im interested in a rabbit so im doing a lil bit of research before i commit. went to a few petshops to look at cage/food/bedding/accessories. got a few questions...

1. cage with flat vs wired flooring? high vs wide?
i read wired (with padding) would be better so droppings can be separated. is this ok? the one in the shop is longer.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

2. food/bedding/water
- the petshop near my place has beh&yo and oxbrow products. they also gave me a booklet by beh&yo on rabbits to read. how much pellets do i give each time? which water is better? tap/boiled/filtered (diamond). when/how often/much do i give veg/fruits?

3. thunder/lightning ohmy.gif
- im stayin in a dbl sty terrace hse and my place has a lot thunder/lightning every evening for past few weeks. where should i put the cage, upstairs or downstairs? would it help if i use cloth (fleece?) to cover? how do i keep it calm? cos the sound is VERY loud.

4. one vs two? b vs d? spay/neuter?
- would it be ok it to just have one? im not sure if i can handle 2. not settled on buck or doe....is there a difference besides gender? i dont want to breed them just strictly as pets...if i maintain one should i still spay/neuter?

5. pests
- we have a very very very smart rat. havent been able to catch it. wont take the bait (cage/glue). bite thru everything (non)/edible. OPENING bag ZIPPERS!!! is there a way i can get rid/make it stay away? rclxub.gif

i had hamsters long long ago. started with a pair then adopted 3 more from a friend who went overseas and the family grew to 13 sweat.gif . it was a lot of work so i gave away all except original pair until they died. cry.gif miss the times when they slept like dead logs...sniffing/licking my fingers...biting the bars wanting attention. not to forgot the noise from the wheel every night training for marathon... cry.gif

sorry for long post. jus want to clear some doubts....

the one u picture would be a nightmare for u if u buy the rabbit like my second rabbit, u need to clean it many times a day due to waste and wetness.
*
i've thought abt that too.
if i put in my room then that would be better cos the floor is parquet.
if wired cages will be a bit hard...
my house has lack of space and theres wires all over no suitable spot for me to have a playpen only supervised playtime outside cage.

consider this type of cage
*
the pet shop has this type...didnt have a good look of all the cages cos they were on the top shelves. my options are still open.

QUOTE(madfag @ Apr 28 2011, 08:04 AM)
once you've bought a rabbit, you'd better leave him/her in the cage for two to three days. it might be tempting to let it out to play but you should toilet train him/her right from the very start.
*
yup. i've read about that. try not to touch it for few days.
leave it in cage and let it familiarise with surroundings first.

another thing...the girl giving away is from ampang. im from pj.
i'll be taking lrt (dont have a car).
what is the best way to bring it back? do i need to get a carrying bag? or padded box?
how do i minimise the stress?

a box with some holes for it to breathe, then put some hay for it to munch while you carry him around. make sure you put enough newspaper, so long ride, confirm pee one. lol.
maybe u can opt for the jolly rabbit super home.
i think it will be quite convenient for you to clean compared to the RM60 wired cage. u can google and see the pictures
*
i'll prob put a plastic bag as the bottom layer then cloth and newspapers. dont want it to soak thru the box in the lrt...
i googled but size quite small....not sure if they have other sizes.
i think i'll get the wired ones then.

Yeah, those Jolly Rabbit Super Home cages are really neat but are SO pricey. Any idea where I can get a Jolly Rabbit Super Home(JP88) which doesn't go beyond RM200?
*
QUOTE(zenix @ Apr 28 2011, 11:25 PM)

i got my rabbit on saturday!!! HE's a normal mix. hasnt got a name yet. any suggestions? rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif rclxms.gif
there were 4 of them but only he came over to sniff my hand. the others were too busy eating or lying down not bothered.
so we decided to take him. tho my dad said hes not " as white" and a bit "dirty" looking. i dont know how much "whiter" he wants it to be. doh.gif

placed him in the porch near the garden where i can always see him.
so far hes eating lots of hay and drinking. hanged hay box outside but he dragged everything out. hay was everywhere.
the box is inside the cage now. he can also sense when i open the door to add hay, he'll stay by the box.
he pees at one corner so i tried putting the toilet tray there but didnt work cos he went to another corner. rclxub.gif doh.gif
so i put some hay on the tray. now hes peeing at the tray and his "normal" corner. it hasnt gone out of the cage tho.
he has a small block of carrot in the evenings.

one thing is he prefers the hay leaves. how do it get him to eat the stalk too?

its been 2 weeks now. snowball (thats his name. tho my dad calls him meatball doh.gif ) has a very big appetite. eat poop sleep thats his routine.
he about 60% litter trained. he still poos in and outside the litter tray but mostly pees in the litter tray. less cleaning.
he also knows how to go back to his cage to do his business. havent had any accidents YET. thumbup.gif rclxms.gif
he's scared of lightning and thunders so he'll snuggle up to me but when the skies are clear he'll start exploring.
i feel like im being used...but i dont mind laugh.gif

You're doing great....
thanks.
one other thing.
today when i was cleaning the cage, i saw his poop has bits of fur...its was around it like mold growing, a bit "furry".
but when he ate and poop just now it looks normal.
is this ok?

