoor). jangan menhadapi dinding lagi atau apa-apa blocking dlm building lagi.

keempat, baru start tukar arah supaya tengok signal drp arah mana lebih baik, so itu lah tempat base station yang anda sedang connecting.

tips: jangan connect ke 900MHz (jika guna maxis/celcom 3g dan terdapat base station 900MHz sana) dgn antenna 2100MHz. hanya higher frequency (2100MHz) yang mampu bawa highest speed.

tukar sim telco lain tengok perbezaan.

Hi there..kinda interested..but wanna ask a bit for clarification...
I'm using Huawei E1762 modem and using maxis with problem 3 and 4...
I stay in rural area and my line is only HSPA 1 or 2 bar, speed is slow and kinda unstable...
Does this antenna can help to boost my speed?
I'm currently staying in hostel and coming home every week, so does this antenna easy to carry along? Does it have to put outside like TV antenna?

Pm me the details and price yea..thx smile.gif

not going to use with phone. not pair with router (3g router is using wifi antenna for wifi broadcasting, they are not using 3g antenna. 3g antenna pair with 3g modem or 3g gateway (modem+router all in one device) only.)

this 3G antenna is for 3G usage only: frequency band 2100MHz.

Wimax malaysia use 2300MHz, different band.

5/6/2012 Metteor-Link 3G yagi antenna just sold out, being restock. Taking preorder booking now with deposit to reserve new coming stock!,

Products Listing:
-------------------
Product 1: 18dbi 3G directional yagi - (Metteor-Link) 2100MHz (product details see below)
Product 2: Dual-band 9dbi & 10dbi Panel directional antenna - 2100MHz & 900MHz.
Old product 3 (phase out): 16dbi 3G directional yagi
=========
New Product  1
=========

New! Metteor-Link
18dbi 3G Yagi Directional Antenna
2.5 meter cable
RP-SMA connector COMPATIBLE to 3g connector converter!!

* No need compare Metteor-Link price with other no brand / unknown source antenna. No apple vs rambutan. Different factory with different quality product. Higher quality always costs higher, this general rule always applicable. You won't go to Samsung store ask for CSL phone price right? At least, now you got a chance to get better product locally. Buy 1 time done better than u buy cheaper/lower quality antenna then wanna change again because of dissatisfaction, that will be wasting more money indeed.

user posted image

Take note:  hmm.gif
* 3G is using 2.1GHz frequency, WiFi is 2.4GHz, so WiFi antenna not for 3G, 3G antenna not for WiFi! (DIFFERENT RADIO FREQUENCY & WAVE LENGTH)
* Directional antenna =  means 1 way straight line long range coverage, just like a torch light!
* For (USB 3G modem) Huawei, ZTE, Sierra, etc; (MiFi) ZTE MF60-62, Huawei E583c, etc (3G Gateway) Huawei B660, ZTE MF-600, BigPond etc
* Put it indoor or outdoor, no problem!
==================================
  smile.gif  How to apply Metteor-Link 3G Yagi Antenna:
==================================

(1) Connect to USB 3G modem:

a) models with ready external connector slot: connect 3G yagi antenna via a connector converter/pigtail cable.

(Huawei) E122, E156, E156G, E160, E160E, E160G, E1612, E161, E169, E176, E176, E1762, E196G, E1820, E1823, E182e, EC321, E353, E367, E372, EC881E, E600, E612, E618, E620, E621, E630, E660A, E660, K3520, K4505, UMG 181, UMG 1691, UMG1691, UMG181, UMG1831.
(Sierra) 597, 885, 888, 889, 305, 306, 307, 308, 309, 598
(ZTE) MF633+, MF633BP+, MF645, MF668, MF668, MF680

user posted image

** Note: with this connector converter / pigtail cable in hand, in future you can use any rp-sma connector 3g antenna, no longer need to buy specific Huawei / ZTE / Seirra 3g antenna!
b) models without external connector slot: these kind modem got a testing connector inside, that is not called ipx or mmcx connector or else, don't misunderstand. There is no real mature converter cable solution yet for this kind testing connector, alternatives can put on but might be impractical or not durable/not permanent.
The ideal solution is still by soldering a cable into the pcb board after taking away the internal antenna. You can get ipx cable for this soldering purpose. I provide ipx cable but i don't guide u how, u can always browse online see how ppl solder into respective modem model.

