I'll be competing in the General Constitution (Konstitusi Umum). So far we have 12 candidates for that. They'll choose 9 that have the highest vote to becoming MPP. And the highest one will become the leader, Yang Di-Pertua(YDP)...

Its looks like UniMAP's student awareness about this particular things has rise....

Hi guys, I'm a first year Mechanical engineering student here in UniMAP. My overall opinion on UniMAP is a positive one although there are various downsides we 1st year students had to face from time to time. The orientation week as usual is an okay experience I can say & the PPMS did try their best to sort out things. It's not easy to handle 2250++ undergraduates all in the same place. We listened to speeches(some are stimulating enough to gain people's attention, whereas some put people to sleep), meet new friends, campus tour & etc. The food was okay, can't really complain. The main campus in Pauh looks great, especially the new library. The new library building is big & well designed. The system used to find, borrow, renew books are all the latest, similar to the system used in Singapore's National Library. The other library in KWSP is also nice to use. The lecture halls, lecture room, laboratories in the School of Mechatronics are up to date. The lecturers here are of many types, young(mostly here are young), old, locals, foreigners & etc. The hostels in Wang Ulu are small but okay to live although the main problem here is finding food. There are several food stalls & cafe around but not enough to support the entire student population here as some have to wait for 1 hour for the food to be ready. The internet connection here is reasonable although they block certain sites like media sharing, file sharing sites, gaming & anything not related to education. It's only fast early in the morning & late at night whereas it gets super slow, sometimes no connection throughout the day. Sadly my Digi broadband is of no use here as I can only receive GPRS signal here & all around Perlis. The climate here is HOT TO THE EXTREME! The first few days here seeing myself looking for air conditioned rooms & cravings for water. Perlis is quite an ulu place I must say, although the only city I can see here is Kangar. Other places like Ulu Pauh(extremely ulu, trees & highway everywhere) & Kuala Perlis are very quiet. Quite the opposite if compared to my hometown, JB. I am looking forward for a positive experience here in terms of education, values & lifestyle throughout the next four years. smile.gif

Thanks a lot for the very detailed description of your first few days in UniMAP! With this positive attitude, I am sure you will go very far in terms of your results and social life with your coursemates, friends and lecturers. icon_rolleyes.gif

The lecturers in Mech Engrg are generally very approachable. Feel free to consult them if you have any difficulties in your studies and even in your personal life (but not those too personal ones laa). However, there are also some rotten apples here and there. You will come across these guys as you progress through the programme. thumbup.gif

Hi nav92,

That's indeed a very descriptive experience you had in UniMAP. Made me think of my good 'ol days when I was in UniMAP. Those were the days man - no stress (at least until the finals), no pressure...

Mechanical Engineering is one of the best courses in UniMAP. I was from Mechanical Engineering also. Like what bb100 said, you get lots of helpful lecturers here and there. The combination of subjects that you get in your course now had gone through lots of modifications here and there from BEM and EAC. It will prepare you here and there to become problem-solving engineer.

I hope you will enjoy your four-year stint in UniMAP here and there. But don't enjoy too much here and there until you flunk your studies. smile.gif

For those who didn't know, let me brief a bit about MPP structures in UniMAP...

There are 9 Ahli Majlis Tertinggi (AMT) and 22 Ahli Majlis Kerja (AMK), usually known as Exco. Total of 31 members of MPP

The AMT were chosen among the General Constitutions Candidates. For this year Pilihanraya Kampus (PRK), 13 Candidates are competing to secure 9 seats. The person who earn the higest vote will become the next Yang Di-Pertua, The head of all students in UniMAP...

As for the Exco, they are representative from each school. Each school needs to have 2 MPPs. If there are more than 2 candidates competing for the school seats, there will be an election. But if not, the candidates automatically win the seats and represents their school for the MPP. For this year, some of the candidates already "menang tanpa bertanding". Candidates from my school (SCCE) and couple of other school as well...

If you're interested to compete, u need to attend 2 Kem Kepimpinan and 1 Kem Jatidiri, conducted by HEPA. So for those who're interested for next year, u can start working on from now...

I'm competing for the General Seats. I hope I can secure one from the 9 seats. and becoming the first troller becoming MPP. YEARGH!!!!

-DO vote for me. And I'll make /k/tards and LYN proud-

Nice to meet you exquisite_markas! Wow, my direct senior, lol rclxms.gif . So far I have gone through week 1 of semester 1 with lots of stuff about to come in the weeks to come. The semester system here is way different than the traditional STPM examination system. Most subjects are evaluated based on 60%(finals), 40%(course work, pop quiz, mid sem). Must keep myself with the same pace as the lecturer's teachings throughout the semester. nod.gif

I graduated last year from Mechanical Engineering. I don't think there are much changes, except for some minor change in the contents of each subject here and there. Most of them have been through rigorous scrutiny by the BEM. So there is nothing to worry about.

I believe UniMAP is now using the 0.75 GPA system instead of the 0.67 system. This will benefit the students, for sure.

Firstly, Hi junior. I'm 3rd year Computer Engineering student. I also hold a diploma In Electronics Engineering (Maj Computer) from Seberang Perai Polytechnic. Let me brief u abit What is Computer Engineering...

Conputer Engineering is a subdivision of Electronics Engineering. We learn about Electronic Component and Circuit that related to computer system. Basically, we learn on how computer (CPU, GPU, RAM, ROM, Chipset, etc..) operates.

