Sorry typo, i mean neck (the below part) not fretboard obviously how can play guitar if you cover fretboard with palm . tongue.gif

Added on October 23, 2010, 11:21 pmWhat i mean is when just started you find it hard to hold certain chords without hitting other unrelated strings right? So for most newbies their solution is to readjust wrist/arm angle bring it further front, sideways and whatnot. The key is actually only your fingers, have to really curl it and as long you keep habit to maintain same position the finger itselves will develop and reach the notes easily.
*
Yea that's how I feel but I try not to curl my wrist, just adjust my fingers

Hey guys I've got a question on chords, the D chord to be more specific:

You know that the usual way is 1st finger:3rd string,2nd fret
2nd finger:1st string,also on the 2nd fret
3rd finger:2nd string,3rd fret

Ok,so I have problem using this way,cos I can't seem to get it to sound right..so I switch the 1st and 2nd finger,so it would be:

1st finger:1st string,2nd fret
2nd finger:3rd string,2nd fret
3rd finger:2nd string,3rd fret

Is this ok?This is easier, but would it affect my playing in the future?

Thx

you can hold a chord whichever way you want and feel most comfortable just as long the 3 notes that makes up a chord rings out clear. for example, i could bar my 1st finger over the 3rd to 1st string on the 2nd fret and my middle finger frets the 2nd string on the 3rd fret. it still makes a D. our hands differ from one individual to another, hence, how we hold chords and how we place our fingers over the fretboard differs. there's no right or wrong, it's just how comfortable and how practical is it.

Trinity is as equally recognised worldwide as ABRSM. Yamaha grade system is also widely recognized, but yamaha is unique, its grade system go backwards, grade 10(fundamental) grade 9 to grade 7 (intermediate), grade 6 to grade 3 (advanced). Beside classic repertoires at higher grades, we learn music arrangement and improvisation.

It's compulsory to pass grade 5 theory exam to enter ABRSM grade 6 and above practical exam. Trinity and Yamaha do not require this.

ABRSM exam focus more on the technical skills, lots of scales scales scales and arpeggios. ABRSM and trinity do not have accompaniment test, but Yamaha have this, examiner plays the melody, you play chords and figure out the rhythm.
If you sit for ABRSM or Trinity guitar exam, the examiner may be not a guitarist, he/she may be a pianist or violinist or other instruments player. However, if you sit for Yamaha guitar exam, the examiner must be a guitarist.

The course content is very interesting. It seem like the thing I want to learn. Figuring out ryhythm by yourself.

1. Yes. That's what music is about -something that you want to listen to. Now, (psychologically) we all *hate* the way we play -why can't I play like such and such, why is that kid plays better etc. But we should listen to our playing to identify our weakness and correct our techniques:
One musician said that his practice always include playing and holding one note on his instrument for minutes (he plays alto sax) just to listen to his playing of that single note -he was going for the tone i.e finding his own voice. Try it on the instrument of your choice wink.gif
2. Not sure what your question is... Tab here means a simplified music sheet for guitarists, it usually shows where to play the notes, what chords to play etc.
3. Basics, what finalzz posted.
"too occupied by the fingerings"
Remember when we started playing we can't keep our eyes off the fret? Of course looking at our fingers do help improve our playing, but it also leads to improper playing posture and neglecting the picking hand/fingers, these two problems are what I see most in beginners.
"beginners should start somewhere by reading tabs"
That's it! When I's a beginner, I never *read* tabs, I just follow the numbers and this went for months or perhaps years -listen to a piece of song, google the tabs, spend hours of practice memorizing the numbers, by the end of the day I just play a bunch of numbers not the music.

p/s Of course this only applies to self-taught guitarists biggrin.gif.
People who attend classes don't know what they're missing;)
*
I agree the self taught loose out a lot.

