Strengthen your fingers first.

This is true for all types of guitar playing : electric, acoustic, rhythm strumming and also for lead.

Finger exercises is the right way to start off building finger dexterity.

Practise finger exercises with proper timing and get a metronome to do this.

In the end not only will you strengthen your fingers, you'll learn timing as well.

If you have a limited time, breakup your training into 3 stages:-

1. finger exercises + timing (physical strength)

2. theory (academic)

3. transcribing songs off the record (listening)
