Lone Nepali Soldier Defends Potential Rape Victim Against 40 Men

Whoa...holy cow! Every once in a while someone in the world comes along and reminds us what a true hero really looks like. A 35 year-old Gurkha soldier named Bishnu Shrestha was riding a train when he suddenly found himself in the middle of a massive robbery. 40 men armed with knives, swords and guns stormed the train and began robbing the passengers.

Bishnu kept his peace while the gang snatched cell phones, jewelry and cash from other riders. But then, the thugs grabbed the 18 year-old girl sitting next to him and forcefully stripped her naked. Before the bandits could rape the poor girl in front of her helpless parents, Bishnu decided he had enough.

“The girl cried for help, saying ´You are a soldier, please save a sister´,” Shrestha recalled. “I prevented her from being raped, thinking of her as my own sister.”

Kota Kinabalu open to enemy attack[U]

KOTA KINABALU: The federal government’s clandestine move to turn Kota Kinabalu into a naval city has angered its citizens who fear for their safety.

According to several local inhabitants here, there was “no notice of such a decision and no public feedback was sought”.

The Sapangar Bay Naval Base, just north of Kota Kinabalu, is said to house Malaysia’s two offensive attack submarines that can lay sea mines and fire missiles besides sinking ships with torpedoes.

Jesselton, the former name for Kota Kinabalu, was totally destroyed by bombs during the Second World War except for its damaged clock tower and two other buildings.

Many of the city’s inhabitants and historians are concerned that the secretive decison to stack such weapons would endanger the community.

Said Amran, a lecturer with a tertiary college, here, said: “The positioning of the submarines just south across from Cam Ranh Bay Naval Base in Vietnam and the Spratly Islands South China Sea lane choke point may expose Kota Kinabalu to military strikes in the event hostilities break out (against territories) which Malaysia is also claiming.

“Also, Vietnam has reportedly ordered more than six submarines from Russia… it is cause for concern.”

Vulnerable to attack

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, Malaysia’s longest-serving Defence Minister, was the architect of many of the procurement of military hardwares.

In addition to the Kota Kinabalu naval base, Malaysia has a lagoon-sheltered base and airfield on one of the bigger islands.

Yusof, a retired serviceman upset with the move, said any enemy would seek to first destroy the base.

“Any enemy would want to put out of action any mine-laying and missile-launching vessels by destroying their bases and supporting facilities including food and water supply sources.

“We cannot assume that such a situation will not arise…” he said.

Underscoring his concern is the fact that Malaysia is among six countries staking a claim on the Spratly Islands.

Other countries staking their claim on the oil- and gas-rich Spratly Islands are China, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines and Brunei.

All except Brunei have a military presence among the 45 islands.

The basis of Malaysia’s stake on the Spratlys is its close proximity to Sabah.

Malaysia to Join in Cobra Gold

Malaysia will for the first time take part in the annual Cobra Gold joint military exercise this year, in which nearly 10,000 soldiers of six countries will participate, a military source said.

Cobra Gold 2011, the 30th of its kind, will be carried out between Feb 7-18 in northern Thailand under the jurisdiction of the 3rd Army Region.

The ceremony to launch the exercise will be held in Chiang Mai and co-chaired by Gen Pirun Phaewpolsong, the deputy supreme commander, and Judith Cefkin, deputy chief of mission at the United States embassy in Thailand.

A total of 9,536 soldiers of six countries will take part in the wargames -- 2,996 troops from Thailand, 5,900 from the US, 38 from Singapore, 54 from Japan, 304 from South Korea, and 13 from Malaysia.



Malaysia, formerly an observer, will join the exercise for the first time as a participant in the command post exercise (CPX).

Ten other countries will also take part in the multinational planning augmentation team (MPAT) training. They are Australia, France, Italy, Britain, China, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Nepal, India and the Philippines.

The exercise will be observed by military teams from China, India, Sri Lanka, Laos, Brunei, Russia, Mongolia, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and New Zealand.

According to the source, this year's Cobra Gold exercise has been moved forward from April-May to February to avoid summer heat , during which some US troops always suffer heatstroke. Moreover, the US wants Thai soldiers to be free to enjoy the Songkran celebrations in April.

The US troops to take part in the exercise are from the US Pacific Command (USPACOM).



In the last part of Cobra Gold 2011 there will be a landing exercise under live fire at Sattahip in Chon Buri province by Thai and US marines. The exercise is codenamed PHIBTRAEX.

There will also be a training exercise codenamed UNDERSEAL involving Thai and US sea-air-land-underwater demolition teams.

A major exercise using live ammunition will be held at Dan Lan Hoi district of Sukhothai province in the North.

Part of the exercise will also be held in the eastern provinces of Chon Buri and Rayong as well as in the Gulf of Thailand.

RM6bil approved for six patrol vessels

LUMUT: The government has agreed to allocate RM6bil to build six second generation patrol vessels for the Royal Malaysian Navy, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Saturday.

The construction of the ships would boost the economy while benefiting 632 vendor companies, he told reporters here after a briefing on the project.

"Thus, we will ensure that at least RM2bil of the allocation will benefit these vendor companies which are strategic partners of Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd," he added.

Ahmad Zahid said that he would himself monitor the progress of the project, due to start next year, and ensure that all concerned benefit from it and that there was no delay in paying the vendors.

He said that Boustead Naval Shipyard had constructed several new generation vessels for the RMN and shown itself to be on par with other ship builders in the world.

Ahmad Zahid also said the Lumut-Bagan Datoh coastal area here has been identified for a world-class shipyard to be developed over the next 10 to 20 years.

He said the defence industry, including shipping, had immense potential in the Asean region and now generated income of US$25bil (RM75bil) a year.

If Malaysia could attract at least 20 percent of the defence spending, US$5bil or RM15bil could be generated by companies in the country, he said.
