- ls-lR.gz
- pool
- project

I'm currently debmirror the repo, and I'd love to know the difference between dists and pool. Is pool the software collection (like the actual library), and dists is a pointer (like a kinonavi at Kinokuniya) to specific software for specific releases (intrepid, jaunty, karmic and such)?

We have MediBuntu, Google and Canonical being third party sauces. What's the name of the official repo? Official?

QUOTE
With automatic repositories, distributing the packages in the different directories will quickly lead to an unmanageable beast. It is also a waste of space and bandwidth, as there are many packages (for example documentation packages) which are the same for all architectures.

In these cases, a possible solution is a pool. A pool is an additional directory under the repository root containing all packages (the binaries for all architectures, distributions, and components, and all the sources). Through a smart combination of override files (which are not covered in this document) and of scripts many problems can be avoided. A nice example of a pooled repository is the Debian repository itself.

you're using standard or envy drivers?

What card are you using?
If you're using a G92 or later card, you could get motion compensation to work via VDPAU. Of course, you would also need the latest driver and a patched mplayer.

either "ifconfig -a", which will give you info abt all your network interfaces, or "ifconfig <device name>" e.g. "ifconfig eth0"

anyone using a Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi XtremeGamer sound card (successfully) on Ubuntu 8.10?

i've installed the driver & i did get sound working after that using the OLSA option, but the subsequent day(s) when i booted up to Ubuntu, i didn't get any sound at all on the OLSA option (in fact, got an error msg instead when i tried to test it). when i swopped to the OSS option, there's sound, but it sounds absolutely horrible with a lot of static & distortion.

oyah...fyi, this is my 1st time trying out a Linux OS blush.gif

I too have a problem with audio in Ubuntu. My problem is solved by updating & configuring ALSA driver. I don't know if it is applicable to you.

You'll have to compile it manually.

CODE

wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.19.tar.bz2
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
tar alsa-driver-1.0.19.tar.bz2
cd alsa-driver-1.0.19
./configure --with-cards=all
make
sudo make install

You probably need to append the specific sound card model in the alsa-base file. I don't have a creative card so I don't know the specifics.

Creative is a little tricky as they don't any Linux support aside from poorly written and outdated drivers. They've recently open sourced their Linux drivers so these will eventually get better but in the meantime, it's a crapshoot.

Go over to ubuntuforums.org, there're many threads on how to troubleshoot Creative soundcards. Some work, some don't.

It seems that my display using Ubuntu 8.10 on my Dell XPS M1330 doesn't turn off even if I have set it to go off after idling for 12 minutes. hmm.gif

I find GNOME-power-manager to be very unreliable on my computers as fas as sending displays to sleep is concerned. It will work for a few times before completely stopping to work again for the rest of the session.

Yes, this is what I've been facing after deciding to give Ubuntu another try. For my laptop that is usually switched on 24 hours, it doesn't seem practical at all that the monitor is switched on all the time. hmm.gif

If you face this issue, you will face it no matter which distribution you use. The GPM is the same as long as you use GNOME. Why don't you give KDE a try, I think you should be able to get 4.2 in Ubuntu backports. I run KDE 4.2 in Fedora and as far as power management is concerned, it's very reliable.
