That's quite impressive, especially considering that Ubuntu is not even 10 years old yet. tongue.gif

yerpp, me ordered the CDs, download the ISOs.... from a version into the another for years and not even once managed to be installed and run. haha

Since so many users are using ubuntu, from their reviews and perspective I don't find too difficult to understand about ubuntu and how it works, the basics at least nod.gif

try looking around in KDE-Look.org nod.gif

well I just happened to have some leftover themes from my KDE 4.5, so it all got carried over to KDE 4.6 laugh.gif

also in System Settings you can pick "Get New..." ranging from system colors, window decs, plasma themes, icons, plus a ton of others I lost count already laugh.gif KDE will then load the database from KDE-Look.org and you can install straight from there. nod.gif

I see, off-line preinstall themes no more, no wonder. Will try it at home. Thanks.

nouveau is the default driver for vga?  hmm.gif i think i not installed the nouveau into my laptop
*
When we are using nvidia chipset for our vga, the default driver is nouveau which came together with most distros nowadays. This is free and open source driver. If we are going to use proprietary nvidia driver, command parameters in kernel need to be insert such as 'nomodeset'. This to make way to the proprietary driver to be installed successfully,

QUOTE(G-17 @ Apr 28 2011, 05:22 PM)
Hi guys.
I haven't been around for the last couple of weeks, so I apologize if I missed any questions addressed to me. Just let me know if I missed anything.
Also, I have a question.
Any of you guys run Linux on new Sandy Bridge chipsets? I'm building a rig, and am wondering if I should bother adding an Nvidia card. I don't play games, and the only use for a gfx card would be VDPAU acceleration for HD videos, but seeing as the new Core i5/7 chipsets already have very decent acceleration, I'm thinking a separate GPU isn't needed.

I know early Sandy Bridge performance was buggy, but I'll be getting a mobo with an updated BIOS/UEFI (after the recent recall) and will also be running a new kernel.

Can someone kindly point me to some Sandy Bridge reviews for Linux that are NOT from Phoronix? (I don't hate Phoronix, but I'm more interested in daily real world usage, not isolated benchmarks)

Thanks in advance.

G! as per my sig, everything just perfect on suse and I don't see any slight issues with it. My mobo does not have any visual port to try the built-in video accelerator, so I don't have any say on that. Currently using nvidia proprietary certified driver for my card thumbup.gif

Thanks for the info, PowerMan~!!
Didn't notice your sig before this. Have to say, that's a mighty nice Power Supply Unit you have there.
I'm probably getting a Seasonic X-560W for this new rig I'm building. Seasonic FTW!! biggrin.gif

The PSU bought from one of the seller here in LYN at the price of RM3xx, a derivative model from PC Power and Cooling model Silencer 750 Quad (Black) very quiet PSU I can say. Since this model is not a modular, got so many unused cables that needed to rolls here and there.

wow, I am always on 100% CPU usages but I am on fold which is understandable. But for almost 80% of usages without folding, something is so bad running at the background.

Anyone can guide me, what i need to do to install the AMD Proprietary driver? Seem that my Radeon card is not working with the radeon open source driver.

It always hang everytime i try to switch to discrete. doh.gif

Long time story, running fglrx in linux is pita... that was few years ago when I am using an ATI card for my GC. I don't know if fglrx now is far improved from my hell experienced with it. But still, read some comments that installing Radeon driver is no better, some complaining desktop effect so laggy, 3D is good but video playback is jerky... well only Radeon users in linux can tell better.

For me, nvidia ftw! not really I am a fan to green, but nvidia simplifies the driver for linux users. I am using every latest nvidia driver released by them.

Yes I am
CODE
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GTX 560 Ti/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 4.1.0 NVIDIA 270.41.19

But so far no CPU spikes, everything just perfect. icon_rolleyes.gif

Martin Wilke of FreeBSD is in Malaysia now, he is working here and married to Malaysian. Most likely he'll lead the Malaysia BSD community which is I think is very good.
