Not tiring la. This one you pump fast around 6 times and hold it down - the milk will flow by itself. Just keep repeating till you get 3oz. Takes about 10-15 minutes or so.

if possible, do get battery operated ones. It's much better than manual pumping.

Also, those cheap ones are really not good. Get a proper brand.

If not mistaken, you can rent those good quality pump from companies who specialize in providing confinement service.

I dont know where to get a cheap one because this kind of pharmacy things usually comes with standard price ..wont be anyway cheaper unless u have contact inside the factory or sale related for the particular product.

I got some idea, u mod the house hold suction hand pump ..
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

it is same concept but bigger suction and capacity ..

the only thing should be careful is the 3 ways valves, make sure no contamination ...no lubrication fluid/dirts from the hand pump ...can put a filter to be safe.

OR

buy a 2nd hand one, because usually the baby is big enough we feed commercial milk already, so get from those ex-breastfed mom. biggrin.gif

Hi,

Since i come across this thread and would like to share my experiences as well.
My wife after give birth and she was having her confinement at my mother-in-law's place.
At first we didn't plan to buy the electric breast pump as my wife's friend said will lend the manual pump to her.
We think that since we are not going to breast feed for long period, probably 2 months after her maternity leave will change to milk powder.

At 1st week, what i see is, she is very tired because need to wake up every 1 and the half hour to 2 hours to feed our baby.
Which made her very tired furthermore still need to pump the milk manually and store in container, put it into the fridge.
Finally i think i do not want to see my wife suffering by pumping the breast milk manually, i decided to buy her a electronic pump instead.

I also felt headache which brand to go, surveyed on Avent eletric pump, if not wrong i think it cost around RM400-500
and i think that it's not worth because of the above reason i mentioned.
so i went to a shop named BabyLand, the shop owner introduced me the Sunny Lion, which only cost around RM90-100, kind of forgotten the price but i'm sure its below RM100, i brought home and let my wife test, she is satisfied with that, maybe she doesn't wants to hurt me by telling the true, but if you ask for my opinion on this product, it produced some noise like "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" rclxub.gif when it turned on.
anyway you can always survey first before you buy it.

I bought mine in one of the local baby shop. It is an electrical operated breastpump with one outlet. It only cost me RM 60+ and it works perfectly well. Having breastfed my 3 babies, experience told me that don't buy too pricy pump for often you will only use for the first few months.

It depend on how long your wife would commit to breastfeed the baby and how many babies you want in your life...

i can only recommend for the long term investment, since my wife want to breast feed the baby for the whole 2 years.

manual pump:

1. Avent

2. Medela

Electric/Battery operated pump :

1. Medela

2. Spectra

3. Ameda

Although the price is premium, it's worth the price for long term investment...and there's a lot of local online shop such as momslittleones, lilkaistore, sarakids etc..sometimes they always have sales/bargains for the breastpump..so watch out..

if you still want more discount, go for ebay shopping..bought medela freestyle pump for half the price they sold here..but kena tax 15%..still cheaper than here..

Anyway, happy hunting smile.gif

Cheers

I have two; Spectra 3 and Medela Freestyle. And I must say Medela is the best. I'm still breastfeeding my 7 month old baby. Although it's expensive, some of the seller on the Internet have instalment plan for buyers.

@Syd G,
Medela huh?! That's what I'll recommend too. Anyhow for those looking to purchase cheaper breast pumps, if u've a friend coming back from the USA, get it from there; it's way cheaper.

I got the Medela one for a friend (it's retailing about RM1.8k here I think) but I paid less than RM1k for it. The only thing is finding someone to carry it back from the USA.

my wife bought manual pump instead... Pureen RM43 from The Store having 20% off...

as commented by my mother-in-law, battery operated by harm the internal organ as we can't 100% control the pump frequency and suction power... used manual pump can control exactly what we required and lesser harm to breast...

