Pros and Sifu,
Noob here, may i know if the Torch will get hot if going through a lot of internet usage? Cause my friends' Galaxy S and SL...all get super hot after surfing the net. Thanks |

It would get warm with heavy data usage. Fortunately its soft rubber texture is still pleasant to hold when warm.

Greetings BBians!
My company had just recently announced for all staff to use BlackBerry and I can't seem to decide between the Bold 9780 and Torch. Im currently using Nokia E72 and switching to the Bold 9780 would seem like the logical choice...but I think the Torch has to be one of the best looking phones I've seen! I've been surfing the net for reviews...from what I've read and my own observations, I noticed several things and I've some questions that I hope the BB sifus here can help. BB Torch + Great looks, solid build quality + Large screen (larger than Bold, I assume better internet surfing experience) + Touch screen and qwerty keyboard, best of both worlds (I also read the OS6 UI is slightly better on a touch screen device) + Looks great! (Did I mention that already??) - Crappy battery life (some say great, some disagree...I'll be using mine mostly for work, calls, sms and some internet. No music player or vid for me. Can someone gimme an idea how long would a fully charged battery last? Im getting min 3 days with my Nokia E72...really hate it when batt cant even last one full day. - Processor under par compared to similar priced devices in the market. My Nokia E72 is running on abt 600MHz and I feel its kinda slow sometimes especially when Im in a hurry and trying to open an app. What worries me is...Torch is also running along that speed! - Bulky and heavy (well not an issue for me, Ive held it in my hands before and no complains! BB Bold 9780 + Great keyboard + Good battery life (at least better than Torch and this is something everyone seems to agree!) - Looks very much like its predecessors...not to say its ugly, but can hardly tell the old from new models. - Smaller screen (Im sure surfing internet/reading mails is a more pleasureable experience using Torch) - Quite thick for a bar phone (14mm) Apart from the above observations, the questions I have about BlackBerrys are: - Can I edit MS Word, Excel, etc? (Some say can only view, need to purchase something else to be able to edit??) - Is it true that BB have compatibility issues with email attachments? Some say can't open PDF files? - Is it compatible with .jar files? I do quite a lot of reading with my current Nokia E72. - Which telco provides better BB service? Maxis or Celcom? Dont mind if its more expensive...billed under co - How can I avoid those ghastly looking ones that has tattoos of Vodafone, AT&T or whatever else? - Anyone have any clue when is Bold 9900 and Torch 2 due to arrive our shores? That's pretty much it for now...all the sifus out there...hope to hear from you... |

That's pretty much it for now...all the sifus out there...hope to hear from you... - If you don't surf too much and use EDGE (2G) instead of 3G, can last 1-2 days. But BB is always connected under BIS (constant internet), so it won't last more than 2 days. - Processor wise, don't worry, its OS is good, 600MHz is enough. You would definitely find it more responsive than E72. - Can't say much about bulkiness, I don't use a torch. Bold: - Can edit, using Docs2Go. Supports docs, docsx, excel sheets, powerpoint. It's a paid app for full function, but you know where. - No problem with email attachments, PDF can be viewed in Docs2Go. - not sure about .jar files, never run it in my bold before. - buy from maxis/celcom/digi or any brightstar reseller, local ori set won't have tattoos. - Will be released in US in september but not sure when will it reach malaysia. Telco: Since you said $ is not an issue, by all means, Maxis. Celcom has the best coverage but many complained that the speed sucks. Not sure is it the same with postpaid. Digi, intermediate achiever, ok coverage and ok speed. Maxis has slightly less coverage than celcom but the speed is good. Stable too. I guess that's all you need to know. I chose bold > torch because I rely on the qwerty too much, I don't like to slide out whenever I type. Since I use an app called Quicklaunch, I launch apps simply by using hotkeys from the qwerty, I no longer access the redundant menu. So qwerty is crucial for me. |

QUOTE(zellleonhart @ Jul 31 2011, 02:47 AM) Regarding torch: Thanks a lot zellleonhart! That was most helpful. Just to share...Im an existing Maxis postpaid user and I've had some bad experience calling my friend who's using Torch with Celcom...and out of 10 calls, it gets disconnected more than half the time. I cant be entirely sure why...but I dont have such problem calling anyone else on any other network. - If you don't surf too much and use EDGE (2G) instead of 3G, can last 1-2 days. Well I never used celcom before simply because I don't have many friends using celcom (less than 10 in my contact list) so yeah. Since you're an existing Maxis postpaid user, just head over maxis centre and add the bis plan. If you don't stream youtube and tether using your phone, the lowest plan (BIS Lite, RM40) is enough. The 250mb is for streaming and tethering, other apps and surfing under BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) is considered unlimited. Alternatively you can take up to BIS 55 (500mb for streaming/tether) or up to BIS 90 (3GB) since it's your company paying anyway. |

