http://www.dpreview.com/news/1010/10101405...reavailable.asp
A new firmware upgrade adds further operating refinements to the NEX-5/NEX-3 compact system cameras from Sony.

Available now for download*1 with versions available for Windows and Mac OS*2, the free upgrade adds several performance enhancements. Autofocus is now supported when using the NEX-5/NEX-3 with 14 lenses from the full range of A-mount optics by Sony and Carl Zeiss that includes telephotos, primes and zooms. Aperture settings can be maintained during HD movie recording, and system menu operation has been streamlined alongside other usability improvements. Registered NEX-5/NEX-3 owners will be advised of the free update via email.

Autofocus with A-mount lenses
Single-shot autofocus is supported with 14 optional A-mount SAM and SSM lens models*3 when used with the optional LA-EA1 Mount Adaptor. Single-shot AF is also possible while in movie recording mode by pressing the shutter button halfway down. Support for AF operation with A-mount lenses also requires a separate firmware upgrade for the LA-EA1.

Aperture priority with video recording
HD video can be shot while maintaining constant aperture, either in A (aperture priority) mode or in iAuto mode with background defocus activated. This aids the simple creation of beautiful background defocus effects during movie recording.

Soft key settings
It’s possible to customise functions of two of the three soft keys on the camera’s rear panel. Functions that can be assigned include Shooting Mode, Shooting Tips, Precision Digital Zoom, ISO, White Balance, Metering Mode, Flash Compensation, DRO, Auto HDR, Creative Style, MF Assist and AF Area.

Menu start
When ‘Menu’ is selected, there’s now the option to display either the main menu screen or the last parameter set. This simplifies quick readjustment of recently-selected functions and settings.

MF Assist
An enlarged image portion can be displayed on screen with user-selectable duration while in MF (Manual Focus) Assist mode. MF Assist operation has also been improved.  The previously-chosen magnified image portion can now be maintained when MF Assist is re-selected, making repeated checks of fine focus quicker and more convenient.

*1 NEX-5/NEX-3 customers can download the firmware upgrade from http://support.sony-europe.com/hub/hub.html
*2 System requirements [PC]: Windows XP SP3 (64-bit and Starter editions not supported); Windows Vista SP2 (Starter edition not supported); Windows 7
System requirements [Macintosh]: OS X (Ver.10.5 and Ver.10.6).
[PC/Mac] Hard disk space: min. 200MB / RAM: min. 512MB.
Upgrade requires USB cable connection between computer and NEX-5/NEX-3.
*3Autofocus function is supported with these A-mount lenses:

SAM lenses

•DT 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 SAM [SAL1855]
•28-75mm F2.8 SAM [SAL2875],

This is a good list:
http://www.sonyinsider.com/2010/05/21/the-...f-the-sony-nex/

Seems to be a typo where the LCS-EML2A is meant for the NEX + 18-55mm and the LCS-EML1A is meant for the NEX + 16mm.

This is one of the best Sony Alpha-related sites - I prefer to check info from this site than Sony's own sites, which sometimes mix things up:

Not a particularly proud nex 5 owner but a Nex owner none the less. I got it as a stop gap solution till Sony launch the NEX VG10. I heard almost everything is identical except for no raw mode and unlimited recoding time for the vg10. Plus I'll get an extra lens when I buy the vg10 smile.gif I dont really favour shooting stills.

Overall I like it, but overheat too easily (even worse than my old jvc HD7) and talk about chomping on batteries. It's like putting candies at a 7 year olds party, gone in 60 seconds! I have to carry at least 4 batteries if I'm shooting outdoors.

I don think the seller is bad. Because he open on the spot and let me check. And I confirmed it is sealed. opened 2 boxes and without lens cap. He was curious too. Waiting for him to get the cap from supplier now. The seller say Will find a 3rd party cap for me temporarily.

@shinchan^^: Ya i knew cjlai is doing a bulk for rear cap. But now I need it urgently. Because I have a SLR magic lens from him too. And now both my e-mount lens are exposed because no cap.

*
battery is really a big issue for nex nod.gif

but i nvr record a video with my nex tongue.gif

*
It's a Zeiss UV filter that u can buy from Sony Style for rm160. The hood comes with the kitlens. I'm sure they have the back lens cap too.