During molting season your rabbit may ingest some fur while grooming. Give him more Timothy Hay and papaya tablets to help with digestion. Also make sure you groom him often to remove the fur so that he does not ingest them too much.

monitoring his poop to see if theres anymore. so far no.
which is better, the comb or brush? hes got short fur.
hes about 3 months and still on alfalfa. should i mix a little bit of timothy?

i thinks hes sleeping cos they say rabbit sleep with their eyes open and his nose was not twitching.
his paws are not so stained. comb his fur every night to get the tangled/loose fur out.
i've converted my dad brows.gif ...he even goes inside petshops to look at rabbits which he NEVER did. we saw a mini rex (i think its a castor) for rm880 and i pointed the star/sulcata tortoise had the same price. he say better to get the rabbit. Hes TELLING me to get another, im thinking about it but i told him if he wants it then hes got to take care of it. 1 is enough for me, i can barely go after him sweat.gif . imagine two running on opposite ends! rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

I read that for bunnies below 6 mths should be fed with alfafa hay so I went to buy some. But my bunny has been focusing on eating his pellets only. He finished the hay that was packed with him when I carried him home but hasn't touched the alfafa. What should I do???
Maybe you can go back to the shop and ask for some, if not ask for the brand/type and get a small bag. The hay that you bought might be new to him.
Mix both hay but slowly add more of your hay and less of what the shop gives. Thats what i did.

its not easy to bring a new rabbit into an existing rabbit's territory. i fear that the new rabbit might get bullied or they might fight. you might wanna do a full research if you really wanna do it.

i tried doing it once and i failed. its very tough work. new baby rabbit always gets bullied by my older rabbit.
*
i've read about it. some were successful and some werent.
my current is about 3.5 months and i've had it for exactly a month.
im still thinking about it cos i need to weigh the pros n cons.
bad = anor setup, more upkeep, spay/neuter = more costs
good = MORE LOVE

unless you can commit alot of time and follow all the proper steps, i suggest you dont get another one. but its your choice smile.gif
*
i admit its very tempting...but when i let snowball out i know why i got one cos i always end up tired.
hes so hyper. jumping sliding sometimes he even knocks into furniture but that wont stop him.
and when he binky hes up in the air. i worry he might hurt himself.
speaking about time i have a year before i graduate. i won't have much time if i decide to join an accounting firm.
so im sticking to one.

hes sleeping after eating.

i bought the oxbow papaya tablets. how do you get the rabbit to eat?
i cut into quarters. he only smell but didnt touch.

i went to a pet shop in a shopping mall today and asked if they had anything for hairballs in rabbit.
the guy showed me laxative for cats... ohmy.gif and he said you can use for rabbits also.
but i wasnt sure about laxative for rabbits so i just left.

do rabbits groom often? cos im not sure if mine is itching or is just grooming. he licks himself all the time.
after i carry/touch him. when hes on the toilet tray. after he eats/drinks.
he'll be lying down (even sleeping) then suddenly gets up and start licking.
he does have a licking fetish tho. he licks floors, sofa, chair/table legs, grill door, cage (not bite, you can see the tongue goin round), even walls. the amount of dust he has inside him now.... rclxub.gif

hes got 3 dot size "blood clot" on his left ear from scratching i think. i looked into his ears but didnt see anything. i trimmed his nails on thurs so maybe the nails were still "rough" when he scratched them? or he scratched until it bled?

mine will push anything in his way too.
his motto - if at first it wont move, BITE.
he will bite everything. he havent bite me YET but my pants/shirt.
if you lying/sitting down he will climb all over you.

Snowball is actually a FEMALE. I took it to the pet shop to have its nails cut and the woman said its a female.
Today I was carrying it and felt some "lumps". They look like pimples. I'm guessing those are nipples?

Her/his behavior has also changed. Biting anything/everything the teeth can get.
Is there a way i can prevent this? I tried vinegar but no use.

I've change the position of the cage so that it can go in and out of the house a bit more freely.

Hi rabbit lovers, I am new to rearing rabbits. Got a pair of 2 months old mix breed last week. Find this link really informative, thanks to all of you.
Can someone tell me how to start on toilet training?
*
welcome...im still "new" at this too.
im not sure how others did theirs. i'm using a cage so i did the following:
1. observe where they pee. put the toilet there.
2. use cloth/tissue and wipe the pee (yes, its disgusting) and put in the toilet. put some poo too. i hang hay above to get it to sit there.
3. when the bedding is soiled (i use bedding) CHANGE.
i change mine every 2-3 days cos mine will pee BESIDE the toilet (into hay bowl!!! doh.gif ) when it gets too dirty.
they will still poo outside the toilet but will mostly poo & pee in the toilet.

im not sure about expending their play + toilet area. mine is just the hall area and the cage is at the door.
it has free access to cage and hall so it will always go back to the cage (it knows the way back). thumbup.gif rclxms.gif

Thx for the tips Ally. My rabbits are caged too (I let them run around the garden twice a day) and I have also put a litter tray with beddings (wood shavings), they  pee & poo inside the tray and outside as well. However they like to throw out all the wood shavings. They also like to sleep in the tray. I wash the tray daily and put in fresh shavings, frustrated to see them end up in the tray below the cage (used to collect their litter). Maybe I should put those plastic mat on top of the shavings in the litter box to avoid the rabbits throwing them out.
*
no problem. maybe you can make one like this. DIY litter tray
its best if theres a mat on top then the feet wont get soiled and wont kick the bedding out.
pine and cedar wood shavings are not good. not sure about other types.
i use paper based cos last longer only haf to pick-out poo daily (or not tray full of poo). mine eat a lot = poop a lot rclxub.gif .
