DPM Teo Offers Assistance in Response to the Earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand
Posted: 22 Feb 2011, 2048 hours (Time is GMT +8 hours)
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean has conveyed Singapore's condolences and offer of assistance to the New Zealand government and people as they grapple with the devastation of the earthquake in Christchurch.

In a telephone conversation with the New Zealand Minister of Defence Dr Wayne Mapp this afternoon, Mr Teo offered the assistance of 116 Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) regulars and full-time national servicemen to help with rescue operations and to provide humanitarian aid to victims of the earthquake. The servicemen, from Headquarters Guards, were participating in the annual bilateral exercise in Christchurch, codenamed Exercise Lion Walk, when the earthquake happened. The exercise has since stopped, and all SAF personnel are safe and accounted for.

The New Zealand authorities have accepted Singapore's offers of assistance. Besides the SAF team in New Zealand, the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) will be flying a 55-member Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) urban search and rescue team and a command team led by Colonel Melvyn Ong, Commander 7 Singapore Infantry Brigade, to assist in the disaster relief efforts. The Singapore contingent will depart from Paya Lebar Airbase in two RSAF C-130s and one KC-135 military aircraft early tomorrow morning.

Just sharing in here..

Ops Diaries - SAF in Afghanistan is a six-part series on the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF's) contributions to the multinational stabilisation and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan. Told through the eyes of video-journalist Mano from MINDEF Public Affairs, this series looks at the challenging conditions in which the teams operate and the difference they make to the lives of the people there.

Ops Diaries - SAF in Afghanistan (Trailer)

No Pain No Gain (Ops Diaries - SAF in Afghanistan Episode 1)
The room is dark, riddled with strobe lights and a cacophony of gunfire. A "soldier" bleeds profusely from multiple gunshot wounds and missing limbs. Your job? To save his life fast. This is just a slice of the pre-deployment training that our soldiers undergo before they are deployed to Afghanistan.

Remote Controlled (Ops Diaries - SAF in Afghanistan Episode 2)
A sudden gust of wind pushes the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) off course, but the pilot skilfully manoeuvres the aircraft back in place. Our UAV guys face more than just the harsh weather in Afghanistan. The high tempo of operations coupled with the tough operating conditions post a big challenge for the SAF UAV team operating in Tarin Kowt, Uruzgan.

Eagle Eye (Ops Diaries - SAF in Afghanistan Episode 3)
They work in a container of sorts, but despite the small office space, the internal UAV pilot and his team of two provide a critical surveillance blanket that generates real-time intelligence to front-line coalition forces through the night.

Rocket Racket (Ops Diaries - SAF in Afghanistan Episode 4)
They work in pairs in confined space that measures about two-arms length. Their eyes are constantly glued to computer screens that are speckled with coloured dots. For the layman, they're just colours. But for our Weapon Locating Radar team which is trained to decipher the dots, it means providing critical early warning for the Multinational Base in Tarin Kowt.

The Peace We Keep (Ops Diaries - SAF in Afghanistan Episode 5)
With its lush greenery and crystal-like streams, you'd probably think you're in Switzerland in summer. The SAF engineering team in Bamiyan faces a different kind of challenge here, one of culture and language as they put the finishing touches to a health clinic they've helped build for the people of Foladi Valley.

Making a Difference (Ops Diaries - SAF in Afghanistan Ep 6)
The paediatric clinic that was built a year ago has treated over 1,000 children so far and the number keeps growing. Meanwhile, the Shah Foladi Comprehensive Health Clinic is ready to be handed over to the locals. The new clinic is a fitting end to the SAF's operations in Bamiyan and a symbol of the difference they've made to the lives of the Afghan people.

Film-maker chronicles how S'pore soldiers are protecting their NATO friends and winning hearts and minds

by Paul Gilfeather

05:56 AM Feb 26, 2011

A FILM-MAKER is causing a stir on YouTube with a six-part series about Singapore troops serving in war-torn Afghanistan - the first such documentation by a local civilian.

Video journalist Mano Mahendran, 41, who is employed by the Ministry of Defence, travelled more than 6,000km to the NATO base at Tarin Kowt in the heart of the country.

He was tasked with making a series for cyberpioneerTV, highlighting the invaluable work being done by the men and women of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) as the international effort to stabilise the country continues.

Talking to WeekendToday as the final episode of the series Ops Diaries - SAF in Afghanistan was posted on Friday, Mr Mahendran admitted he was more than a little apprehensive about working in a country where scores of soldiers and journalists have been killed by insurgents.

In fact, Taliban fighters launched a rocket attack on Kandahar airfield the night he arrived at the base last October. Although well protected from the blast, it brought sharply into focus the threat which lurks around every corner.

He said: "It was simply a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It was the first time I had been in a combat zone and it was terrific to see how our guys are contributing. That is primarily what I wanted to show with my film. I wanted to pin-point what these troops are doing on the ground.

