I wonder how come there's not much talk about this as it looks like a winner on paper at least.

- It's using LX5's sensor
- Looks smaller than the LX5
- Looks like there's dual control ring like the S95
- Hot shoe = potential viewfinder??
- Can assume it'll have Oly's nice nice jpegs

Bestest of all... fast fast lens of them all.

The Olympus XZ1 has a 28-112mm f/1.8-2.5 Lens
The Panasonic LX5 has 24-90mm f/2.0-3.3 lens
The Canon S95 has a 28-105mm f/2.0-4.9 lens
The Samsung EX-1 has a 24-72mm f/1.8-2.4 lens

Potential cons:
- Hope it's not slowass like Oly's M43's.

Tips

Share some tips and tricks that works for me la... do share if you find otherwise.

1) Shoot RAW to avoid jpeg smear

2) P mode works best imo cos can use the front ring for ISO and adjust with rear ring for exposure compensation.

3) In P mode, it will almost always keep aperture wide open but its sharp fully opened up so no problems there

4) ISO400 is like a little over ISO1600 in Canon APS-C. So go over that in worst case scenarios only

5) The IS is very kungfu so don't worry about SS too much

6) XZ1 tend to underexpose so bump that ~+1/3EV.

7) Always meter correctly base on histogram cos small sensor not as much RAW headroom as dslr.

8) Keep it in Macro mode so no need to mar fan change at different focus distance. Didn't find any adverse effect in doing so.

9) On mix lighting, it tend to go towards green so use the custom white balance which is very user friendly.

10) For low contrast landscapes, small sensor have small dynamic range... so bracket it. Get yourself a shutter release cable also cos it doesn't do 2sec timer bracket like canon dslr.

Ian hit the nail on the head

28mm wide = useless.

I don't know about you, but the Samsung EX1 is a damn solid camera. Was very tempted to buy it but ended up with a much cheaper and much more portable Ixus 130 for travelling.

Reason being if I had cared enough for proper pictures, I would lug my 7D around.

Precisely. Therefore why pay more for the same?

I got the Ixus for 800. My money would be on the Sammy EX1 as compared to the Oly.

Oh giler mahal sial.
I wonder how the performance is like.. after using a dslr... now when I use the S90 or when I try the E-PL1.. I damn hate the lack of feedback.... that black screen between shots. It just feels so slow.

Mmm... just found out that the RRP in Taiwan come out di...

Oly XZ-1 --> NT16,800
S95 --> ~NT12,000 street price +/- NT1000
LX5 --> ~NT14,000 street price +/- NT1000

Then again NT16,800 can buy GF1 liao.

Because its a Samsung.. no soul... no mojo tongue.gif

At 35mm equivalent
XZ-1 focal length --> 28-112mm
E-PL2 kit focal range --> 14-42mm = 28-84mm = shorter than XZ-1.

Strange that while some places already selling the XZ-1... there's no real in-depth review of it yet.

Wondered how the shutter lag and shot to shot time compares with the LX5

check this out!! totally pawn s95 n lx5

Performance

Overall performance
The XZ-1 is not an absolute speed-demon in terms of either focus and operation but it's rare for it to be so slow as to be noticeable, let alone problematic. Switching modes, entering menus and calling up the function menu are all handled promptly and focus is achieved without the delay ever becoming frustrating. Of course it's not fast enough to try to shoot sports but for most uses it's fast enough and the AF point is easy enough to adjust that you can quickly define a point-of-focus and pre-lock the focus (and exposure) with a half press of the shutter.

XZ-1 focal length 28-112 and E-PL2 Kit 28-84.

The f/1.8-2.5 is just O_O

In compact camera speak.. XZ-1 is 4X zoom and E-PL2 kit lens is 3X zoom.

Easier?

Thanks guy.
I undertsand now
One more question, is the kit lens provided by DSLR Canon or Nikon also can not focus for long distance? In comapct term, 3X or so? Then the only good thing about ELP-2 against XZ-1 is only you can change the lens. If I want to save money and use only Kit lens, then I better buy XZ-1.

BTW, XZ-1 has a function work like filter than LX5 do not hve

i'm really impressed by the depth of field at 112mm, f2.5....i guess if no lens change this is a great choice.

the continuous shooting modes are also very impressive. Neither can be had from S95 or LX5, only G12 can get the continuous shooting.

if the street prices are lower then it'll seriously challenge 4/3 and Sony Nex

It was tought deciding between this and the S95. Price diff is RM240. S95 was really compact -- too compact even. I found it hard to hold. Also S95 felt more plasticky and the shutter click was less pleasant.

But really, I bought the XZ-1 this morning because of the lens. The best in it's class. Less purple fringing and better resolution in RAW than anyone else.

Bought it for RM1.6k cash at Fotokem.

LX-5 tongue.gif Made in Japan quality guaranteed and XZ-1 made in China hahaha, that's what the salesperson told me, I don't know true or not. But if you held them on your hand you'll feel the difference. And no doubt LX-5 takes good picture, LX-3 was already a very successful camera itself.