The difference between degree level and diploma level is,
-In diploma, we learn on how to troubleshoot problems.
-In degree, we learn on how to design and make the system operates. And of course, we also learn basic things about troubleshoot as well...

All words come from senior exquisite_markas are true. Its mostly about electronics. But if you're interested with Linux and Android, we do have teams of lecturer that are expert with it....

You can always ask me anything, I'll try to assist u. Because b4, I'm also as the same person as u. A crazee no-lifers computer geek....

Thanks for a very informative explanation. Since you are so actively involved in MPP work, I am sure you are more than qualified to address the following issues which will be highlighted below.

Personally, I find that all this MPP thing is just a waste of the university's resources. During my time at UniMAP, I hardly see any of the MPPs at work. Quite a number of my friends were MPPs themselves. I was curious and asked them their actual intentions of becoming a student representative, since they were in their final year and had to deal with their FYP. Guess what? Their responses were not even close to what I had in mind. One of the most popular answers which I got from them was
QUOTE
Ahli MPP mudah dapat kerja lepas grad. Hehe.

Such childish answers.

Next up, the MPPs during my time, who are supposed to represent the entire student population of UniMAP, actually spoke rotten English! I mean, how do you expect them to carry the name of UniMAP on the international front with broken English? I am not saying that they have to possess the ability to speak like President Obama, or have the command of the English language to be as good as William Shakespear...just master basic day-to-day standard English would do the job pretty well, I guess.

For one I would disagree with the current electoral system of the MPP. How can such important posts be determined by popularity alone? So many factors are not being considered over here. The ability to communicate well, the work ethics and attitude of that person, and so forth. As I have mentioned previously, if that person is a very popular guy but he is one friggin' lazy bum, does that mean he has the chance to sit on top while others who are more qualified than he is get to be his slaves? This is outrageous, to say the very least!

Is being an all-rounded student a criterion of an MPP member? I clearly remember that the prefects of my secondary school were all good at their studies, and at the same time, actively involved in extra-curricular activities. My head prefect is a four-flatter, and despite the fact that he is good in everything he does, he is a humble, soft-spoken gentleman. He is well-respected back then; even the school principal respected him as a student leader. Sadly, I seldom see these qualities in our MPPs. I think the self-building camps organised by the HEPA did not really work, huh?

Hi nav92,

Actually, quite a lot have changed even before I left UniMAP. First, the major revamp was the final exam questions, where they categorised them from C1 to C6. C1 problems test students on general understanding and fundamentals, and C6's test students on the application of the general understanding of the subject, which usually has an open-ended solution.

Second, the curriculum has changed from a 70-30 hands-on to theory ratio to, probably 80-20. This is the general requirement outlined by EAC and BEM. Well, previously, I had non-conventional machining and CNC, which is purely hands-on. I believe they have replaced that.

Third, will be what bb100 mentioned, the scoring system. It was based on a 0.67 pointer formerly, now they have changed it to 0.75. STPM follows the former system, where A=4.00, A-=3.67, B+=3.33 and so on. What UniMAP practices is like A=4.00, A-=3.75, B+-3.50... Seems like a boon more than a bane to me.

However, the basic structure of the course did not change. Previously, ME at UniMAP was a design-orientated course. And currently it is still a design-oriented course. The only difference is that the current one offers less hands-on experience.

The reason why I thinking about competing is....

I wanted to share my ideas to all others unimap students. I don't wan't them to be static, study all day along without realizing whats happening to their country and also the world now. I want them at least have some concern about other isssues outside the campus as well. As a Mahasiswa, someone that will colors the future later need to know at least some of the issues outside....

Or I can say in Malay. Kita adalah penggerak masa depan, dan bakal memimpin masyarakat. Kalau Mahasiswa statik, hanya tahu mengenai study dan engineering things sahaja, susahlah nanti. Sometimes NKRI pon tak tau, kadar inflasi pon tak tahu. Sedihlah jadi mahasiswa kalau macam itu. Kita kena ambil tahu atleast abit about our country....

Its not a total differ. Its just majoring on certain things. This semester I learn about Operating System. How the operating system operates. What's the protocol need to follow. What's the microproccers doing inside the OS and other stuff as well....

I respect ur opinion bro. But for this year candidates, I've seen their English is much more powderfull than I'm. As for the "Not doing their job" thigy, that one I can't comment more. Sometimes we didn't see what they're doing, But they indeed doing thier job...

About those "Senang Dapat Kerja" thingy. I also thing its a bullshit. It just add a line in ur resume, might affect abit. But if their basic skills also failed, so no job la...

I'm joining this thing to train myself to be an all-rounder dude. And I've seen something inside the uni that NEEDS to change. I oso dun want for the beginning, but if someone didn't start it, who will???

Don't worry bro, I already ask some of my fren, seniors and alumni over this. Even someone popular as Saiful Rahman, a recent grad from mechatronics. He's a friend of mine during school back then....

Hope what you said is true, my friend, especially the part on English. No doubt, the University's official language is BM, but I feel English is equally important. MPPs would not be able to use BM when you guys are on a tour to Oxford or MIT to promote the University, for example.

I do agree with you that our university need changes here and there. But before you do anything serious, please ask yourself: Are all other MPPs behind me? Would they work with me towards a common goal? If your answer to these simple questions is a big NO, then I suggest that you better drop the idea. It's hard to work alone and against an entire group of people.

Anyway, good luck to you, pal! It's heartening to know that there is someone enthusiastic enough to bring changes to the MPP and UniMAP. notworthy.gif