"You are always reading about the contribution made by troops from other NATO countries, but rarely do you hear about Singapore. I think there is also a sense that Singaporeans themselves undervalue the sacrifice being made on their behalf.

"When I interviewed commanders from, say, the American or Australian side it is amazing just how valued our soldiers are and they were only too happy to spell out for me the integral part Singapore forces play in day-to-day operations."

One team making a huge contribution to the mission in Afghanistan is Singapore's unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) outfit. The 52-man squad operates the 5.8-m Israeli-made drone, which provides surveillance and identifies targets for ground troops.

Mr Mahendran said that, within a week of taking up position at the base, the team had produced for NATO commanders a 99-page report on how to improve UAV operations to gain maximum impact against the enemy.

"They were all amazed," he said.

"Singapore came in and said: 'Okay, you've been doing things this way. But this is what we think and from the calculations we have made, regarding contours and heat conditions, we could be doing so much better'.

"Everyone is still raving about them and you can say they have set a very high benchmark for the UAV teams which will follow them."

The films show the drone's three-man ground crew flying the vehicle both in the dustbowl conditions of daytime and at night in the pitch dark. Singapore provides vital intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance round-the-clock for troops on the ground.

SAVING LIVES BY THE SECONDS

Already, the six-part mini-documentary has garnered numerous hits since going live last month. The second episode, No pain no gain, uploaded on Jan 19, has had well over 10,000 views.

Also featured is the SAF's Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) team. These soldiers constantly monitor screens and equipment in an attempt to track any incoming rockets; the mountains which surround the base in the volatile Uruzgan region pose a constant threat as rocket teams hide themselves deep in the rugged terrain.

Without question, this team saves lives. Although troops on the ground have only seconds to react when an attack is launched, the warning they receive from WLR personnel could mean the difference between life and death.

The film-maker interviewed an Australian soldier who was given vital seconds to react by the SAF when a shell exploded only a few feet away. The early-warning system, he said, means he is around to tell the tale today.

In the video, the 21-man WLR team is shown working in pairs in a confined space. Their eyes are constantly glued to computer screens showing specks which represent the slightest movement. It is exhausting and unglamorous, yet incredibly important work.

Last month, 137 Singapore Armed Forces personnel had their contributions in Afghanistan marked at a special ceremony. Included were some of the men and women featured in the Ops Diaries.

The human side of the troops' work was brought home when married dad-of-two Mr Mahendran, who spent a total of 12 days in Afghanistan, filmed six members of the SAF's construction team completing work on a health clinic.

Eventually, the clinic in Bamiyan province will provide much-needed health care to more than 20,000 families.

Mr Mahendran said: "The Singapore guys are such a small team and the camaraderie among them is fantastic.

"They are incredibly quick to adapt to the environment, no matter how alien it is. And the feedback from soldiers from other countries is that they have blended in very well with everyone else, including the locals.

"When the engineers were building the clinic, I spoke to two elders from the village and they could not believe how quickly they worked.

"And the team faced all kinds of difficulties. The clinic took five months to build and a couple of months into it, everything was washed away during a terrible flood.

"But the Singapore team rebuilt everything and the locals were amazed to see everything put back just the way it was before. Our guys just keep going. They are like machines - no stopping."

There is a touching part in the film when we see the soldiers speak to their families thousands of miles away in Singapore.

"Using video phones, the troops were able to reassure their families that all was well and, in return, receive the warmth from the loved ones they left behind.

Singapore now officially operate Spyder SR to replace the Rapier system.
*
Just to add on to your post. Other than this acquisition, the RSAF will also take delivery of the Heron 1 UAV in 2011 to replace the Searcher-class UAV that has been in service since the 1990s. The Heron 1's longer flight endurance and better surveillance capabilities will provide better battlefield situational awareness.

The RSN will begin designing a new class of vessels to replace the current 2nd Generation Fearless-class patrol vessels. These patrol vessels have been in service since the 1990s and will be more than 20 years old by the time they are replaced.

So far no news on major new toys for the Singapore Army, in Singapore Parliament's Budget 2011 debate.. However the Armour Formation should be getting new "Future Digitalised AFVs" to complement the Leopard 2SGs & Bionix IIs, as reported in the Singapore Army News September 2010 issue; Link --> here (Scroll down to the last page to view the article, "Delivering the Future")

Speech by Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean at the Committee of Supply Debate 2011

3. Bilateral Defence Relations
4. Wider Spectrum of Operations
5. Update on 3rd Generation Transformation

I posted the whole 18-mini web episodes in either V4 or V5, earlier than you..

Besides, the series have been reedited & refined, with some interviews redone & scenes added, for the benefit of the non-Singaporean audience at large..

The fact that Nat Geo wanted to air the series & refined for international viewership on TV, speaks volume of cyberpioneer's success in reaching out to raise public awareness on military matters..

The standard SAR21 variant that you see on NG is heavier than the rifle (M16S1) that it replaced..

The standard of training for conscripted personnel are the same as the regulars since Full-time NSmen & Operationally Ready NSmen (reservist) train together with the Regulars..