No lar... I just meant that like gogo said, f2.5 at the long end of the zoom (vs f3.3 on the LX and f4.9 on the S95) is useful but as a whole package, there's no significant improvement over something like the S90. At least not enough to justify sacrificing pocket friendliness

I believe many here not only a FAN for the brand but also people who really knows photography, if not they won't choose a brand over a camera that is not worth or cannot perform up to certain standard. I'm a fan of lx-5 it's because I felt that the camera is good and not only about the brand, everyone have their own preferences rclxms.gif

24-100mm ...

wider is more fun for me.... 100mm compare to XZ-1 112mm is not a big deal...
but max aperture at tele is something we need to know to determine if Nikon is better deal than Oly

But as of now, Nikon compare is always the loser...

Look at the crop and I see that Oly win in all test.It just have better color and contrast.

Reading what he said is quite weird since he does not support Oly.

This means, the review is crap..

Because in the review, its so obvious Olympus XZ-1 shoot better picture.

Dear Friends and Forumers,

Dated: 12 Feb 2011

good day! just tested Canon S95, Lumix LX-5, Samsung EX-1 and Olympus XZ-1 at the shop today!
well! i must say all the device above a impressive. i'm in the market for a compact, as i just sold my Nikon D90, very lazy to lug around a big camera, although i had so much fun with it..but i just cant forget the bokeh created by DSLR pictures.

hence, i decide to look for one which such capabilities on a compact.

bokeh on ;
Canon S95 -Good, very easy to operate and can generate the bokeh effect without much hassle.
Lumix LX-5 - Not good, even knowing what to do, the bokeh doesnt seems very impressive, maybe its just me but i dont like it
Samsung EX-1 - Average bokeh, need to time to play with the focus, but generally not difficult to create the bokeh effect
Oly XZ-1 - Pretty much on the same platform as the samsung, but the bokeh is much better, maybe because the OLED screen isnt as clear as the Samsung.

Well! that said, i can decide on either S95, Samsung and Oly.

i dont know why, but i hated the LX-5, its just not as good as the LX-3 in some way...the picture colors are quite bad in my opinion. it seems pretty flat. anyway! this is my opinion..pls dont hate or whack me LX-5 fans.
but some shop sales guys seems to agree with me..but some are just die hard LX-5..maybe more commission..hahah

after that...i tried playing other settings, and ease of usage.

well! i must say the Canon S95 impressed me the most .....however, the specs just lags behind the others...especially video..but the Samsung is the worst..in video...no HD..why?

anyway! end of the day..looking at all specs and reviews from Dpreview....my choice is pretty clear....

im getting the olympus XZ-1...

but something just pisses me off.....no support on XZ-1 raw on Light room 3.....WHAT..why?
damn it.

anyway...still getting it.

Dude, it takes some time for LR to update their list of supported cameras. You think those software designers are genius that know what camera will be rolling out in the future and have that ready in their software way before the camera official announcement?!

It's normal that LR(in fact, all other PP software) doesn't support the latest camera but just be patient in 2-4months you'll see an update of LR that will support your model of camera.

I find the S95 to be a very inspired design that breaks from the usual digicam design. So minimalistic, totally lacking in pointless decorations and consumerist bling, pared down and eminently pocketable.

Nonetheless I went for the XZ-1.

Hi want to ask if this camera can do the bokeh effect while shooting video? I know that DSLR with video capabilities can do it but am wondering if compact cameras has the same ability?

Since S95 can't focus or zoom during video, I assume it cannot do this. But this XZ-1 can focus and zoom while video mode, so anyone knows?

Just got my XZ-1

2 years warranty
1 spare battery (It looks original)
8GB SDcard
Olympus Camera Pouch
1 pillow
1 unbrella
No extra charge on flexi payment

RM1750 during the fotokem fair in PWTC.

Overall impression :
Good:
-Easy to use little camera. I can take it out from drybox then shoot some used item to put on sale. No need to assemple the dslr and lens.
-Good output at night due to the F1.8 aperture.
-Got raw to process.
-Light enough to bring to hiking.
- focusing speed is good enough for a P&S.

Bad:
- Cannot use UV filter.
- The lens will always pop the lens cap out.
- Max usable iso for me is 400, I wish it can go higher.
- The lens or LCD not that good... when shooting scene with bright background light got white line across the screen, is this flare?
- Have to put battery in the camera body to charge, very toublesome coz I have 2 batteries.

Is there anyone who managed to get the camera within RM14++ to RM15++ in Penang? Care to share the place where you bought it?

If in KL, care to share the place you bought it at good price?

Really interested. Last time I was in KL, most shop offered to sell me around RM1580 with on standard packages. No free gift watsoever.