How I wish the NEX can just use AA batts. I'm very sure my Sanyo Eneloops will be so much better plus we can just pop into any 7-11 for new batts. Dont understand all these proprietary batts nowadays. Last time good semi pro compacts all use normal AA.

guys, i'm thinking to get LX5, but suddenly found this thread and tbh, which one is better, in terms of image quality only.. LX5 or NEX3 (as price is not differs much)?

i see the image quality of NEX is kinda good, but not sure if the stock lens 16mm is capable to produce good and sharp images.. as i dont plan to spend extra money for lenses / accessories, for now. biggrin.gif

irenic> i think most of the people here will say NEX. Cause the sensor size different. Noise control also superb. But the downside if take only 16mm means you cant zoom. If take 18-55mm it will be quite bulky compared to LX5.

if u like to take pic at night/dark place, nex is a better choice.

but if u really mind compactness, lx5.

nex with 16mm is still compact, but, if only u can tolerate u CANT zoom...

nex with 1855 is not compact, but sexy wub.gif

I am really interested in NEX 5 as it fits all my criteria but I'm still a bit sceptical.

I'm worried about its life expectancy with the infamous so-called "Sony Timer" (wikipedia) in which Sony's product will eventually die after its warranty.

I used to have a Sony HIFI and it died after 2 years and now my PS2 also gave up on me in 2 years time too. IS this real?

People always throw these kind of things around... but in truth.. it all boils down to 2 thing:

1) How u take care of your gears/stuff.
2) If you're lucky or not. Yes, Luck plays a role in this.

people say the same thing about Acer products and they last quite long.
people say proton cars are bad, but i still see some 20 year old saga on the highway.

if ur not convinced enough, older models like the sony a100 was first launched in 2006 and some people still use it.

and after 2 years, ur bound to upgrade. rclxms.gif

NEX 5 has a better grip and build quality.

depends on whether how much you use video, and full HD in particular
apart from that, go test out both models
see which grip you like best, cos it is really a case of personal preference

I just tried out the Sony NEX 5... Completely fell head over heels for it! Its so small.. Yet so sturdy! thumbup.gif for Sony for this little wonder....

Now my question, is this camera recommended for beginners like me? I only use PnS all me life and would like to try on a DSLR. I dun really care about the size (I think...), but i would like to plunge deeper into the world of photography... Simply wanna take better pictures as a hobby and during low light situation...

Please help a serious newbie out... Thanks~!

NEX is always recommended, why not you go try sony's other types of DSLR to compare which one you like. Since size is not the problem, imho go for dslr.

Thanks for the quick reply.. I will certainly be trying out as much dslr as I could before pulling the trigger...

Does the lack of an optical view finder a downside to a camera? In other words, does an optical view finder help when taking a picture?

micdy> try out the dsly you would know better. for me i think setting the focus point in viewfinder easier than non-view finder in NEX. Besides that many setting like ISO, Shutter speed and Aperture have dedicated button or dial. not like nex.

I tried the NEX 5 just now, kinda wish that it has a dedicated button like the ones in my compact camera for ISO, Timer, and others for easy access... But yeah, generally still leaning towards DSLR.

But then again, the small and compact body of the NEX 5 is really the biggest selling point for me thus far... Imagine going to fine dinning restaurant, me in my suit and a big bag full of DSLR gadgets... Kinda looks weird... Or going out for a formal dinner and bringing a DSLR to take a good pictures which is kinda ridiculours.. (Me thinks..) XD

timer is accesible from the drive mode button, in fact there is an option for you to select the timer from 1 to 10 seconds
as for the rest, firmware v3 should fix most of it

LX5 doesn't have interchangeable lens.

D3100 and NEX5 basically both on the same par at performances, but NEX5 is much more smaller because it doesn't have a viewfinder built in. NEX5 has a built in 3D panorama features too, which i use a lot myself tongue.gif

The only trade-off for NEX5 now is the adapters for DSLR lens to mount on NEX5 available in the market currently, doesn't support auto focus. So if you plan to use DSLR lens on NEX5 with an adapter, you need to manual focus.