Good electric pump can control suction power la wink.gif This is why it's important to get a good one smile.gif

Btw your mother-in-law obviously had never used an electric breastpump before. It's easy to be ignorant, so equip yourself with knowledge smile.gif

I'm really enjoying the baby after tearing my hair out for a month tongue.gif Now already thinking of another one hihihihihi biggrin.gif

For manual pump, I've heard a lot of feedbacks that favour Avent Isis over Medela Harmony. But I'm quite biased towards Medela due to its awesome Freestyle pump biggrin.gif

madela freestyle is the best.. my wife using it and she feels very comfortable.. carrying it to work also very easy... it even has the control to simulate the baby suck hence it feels natural... even the price is super expensive, yet, how much do you spend on your phone, gadget and smoke? huh..... cant you 'invest' good thing to your son? ie: your blackberry of iphone may cost up to Rm1.5k, your laptop and other gadget may cost additional at least RM1k, and for those who smoke, additional of RM300 for a month, rite? and to spend to your own bloodline pon bekire ker? huhuh.. just my cent la...

breast pump is very personal and one may work for someone but not the other, be it cheap stuff of branded. if you buy a cheap one and you don't like it, tak sakit sangat but if a husband spent few hundred bucks for the wife at the end the wifey tak ngam pakai..... sakit

it is good if you can test the pump from friends, etc. fabulous mom actually has various brand and pump to let you try. so i strongly suggest take your wife to test at the store.

they are now having clearance sales and perhaps it's not the best time to try due to the crowd. however, you need to buy testing kits for hygiene purpose if i'm not mistaken.

www.fabulousmom.com

they have almost everything for breastfeeding. they are at Puchong Jaya next to IOI mall, TTDI next to CIMB and JB skudai, around sutera mall.

Well said. I'm using Medela Freestyle too. It's very important to invest in good pump if plan to breastfeed for long period. It's pricey but if calculate the amount of $$ saved from buying formula milk for 2-3 kids, the expensive price tag of the pump becomes quite ok ady. And it's cheaper than Avent double pump.

Previously was using Avent single electronic pump until it fails me 2 times (yes, I bought 2 2nd hand Avent pumps mad.gif ). Even the baby monitor from Avent (gift from future sis in law) also failed me. Luckily this is still under warranty, but hv to take back to S'pore cos bought from S'pore.

Hi peepz,

Read in some article not too long ago that we shdnt use cheaper pumps as it will destroy your breast tissues or something like that. Opt for brands like medela and spektra.....just to share smile.gif

my friend recommend pureen - battery operating.
price around rm160.

any comment ?
I thinking to buy spectra3, but my wife said it's expensive, pureen battery enough..

another thing, how about if I buy secondhand ?
because i think, this thing is already place to someone breast, and after that want to put at my wife breast..
afraid if there is infection or others..
any comment?

algu,
I've used Pureen breastpump before & sad to say, it doesn't help much. That said, I have a friend who managed to BF for 1.5 years with just the Pureen pump (she mixed feed with formula).

You must 1st ask your wife, how long she plan to BF? If her goal is to BF long term, it's best to invest in a good double pump cos it really makes a lot of difference in the long run. I've used a few single pumps (Pureen -> Pigeon -> Medela) before buying a Medela Pump In Style Advanced. 3 years down the road, I am still breastfeeding my daughter smile.gif.

As for buying 2nd hand, anything that touches milk should be replaced (especially if you're buying from a stranger whose health background is unknown).

Good luck!

@algu,
some women may not want to breastfeed for whatever reasons. at least have the courtesy to ask her first before you buy something that she may not use.

this is because all surrounding friend n family is fully depends on formula.

start rant

Arguing with friends and sadly, family about breastfeeding is so tiring, I had to continuously remind myself to just nod and smile.