Adobe has released 'Release Candidates' of its Camera RAW 6.4 and Lightroom 3.4 raw processing software. The updates cover 7 additional cameras including Canon's 600D/T3i and 1100D/T3, Olympus's XZ-1 and E-PL2, and Samsung's NX11. They are available from the company's Adobe Labs site and also address a number of issues reported via customer feedback. The company uses the term 'Release Candidate' to denote software that is well tested but not yet the final version

latest update from lightroom support xz1 now ...

I think standard package does not comes with freebies like camera or additional battery and also @ price like $1400-1500 will not be entitled for installment package. Anyway, believe this is a good camera which now makes me thinking of either buying LX5 or XZ-1 to replace my Fujifilm compact which spoil by my wife after drop to the floor.

There is 2 shops in BB plaza - Foto Edar and another shop at same floor but dono wat name ( the shop got 2 old folks )
Foto Edar = rm 1480
Shop Dono wat name = rm 1421 or 1431 ( donoo y got the 1 )
Both dis prices is for the CAMERA ONLY. NO Memory cardla, casingla, mini tripodla, umbrellala, nothing.

At lowyat plaza the cheapest i was quoted is - rm 1550 -camera+pouch+8gb+mini tripod.
Regarding bundle package dat come free wit the pouch/case, most shop give the pouch is the lousy case dat look like those handphone fabric case/pouch.

Finally i wen back to FotoEdar and bought frm them..final damage - rm 1650 (Camera+leather pouch+8gb+minitripod)
The price abit + bcoz of the pouch, cos original frm Olympus and its made from leather, very nice.
I will post some pics of the accessories later..

Thanks for the info guys...very useful.
As the other day walk pass Farenheit 88 and came across a photoshop on the gnd flr level, ask the price...and they say they were selling it at RM1699.

What a joke... luckily found this thread.

This seems like a good camera and comes with a hotshoe.

What about the Nikon that I've been reading in this thread?

Ok, guys, can me to the list of Owners liao.

Bought a white XZ-1 just now.

Charging battery now....

First impression....the most useless piece of junk user manual i have ever seen in my life. For such a high end camera, all it says was how to charge battery, power on, use auto mode, take picture and take video. That's it!!!! doh.gif doh.gif...Really kedekut...dun wanna print a few pages more....doh.gif

Right now i am reading downloaded user manual....

And yeah, i also saw the white flare or something when pointing at bright lights. Is this normal? But when photo came out, no such thing??? rclxub.gif

should be not much different, the sensors are almost the same size..i'll go for XZ-1 for much faster lens, f/1.8 to f/2.5..G12 f/2.8 only at its widest..

I got a question. Tested the video recording just now. This autofocus thing is quiet annoying as it focus/defocus as i shift the camera. Is there a way to make it fixed focus when shooting video???

XZ-1. If you go to S95 thread, then it's S95. In LX-5 thread, LX-5 is best. smile.gif

Seriously, i think all these camera are good. Won't go wrong with any of them. Just see which feature you want most.

Guys,....i now realized there is a serious flaw with this camera. The video recording function is queit crap:

1) Focusing/re-focusing issue...always goes out and refocus...very annoying.

i read it can be solved by setting to manual mode and fixing the focus or something like that...so it becomes fixed focus like S95....haven't try yet. But this makes it very troublesome...no point having the record button if need to adjust so many things.

The videos also seems to be pretty noisy...compared to my wife's Samsung Wave 2, which records really good HD videos with minimal noise (but maybe slightly less detail).

Video is certainly not the XZ-1 strong point.

just got my camera....i have to agree...the video is a bit crappy....i still think that the LX-5's video is one of the best ....

anyway, there is no regret in getting this camera....the bokeh effect is quite good and its easy to use...

went to scout the whole low yat yesterday and finally decided to buy it from Desa Home Theater....RM1530....camera+sandisk 8gb+ori Olympus pouch....most of the shops in low yat is giving out the 8gb pendrive memory card...have to add money to upgrade to sandisk

at least i dont have to worry that the shop close down few months later.....

I use my XZ1 with FL36 on hotshoe, no problem.
I will use 3rd party trigger to trigger remote flash and strobes. TTL will not be available.

The FL36R version I'm not sure. Will test and report back later.

Got 3rd party ones to use with the Oly?

Some poison http://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=541&t=1984346&p=1

By the way, does the XZ-1 remember its last setting? For example... set to spot metering, take a couple pics, turn off.... turn on again. Will it stay at spot metering or default?

Thanks

yeah...i think xz-1 is under appreciated,i think we should support olympus on this 1,its rare that a manufacturer stop competing with the pack like in megapixel or size race and focus on something more pertinent like lens design

IMHO, Olympus is like Nissan.

Not many people buying it due to strong brand for Canon & Panny.

Not really a fan of nissan too but you're right.. if the XZ-1 is a Canon or Nikon .... then the fanboys will buy them in throves.