Otherwise, if you just stick to the 3 original Sony E-mount lenses available for NEX5, it's a good buy biggrin.gif

NEX5 you wont regret de lah. Just use it as a compact, it will serve you more than enough. If you can only afford 1 lens, of course go for 18-55 as it is more convenient and useful than 16mm, but if possible, take both lens together because the 16mm alone also worth a lot if you take a lot close up photos. The 16m and the f/2.8 make quite a lot differences.

I don't have but wanted a NEX for the APS-C sensor, tilty screen and the small size.

I haven't got the NEX yet because there isn't a f1.4 20-30mm range normal prime for it that AF's

I have to get something like the NEX eventually because of increasing big-camera-phobia among the public.

I won't get a PEN cos AF is slowish and the LCD is rubbish.

I won't get a LUMIX GF1 because it's high ISO is crap.

I won't get the other LUMIX Micro Four Thirds because of the small'ish sensor, 2x crop and cos they look like bonzai DSLR.

I won't get a G11/12 because of the tiny sensor ( already have a S90 anyways)

True.. that's why haven't bought yet. If they come out with a fast normal prime that is sharp and even if its still thicker than the current pancake then can di.

I get a NEX-5 because.....

1. It is Small... it is the same size as a compact cammie (well slightly bigger)
2. It has a tile LCD and the pixel is AWESOME who needs viewfinder whith this screen...
3. it take Full HD recording 1080i (6ofps) and 1080p (30fps) with full auto focus!!!
4. with adapter (sony) it can take all the sony lens with auto focus (Firmware V3)
5. with other adapters you can fit ALL LENS!!! (that include Voltlander 50mm F1.1) at only RM3K WOW!!!! 50mm F1.1!!!!!
6. it can fit Canon, Nikon, Sony, Voltlander, Leica, Micro 4/3 lens with adapter!!!
7. it is a APS-C Cmos sensor and look at the Noise handling at high ISO!!!
8. It has sweep pano, HDR, 7fps Burst shot with AF
9. The current firmware has limited button assignment but V3 will fix most of it...

I like it!!!!!

Can use any of the Alpha SAM lenses oredi ma. Then u can put the lovely 35mm G lens on it for AF. Anyway, dont be so lazy la, go get a superb Leica M mount lens for the NEX n use MF. It's very easy to MF on the NEX coz the LCD is super sharp n accurate. The IQ of NEX with M mount lens will make ur eyes bleed man.

if u don know how to take good video, give you a 100k video instrument also u cannot produce good video.

vice versus, if you have all the skill in photographing / video-graphing, ur attached video is just piece of cake.

Why would you want a 50mm on an APS-C cam? What u need is a 35mm f1.4 for the NEX. A Leica 35mm f1.4 would be a measly rm15k. 35mm f2 is about rm10k. If u want a 50mm f1 oso can, just rm25-30k. brows.gif

Twin lens confirmed no more production since last month lar.. That's why Sony offer the PWP for 2nd lens.

It was really hard to get twin lens package since last month because all available were remaining stocks and they all sell it for higher prices...

Twin lens confirmed no more production since last month lar.. That's why Sony offer the PWP for 2nd lens.

It was really hard to get twin lens package since last month because all available were remaining stocks and they all sell it for higher prices...
*
oic... regarding the PWP, issit the camera must purchase from sony centre only entitle to get the 2nd lens with special price? think to get from outside camera shop which is cheaper then still can get 2nd lens with cheaper price or not?

with some practice, it is. You can use the MF Assist function too no worries. Good luck funding neo_lam. rclxms.gif Hopefully by next week, I'll get the LA-EA1 adapter and 55200 SAM. My current kit would be enough for general purposes by then.

actually the color that the lens produce are quite weird...its like something tend to be cold side of neutral...
so i use vivid mode to shoot to bring out the details...still very usable....
and i totally satisfied with manual focus on NEX....so i decided to get one with Leica mount...

nope....its bokeh actually...due to its focal plane is not flat...so it can easily create bokeh....very nice lens to create diorama effect...

i dont think its soft corners... its much too creamy to be soft corners... but neo_lam already explained.

neo_lam: but considering the cheap cheap price of the CCTV lens, its really acceptable... and a leica lens on the nex would be killer. rclxms.gif

That is NOT bokeh la haiyooooooo. The door in the middle is sharp n the wall on the sides is soft. The door n wall is flat n on the same focal plane. How can u get bokeh from the same wall? That is an example of cheap lens with bad IQ, super soft corners.

