My wife just gave birth to a baby girl this morning (11th May) at Hospital University(PPUM) - new building. The place is very clean(maybe it's new) and the nurses are all okay(not rude as i have read from other forum). In fact one of the pregnant lady told me that i have come to the right hospital with all the complete equipments. She has been staying there for almost a month now due some pregnancy complication. She did mention that some complicated pregnancy patients were refered to this hospital from other hospitals.

I'm still deciding between sunway medical and columbia puchong, anybody has any info on both hospitals? price doesn't matter, only concern on environment, nurses(i dont like people talking rude to me), service and facilities. I heard columbia puchong is with better environment cos the hospital is still new but in comparison the nurses there are quite junior, whereas sunway medical is kinda congested(which i dont really like it) but the nurses there are more experienced and more senior. Hmm... still thinking, appreciate your advise very much ^.^

Hi Chloe,

I have been to both hospitals before for checkups. At Sunway, my OB-GYN was Dr. Wong Chin Yuan, he's a highly-praised OBGYN there (even won himself an award or sth). But my final decision goes to Dr. Silvam at Columbia Asia Puchong. I have also had experience with Dr. Ng Soon Pheng before, I will tell you about it later.

Reasons for choosing CA over Sunway:

1) Appointment system sucks at Sunway. You can only make appointments either for Morning session or Afternoon session. Once you register, you're on first come first serve basis, this I understand, but the queue is always super long and places to sit are v. limited. Whereas, at CA, you can call in and say you need to make an appointment at 1130am, they will quickly check if the slot is OK. Very efficient.
2) Parking space is limited at Sunway. It's a more popular medical centre compared to CA, so you can imagine ppl are always fighting for parking spaces.
3) Sunway has more F&B outlets for sure, but CA is smaller and doesn't take you many floors to get to your OBGYN.
4) Delivery cost wise,CA has better price. That's for sure.

Nurse wise: I won't say that CA has the best nurses in Malaysia, some of them are quite inexperienced actually. But as long as you get yourself a good OBGYN, you wont see bad nurse as one of the important factors to decide which hospital to go to.

Now, about Dr. Silvam. He's a v. down-to-earth OB-gyn who respects his patient's decision on delivery options. I had always wanted to have Vaginal birth. He made it happen for me. Smooth and fast. In less than 2 hours, from dilating until delivery, everything was smooth, without Epidural. He did not even persuade me to give in to Epidural, and said that he's very proud of me for NOT taking it. The whole bill ended up 3000 for 3 days 2 nights in private room for both baby and I.

Dr. Ng Soon Pheng on the other hand, was an unpleasant encounter for me. My first visit to him, he told me that C-section is the safest delivery option for women. I told him I would not want a C-section, if I had a chance to deliver baby naturally, but he kept persuading me vaginal birth is risky and dangerous. Later on, he explained to me 4D baby scan is 100% harmless to babies. I don't know how true that is. Anyway, I never go back to him.

Hope this information helps!

Wow, thanks for your information dear, indeed it helps =D but i'm not choosing the gynae but the hospital, i've been doing my check ups in puchong Chia & Loo Women Clinic and I think i will let Dr.Loo handle my delivery, just that i need to choose the hospital, i do hear lots of good comments on CA so i think i will go for CA, moreover it is much nearer to my house compare to Sunway Medical, parking easy, not too congested, no traffic jam, easy to get single room(cos i dont like sharing room with others), environment better(new hospital).

After studying in PPUM for the past 3+ years, I would advise people NOT TO COME if they have a choice.

Why? First of all, this is a university hospital, and that equates to STUDENTS. It is unfair to the students if you refuse to be clerked/examined/delivered by students (they're the ones in the white coats with clipboards) especially if it's in the middle of the night and the doctors on-call are in OT or handling a risky case. Students are required to deliver babies and we have been trained to do so.

#2: The new wing is currently understaffed and underutilized. Yes, we can fit more people in, but we still have the same number of staff.

#3: PPUM gets a lot of referrals for high-risk pregnancies, so if suddenly when you're labouring and another person who has a high-risk pregnancy is in labour at the same time, please don't get angry if the obgyn on-call goes to see that other patient first. This is assuming that there is only one high-risk case at the time. On a bad day, you may only see housemen and students until the time of delivery >_<

So it's your choice really. What's good about delivering in PPUM is that there are better facilities and specialists, especially when compared to government hospitals. Risky pregnancies/labour will be in good hands, but normal ones are generally left to housemen and midwives (and students) which usually isn't a problem smile.gif

And price would be cheaper compared to other private hospitals.

My own sister had terrible experience with HUKM, it was really nightmare and nobody would believe with the what she had experienced there. At first we thought HUKM is a half government/half private hospital and the price is 'quite' reasonable and near to her house, so decided to go to this hospital instead of other private hospital.

During the few hours of her contraction, the doctor brought few students into the room and let them monitor when the doctor is examine my sister, which made my sister feel very embarrassed showing her private part to strangers(not doctor/nurse). During her delivery complications occurs which doctor decided to use forceps, i'm not sure whether it's the doctor who is not experience enough or what, eventually there are some tears inside the vaginal caused by the forceps, so stitching had to be done inside the vaginal, and guess what, stitching was done pretty bad that cause heavy bleeding after my sister was sent back to room to rest.

We were quite shocked to see the heavy bleeding after the surgery and called the nurse to check on my sister few time during mid night, the nurse didn't say/do much but just to change the pad for my sister. Until my sister almost fainted then only the nurse call the doctor to come to hospital. So second stitching was done again.

My sister rested in hospital for 1 day before she went back home. She kept on complaining that her vaginal was very painful so we thought it's the stitching that cause the pain and she did take pain killer. Until 2-3 days later when we saw blood clogs coming out from the vaginal (big blood clog) and she fainted eventually, we sent her to another private hospital to consult another doctor, then only we found out my sister was not prescribed with anti-biotics in HUKM!! which caused the wound to infect and swollen and bleed. Again, my sister had to go through another surgery to stitch the tears inside the vagina by the private hospital doctor. We didn't have the time to go back to HUKM to investigate whether the doctor didn't prescribe the anti-biotic OR the pharmacist missed out on the anti-biotics that prescribed by the doctor, but we are really really disappointed with what happened in HUKM which i think it's very unacceptable!

Wow, I hope she's okay? It must be quite an ordeal for her. I don't think this will ever happen at a private hospital.

in your case, i think you better check with HUKM or sue them for their action. U'll get the compensation and the hospital will get their lesson... and hopefully, no else will be the victim. just my concern, that's all.

Omg!!!
i am sorry to hear about your sister situation.. i deliver my 2nd baby at hospital serdang although in the labour room have quite a lot of student but the doctor or senior midwife won't give the student to do deliver part and also stitching too. the student is just stand beside and help only while seeing their Senior doing the job.
and i was proud that their job are super detail and everything done perfectly.

If you can afford it, you can try Dr. Guna in Damansara Specialist Hospital in Taman Tun. Not that far away and he is a great doc.