Having said that... I went on a jalan jalan session here in Taipei and I notice a steady stream of XZ-1 users.

actually partly its olympus fault in bad decision making as well, for example the adopting four third format for their SLR is a bad one, when every single major player is out with their larger format sensor

remember olympus is fame for their lens design and body construction like nikon, not electronics, and they are not utilizing this asset very well, unlike panasonic which ride along the leica brand name for their compacts, olympus did exactly the other way round, going into digital world without much of the electronics experience, and not utilizing their optics prowess in making/advertising their product at the same time

i hope xz-1 and pen series would be the resuscitation point for this once flamboyant company and pushing the other competing company in the market for innovation,i still miss their all analog OM800 used by my dad for our family photos so many years ago

Even their PEN's... some of the things like slow AF and a downright ancient LCD (on the E-PL1) is just downright offputting.

Btw... did you get your XZ-1?

will update you regarding the deal i get this weekend

actually i do observe many high iso shots taken by this olympus, their noise reduction algorithm is that in someway, under certain condition and certain kind of detail it actually doing better job that the others, but not so good result under other situation.from what i can see the noise reduction is optimize to preserve larger detail and maintain edge contrast,it does this better than s95 where s95 tend to blur the edge more but preserve more detail within the edges, and s95 seems to preserve the color integrity better than olympus at higher iso

I've downloaded some high iso XZ-1 RAW's from the web. Quite usable lor and more headroom than the S90 (which I have) output.

It's gonna take a while to get used to the camera and since so many reviews are out there but here's preliminary thoughts:

- AF and shutter lag is fast.. I feel that its much more responsive than the S90. Works well in dark situation too
- Overall performance feels good but the responsiveness of the menus are slower than the S90 though not painfully so.
- Metering is weird and its got a tendency to underexpose to avoid blown highlights. At the moment, I think no need AEL button also since the matrix (ESP) metering takes into account the whole screen without prioritizing the focus point.
- RAW is better than expected. Surprising amount of headroom
- Despite all the blah blah blah over the internet... I find it quite user friendly so far in terms of menu. ISO is just a click of the OK button and then select secukup rasa.
- I don't find that auto ISO to 200 issue too annoying since I don't use auto ISO
- The mode dial is in a lousy location... easily ter-switched.
- The USB charging with a power cord... the usb thingy... AND a USB cable is stupid. Gonna change it to those USB charge thing that plugs directly into the socket. Edit: Now I'm using the iphone adaptor to charge it.
- Not that pocketable... ok with cargo pants but definately need a bag for others.
- Potential to lose the hotshoe cover.
- And I'm not impressed by the battery life so far.

Thus far, it seemed like a worthwhile upgrade over the Canon S90.

Some test shots.

Took a few pics while in the karaoke after I bought it, pretty impressive given the lightning (or lack of it). Much better than my dad's old camera that was 5-6 years old! XD

Not sure if we're talking about the same thing... but when there's lens flare (look above... scooter picture... the flare on the streetlight).. there will be pinkish lines or when shooting wide open into the sun, the screen turns pinkish for a sec and then I think the ND filter snaps in to protect the sensor... I find it ok lo... think of it as flare warning function tongue.gif

Thus far... in addition to my earlier post... the following are annoying:

- In aperture priority, the camera will not allow shutter speed lower than 1/2 sec. This one is really wtf... have to go around it in shutter priority or manual.
- The manual focus borders unusable.

These posted in other threads di... but some shots from today's get-to-know-the-xz1 jalan jalan session.

in term of photographic function this camera is fantastic, and i have better satisfaction taking photo with this camera than my 7d and my once owned 550d,but i do find some annoyance too,

-the battery indicator will off seconds after powering up(do you guys figured out how to on balik the battery status indicator or some other way to check the battery status?)

-the hi1 burst mode used interpolation for 5mp setting, thus getting resolution of 2mp or less only for that mode

-handling of this camera is rather tricky, and its pretty heavy(but i like heavy camera)

-first charge of the battery doesn't seems to last that long, but i hope after go through few charge cycle would have some improvement

-sound setting is pretty limited, and if u mute the shutter sound,it would mute the focus lock sound at the sametime

-stupid m and s setting for image resolution,y not just offer all the resolution in the same tab

-inconvenient way of charging spare battery, though on the bright side you'll only need to bring the cable around if you have a laptop with you to charge via usb

on the bright side

-the iso100 is surprisingly usable 80-90% of the time for my purpose, even in low light the bright lens could sustain fast enough shutter speed, and the image stabilizer is doing a really good job,i can hand help 1/4s and still getting sharp shots most of the time

-the build feels really solid

-the color is especially nice and punchy suits my taste

-iso can be adjust in small increment,100,125,160,200...and so on

-the amoled lcd looks really nice, though tend to make u think u had took a better shots than it really was

-i do like the lens cap though,in contrary to most review, its inconvenient but its safer in the pocket with these kind of lens cap, build in type lens cap have the danger of tweeze open in the pocket(my old panasonic compact tweeze open very easily)

-yeah despite the bla bla regarding the size i'm able to fit it in my bermuda pants pocket no problem, but i store it in camera case though most of the time

Yeah... I find it refreshing to use a compact again after shooting with dslr.