QUOTE(zellleonhart @ Jul 31 2011, 03:25 AM) That explains how good is celcom's network? Yeah, its a shame when they have the best coverage in m'sia. Don quite get the package being offered. Firstly, we're told to subscribe to BIS+BES...no idea what are those. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I read somewhere that a BB device is pretty much useless...and can only be used for calls and texts without BIS....cant even connect to Wi-Fi without it I heard. So, in other words...BIS is a must for BB device to be properly utilised. And err...BES is for corporate email accessibility (exchange and such?). Man I gotta get myself updated in technologies! Secondly, yes I'll be tethering as well. So I suppose it makes sense to go for BIS90 3GB...I heard Maxis charges a bomb once u exceed 3GB while Celcom offers a 5GB limit before additional charges apply. And best of all, I heard Digi dont even charge a sen even when u exceed 3GB, but u'll feel the significant loss of speed. That means my monthly subscription (assuming Im going with Maxis) will be RM90.00 (BIS90) + RMXX (Value XX for phone calls)...correct? |

Regarding BES, I am not sure whether the BIS 90 plan carries it or not, or how to subscribe BES because me as a normal user don't need BES, so I don't know much about it..Okay now this is where it gets all kinda blurry for me. And yes, BB is pretty much useless if you don't have BIS activated. Facebook app, twitter, bbm all works under BIS. There's a way to use wifi to BBM and use apps, but you must at least have the service books in your BB first. The service books is automatically pushed to your bb when you have a BIS plan. So, in short, if you never have bis plan activated, you can never use wifi for bbm and apps. If you have activated the bis plan, you off it and use wifi, then it's okay because the service books are already there. -- Yes, if you exceed 3GB (that's for tethering n streaming) you will get charged accordingly (1sen/kb). Digi only throttle your speed after quota. Your monthly bill for maxis is as you calculated... RM90 + XX (calls, sms) provided you don't exceed the quota. |

Whether Torch is good or not is very subjective. We have this discussion so many times already. If you're used to qwerty keypad like the Bold, better off with another upgraded Bold.
Torch on another hand is for those who loves touchpad but want BB features at the same time. Or want both touchpad and qwerty pad. |

Yeah, I get what you mean...honestly, I personally feel using a qwerty keypad is much better than tapping on-screen, no matter how great the response and sensitivity. I think the Bold is a very business oriented phone...no frills, no bull****...with arguably one of the best qwerty keypad in the market. Its like a legend in its class...Torch on another hand is for those who loves touchpad but want BB features at the same time. Or want both touchpad and qwerty pad. However, one of the main reasons Im also considering Torch is the bigger screen which undoubtedly makes browsing and emails a better experience compared to Bold...IMHO. As I've mentioned Im currently using Nokia E72 and browsing with a screen that size is pretty annoying to me...and from what I see, the Bold 9780 is roughly about the same size too. |

Looks like Im now in the same boat you were once in!! hhaha!I think its better if you go and try the phone before deciding. If it werent for my friends, I would just buy the new Bold as its already well-proven. Well, a close friend of mine uses the Torch and I had the pleasure of fondling it before. However I must say that was about 3mths ago and I wasnt planning to get a BB then, thus I didnt really tested it. I remember snapping a couple of shots with the camera to compare against my Nokia E72...and yeah, the Torch looks and feels solidly built. Altho Im not a fan of the iphone, somehow I used to have this idea that only Apple makes proper touch screen and the rest of the players in the market are simply not in the same league..but I must say that the Torch's touchscreen is pretty impressive! Its probably not as good as the iphone, but it works well enough for me. Unfortunately I dont know anyone using a Bold 9780 and I only saw it once at Maxis centre...which sadly is only a dummy set! But from the reviews I've been reading off the internet..let's just say I havent come across anyone who regret getting the Bold 9780. This post has been edited by khopl: Aug 1 2011, 11:53 PM |