E.g.: Huawei E1550; E1552; E173, ZTE MF190 etc.

user posted image
(2) Connect to Desktop 3G Gateway (3G modem+router+wifi all-in-one device):

ZTE MF600: connect via connector converters.
Huawei B660 : connect via a connector converter. (Maxis bundle this model for Home 3G package)
Huawei B932 : direct connection via rp-sma connector, no need any connector converter.
Huawei B970 : connect via a connector converter.
Netcomm BigPond 3g9wb/3g10WVR: connect via a connector converter.

user posted image
(3) Connect to MiFi device: some latest MiFi models got external antenna connector.

ZTE MF60/ Huawei E583C etc : connect via connector converter

user posted image
(4) Connect to PCMCIA notebook 3G card: connect via connector converter
Sierra Air Card 305, Air Card 402, Air Card 501, Air Card 502, Air Card 503
=======================================================
icon_idea.gif  Why need external 3G antenna? What benefits? What problems solved?
=======================================================

Problem 1: Weak 3G signals (type A) = inside building 3g signal is weak, just outside building signal turns good.
Solution: external 3G omni antenna or directional antenna.

user posted image

*** But 3G directional antenna capable providing more solutions than omni antenna, see below bruce.gif ***

Problem 2: Weak 3G signals (type B) = inside/outside building also weak (still got 3G signal), but other area/taman got good 3G signals. not fair right?
Solution: external 3G directional antenna which can 'target' long range to 'pull in' 3g signals !

user posted image
Problem 3: No 3G signals = not within 3G coverage area,  or out of reach 3G (3G blind spot: staying in high building/apartments/in alley between houses...etc) or always forced switching to EDGE mode ....
Solution: external 3G directional antenna which can 'target' long range to 'pull in' 3g signals !

user posted image
Problem 4: Slow speed = ever encounter the signal level seems good but the speed is slow? This is bcoz too many users connecting to one cell tower at one time, too congested.
Solution: pointing the external 3G long range directional antenna to different direction, hoping it connect to the other 3G base station  (if u know the distribution location of base stations will minimise effort). 3G would 'auto' connect itself to the less congested tower whenever it can detect, but cannot do so by manually select as if the case in selecting wifi ssid.

user posted image
Expectation 5: Connecting Singapore 3G? = this thread mentioned it is possible to connect to singapore 3G if one stay near the shore area. By using 18dbi long range directional antenna, there will be higher chances to connect remotely and achieving better line stability condition.
user posted image
(2) to (5) can't be achieved by using 3G omni antenna.
~ omni antenna = a circular horizontal coverage area, like a donut.
~ directional antenna = one straight line long range coverage area, like a torch light.

signal level: -XXdbm (the lower figure the better signal level)

your modem is running at 2100MHz.

forget multi-band or 900MHz, higher frequency band = higher speed. lower frequency band = lower speed. the ideal band for fastest 3G is still 2100MHz. no one wanna pay 3G fees but instead not using 3G entitled speed, especially HSPA+.

your place signal is no stable based on ur illustration. using external 3G antenna 2100MHz is an option.

my area 2100mhz great signal below -70db
but due to student area and 2100mhz is primary frequency so basically majority is using this, causing very bad speed and latency

i tried 900mhz speed not bad but signal worst
recommendation, should i get a 900mhz antenna? i can get 2mbps+ with 900mhz very bad signal
is getting antenna, improving signal improve the speed?

my case is 2100mhz can get 6mbps top using maxis postpaid rm68 + e367
but only on weekends when ppl go home, not @ this area
weekdays, very unstable using 2100mhz 2mbps or lower sometimes cant use too slow

first, talk about theory>

1) higher frequency band = carry more data = higher speed
lower frequency band = carry less data = lower speed

(pratically true, as what u saw)

2) higher frequency band = weaker indoor penetration signal /no far enough
lower frequency band = better indoor penetration signal / further than higher frequency band

(practically what being seen is sth on the contrary, just what u said, 900MHz even worsen signal)

the ideal band still 2100MHz for 3G, especially we now already on high speed HSPA+ or DC=HSPA+ network, i don't think ppl wanna pay expensive 3G $$ fees but using lower speed band. improve 2100MHz reception power with external antenna 'to compete' with others rather than 'surrender' to lower speed band.