Cool thing with a compact is that it allows for really really close shots for street photography.

The rendition is more crisp.... contrasty... more dof look (it does bokeh balls wei... how talented is that for a compact! ) and more RAW headroom than the S90 lo.

On the downside.. have to control the noise which ramps up quite fast.

But I prefer grain rather than no details.

contrasty..actually that is what lacks in cameras these days..but one can always apply it on pp..that's the big diff when i shoot with FF and crop..the colors from the crop aint that good sad.gif

good to hear that, maybe i'll try it at a shop someday. compacts are easier to lug around thats wat i love about em laugh.gif

Check out the seriouscompact review.... since they just tested the S95.
The reviewer's pic is pretty damn good I think.

my astonishment with this camera is the ability to use wide open all the time(unlike dslr big aperture prime lens where u'll get fussy about soft wide open) and possibility of using iso 100 for almost every situation(at least for my application)

I'm not surprised with a cropped sensor. I'm guessing that the shot was taken around 2 feet and at f/2, you get approx 0.5 feet of DoF.

Sometimes when have to bump ISO means have to bump di. Ur chue keok shows some handshake blur jor. tongue.gif

Btw... the color of ur photos look a bit on the reddish side..Try to change to AWB red setting to -1 if you're shooting jpeg..that will bring down the red a bit but of course, its a matter of personal preference.

the focus point is actually above the chue keok finger a bit there,i not sure y it looks slightly blur there, but viewing at my pc is tack sharp really
the color thingy...i'm actually using the "cuisine" scene mode to try out the camera setting, the normal mode makes the pig hand look slightly more pucat and less delicious(though i see its quite accurate resemblance of the true scene)

on other notes i do miss the AEL button, but at least there are ways around AFL button by using the focus tracking, you could lock onto the focus point u want and recompose the shot as the camera will follow the lock point across the frame, though sometime the tracking would off slightly

Compact camera with liveview and dslr usage pattern is different la.

I saw that workaround in dpreview as well... but I think very mar fan la. Have to click focus modes... then click info... then change to tracking AF... then yada yada...

It's far easier to use matrix metering... click exposure compensation and dial in secukup rasa. Much faster.

Besides... XZ-1's matrix metering is pretty interesting in the sense that it always underexposure to contrasty scenes (suits me) and avoid blown highlights. On the other hand... grey cloudy scenes .. just +1/3 by default lo.

Last night I was just mucking around shooting this very brightly lit (with backlit signboard) convenient store at midnight... so it's about as contrasty as it gets... none of my other cameras could get it right at first time. With the 550D, I have to lock AE on the backlit signboard and then dial in -EV... my S90 cannot get it right AT ALL PERIOD. The XZ-1 on matrix metering just point and shoot also came out nice di.

Edit: Found the pic inside the memory card...jpeg. Still got blown though. Maybe dial in some -EV next time.

Thanks for the headsup.

Makes sense in theory though since the macro mode (in photo mode) prioritize AF on objects thats nearer rather than normal AF which prioritize AF in the distance.

Already bought one white colour..gonna pick up this evening. I was sooo close on buying an S95 (my last dead camera was a canon a710is but lastly read a lot of review and fell in love with oly xz-1. even more i got an ancient external flash so i can use the hot shoe. i saw reviews complaining about the noise in the iso 400+ and bad jpeg from the camera..but it's not a big deal as most probably i will rarely needs to use full scale printing..and RAW PP also helps a lot..some more I read about u guys findings to reduce the AF hunting in video recording..that's a relief..so made up my mind and bought it yesterday..

I was sooo close on buying an S95 (my last dead camera was a canon a710is but lastly read a lot of review and fell in love with oly xz-1. even more i got an ancient external flash so i can use the hot shoe. i saw reviews complaining about the noise in the iso 400+ and bad jpeg from the camera..but it's not a big deal as most probably i will rarely needs to use full scale printing..and RAW PP also helps a lot..some more I read about u guys findings to reduce the AF hunting in video recording..that's a relief..so made up my mind and bought it yesterday..

yes..correct..and hoping for that..when I was with my beloved RIP canon I use it with CHDK, canon firmware hack, unlocking canon PNS capabilities such as optical zoom during video recording, RAW (from a normal PNS), live histograms etc..from there i learned to PP raw eventho not as advance as DSLR like output. I used RAWTherapy. Kalau la ada CHDK for XZ-1 hehe..Canon S95 is a great camera but I just want to explore new brand. actually S95 - 1 XZ-1 - 1, both have their own highs and lows..but F1.8 - F2.5 drool.gif me.. thumbup.gif

It was tought deciding between this and the S95. Price diff is RM240. S95 was really compact -- too compact even. I found it hard to hold. Also S95 felt more plasticky and the shutter click was less pleasant.

