good point. just to add to that, play the guitar first unplugged.Read it somewhere in Godin's website that an electric guitar is essentially a complicated acoustic guitar.
the pick ups only amplify the sound that comes out from the guitar's wood. so if the guitar already sounds sweet unplugged, when it's plugged, it'll sound better.
Steve Vai also commented that the tone of the wood from the neck and body should sound similar to get a nice tone from the guitar. How do you test it? Simply tap on the neck and body's wood. the good ones sound similar.