yes i understand sir
i studied networking
my signal is consider great d, but it was too crowded
all i wan is stable 2-4mbps
and 900mhz certainly can do that

i need to know if i use omni antenna (im getting around -90 or worst using 900mhz) can the signal be improved?
i dun wan yagi, it was hard to apply this especially i m in rented condo (offcampus rental)
i had a 2.4ghz yagi before, i know how hard for me to use for my case

so just wondering if omni antenna can do the job

external omni antenna for 3g? it may return u with reversed expected result.

since u already have basics, consider this scenario:

where is signal source? 3g signal source is come from 3g base station. where is 3g base station? 3g base station sit at high rise building, probably not at same floor with you (same horizontal line).

how higher dbi omni antenna works? omni antenna coverage area is a donut shape (vertically not 360 degree), not a ball shape (vertically 360 degree). The higher dbi of omni antenna = the flatten of the donut size, ie the horizontal space is extended, but the vertical space is dropping.

now matching the above 2 into a single picture, what can be seen?

if signal from base station at high rise building already getting weak near your spot, using a higher gain external omni antenna (work in a flat donut coverage shape) e.g 10dbi may lead you to even lower signal level compared with internal built-in 2dbi omni antenna since 2dbi omni has widen vertical area. so using external 3g omni antenna is no guaranteed to get improved result, it got high chances of showing lower signal level, depends on circumtances. so till today i still don't take any external 3g omni antenna stock bcoz no guaranteed result.

still, the directional antenna the ideal choice for these wireless technology (3G, wimax, LTE) where the signal source is come from high rise building. It cannot be apple to apple comparison to home wifi scenario.

for smaller size, and multi band purpose, u can consider the directional panel with up to 10dbi effect. the stock can be ordered.

for 1550 u need to solder a cable into the pcb board and take out the internal antenna, if u already know how-to, i provide ipx cable for soldering job.

3g antenna are direct connect to 3g modem, not to router function only device like tplink 3220.

Hi,

This house is located just outside of populated town center with 3G and 2G coverage but very weak signal at one to two bar or sometimes no signal at all.
The town center is about 10Km away and has HSPA coverage.
Do your think this 18dbi yagi antenna can pull the HSPA signal from nearby stations from the town area ?

wireless tech always sth that cannot be mere paper / theoritically assurance stuff.

At the time being, already got weak 3G or sometimes turn to 2G signal. Using an external directional 3G antenna to improve the signal reception and achieving stable 3G connection. this should be first goal.

If that station u connected actually hspa upgraded (last time can't see bcoz too weak), now should can see the hspa+ sign with a hspa+ modem (not old modem) + external 3g directional antenna.

If your place is less of blocking object (the place u stay and use 3G) even open view, that will be best. to our sarawak/sabah friends, 10km~20km to them is just normal condition. since the place less blocking, base station broadcasting power (transmission) + 3G yagi 18dbi directional antenna (reception) work well.

it is a question of u want convenient or want result?

want result - directional type 3g antenna (whether yagi shape, panel shape... panel will be small and lighweight, booksize)

want convenient - just bring your 3g usb modem around, it is built in with omni antenna 2 dbi sth, there is no need add in external antenna if you always on the move.

(omni antenna coverage area is a donut shape, NOT a ball shape. lower omni dbi = thicker but short donut; higher omni dbi = flatten but longer donut.

3g signal source come from base station, base station sit at high rise building to broadcast downwards, not same floor with u. using higher dbi of omni antenna (with flatten donut coverage shape) may return the opposite result of what u have expected (especially if u at ground area). this is not same case with wifi scenario where the router always sit at same floor or 1 or 2 floor gap. that's y till today i don't bring in any omni 3g antenna bcoz of no guaranteed gain on every situation)

1) reference testing, can check speedtest.net

2) more accurate finding, can use a downloading program a download sth and monitor the real time download speed.

ok, this is good enquiry example that telling the modem model first, so the process will be smoother.

hope others members/buyers also follow suit - tell ur modem model.

For (many) members who don't prefer publicly expose such info, just pm me in private and tell me ur modem model. AND PM ALWAYS THE BETTER WAY FOR YOUR PRIVACY CONCERN AND NOT BEING DISTURBED BY OTHERS WITH OWN AGENDA. (click the PM button at bottom left hand panel under my nickname)