Luminous Landscapes tested the beta firmware...

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/...re_update.shtml

from his review, AF ranging from 2-4 sec depending on lenses. Better than no AF at all. rclxms.gif Looking forward for the new firmware for custom menu.

That 16mm is a 24mm equivalent on FF. U try a 24mm n 35mm on FF camera(or the crop equivalents for ur 550D) for a week n I guarantee u will fall in love. Only gripe I have is that they should have made it a 16mm f1.8 at least. 16mm f1.4 would have been awesome.

It's way too wide for my purpose and location la. Unless wanna take buildings and mountains only.

Edit: Let me rephrase it... I think its difficult to go on a trip (for example) and only bringing the 16mm.

u cuckoo la. The kinda wide ur talking about for buildings n mountains is 16mm Full Frame which is Ultra Wide oredi. 16mm FF wud be about 11mm on the NEX. 16mm on NEX is nowhere near UWA. 16mm on APS-C is just normal wide angle only.

Ya ya ya... but 24mm equal as a single and only lens solution? Have to stick it to ppl's face for headshots leh.. and not too flattering ones at that.
I got this feeling that Sony chose 16mm to target those Jap and Korean for self portrait/camwhoring PnS style.

we can't get wider on zoom kit lens..
but by using 16mm, the image can be cropped.. unless it's total lousy IQ..

lol... 1855 also can camwhore. sony chose 16mm coz its wide angle but not ultra wide angle.... its great for casual shooting (group shots, scenery, full body portrait etc.)...

Sweep panorama still not wide enough kar? tongue.gif

My meaning is with street shots, its not the appropriate length (imho) since the perspective is totally different then what the eye see.

Ppl using between 35 to 50mm (equal) length for so long di... Panny's pancake also this range... Samsung's pancake also this range... but Sony go and do a camwhore pancake pulak.

If stick it to ppl's face pulak will get the head big body small effect.

got that kind of effect eh for 16mm? anyone has one can comment?

i think 50mm just too tight.. unless really need all half body shot..
otherwise need to go far² away.. tongue.gif

no option must grab the adapter for better A-mount lenses..
atleast can use A-mount.. thumbup.gif

for me 16mm would be perfect for beginners upgrading from traditional PnS. Its a very versatile lens.

lwk523, for budget to get only 1 lens, i'd recommend to get the 18-55. its more versatile than the pancake, but you'll lose the compactness

For clarity ...I mean 35-50mm in 35mm equivalent.... which means 24mm to 35mm range.

You can try mar... use your 18-55 kit... take a headshot of a friend using 18mm and then take some steps backward and take another shot of the same composition using other range.

Aiyar brudder... I don't mean so exaggerated lar.

Couldn't find anyone to model for me in the office... and no access to the 16mm pancake so the kitzoom and my ice coffee will have to do...

Besides... 16mm take pic of gf nevermind lar (though there's the risk of her complaining how come she look fat or whatever)... but for baby, kids or strangers.... have to get real close into their comfort zone. Could be intrusive.

Sony really sucks when it comes to the NEX warranty. Some ppl got 1 year, some got 15 months, some got 2 years n some even got 3 years warranty. Blardy hell, ppl buy the same thing but getting different benefits. Some1 shud go complain to consumer tribunal about this.

Hmm... Maybe it differs for different lens package?

It's confusing lol... As much as my saleman conned me into getting the heavily priced accesories, he actually told me about the 1+1 warranty LOL

its promotion is time to time, thats y someone get 15 months, some get 18 months , some get 24 months and who attend workshop get 36 months.

when nex is out in july, there is a promotion to extend warranty to 24 months, but then they hv some technical issues, so many ppl cant get that.

after that period, its NORMAL period where register online get +3 (or 6) months only, tats 15 (or 18) months.

but then recently sony extend warranty to 24 months back again, so in this period u register u get 24 months smile.gif

i buy at july but i only register now, so my warranty is from oct 2010 to oct 2012 biggrin.gif

Basically yeah. you get iAuto and scene modes with nex. Just like pns. But you cant zoom as much as a pns. It depends on which lens you use.

cainconan, i have the same concern as you.
After study for quite some time and get review from some owners, i think NEX is good choice.
You can start with the pancake lens first.
the 18-55mm zoom lens sounds good but if you out of budget like me, you can always take 3-5 steps forward to get the similar Zoom distance! ^^

For me, get first the 16mm pancake for normal PNS, then in future invest on the 18-200mm for advance shooting.

