QUOTE(cocooh @ Dec 28 2010, 10:06 PM) The thing is , too many ppa's O.O not gonna list all again rite == Mint is working at fullest out of the box, you have the working restricted multimedia codecs i.e flash, libdvdcss, w32codecs, adobe... without any hassle to find link or additional ppa to get them to work.

Just to add some candy in the mouth, the Dedoimedo has announce the best distro of 2010 is QUOTE And the GRAND winner is ...
You haven't seen it listed above, but it would feature under the glorious title of best all-arounder. And that would have to be Linux Mint. While it did underperform in the spring, the autumn release is just splendid. It's a perfect 10 for the tenth release.
Linux Mint Julia has the best overall combination of ingredients. The best desktop theme and menu, the best combination of programs, the best package management. It's the most usable distribution out there, and it's just a pleasure to run.
Linux Mint Julia
Linux Mint is not afraid to be different. While it is based on Ubuntu, it uses its own set of programs, sticking to goodies like Thunderbird, Pidgin, GIMP, and others, without following the herd mentality of the social integration and application dumbefication.
Everything works out of the box, every little detail is carefully placed and designed, there's practically nothing bad you can think of. Upping this achievement is going to be really hard. But the title is well deserved.
Linux Mint Julia Compiz
Best distro of 2010: Linux Mint 10 Julia. Bravo! http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/best-distro-2010.htmlDedoimedo gained it's reputation among Linux lovers for it's good reviews of many distros for many years. Congrats to Linux Mint 10!

QUOTE(axxer @ Dec 30 2010, 01:21 PM) when u install liquorix thru synaptic or apt-get, it will refresh ur grub automatically.. and when u reboot it wiil appear in grub selection yea, I know it supposed to select the line in GRUB, but the things is I am using openSUSE's GRUB to manage the booting, being a legacy GRUB as opposed to GRUB2 used by LMDE I need to get the correct path of correct kernel and put it manually in openSUSE bootloader config. Unless I am installing back the LMDE's GRUB to make the selection. ayakkk... I hate playing with GRUB

QUOTE(GameSky @ Dec 30 2010, 08:40 PM) im using some unstable drivers last time n ubuntu 10.04 as well, but seems ubuntu 10.10 kinda always giving me trouble even using stable so comments on linux mint 10 julia anyone? I don't have any comments about 10.10 as I am not using it but most reviews on Julia says that it is most stable compare to it's parent, Maverick. Deidomeido has announced that Julia is best distro of 2010, the link I already posted into here few pages back. I already tried Julia and found it great, very friendly for newbies.

Seriously I don't see any significant improvements between this liquorix and the previous kernel, any benchmarks can we refer to?

QUOTE(G-17 @ Dec 30 2010, 10:48 PM) @Powerwoot. What was your previous kernel? LMDE uses the Testing kernel, currently frozen at 2.6.32, if I'm not mistaken. TBH, the 'vanilla' 2.6.32 kernel is a very good one. Without getting too technical, You'll only probably see benefits with Liquorix if you run a lot of apps that require a low-latency kernel. Liquorix has been know to be a good replacement for Real-Time kernels (think Ubuntu Studio or Studio 64 kernels). With regards to regular desktop performance, the main difference is that with Liquorix, the order of services run is a bit different. Also, Liquurix seems to run more services/tasks (on boot) concurrently, while Debian's "vanilla" kernel tends to complete large tasks in batches, which in turn causes some other services to take ages to complete (if you ever ran wicd, you'll know what I'm talking about). Also, with Liquorix and other 2.6.36 kernels, you can do this http://techpatterns.com/forums/about1687.htmlNote: Only do it if you undestand what cgrouping is all about. I take no responsibility if you break your system. Previous kernel was 2.6.32-5, that is why I am asking about the significant improvements over the vanilla. Anyway, I am just want to test out the liquorix which doesn't necessary mean I want to make it permanently running. Since it is running smoothly with my LMDE without any problem, I'll try it until the Stable release reach our shore.

QUOTE(G-17 @ Dec 30 2010, 11:06 PM) @Powerwoot I edited the second part of my post, so you might want to read it again. Also, is there ever going to be a "Stable" release of LMDE? It's based on Debian Testing, so labeling it as Stable would seem a bit oxymoronic, unless they plan to freeze it at Squeeze. Yes, it's only the labeling. Most of you should already know that even Debian Unstable is more stable than 90% of distros out there. Stability is the Debian motto. hmm.. many things to be read through. In fact I am still reading from the link given by axxer just now. The arguments between damentz with others, am amused but find it informative. About LMDE stable, I don't know what in the head of Mint's developer. They've done so many things and make it better. LMDE Stable? why not. Added on December 30, 2010, 11:22 pmwow, even Linus himself impressed! this is what I want to read more. This post has been edited by powerwoot: Dec 30 2010, 11:22 PM
