QUOTE(wha7ever @ Nov 23 2010, 09:20 AM) ahpingko: I don't like to use anything F6.3 and above for sure when shooting dinner, unless it's group shots. All depends on the ceiling "height" of the venue, if it's low then just set your flash to bounce with everything auto is pretty much sufficient. Adjust flash compensation if needed (if you don't plan to fiddle with full manual controls). oh...that place should be moderately high...what if i wan to point my flash directly to the person with diffuser attached??..F4 with iso 800 should be ok right?..and auto flash.. QUOTE(shootkk @ Nov 23 2010, 09:21 AM) No need f8. Try F5.6 or F4 if your lens can support it. ISO 1600 or ISO 1000 to ISO 1250 if you cam can support it and up the EV to +0.33. Flash to auto. iso 800 cant?..later i try..

ahpingko: Forgot one thing for flash bounce. If the ceiling is not dark in color then okay, if it's dark in color... how low also no use because it absorb all your lights If point your flash directly using TTL is okay but tends to be flat. All depend on how bright the environment is and etc.

Not to say ISO 800 cannot but a higher ISO will make it easier for you to blend in the ambient light and make your pic more balanced in terms of lighting. It will help you to avoid the flash in front bright but background dark kinda pics. You're using A550 for heaven's sake! Why so afraid to use ISO 1000 or ISO 1600? It's clean. Upping your EV will also help you reduce noise. You've seen my Macau shots have you not? ALL indoors shots are done using ISO 1000. Do you think those pics are noisy? The A850 is rated BELOW the A550 in terms of noise handling mind you.

QUOTE(zstan @ Nov 23 2010, 10:34 AM) errrr....try point a few directions la...explore yourself.. Agree... Go early. Try a few shots before the moment. Get a tip from the manager on how the event will go. I will normally use F5.6, 1/60, ISO400/800 & flash on auto mode.

eddybeh : From where you heard that? The Minolta 50mm f1.4 and the Sony 50mm f1.4 is essentially the same optically except for newer coatings. The Minolta have a better build comparatively.
The 50mm f1.7 is a great budget lens if you can find a good copy. Wide open it's a little soft but it's razor sharp once you stop down to f2. If you're considering FF then the 50mm f1.7 is as good as any if you don't really need to go down all the way to f1.4 all the time.
If you're not going FF then the Sony 50mm f1.8 may be a better buy. It's new and has warranty and you get newer coatings and better bokeh compared to the 50mm f1.7