It usually goes like this -

Them : So your baby is breastfeeding?
Me : Yes
Them : Fully or mixed with formula?
Me : Fully.
Them : Oh you're very lucky got milk | Your baby is a girl so she doesnt drink so much - if boy then have to campur cause they drink lots | or something insulting like that
Me : *Smiles and nods*

In my heart I was in rage because I worked too damn hard to make sure that I get to exclusively provide my child with breastmilk till she's 6 months old - I watched videos/read books how to produce lots of milk, what to eat/drink, which pump to buy, how to pump, when to pump, when to feed, how often to feed, how long to feed, what to do after feeding, how to store, how to reheat and a lot of other things.

And my baby is 6kg at 2 months old - she drinks lots since birth (back then every one and a half hour for half an hour - I burnt so much calories, I went back to my pre-pregnancy weight in 2 weeks) so the volume argument is moot.

I found out that the comments they made were from their shame/guilt of their own inability to do the same. None of them actually asked me how I manage to do it, as I'd be more than happy to share the knowledge. I'll never condemn a mother's choice to formula-feed their kids within the first few months because they have their own reasons; just dont insult me for doing it differently. Urgh.

end rant

Oh well.

HonMun,
I've pumped for almost 3 years & erm, they're not sagging XD

algu,
Knowledge is power. There are a lot of resources to read from online smile.gif. Sites such was www.kellymom.com & www.llli.org provides great information.

BF is not easy, it takes a lot of hard work & determination to succeed smile.gif.

Syd,
Haih, those are very common. People usually will terbeliak when I tell them I am BFing exclusively (no FM too, just like you) cos I am very thin XD (used to weigh 41kg when my baby was younger), hahaha.

nicKit,
For your next pregnancy, start "brainwashing" you hubby once pregnancy is confirmed. Hubby is our best supporter when the "world" is against you!

We have a electric Medela breast pump to use at home but need one for the office as the office does not have mother's room, only the ladies toilet without any electrical power. Additionally, dont want to use electric pump as it is noisy and the whole block would know we are pumping breast milk.

What is the manual / battery operated breast pump that is quiet and recommended?

do your office has prayer room? you can use the female prayer room to pump like my wife...

as for the battery operated pump, u can try madela free style, with built in rechargeable battery and the sound is less than a phone vibration.

I also like Avent brand but dont know how the manual / battery operated breast pump works.
I will be embarrassed if it is loud. I doubt there is any shopping mall where they can actually let us try this, yes? Try as in just turn it on for sound-test.

Prayer room to do breast pump? Ok, even if I'm not prohibited, I think some Muslim may not like the idea? Not sure because my office block share with other offices about 7 - 8 other companies in the same block. That is troublesome.

Medela Free Style, ok I will survey it in the baby shops nearby.

just want to share, today.. while my wife was pumping, she heard that the other pump (which dont know the brand) was so loud... luckly her's was silent... hmm.. u r of course not prohibited to enter the muslim prayer room, it just that, u need to know how to act inside so that others will not mad at u la... u could ask ur muslim friend to help with that... or u could enter during non-prime time, that way, it will less people and more privacy...

last time, i went to the shop near the pasar borong selangor (can't remember the shop's name), they did have samples pump to test the sound or if you want to at least have a feel in your hand... but not to test the pump on your breast la... huhuh..

I am dad to be, and I do find that this year end there are plenty of offer and sale for breast pump, I got 50% off for Tommee Tippee electric breast pump with power adapter and battery option, the entire set cost me only RM300.
There are feel online store providing the same price, or you can check out littlewhiz.com, I believe is a good bargain.

guys it just so happened that i saw this part of lowyat. but we have this philips avent isis single pump (battery or electric powered) which was, used only twice (i know cos i assemble and setup it) and has been sitting idle ever since. we bought it for RM695 in jusco when my wife still pregnant, intending to use it of course. but then we came to realize a sad fact, that not all women have that much milk (we tried all reasonable means). since the baby demands lots, we eventually shifted to formula. i say this in whole honesty that we thought of reselling it, but i do not know where. so now i found this thread, at least there may be interested people to buy it.

mint condition everything including box, all sterilized. if any interested people kindly PM me. better it has use for people who will really benefit from it. my son is turning 14 months in a few days... we got no benefit from the purchase of that sad.gif

Well, just to share, i've been a dad for 3 months. u just can't predict how ur baby will turn up. Mine was a boy. Born in PCMC, a bf friendly hospital. They encourage the mums to bf their baby. Also it helps the baby recover from jaundice quicker.