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to get XZ-1 perhaps by next month (hoping for Ramadhan special discount tongue.gif).

Do you guys think 8GB SDHC Class 4 card is fast enough for the camera? I'm looking for deal which offers extra ori battery as I would like to buy the card separately.

Hope I can join this club after Raya smile.gif

i trade the card with spare ori battery for 1.5k package...its the best deal at the time i surveyed around, maybe u could get cheaper price by now
as for the card speed,i'm using it with sandisk extreme pro uhs-1 coz being kiasu, but in truth i find no discernible different in practice than my cheapo standard sandisk class 4 card(the blue one),my best guess are because the buffer depth of this camera is quite deep and the file isn't so huge to digest,my advice is try your existing card first,if u find its slow only change, card are getting cheaper everyday anyway,so every minute u shrud off buying it is a saving
*
That's kind of answer I'm looking for. Thanks bro. I also thought of trading the card for ori battery, as battery usually pricier than card and card always getting cheaper. I don't know the market price for ori Olympus battery but I assume it should be more than RM100 right?

I got mine for 1599 in sungai petani..for sure more expensive than KL price but I got 8gb SD card, casing and tripod..but my olympus casing not arrive yet so they gave me panasonic one first then will replace it after stock arrive. so far I love it with the performance..there are significant smearing if crop 100% but important and good pics will always go to the Lightroom..

Hi all,

I'm just read this thread and very nice to know that XZ-1 is very impressive.

I've bought this camera about two weeks ago.

U know, I don't know about this camera until I go to store and the seller recommend me this camera.
Actually, I've been looking for Panasonic LX-5 and survey for more than two months.
Lastly, after test both of the camera at the store, I've choose XZ-1.
Actually, I've choose this camera because of the function and picture quality and the ring. WOW...

After use it for two weeks, I didn't regret at all.
I've like the ART Filter. 6 art can be use. So, no need for me to edit in photoshop.

Last week, I've added screen and lens protector but from different store.
The seller say, it can't be off unless I crowbar it.
Badly, yesterday, the screen protector is write off from the screen and I've go to the store again.

BTW, I love this camera.

Hi. I bought a white Olympus XZ-1 on Sunday (10 July 2011) for RM1450 from Digital Mall, PJ. I got 8GB SD card, screen protector and a mini tripod.

should i grab this camera? i just sold my gf1, cos didnt ultilize it at all lolz.. thinking of getting something more compact and without the fuss of changing lens. After i touch m43, i guess i am better at getting a high end compact because i seldom use those functions and manual focus at all. How does xz-1 compare to their competitors? last time i was eyeing on lx5 but in the end i bought gf1. Now i am stepping back on this region. Is there any camera that i should wait?

hmm, actually i am not an avid photographer, i want a camera to shot something when i go travelling, or events. Not really into street photography, perhaps shoot some foods, some interesting stuff. I am interested in XZ-1 due to the larger aperture which i don need to use flash to take low light photos.

I use the XZ-1 for snapshots too.

I couldn't get comfortable with the LX5 and dislike the slow zoom on the S95 (oledi have a S90) but the tipping point for me is XZ-1's very crisp and contrasty rendition compared with its rival.

Ok... google'd it already but I don't think putting a piece of cheap plastic in front of the lens is a good idea lor. Compact camera's are limited as it is... adding this "UV filter" thingy may make things worse.

I also got a 550D but while the XZ-1 is pretty capable but it's still far far away from a dslr.

Like I cannot use it to snipe telephoto at night or bokeh bokeh portraits etc.

I got it cos due to some reasons, these days I don't have time for photo specific jalan jalans .... I still can carry the XZ-1 with me all the time just in case something interesting pops.

I tabulated from some review sites.. forgot which one di sad.gif

Continuous shooting means continuous mode la... not the reduced resolution speed priority mode (7fps on NEX) or hi speed burst on the XZ-1 (15fps in Hi Speed 2)

aikss... I'm sure there's a guide somewhere on the interweb.

Anyhow.. go open a flickr account (www.flickr.com).

It's free for 200 pics.

Follow instruction to upload your photos (resize it first to 1024x???)

Then do this.... copy the link as per pic and post it in your post here.

Well..I don't find it to be much of a problem in lowlight.

In fact, I think it handles real world low light shooting much better than the S90.

Granted, there's completely different way of shooting with a dslr and with a compact lor.

i mean like low light i need to set very very low shuttle speed, then 20mm no image stablization, so the image is kinda blurry if i were to shoot it with my hands, even slight movement the whole photo is blurred. But there is not much noise la.. I just went to lowyat to see xz-1, i love it more than lx5, it looks better and sleeker smile.gif love the design, but the shopkeeper say lx5 leica lens is better than olympus one, so the quality is better, is it true?

Since I'm posting grandfather story... might as well post here rather than in pm.