QUOTE(finalzz @ Oct 22 2010, 10:08 PM)
well said. a musician in general should be playing music, not blatantly and blindly reading notes. but then again, classical instruments often read notes. now don't get me wrong, i love classical instruments and stuff, but what really matters is the idiosyncracies of the player, channeling the original emotion. IF the player manages to understand and channel the original writer's emotions but reading through tabs, then i personally think it's ok.... smile.gif

posture is VERY VERY important, didn't find out the importance of it until i started learning jazz guitar. slouching is not acceptable, and it's most recommended that players wear their guitar straps while they practise, so they'll get use to the motion of the guitar when standing up.

faceless, tabs as in the numbers which represents the fret and string, not what you think it is smile.gif
*
mgjg, finalzz,
I mistook tab for bar chord. I am already clear on the point 2.

yeah... if u like the song, you'd remember the chords. not necessary faster but you will put more effort into remembering the chord shape.

learn how to read tabs. dunno go google around how to read tabs. it's basically just fingering positions on what frets to press. do take note, though that sometimes the songs you want to play maybe of alternate tuning i.e. drop D. this means you will have to drop your fattest string, in a normal 6 string guitar means the 6th string down a step. if you're confused, google/youtube about drop D or DADGAD tunings. also, if you're playing acoustic, learn how to use a capo cause' some songs use capo i.e capo the 3rd fret and you will be able to play the song in standard G tuning without retuning the guitar.

the guitar is a very manual instrument. it's a transposable instrument unlike the piano where everything is laid out in front of you. wiki guitar to learn more of the instrument.

If you're self taught learning faster or slower is really meaningless. Playing the guitar is not a competition (at least to me), it should/could be one of those things that you can or want to do for the rest of your life smile.gif

GuitarPro is tablature editor and player. Their tablatures are in gp3/gp4/gp5 format -basically tabs that you can play and listen to. Really good, even for advanced guitarists. It's not free of course, the alternative is TuxGuitar which is open source and can read GuitarPro files (there're tons of them at UltimateGuitar).

always, train ur finger slowly, dont rush. play a same movement 1-2 day slowly, feel the note u are picking.
this will built ur finger memory, muscle and patient.

the most cliche word: practice. but true
also learn to read music notes NOT tabs will help
for theory learn from the piano. the mother instrument
learn from chords what 3 notes they contain. eg E has E, G#, B
learn scales (major, minor, harmonic, melodic) and picking patterns
finally for classical guitar. learn pima, or right hand plucking techniques

i am actually a CLASSICAL guitar teacher in kl (setiawangsa)

http://www.chrisliang.com

here is my blog. you can see me play! it's free and i have provided tabs, tips, midi. I generally do a blog post 2 every weeks.

here is my you tube channel

http://www.youtube.com/user/wooki97

please subscribe!

I have been playing guitar for 24 years. 10 years purely classical and i generally teach anyone who has an interest from the most basic to advance. from grade(1-4)
Graded music exam syllabuses : ABRSM

i also teach pop songs and rock but my forte is in CLASSICAL music. To me, if you can play classical, all other styles is easy. however the same can't be said if you know pop and what to play classical. it will be much harder to adapt. therefore classical is superior technically and theoretically. Playing classical guitar also gives you the ability to perform solo instead of relying on a band.

i teach music theory also (grade1-5) and i have a piano.

If you are interested in my service. you can reach me at

christian.liang@gmail.com

if dont mind the travel, come to my place for a private tuition in classical guitar. by car, use the duke highway. I have a spare guitar so no need to bring one for class.

if dont mind the travel, come to my place to do private tuition in classical guitar.

Attached Image

my rate is RM180 for 1 month (4 classes of 1 hour)

thank you

christian liang

IMO, that routine would never work for me. since i got my guitar, my practise routines consist of ridiculously fast passages for the starting year. and during that 3 hours of practise, i'd work on different exercises, most notably on john petrucci's picking exercises.

not only playing the same movement is boring to the ear (even paul gilbert would agree), it gets repetitive and also boring to the fingers. always try to spice up your practise routines, making it less dull and boring. if you do get bored however, STOP playing the guitar for 10~1hour, do something else and then come back and start practising all over again. practise IS NOT A CHORE, practise is suppose to be FUN and INTERESTING and ENJOYABLE.

If u wanna play for fun.. just play any song u want,
and stick with the basic of C, Am, F, G or G, Em, C, D.

But if u're serious.. try and learn step by step..
I owes use youtube as my bestfren in terms of learning..

Plus, try and play song according to difficulty level..

Get yourself a guiter pro, download any song file from ultimate-guitars,
and learn them..

as Yngwie said, "If u love music, play it." smile.gif IMHO le..