Back to the topic, my wife use Avent manual breast pump. She's happy with it. It's non-tiring, uses less energy from you and comforting withe massaging function. Only thing is, my son prefer direct from source milk rather than feed him with bottle. He's quite picky, rejects all formula milk, tried all, with either resulted in "berak cair" or not passing at all. Sorry for the words used. So my wife had to deal with him always. But still. Avent manual pump is good. And my son will take the pumped milk if he doesn't see my wife.

Juanny, thanks for the suggestions on cheap breastpumps!

Was blogwalking, saw this one blog, quite cheap as well: mykedaibaby.blogspot.com

Same, can pay instalment as well.

But I think breastpumps, esp electric ones - are too bulky!! sad.gif

hi, yea..those double electric one looks bulky but the medela freestyle is not! and if you are full time working mummy, really suggest you go for double electric pump as it is really saves your time. imagine, you want to pump at work. each breast takes you at least 10-15 mins. if you use double u can finish pumping by 15 mins, then u have to wash your pump and dis-assembly your pump, so total about half hour compared to if single electric which takes you 15 mins EACH breast..pumping time alone already taking you 30mins not including washing your breastpump parts.. sweat.gif

yea..most of the blog selling cheap and good breastpump at affordable price including me! rclxm9.gif choose wisely ya!

I will be having my first child in March. But I am still looking and confused to buy a milk pump. This is because some of my friends suggested to buy a cheap brand first. Because they said I need to wait and c my milk production.
Actually i was interested on Medela free-style, but it is quite expensive and I worry i wont able to use it effectively.
Please give me some opinions..

There's a breastfeeding thread here. Go check the thread out to read about our experiences - high's and low's.

if you want to go for BF class, i'll suggest going for Gina Yong's class. Lots of mommas benefited from her class.

All mommies can produce milk..it all depends if you are determined to do it.

Please dont listen to your friends to "wait and see". Cheap pumps will not extract milk much, thus leading you to think that you dont have enough milk. If you're really interested in buying a good pump, get a Avent manual pump or Medela Harmony.

There's a BF class by Ms Gina Yong. I think other forummers are more familiar with her. You can check out our breastfeeding support thread instead.

dont trust cheap brand. cheap brand does not able to help you to stimulate the milk flow and unable to help u to extract the milk in a comfortably way and end up you will give up.
and all mums are capable to breastfeed and it is just a matter you WANT or DONT WANT. it is all about your determination and how far you willing to sacrifice your "valuable" time for the sake of your little one. rolleyes.gif

as for breastpump, no doubt medela freestyle is the best but there are few people selling online at cheaper price including me. if you interested, pm me and i am willing to share more with you. smile.gif
as i am selling breastpump and now i am telling you from my experience, lots of chinese mummy are not willing to buy breastpump. but malay WILL. chinese mummy i encounter will always give lots of excuses such as, work commitment (hey, i encountered a mummy who her work requires her to travel, she too bring her freestyle wherever she goes!!), worry no milk (not relevant to me.. sweat.gif ), worry unable to breastfeed long (really depends on your determination and if you are willing to), etc, etc...

and first time mummy...relax is the key. dont give urself too much pressure on breastfeeding. once give birth, ask the nurse to teach you how to nurse your newborn. and dont give up. smile.gif

Not to be racist but most Malay Muslim moms will try to breastfeed their kids because our prophet had 2 milk mommies because his mother didnt have enough milk. It just shows the importance of human milk, having a milk mom, eventhough there were abundance of goat milk around.