Basically I got the XZ-1 based on my own needs.

vs DSLR
I already have a 550D with the lens that I need so if I wanna shoot mei mei or snipe betel nut chicks at midnight... I have that capability in my dslr.

The idea of a second camera for me is for taking family snapshots when its too mar fan to bring a dslr out and since these days I've not much time for myself, carry it with me all the time just in case I come across something interesting or impromptu street shooting.

So it should have the maximum flexibility.

vs Mirrorless like micro four third, NEX etc

Mirrorless cameras although tempting... are out of the question for me as they're only small with pancake lens and I need multiple focal range. I don't wanna carry a bag of multiple primes or spend that kind of money as well.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

From the above, I reckon that the XZ-1 RAW files have a bit over 1 stop disadvantage over m43 but its lens does 112mm @ f2.5 vs m43 kit zoom doing 80-90mm @f5.6 so there's a 2+ stop advantage there.

And there's also some inherent characteristics of small sensor that I find useful... it's less sensitive to shake and don't necessarily have to adhere to the 1:1 shutter speed/focal length rule... and f4 @ wide essentially hyperfocussed di. tongue.gif

As to why XZ-1 vs the other compact crowd.

S95--> already have a S90. Slow zoom so limited to wide only at low light.
LX5 --> cannot get comfortable with the control. I like the 24mm but don't like the feel of the camera and the image is good but not special to me.
EX-1 --> personal reason. boycott korean goods. nuff said.

Those were the technical considerations lar... but the non-technical ones is that I like the rendition of the lens, crispy crispy and good micro contrast... its a personal thing....it feel special to me.

Mirrorless or dslr are MUCHHHHH more capable technically but I reckon photography is not just about ISO performance or AF speed... its rewarding to work around them and adjust.

Sekian my cerita tongue.gif

ps: So far the pics I posted were taken to show different lighting conditions.... I'll be happy to take samples if you want to know how it performs under specific conditions. But no portraits la.... since I got no models tongue.gif

i am quite satisfied with the image quality from your flickr, altho the noise is there but i guess it is an compact anyway smile.gif How does you compare the lx5 image quality to xz-1? I went to dpreview and saw some of the sample movies and i think they are good enough actually, just that the color is not as nice as avchd.

Although I think comparing noise on jpegs are quite pointless but here you go... for your viewing pleasure...snapped 3 minutes ago.... ISO800 and ISO1600 out of camera jpegs... just resize only.

bro sniper..IQ wise i cant differentiate much la but 550d better sharpness, xz-1 comes close second and s90 the last..and S90 color a bit warmer than 550d and xz-1, xz-1 shot seems a bit brighter from others..(from my notebook monitor point of view)..please correct me..thanks for snapping this comparison shot.

Just got my white xz-1 biggrin.gif But i din get any pouch for it... can anyone recommend any pouch? the shop trying to sell me the pouch for rm100, normal one, not original leather one. And he offered me to put lens UV filter, for rm60 i think it is a rip off and i dont like having a filter in front, summore it is permanent lolz.... I saw normal UV filtter, even MCUV got significant lens flare on my gf1. Anything other than Hoya filter, i will not put it on my lens permanently. Anyone did put the lens filter? Btw, the lens cap what u guys use to tie onto the body? and tie to which part one? It doesnt include strings for it >< Also can recommend any nice casing that can fit nicely?

The string is included la.... in a small plastic bag.

Anyway, the less accessories you bundle with your camera.. the less likely kena ripoff.

there are 2 pouch which i find to fit xz-1 nicely, one is from kata
http://www.kata-bags.com/productFRM2HS.asp...0&Version=Photo

the df series from kata is of very high quality and the size feels like it was designed to fit xz-1 in mind, and its uses the erm...how to say..the bulu bulu lekat type to close the pouch, has no zip to potentially scratch your camera(which i always been paranoia of),but its a bit expensive on most places, shasinki sells it at quite reasonable price though at 60+

another one i'm which i'm using is one from vantage(sort of ayam brand),its very cheap,i got it for 40(in a rush, din survey around),the quality is inferior to kata but the fabric uses for its construction is hard type and padding is quite thick, initial use xz-1 would have to squeeze through the opening a bit but will loosen up later. it too uses the bulu-bulu lekat thing for closing the pouch, which i always prefer,as the kata it too has an extra compartment for battery.i'll try to post some picture of this pouch later when my streamyx restored

I checked out that KATA DF-408 when I bought my XZ-1 but didn't get it because it's a very very ngam ngam type of fit so if we add the JJC auto-lenscap... then it won't fit in that KATA oledi.

yes, the filter is kinna offset but no gap actually since the filter sitting inside the "longkang" there and the gum is between the back of the filter and the "longkang". at least preventing sand & dust clogging the lens (as the seller said) plus i got extra 2 years warranty cos of that. smile.gif

Dunno man.. it seems kinda sketchy on part of what the seller told you.

Dust and lens won't usually masuk from the front element but from the gap between the extendable lens barrel.

