I've tried NSFU, works great. Tried SIms as well but because of lack of multitouch, camera rotation isn't possible. I'm still using stock setting with phone(lazy to press buttons Not much noticeable lag.Check with terminal which app using most resource & close it.Sometimes incompatible app could slow down the entire OS too.

Seriously man...I never seen any "not enough memory' error in my N900 after 7 months of heavy usage.Even if the memory seems not enough N900 won't show any error instead process things very slowly.
Remember that N900 have 256MB RAM + 768MB swap memory.Enough to run almost any mobile apps.