When I was studying, I carried my FS and cooler bag everyday and pumped in the surau in between classes. Now they have a proper lactation room and proper fridge and proper chair for me to sit biggrin.gif

lol...yea..
family support is important too. last time my aunt told me to stop breastfeeding after 2 months as im going to work then. I said, the problem now lies with me and im choose to breastfeed and myself not complaining, why you?? mad.gif
second...my MIL who will be taking care my little one after i go back to work after confinement (taking care daytime) also suggested me to mix with formula milk. i just put deaf ear loh (cant hentam balik mah... sweat.gif ). in order to avoid my MIL to feed my little one with formula, i returned all 4 tins of formula milk (which i bought for standby) back to the store. sweat.gif but soon, my MIL also get use to it la. thumbup.gif

I intend to sell my spectra 7 if interested pls pm. I started with Avent manual but decided to invest in an electric seeing that i bf my first for close to a year. Comes with all accessories for double pumping as well as 6 storage bottles. Bf for 9 months already n agree with some of posters above..invest in a reasonably good pump if you're serious about breastfeeding. It's a matter of if you WANT to not if you can or not icon_rolleyes.gif

Yes it is definetly important to buy a good pump (Specially Electric) cos I have 1 or 2 friends who gave up on pumping and BF due to using a manual pump. Manual not good enuf for hardcore pumping mommies!

Rather decent for the price and the cup is a silicone like material, hence apparently my wife says its way more comfortable than most other models out there

oh, and i think i save a lot. for example my 1st child drink Nestle-Nan cost around RM40 x 4 box per month= RM160. for a year RM160x 12 months=RM1920. takkan lah your child drink milk just one year, for sure 2 or 3 years. and how about if u use more expensive milk? btw, breastfed babies are more healthier.

for my 1st child, i spend about RM600-milk, diapers and nursery. the 2nd one not much, around RM300, because i breastfed and cloth diapering, the rest of his peruntukan i put in his Tabung Haji account. biggrin.gif . now he have almost as much as mine rclxms.gif

I just bought a Tommee Tippee electric breat pump. Try to google it, you will know more info about TT breast pump & bottle.

Hi All,

Any experienced moms or dads out there to share if I would need a transformer/ adapter if i buy my Medela in US and use it in Malaysia?

I thought that the voltage in US & Malaysia is different but some friends said that they have no problem with their Avent pump. How about Medela?

I bought my Medela in US too (so much cheaper than here). I am using 9 volt adaptor and there hasn't been any problem so far.

Hi Victoria,

The adapter which you were using originally comes with the package?

No, I bought the adaptor here in Malaysia. It is a common 9 volts adaptor and you can just plug it to the power socket of the breast pump. You can get the adaptor in any electronic shop. It costs around RM 30 by memory.

I bought mine in US (Not thru Ebay). I am not sure about Ebay and Amazon. I think they should be cheaper too, but you have to check postage cost etc.

If you are a working mum, I would recommend using "Medela Freestyle" or "Medela Pump In Style Advanced". They are double electric pumps with dual phase expression. It normally takes me about 10 - 20 minutes to express milk per session.

If you are a stay at home mum, I would assume Medela Swing should be sufficient because baby would direct latch most of the time.

I've never used Medela Swing, so it is really not in my place to comment. But from what I heard from my friend and cousin (both are stay at home mums), it takes 30 - 40 minutes for them to express milk per pumping session using Medela Swing.

I agree with victoria_lucas....which is why we're selling off our Medela Swing biggrin.gif We bought a double pump since my wife is a working mum and it saves 50% of the total expressing time....If you're a full time housewife then a single electric breast pump would be sufficient..

Hi Victoria,

Thanks for the input.