While it's not day and night difference... especially to the untrained eye... but putting another layer of plastic/glass in front of the lens will affect the image quality.

So for dslr, we either use very good quality UV filter or nothing at all.

So far as I know, none of the reputable UV filter makers make something for compact cameras.

It is not offset, its like the filter is stick on the lens becos xz1 lens is very convex compared to other, so I insisted not to install the thing even I got rm60 offers and comes with screen protector. Summore I don't trust non reputable brand, I don't mind paying 100+ for a good brand rather than "keep" or digieye brand. Clearly I can see the gap there bro, gap between the filter and the longkang

I use both Photoscape for jpegs on my netbooks, office notebooks and Lightroom (3.4 to support XZ-1) for RAW at home.

There's usually lens profile for correction in Lightroom for dslr lens but there isn't one for XZ-1 although I didn't really find any cause for concern in terms of distortions or CA so far.

something to share with u guys,i notice with my unit was that the aperture shape was not completely even(when stop down),but my canon 50mm f1.4 lens aperture was not even as well, and they doesn't seems to have any effect on the image, stopping down with compact will hardly notice any bokeh anyway

another thing i notice was the sometime temperamental shutter button, would straight refocus the nex shoot(like over sensitive button)after u press the shutter button, but i did solve mostly this problem by applying some amount of pressure to the shutter button for a while(when the camera off)

What do you mean? unsure.gif

You can add to that list.... 1) lens ring could be a bit tighter.... 2)the mode dial needs to be tighter or a lock... 3) ND filter ON icon on the screen needs to be in RED

Got a few missed shots b'cos of the above.

This one didn't miss...

go to iauto mode, press ok and go to blur background option, play with your back dial to alter the background blur(this will directly change the aperture size on the spot),and look at the aperture under bright light

i think its ok although tats not excuse for manufacturer not to improve on this matter
i have 4 canon lens and mostly is not completely even as well(surprisingly my old cheapo 50mm f1.8 was perfect though)

It's ok la... I'm more concerned about the lens flare then bokeh quality tongue.gif

Need to find a practical lens "hood" solution di... had a few shots absolutely ruined by flare

Yeah... fully agree with it.

It's not a perfect and produces its best (and it's soooo brilliant at its best) with some basic understanding.

Ditto the bright light flare which is a major issue for streetlights...the crappy video, the jpeg smear, the mode dial too loose.

Also wanna add that they should have the ND filter on icon in red color instead. Too many times I've accidently left the ND on doh.gif

But it's still the best and only alternative for me.

The original leather case they quote me RM250, so expensive so I didn't take. Need to upgrade firmware?

BOEING sg.wang, One thing I dislike while I trying this camera the other day. Needs to change to Macro focus way too early.

I've got both the Gorillapod SLR Zoom and the small Gorillapod. Naturally the SLR is more stable but its also not pocketable... so either I don't bring either, or just keep the small gorillapod in my pocket.

Weird,i tried S95 the other day, since i've heard that people say while in recording mode cannot zoom worh.
But i tried it works well up to 4X too.
I tried Olympus XZ-1 also Hmm seems too big for one palm to take while S95 vry convenient.
My friend now making decision want to get S95 or XZ-1

If video is important... then get either the S95 or the LX5. XZ-1 video mode is super cacat wan.

i believe the 4x zoom in s95 you mentioned was the smart zoom features of s95,which will limit resolution when it zoom
get the s95 if size does matter most to him,get xz-1 if creativity in photography matter most to him

Just found this interesting bit on how to check shutter and flash count on the XZ-1

QUOTE
Basically the process goes:
1.) Hold the Menu button while turning the camera On
2.) Hit Menu and enter the display brightness setup. (Located under the Wrench. It looks like a TV)
You should now see the brightness adjustment bar on the right.
3.) Hold the Info button while pressing Ok
You should now see a black Olympus Screen
3.) Hit (in order) Up, Down, Left, Right, Shutter, Up
4.) Hit Right to see your shutter count R is the shutter count. S is the flash count. There's different info on each of the directions although I don't know if they mean anything useful for the XZ-1.
Just turn the camera off when you're done.

anyone knows whether wide-converter is compatible with xz-1?

Added on August 15, 2011, 3:39 pmThis shop from HK is selling in an amazing price with exclusively complete accessories. I'm attracted but I wonder about the reliability. :S

Oh by the way I think local shops selling from RM1399+ with some basic accessories though. Struggling to decide where to buy

i'm considering getting that as well but i dunno whether they can offer me without the 52mm filters onot as i have 52mm filters on my own already
i'm also interested in the auto lens cap, they are not overly priced which makes them attractive

just bought my XZ1 from digitalfm14 for RM1539 including a Sandisk Xtreme 16GM 30ms.

Head there with my mind set on the G12, but somehow the simpleness and design of the ZX1 change my mind.

Still charging it, will play with it tomorrow.

No experience in camera before, my camera before this is the Sony WX1.