I was just playing with the NEX3 + A-mount adaptor thingy + 50mm f2.8.... IT'S A PAIN in the butt to use.

Legacy lens with smooth smooth focus ring is different story I suppose.

In the matter of my uninformed opinion, I think the PnS gives more vivid brighter bling-er colors for out of camera jpegs.

theres no right or wrong word la. its base on everyones own interpretation...

but IMO, the NEX is more 'futuristic' rather than 'retro'...

LX3, PEN IMO looks more retro.

Actually I think the NEX looks ugly la. Usually Sony products look good but the NEX3 n 5 is a fail. If Panasonic wasn't so stubborn about hanging on to m4/3 n put in a nice APS-C into the GF1 then I wud surely have bought that instead of the NEX.

15 months doesn't sound right
i think you got it quite early and they messed up the categorization
instead of grouping it as SLR-range (extra 6 months warranty) they put it as cybershot range (3 months extra warranty)
better double check with them

u cuckoo la. The kinda wide ur talking about for buildings n mountains is 16mm Full Frame which is Ultra Wide oredi. 16mm FF wud be about 11mm on the NEX.  16mm on NEX is nowhere near UWA. 16mm on APS-C is just normal wide angle only.
*
exactly, 16mm on crop format is non UWA. Seriously i have trouble take street shots with the 16mm. I worry i might being hit by the traffic just to get the full scene in the frame.

QUOTE(Mikeshashimi @ Oct 12 2010, 11:31 AM)
lol... 1855 also can camwhore. sony chose 16mm coz its wide angle but not ultra wide angle.... its great for casual shooting (group shots, scenery, full body portrait etc.)...

I love the 16mm because its a fix and wide aperture.

QUOTE(Mikeshashimi @ Oct 12 2010, 12:07 PM)
for me 16mm would be perfect for beginners upgrading from traditional PnS. Its a very versatile lens.

maybe a while

do u guys use custom scene settings?
eg. add more sharpness and saturation

if i want sharpness +2 in iAuto mode
do i need to set sharpness +2 for all scene
because iAuto mode will pick the most suitable scene mode

The new firmware for the adapter was released together with nex's v.3 firmware. Af supported for SAM/SSM lenses via the adapter.

Better than none? I think it's a conjob to sell such an expensive adaptor and have AF speed slow enough for user to go out yumcha and come back before it locks on.

Better just to manual focus (like shinchan said) using nice lens + cheap conversion ring.

Ya having slow AF is still better than none. Maybe next firmware can fix the speed more?

lanusb: I think your friend has to bear in mind what he essentially gives up for a lighter package, which is:

1) No equivalent flash like those on dslr

2) No steady shot unless used with e mount oss lenses

No worries bro...

1. No Flash like SLR : Who needs when the Impressive ISO can handle it... dont even need a flash...

2. Yes no inside steady shots but you will get optical steady instead... works roughly the same... unless you use alpha mount lens... then yes no steady shots...

P/s : WOOHOO!!! Firmware V3 has released!!! now can support shortcut, Appreature for Video and!!!! Alpha lens can AUTO FOCUS!!!!!

ya. nex is a good choice to complement a dslr particularly when coupled with a wide angle lens with obvious reasons. u can do much more with a full dslr systems creatively by using the flash. not advisable to dump ur a550 by goin light unless u know what u will compromise by using juz a nex

NEX-5 v3 firmware download page from Sony Malaysia.

very simple updating procedure. as long as u can read and follow instruction, you'll be fine in about 10min. just read the instruction once over before starting.

I think you don't need that since it is for the adapter to use AF. But you can update for future when you got an adapter. biggrin.gif