Well I would have to agree with both you & Justin as well that a double pump would definitely shorten pumping time especially if you are a working mom with limited time in the office to express.

Anyone bought this Pigeon Silent Electric Breast Pump before?? Not sure it is really that silent or not..

Price about the same.
One light. the other one bulky.
One not powerful enough. The other one enough power.
One claim to be freestyle. The other one not freestyle but you can make it freestyle if you know how. smile.gif

erm. i would say depends on your requirement. if you are plan to breasfeeding while working, meaning working mummy, then suggest to get freestyle. as it is lighter, portable and small, and stylish. rolleyes.gif

remember, backpack requires total of 8 or 10 (cant remember) AA baterries in order to operate if you do not have the power supply, while freestyle comes with rechargeable battery. hope this helps. smile.gif

I am using medela freestyle. For me, the power is enough. I only use level 3 and 4. Maximum is lvl 9. I am very happy with it so far. Small and mobile.

I have pumped using medela symphony which is the big one, in the hospital and I don't find much difference in the suction.

This is only my observation. smile.gif

I am using the jingle jungle storage bottles. Connect straight to the pump. Even the caps I mix around. Fits well and economical.

If you can buy from places like amazon, US, sometimes can get free gifts as well, like big milk bottles, breast pads, the cream for nipple, etc...cheaper too.

Hi intanardy,

Just a suggestion, you can also store your bm in storage bags which are cheaper than bottles but can only use once. So far, I have not have to use frozen bm. Also, the bottles take up more space.

Oh, I actually bought medela fs from babies f us, US. I only paid like rm900 plus cause it was on sale at that time plus free gifts. I got my sister to send it over though. I figure I'll risk the warranty since the difference is a lot. Medela cannot be popular if it breaks down so fast....

I have been using it 3 to 5 times daily when baby was born but now, only 2 to 3 times since I dl. The only fault I find with fs is that the silicone valve thingy spoils fast if sterilised frequently.

Congrats, by the way smile.gif

I am confusing in getting avent or medela electric pump after reading the posts here.
Previously I was using spectra3 and now switch to avent manual pump. It was pain when using Spectra3, now feel comfortable with the avent manual pump but tiring since it is manually.
Seek for advice here whether to get avent or medela brest pump..
By the way, have anyone realised that the pump "neck" is shorter in spectra3 and longer in avent manual pump? The shorter "neck" makes my nipple pain a lot.. So now am looking for the same length "neck" as avent manual breastpump but in electric form.

Hi. I think I saw it once at one of the baby stores in 1utama but that was early last year. Not sure if they still have it. Sorry I can't remember the name of the store. Was just in town for a one day shopping trip. Baby shops in Singapore will definitely have as well as eBay, though you did specify Malaysia, hehe....

Why do you want a Doppler anyway? I read that they are not as clear as the ones in the clinics and sometimes, can't pick up the baby's heartbeat cause of the baby's position. Don't wanna pry but don't scare yourself if cannot find heartbeat. Heard it happened to some mothers.

Congrats and good luck. smile.gif

Dear Catherine, my advice is never get a manual pump. It's so tiring even the good one. Any electric pump is fine, depending on your budget. If you want Sth fast, maybe double pump. smile.gif

If you're a working mom, get a double electric pump.

If you're thinking of buying manual pump, dont buy Pureen pump. Waste of energy on earth.

I've been using Pigeon Silent Electrical Breastpump sfter i'm back at work~ No one's knows while I was pumping publicly as it has a silent motor. Satisfied ^^

Hi Mummies, has anyone using Spectra 3 now? Can you please share your experience here? I'm currently looking for one breast pump which is affordable for me (Less than RM500). If I opt for electric breast pump which brand is good?
Thanks in advanced for sharing =)

Medela mini is for those light user. If you planned to fully breast milk, this unit I afraid cannot support long as it is not heavy duty type.
Harmony is better than mini, if come to more frequent usage.
