Just adopted a holland lop. His skin is not looking good. Areas of matted fur n some alr infected. One of his front leg looks hurt. Broght him to the vet. It seems he has skin infection due to the matted hair which has been pulled out of the roots and his front leg is broken and has healed itself. So he will have a limp.
Ive 2 baby rabbits of diff breed. Is it ok to mix them? Im scared they will gaduh.
Plus, any supplements for the lops fur? Special food maybe? Currently feeding him britter bunny n timothy hay (he doesnt eat alot. Unlike the baby rabbits..Hmm) and daily green vege n occationally carrots. The vet shaved some of his fur off. So he looks very kesian now. sad.gif

as for food, give him Genesis.
Its strongly recommended for fur and prevent hairball.
I've given my bunnies for a year and i am satisfied with it.
for britter bunny, its actually one of cheap pellet that can relief their hunger.
i keep 3kg of britter bunny in my store just for backup.
my primary pellet is still Genesis.
if u have more money, u can go for Oxbow biggrin.gif

I can't really make out the 'horn' on the nose from your photo. but from the symptoms that you described:
- hair loss
- crusts forming on skin

it *may* be a case of mange infection. basically caused by parasitic microscopic insects infesting their skin. the crust that forms is the waste material produced over time by the mites. try spreading the fur on the nose area, and see if there's any buildup of crust there or not. nose, legs and ears are common areas for mange infection to start at

more information here, along with another vet in Puchong that you can look at: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=66359549

Thanks! smile.gif

Already brought him to St Angel, Puchong yesterday. Luckily the treatment is only weekly injection which I still need to take my rabbit for 3 more times.
Hopefully he will get well soon, so sad looking at his read leg which already showing red skin around the ankle.

8 weeks old (700gram+ if i remember correctly)

One of the latest, almost 6mths old (didnt weight but definitely more than 1kg LOL) she used to be less than half d size of d plastic home that she is in
user posted image

Her size almost tripled compared to the time i got her when she is 5weeks old tongue.gif

A size comparison of bunnies from d net

As for d species that is easier to tame, i think have read that it's holland lop but it actually depends on that particular bunny. They are like humans and comes with different personalities. Mine likes to run around and do not like being cuddled nor to even sit on my lap but damn smart for sure LOL

I've not have any experience with broken bones before, so I really cannot comment on that.

on the skin infection, useful things to keep around are:
- saline solution. get the big bottle of contact lens liquid from tesco. quite cheap. this is useful for cleaning the skin, and also for softening up matted fur.  also very useful for cleaning the areas around their eyes. useful for cleaning any wounds too. saline solution is not as painful as cleaning with water, and this is personal experience from cleaning my own cuts and scratches tongue.gif
- cotton balls for cleaning. ie. wet the cotton ball with the saline solution.

the vet should have given you some antibiotic cream for the skin infection right? make sure to use that

fur shaved off can grow back wan, so don't worry about that. most important of all right now is to handle the skin infection first.

for the food, you can try some better quality food. fur condition will improve a lot with a better diet. but control the amount of greens and carrots though. you can probably add in some rolled oats into the diet too.

rabbits of a different breeds getting along, it really depends on how you bond them. if both are males then its more difficult (fighting to see who's the boss) unless you neuter them.

Thanks for the infos. For food i will look for the one u recommend. In JB not many shops sell rabbit supply. So quite hard to find variety.

For now i wont be mixing the rabbits. Coz the lop seem to be 'interested' in the babies n r trying to mate??? With em... looked scary so i separated them. Currently in 2 cages. N i let them out to play separately.

The doc gave an antibiotic cream which im applying twice daily on the infected areas. For nw he is free from matted hair coz i sent him for grooming n all was taken care of.

Question for experts, is it normal for bunnies to change colour as the mature? My lil oatbun's fur changes colour from brown to very dark brown (almost black) in a very noticeable way, less than 10 days. Is it bcoz of d change of food from alfafa to timothy?

Oatbun should be ok because my rabbit changed fur color too when I graduate him to carrot as snack. From shiny black, he grew white fur on the butt and grey fur at random parts of the body. He is less than 1yo.

Hi All,

Anyone knows where to get good and nice rabbit huts? I wanted to place my rabbits in the garden so they'll have a lot of space to run around. But i need to give them a shelter just in case rain. I don't want to ruin my garden with ugly looking cages. I want nice sophisticated huts. Any place to recommend?

Hi agheng,

In Malaysia, very seldom people will spend $$$ on outdoor huts for rabbits. The market is not there. But you can try search for some dog cages/huts. Some of it, might suit for rabbits. Or you DIY.

But is it a must to put them in the garden permanently? With the heat or rain here, don't think the rabbits will like it outdoor. Do reconsider.
Thanks smile.gif

PLC? Harrington is PLC's own inhouse brand. They will promote their own brand to every customer. For me, I think Genesis is better because it is Timothy and Alfalfa Hay based and it is very good for my rabbits. My rabbits after consuming Genesis have very nice, thick, soft fur as Genesis has Omega 3&6. If you see the ingredient list for Harrington pellets, the main ingredients are wheat and oat which are grains. Personally I think that is not good as that is not really natural food for rabbit as compared to Timothy & Alfalfa hay in Genesis.

PLC imported Harrington themselves and sell it in Singapore as well as here in Malaysia. That is why you can only find Harrington in PLC, not other petshops.

Yup I use and I sell Genesis. I don't know anyone who give Harrington to their rabbit. Have tried many other brands of rabbit feed but prefer Genesis because it gives me the best result (sent my rabbit for an ARBA competition once and a judge commented my rabbit's fur very soft like baby rabbit's fur. enough said. hehe!). You feeding Genesis currently?
